Elizabeth, Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron are back, with a second outing for the Thursday Murder Club, and what a great read again, with another intriguing mystery for the gang to solve, and plenty of twists and turns.
What I particularly liked about this second book is the character development that Richard Osman has grown - we get to learn a whole lot more about Elizabeth in particular, and this added more depth to the story.
I was absolutely delighted to get a copy of this book from NetGalley and it really didn’t disappoint.
The characters from The Thursday Murder Club return and are further fleshed out, making me love them even more. There are some lovely funny moments which genuinely made me laugh out loud. In addition to the previous characters we meet some new villains, as ever they’re extremely successful but completely haphazard. We also find out much more about Elizabeth and the fascinating background hinted at in the previous book.
This book was a wonderful comforting read, leaving a happy feeling and a desperation to read the next one before this one is even published.
I enjoyed the first Thursday Murder Club book so much that I didn’t think it could be bettered, but I was wrong. This follow up is absolutely superb and even funnier than the first and had me actually laughing out loud on numerous occasions. Richard Osman is an extremely clever writer and once more sends us off on an incredible journey with the foursome of OAP murder investigators led by the wonderful Elizabeth. Along with Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron she leads the gang along a winding road that sees graphic murders, stolen diamonds and altercations with the mafia to name just a few. All dealt with as if just everyday occurrences so wonderfully written that we believe it too.
The characters just get better and better and Joyce’s journal entries remain to be an absolute hilarious and clever inclusion in the book which are a pleasure to read. But the underlying strength is the camaraderie between the main four characters as well as Bogdan and the two trusty local police officers Donna and Chris. The trust they have for each other is immense and produces lots of banter between them that the author somehow manages to convey sometimes with just a simple described look, word or phrase but we interpret as a huge paragraph in our mind.
Faster paced, I thoroughly enjoyed this follow up even more than the first book and if you are a fan of The Thursday Murder Club then you will love this too. Highly recommended.
Many thanks to NetGalley for an ARC in return for an honest review.
I loved this book. So funny with many laugh out loud moments and a great story to boot. I loved the wonderful characters from the first book and also the new baddies in this one. I listened to The Thursday Murder Club on audiobook but much preferred actually reading this one. Richard Osman is a very talented writer. With thanks to NetGalley, the publishers and the author for the e-ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you for the opportunity to review this new novel.
I'm so thankful that I got to spend a couple of hours with Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron and Ibrahaim again! I just love them all and the characters that surrounds them.
The characters are witty, smart and human :) I can't wait for the third book...
So nice to have the old gang back again! The story jumps straight into the main plot which was nice but I do think I preferred the first book if I'm honest!
I am looking forward to the third book though!
The most frequently-asked question I've received about 'The Man Who Died Twice' has been whether or not it's about Elizabeth and her gang of senior citizens. Yes it is! Our favourite cardigan-wearing crime-fighters are back, straight after their success in solving the murder case, and ready to battle with drug dealers, spies and the mafia! Fans of espionage will be delighted to find out more about Elizabeth's career and personal life in this second visit to Coopers Chase, and the novel is as much of a rollercoaster ride as the first.
Although Elizabeth and her past are central to much of this plot, I loved Ron's role in 'The Man Who Died Twice', and Joyce and Ibrahim are also given their turn in the limelight. There's something really funny about a murder investigation being interrupted by a boiled sweet or someone needing the toilet, and I really admire Osman for once again succeeding in presenting plot with all the twists and turns of an Agatha Christie novel, but somehow also finding space for lots of moments of joy and hilarity (mainly through Joyce's take on events in her diary).
Overall, I found 'The Man Who Died Twice' to be an absolute joy to read. I can't wait for the third instalment to find out what these senior sleuths get up to next! I don't always rate the novels I review, but this is getting a full five stars.
Quirky and charming but perhaps just a little bit over-cute for those of us who have a strong twee radar... This has something of the eccentricity of the Slow Horses series by Mick Herron except that it's nice! I don't mean that it's cosy, exactly, as certainly there are some tough things that happen. For me, I love smart Elizabeth and Ron (who doesn't see why he needs to change his underpants every day!), but Joyce's meanderings and Ibrahim's fears are less attractive. There are places where the writing gets that little bit laboured in its comedy - but a feel-good switch-off read with a genuinely plot.
Well written, charming and witty - do not septuagenarians out - they can outwit and outsmart the best of us. The series just gets better and better - I particularly love how the friendship between four unlikely kindred spirits and their friends come to life.
"You are simply a little lost, Donna. And if one is never lost in life, then clearly one has never travelled anywhere interesting." Ibrahim is fast becoming my favorite. His is a gentle soul - painful self-aware of how his fears are eating him up inside. Thank goodness for friends who will do whatever it takes to pull him out of his rut.
Highly recommended.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. This is definitely better than the first Thursday Murder Club novel and feels like the author is really getting into his writing. The combination of dry humour and a murder mystery work phenomenally well. The wry witty comments and observations kept me chuckling and sometimes agreeing all the way through. The plot is well woven and the reader has a genuine chance to solve the puzzles it contains. The main characters who first appeared in the previous novel really start to grow on you and you cannot help but emphasise with their all too familiar problems. This is perfect summer holiday reading but would be equally enjoyable on a chilly winter evening. I understand that a third book is in the offing and available to pre-order - can't wait!
The Man Who Died Twice takes off exactly where The Thursday Murder Club left us, and gives us an even more intriguing mystery to solve. We unravel more of Elizabeth's work history and her personal life, as her ex-husband asks for her help with protection from some bad guys looking for 20 million pounds worth of diamonds.
