I highly recommend this book, fab characters, and plot.
Thank you NetGalley for my complimentary copy in return for my honest review.
Brilliant! I throughly enjoyed it from start to finish! This is the second book in The Thursday Murder Club series and every bit as good as the first. The four beloved characters are back and it is the following Thursday. What follows is a rollercoaster of events that will keep you turning the pages, it is full of suspense, humour and cups of tea. Delightfully British and full
of warmth which is not usually something you can say about a crime novel.
I may be the exception to the rule here, but I DNF'd this. The start was incredibly slow to action and I felt even after five chapters there was nothing that had caught my grasp.
I just adore the tongue in cheek humour of this novel... And Joyce - what a delicious character! I bet everyone knows a Joyce, whose mind goes off at tangents, blabbering on and suddenly saying something really crucial to the investigation.
The New York mafia, money laundering, drug smuggling, love, mystery and, of course, murder: there's something for everyone, and readers are led down the wrong path again and again, until it all fits neatly into place at the end.
"The Man who Died Twice" is an extremely satisfying read and I thoroughly recommend it to everyone, although it would be best reading "The Thursday Murder Club" first.
A special mention to Lesley Manville who, quite apart from being a wonderful actress, is an incredibly gifted narrator, despite it being her first time reading for audiobooks.
I'm really sorry I just couldn't get into this. Too many subplots and it didn't engage me. Thank you to netgalley for the ARC
I loved this book.
A page turner, Miss Marple, who dunnit type read with the best elderly detectives.
Witty and suspenseful until the end.
I am going to seek out the other titles in the series.
We return to the peaceful and upmarket Coopers Chase Retirement Village, where four unlikely friends called The Thursday Murder club meet weekly in the Jigsaw Room to discuss unsolved crimes, on the following Thursday to their first, real murder investigation success. When Elizabeth, the capable and networking extraordinaire of the group, receives a letter from an old spy colleague, a man with whom she has a long history.
He’s made a BIG mistake and he desperately wants her help in a dangerous situation involving stolen diamonds, a violent mobster, and a very real threat to his life. As bodies start piling up, Elizabeth enlists the help of the rest of the club: the kind retired nurse Joyce; the analytical retired psychiatrist, Ibrahim; and the fiery former union leader, Ron, in the hunt for a ruthless murderer. And if they find the diamonds too? Well, wouldn’t that be a bonus?
This time they are up against an enemy who wouldn’t bat an eyelid at knocking off four septuagenarians, but us readers know that the killer should underestimate this greying group at their own as peril, because they still have a few tricks up their knitted sleeves, and what they lack in youth, teeth and mobility, they make up for with experience, cunning and copious amounts of tea and cake!
What follows is another rollicking good murder mystery with bucket loads of clues, red herrings, suspects, long-lost mysteries and plenty of laughs, too! And perhaps even more twists and turns than the first book! They are soon playing their old tricks and running rings around suspects and MI5 alike, with their innocent, doddering act; plus they have the support of their friends DCI Chris Hudson and PC Donna de Freitas. But can the TMC find the killer (and the diamonds) before the killer finds them?
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Man Who Died Twice, which I thought I was another wonderfully eccentric and quintessentially British murder mystery, which I loved just as much, if not a little more than the first!
I absolutely loved this book. It was great to catch up with the familiar characters whilst also getting to know them a little bit more. The mystery kept me guessing but it was the characters that kept me hooked. There are plenty of laugh out loud moments throughout. All in all the perfect mix for a comforting read that you can’t put down. I am already looking forward to book 3.
After reading the Thursday Murder Club, I was really looking forward to another great novel and this didn’t disappoint! Highly recommended!
I absolutely loved TMWDT. Just as much as the first. The characters are fab, it's always a fun plot to follow and has real LOL moments. I cannot wait for book 3!
Thanks to NetGalley, Penguin and Richard Osman for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
Really enjoyed this book, didn’t love it as much as the first one and it felt a little bit more ridiculous than the first but I still recommended it to people and will still pick up more books by Osman
It was nice to catch up with the characters of the Thursday murder club again. I enjoyed this read which was slightly chaotic and comedic at parts.
My thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book in return for an honest review.
After reading Richard Osman's debut novel Thursday Murder Club earlier this year, I didn't think anything could top it. I was excited to read the sequel but also a little apprehensive, worried that the charm of Cooper's Chase might wear off, or that the plot couldn't possibly be as good. I was, thankfully, very wrong!
The Man Who Died Twice was even better than the first book. I loved returning to Cooper's Chase with Osman's plethora of charming, hilarious and well developed characters. Parts of this book made me want to laugh and cry in equal measure, a true sign of a great author. The plot was unpredictable again and perhaps even more well thought out than the first. I truly hope this is not the last in the series - I have grown quite attached to the gang, and can see more room for friendships and budding romance. Plus plenty more murders to solve, of course!
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for a copy of this book - I am just sorry I didn't read it sooner!
