I hadn't read the first of this series, maybe that was a mistake? I found the main characters to be interchangeable, not exceptional, but maybe cosy murder stories are just not for me? The book did make good use of partial reveals, and the summation and tying up loose ends was accomplished well...not for me, but quite obviously for many others...many thanks to Netgalley.co.uk for the opportunity to read this ARC.
The Thursday Murder Club is once again back on a case. Well two cases, the brutal attack and mugging of Ibrahim and the case of the missing diamonds. Can Elizabeth and the gang figure out the two cases and make sure that all responsible are made to pay? Especially as the case involves an ex husband.
Oh I was so looking forward to this and it did not disappoint. I love this series so much. The cases are always fascinating with some brilliant twists. The plot is a steady slow burn to a brilliant ending. Some of the story I figured out but one or two details took me by surprise which is always brilliant. The ending is well done and as expected for the Thursday Murder Club. You can never tell just what they are going to do or how they get away with things. I love all the characters but especially Stephen. There's something about him I just love and Bogdan too, I hope he and Donna can find each other. Another brilliant mystery and I'm looking forward to the third.
Really loved the book and plot, just liked the last book it has enjoyable characters and nice flow. The character development and details is 2nd to none. Well done
Another great mystery for the Thursday Murder Club. I enjoyed this story as much as the first, if not a bit more as I knew the characters. They felt nice and familiar to me. The story was enjoyable with a mystery as to whodunnit.
It has been almost a year to the day since I wrote my review for The Thursday Murder Club and I had a quick scan of the review I wrote back then. The only real part of the review I had remembered was the end. “I’m not sure that I will be rushing out to buy the (already announced) sequels.” This was very true at the time. When the opportunity came up to review book two I was a little hesitant but I decided I would give Mr. Osman another go – after all, I did really enjoy the characters in book 1 – I just thought the story was a bit all over the place.
How glad am I that I gave this series another shot? Very.
Everything I enjoyed about the first book was still there, but in addition to that I thought the plot was brilliant this time around. I was glued to the page and kept guessing where it was all going to link up – and of course WHO was the cause of all this funny business.
Joyce is once again here with her diary pages, and she is once again my favourite character in the book. The joy she takes from just being part of the goings on is brilliant, and nothing seems to phase her in the slightest. I hope in the next book we get to see even more of her cheekiness.
For me, this time we have a much more polished book. I know I was in the minority before in not absolutely loving the first one (I have repeatedly been told that the audio version is fantastic) but this time I am well on board the “Osman as author” train. Is it perfect? No, but it is a damn fine read. One which I have no problem recommending to those who like a bit of a humour filled murder mystery.
Amazing. Often the second book in a series can be a bit of a let down when the first one has been so good but, this is definitely not the case with The man who died twice. There are lots of twist and turns, quite a few surprises and a nice gentle humour. I love the way that Richard explains the every day in such a wonderful way that it makes you smile and think. Knowing the Characters from the first book is an advantage (mainly because you understand their personalities and how the group fits together) but, not needed as the story is very much a stand alone read. Joyce still remains my favourite character but, I am equally charmed with Bogdan. The book made me laugh and cry and the ending was quite brilliant. Can not wait for the next instalment of these intriguing pensioners.
Thankyou to netgalley and the publisher for allowing me an early copy of this book. The Thursday Murder Club i finished within a few days and it was the same with this release. Great characters, great writing and a great plot, Highly recommended,
I enjoyed this book and definitely thought it was better than the first one. The writing style has improved and the storyline more gripping. As before, the book follows 4 pensioners who form the Thursday murder club. This story involves a number of deaths, the mafia and mi5 and the 4 friends who help to solve the mysteries. Would definitely recommend. Thanks to netgally for the early copy to review.
This is a really clever book but the style is conversational and you just keep reading and absorbing without realising how much you are being reeled in! Osman also makes the book funny as the septuagenarians find body after body appears and they need to Elizabeth safe. It is witty and fast paced whilst always keeping you absolutely hooked as our four oldies are such stars dashing about solving crime and protecting friends!
Another excellent book from Mr Osman set around the Murder Club in the old folks home. It’s full of really funny one-liners and just so easy to read. The characters are loveable and funny and they’re not to be messed with. Thoroughly enjoyed it and loved the ending. So hope we’re going to see more from the super sleuths Joyce & Elizabeth, along with their back up ‘heavy’ Bogdan. Great book. Treat yourself to a fabulous read.
Once again I marvel at the context of this story, the wonderful retirement complex. Whilst I enjoyed it I felt the first book fell a bit short in the plot. I think this book does better. For me it is not so much solving the mystery it is the characters and context. Osman is gradually developing the characters in his stories, in particular Joyce. It is their inter relationships both between themselves and the police that makes the book a joy to read.
Another warm and humous story from this series, it was so nice to be back with the gang.