The cast of main characters is the same as in book one, but I think Joyce's voice shines through even stronger in book two. She really is an adorable woman with a lot of depth. Her interactions with just about everyone are peppered with humour and realism.
This is a hard book to review without giving any spoilers, so I'll try to keep it concise. If you loved the meandering mystery of book one, enjoyed the world view of a group of old age penshioners solving crime, then you'll definitely enjoy book two, as in my opinion, it took everything from book one and has made it slightly better, and still kept me guessing until the end!
Five stars. Please tell me book three is already in the works.
I really enjoyed engaging with The Thursday Murder Club again. They are both fun & eccentric in equal measure. The storyline us intriguing and can at times be confusing, but I loved it, very entertaining. Richard Osman is proving to be a very good writer. I look forward to book 3.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and Richard Osman for the chance to read this book.
I had read the first book in the series and thoroughly enjoyed it - so was looking forward to book 2 and didn't expect to get an advance copy at all - so I am very grateful.
I found in the first book once you got to understand the characters and where they fitted in, then the book was easy to follow and was a good funny yarn - and book 2 followed on in that vein.
We met again the characters from The Thursday Murder Club and learnt more about the past life of one which was central to the plot in this book. In parts I found this part hardly credible at times but it fitted in with the plot and I suppose was acceptable.
This is a very hard review to write without giving away plotlines, spoilers and all sorts along the way so I think it best to close by saying - this was a fantastic read and I cannot wait for the Third Instalment !!
Thanks again for all involved in me being able to read this book
Another fabulous book from Richard Osman following the Thursday Murder Club gang. There are still the same funny characters but also some new dubious ones including Elizabeth’s ex husband Douglas. Who commits the murders and why is a puzzle for the gang and one you have to wait until the end to discover. Well written and interesting plot with plenty of humour. Thanks Richard his publisher and NetGalley
A pure escapist crime novel. Easy to read, great touches of humour and a cast of 'detectives', all in the latter years of their lives and all very set in their ways. Better than the first book the plot of which was very complicated. This plot is much simpler and all the better for it.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishes for the advance copy.
This is book 2 in The Thursday Murder Club series and so much better than the first book.
I thought twice about requesting a copy of it to review as the first book in the series was ok but I was interested in seeing how the author had taken the characters we met in the first book.
We're back in Coopers Chase and the gang are all here. Elizabeth, Joyce, Ibrahim, Ron, Bogdan and Fairhaven police officers, Chris and Donna.
This is a much fasted paced book than the first in the series. This one has more danger, more bodies and more fun. We already know the main characters and the action starts quickly because of this.
Elizabeth receives a letter from someone that she knows to have been dead for a very long time who says that they are now a resident of Coopers Chase and invites Elizabeth to their flat.
Before long, Elizabeth and the gang are knee deep in a case that involves drugs, ex-husbands, diamonds worth £20m that have been stolen from someone desperate to get them back.
I look forward to reading the next in the series
Unlike the rest of the world, it seems, I did not enjoy the first book in this series “The Thursday Murder Club”. I found it too confusing, a bit slow and I just couldn’t get my head round why people were raving about it, but I was clearly in the minority here. So, I wasn’t overly keen to read the sequel, but I was very kindly gifted an advanced copy do I thought I would give it a go, and I’m glad I did. It’s 100% better, in my opinion.
I found the main characters were far more rounded in this book. I found the first book had too many characters and too many subplots to keep track of. This book seems more thought out and more pleasant to read. The characters are more human and I felt they all played their own part in this sequel. There is really only one or two main storylines this time which made it easier to read, and it allowed Osman to get really stuck in and flesh them out which I thoroughly enjoyed.
There’s the right amount of intrigue and red herrings to keep you interested, but also you can keep on top of them without requiring a pad to make notes on. There are twists snd turns like any good murder mystery, and even as I got to the crux of the story, I still wasn’t confident in my ability to prove who did it.
Like I said, initially I had no desire to read this sequel, but now I’m finished, I cannot wait for the third instalment!
I will post this review on GoodReads, Amazon, Waterstones and my personal blog.
Another great murder mystery being investigated by The Thursday Murder Club!
I love the characters, the humour and the twisty storyline of this novel and hopefully look forward to reading more in the future!
Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this before it hits the shelves.
Richard Osman does it again but this time it is even better ! No need for me to repeat the synopsis over as others have already done that. Suffice to say that ............on a horrible cold and wet autumn or winter's day when you have to stay in this book is a perfect accompaniment with a cup of tea, cocoa or something stronger. A gentle meander though the England's green and pleasant land with folks not giving in to the age it says on their nightwear !!
Enjoy it !
Witty OAP crime caper ★★★☆☆
The fab four are back and ready to solve their next crime. This case involves diamonds, the mafia, the FBI, and Elizabeth's ex husband. With help from their police pals Donna and Chris and thug and close friend Bogdan, can they outwit everybody and solve the case before the body count gets too high?
For those that enjoyed the characters in the first book of the series this is another delightful caper full of Joyce's witty and unexpected narrative and more of Elizabeth's machinations and mystery.
As with the first book, solving the crime fully ourselves is almost impossible especially with all the competing parties and threads; Elizabeth is much smarter than most of us. However the plot keeps us guessing and there are plenty of red herrings and culprits to keep us entertained.
A robust second installment of the Thursday Murder Club and it's quirky funny characters which fans will continue enjoy.