Having said that I felt this one was far more based around Joyce than the gang as a whole. Don't get me wrong, I love Joyce, a fab character, I just felt I missed the others some what in this one.
The story and crime seemed a bit more serious in this one and possible a tiny bit less humour in it by being so.
However, I did enjoy it and look forward to reading more.
Having enjoyed the first book, I was delighted to get the opportunity to read the second book early. IMO it was even better than the first one.
The plotline draws you in as the Thursday Club members and their friends and families are beautifully crafted and you just can't help liking them as if they were real people you could meet on the street.
The baddies are clearly bad people who deserve everything Elizabeth decides they should get.
Some excellent twists and good humour throughout. Loved it.
Another satisfying mystery which improves on the first installment in the series. 4/5 stars.
And … they’re back! Last year, I (along with most of the country!) read and enjoyed The Thursday Murder Club: Richard Osman’s first story about a group of sleuthing OAPs and the members of the local police unwittingly roped into their investigations. I liked the older protagonists, particularly Elizabeth, and am delighted they’re all back in this second installment in which Elizabeth gets even more to do and we find out about her past.
I think The Man Who Died Twice is an improvement on the first book in the series. Mostly because I found some elements of the mystery plot in The Thursday Murder Club impenetrable and confusing. This one, while full of twists and turns, is more straightforward. Also, as I’m now familiar with the main cast of characters, I could devote more attention to the whodunnit elements, making it all easier to follow and greater fun.
I guess you could read this book without having read The Thursday Murder Club, but I would always recommend reading a series of books in order so you can get the most out of continuing plot strands and character arcs.
Overall: even better than the first book in the series, The Man Who Died Twice is surely guaranteed to top the bestseller lists for a long time. I just hope the television adaptation is as much fun.
Thanks to NetGalley and Penguin General UK for offering this ARC in exchange my honest review.
This novel is the second book in the Thursday Murder Club series by author Richard Osman. Return to the retirement home and join the 4 main characters in the Thursday Murder club. I really enjoyed this book more than the first one and it's well-written which engaged me and kept me turning page to page. I did love this writing style and the plot. Those residents were so intriguing and formed a wonderful gang to give a good plot of this novel. However, I disappointed at the ending in which gave me rush and average. It's also fast paced and the story is very well done to make me laugh. If you're looking for a fun story with a bit mystery, it's your choice. I think you will enjoy this novel.
Another great adventure with the Thursday Murder Club, and equally as entertaining as the first . Brilliant plot, excellent characters, and extremely well written and addictive! Highly recommended.
I really liked The Thursday Murder Club. I loved the characters but was left a little cold by the actual plot. But I LOVE The Man Who Died Twice. Funny, clever, touching, gripping.....there aren't enough words for me to declare how much I loved this. I went from one sentence moving me to tears to laughing out loud in the turn of a page. I never pre order books, certainly not a year in advance but part three is already in my basket!
I cannot tell you how estatic I was to recieve an advance e-copy of this and to be back in Coopers Chase for another adventure with Joyce, Elizabeth, Ibrahim, Ron and the gang! I adored the first Thursday Murder Club book and Richard Osman’s second installment did not disappoint…in fact, I might have even enjoyed it more than the first?
It was really lovely to see all the characters from the first book brought back for a new Thursday Murder Club mystery (Bogdan especially is a favourite of mine). Just like the first installment, this book managed to make me laugh out loud probably once a chapter and the ending even made me tear up a little! It’s just a perfect cosy autumn read for lovers of Agatha Christie style crime and mysteries. I thought the James Bond thriller twist to this one was really cool, especially to get more of an insight into what Elizabeth’s life was like before Coopers Chase. I’d love to more of the other characters lives explored more in the next book, maybe Ron or Ibrahim next? Definitely one of this year’s five star reads for me and I’ll be counting down to book 3!
Whilst I really enjoyed the first book, this one is so much better! It is morr complex, confident and entertaining than the first and the characters feel more 'livered' than formulaic in the sequel. Hard top talk about it in much detail without spoilers, but we do find out quite a bit more about a main female character's history, and this allows lots of plot twists along ther way. I'm loooking forward to number 3!
OK firstly, let me say I know I should have read The Thursday Murder Club before requesting this book from Netgalley but honestly I requested this on a whim because I'd heard Thursday murder club was brilliant so I was interested to read something by Richard Osman. I will go back and read Thursday Murder Club.
The thing with celebrity authors is that the book will either be absolutely awful or absolutely brilliant. I wasn't quite prepared for how brilliant this book would be! It's unlike anything I've ever read before.
I adored Elizabeth and Joyce in particular. They have a brilliant dynamic in their friendship.
My only disappointment is that I read it so quick and now have to wait for the next book. Given the pandemic we are currently going through, this book is the perfect distraction from life. It makes you think but keeps you guessing at the same time.
Its hard to explain just how much I loved this so I'll conclude by saying this. It's in my top 3 reads of 2021