Richard Osman is back! The sleuthing seniors return! And they are better than ever! I absolutely loved The Man Who Died Twice. It is funnier, wittier, and dare I say, smarter, than its predecessor. It really shows Osmond’s growth as a writer, which he himself asserts in the acknowledgements, and I wholeheartedly agree. I couldn’t put this book down – it captures a perfect blend of a gripping mystery whilst keeping a level of heart that makes the story cosy. In this adventure, Elizabeth’s past comes back to haunt her and takes our sleuthing seniors on a new case to solve…There’s drug busts, there’s murder galore, there’s conspiracy theories, there’s millions of £££ on the line… All of it felt very slick from start to finish.
What makes these books so special is the balance Osman strikes. It brings an awareness of real issues and concerns that our older generations experience and it always makes me feel emotional and full of gratitude Osman is giving this age group a place in popular and present fiction. It demonstrates that getting older doesn’t mean you’re worth less or less capable of being the smartest person in the room or less capable of being the most caring person in the room.
Elizabeth is her bossy self, Abraham is his wise self, Ron is his usual brass but hilarious self and Joyce is the ever helpful and kind friend we love and know. And the side characters - Donna, Chris and Bogdan - were just as good to read.
I cannot wait to see where Osman takes this group of characters next. I am bursting out of my seat impatient for the next instalment! The Man Who Died Twice is nothing less than a perfect sequel offering an exciting and engaging mystery, whilst tugging the heartstrings and, like The Thursday Murder Club, left me feeling happy. I also didn’t predict the twists!
Thank you kindly to the publishers for providing me with an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you NetGalley and Penguin publishing for my e-arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Having not LOVED the first book, I struggled to find the motivation to pick up this book until now. It starts off quite slowly, and it took me a while to remember who was who (you definitely have to have read the first book to read this one). Once you get to about half way, the story really does pick up and I did become quite invested in the story. I love that Joyce's Instagram account is real, and do love the characters despite them being overly annoying at times. There were a lot of parts that were unnecessary, and some overly confusing, but overall I did enjoy this book. I did end up buying the hardback of this one as i just love how it fits with book 1. Will I buy book 3? If it matches the other two, probably! Although I will be sure to refresh myself on who is who first..
The Thursday Murder Club (TMC) strikes again, but this time with more action, more cunning, and as the name suggests, more murders.
Elizabeth, Joy, Ibrahim, and Roy find themselves involved in a very secret mission at the hands of a man Elizabeth used to know rather well. Hiding out at the retirement home for his own protection, Douglas is fleeing a violent criminal and for good reason - he may have pocketed 20 million pounds worth of diamonds while doing a quick scout inside a criminal's property for MI5. With the New York mafia, local drug dealers, and the irate diamond-less criminal on their tails, the Thursday Murder Club must act quickly if they are to save Douglas, catch the drug dealers in action, and even better, find the diamonds before its too late.
I worried that The Man Who Died Twice wouldn't live up to its predecessor but I'm thrilled to say it absolutely did. The book is filled with action, humour, mystery, and red herrings, ticking all the boxes for a book in this genre. The four members of the TMC are unique in their own way, with each possessing different traits that ultimately make them such a great team - Elizabeth is the fierce, no-nonsense ex-copper who knows a thing or two about getting what she wants; Joyce is sweet, funny, and naive, making her the perfect unassuming accomplice; Ibrahim is cool, calm, and collected; Roy is confident and bold, making him the perfect impersonator when the gang need some information.
I loved the way the primary and secondary storylines wove together in this one. It was well crafted and kept me guessing right until the end. Speaking of endings, I couldn't help but let out a satisfied 'aw' - it was one of the best endings that genuinely filled my heart with happiness.
I can't wait for the next instalment of the TMC!
What a fab book! I had really enjoyed The Thursday Murder Club so was looking forward to this next instalment. And it did not disappoint! I love the way that Richard Osman writes - I think that seeing and hearing his sense of humour on TV, I can almost hear his voice narrating the story as I am reading it!
Another murder situation for Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron and Ibrahim to work their way through, together with some other crimes on the side. Although there is a lot going on and I did have to concentrate on who was who at times, I couldn't stop reading to find out what was going to happen and how they were going to solve everything. There truly were some laugh out loud moments - my husband wondered what was going on! - but also some sensitive times, especially concerning Ibrahim.
A great book, which will not disappoint. I would encourage you to read it as soon as possible!
Thank you to Net Galley and the publishers for allowing me to read this in exchange for an honest review, which is what I have given.
I couldn't wait to read this after finishing the Thursday murder club last year. This took a different twist than the first book. There were multiple sub plots, a mugging, a diamond heist and a range of other plots. I found the short chapters brilliant and I enjoyed all of the different plots and how they eventually came together. At parts this book was actually very funny and I laughed out load. Definitely looking forward to Richard Osman's next works.
I wasn’t sure what to expect from the second instalment in this series as although I did find The Thursday Murder Club fairly enjoyable, it didn’t completely grip me. I probably preferred this story but only marginally.
I was drawn into The Man Who Died Twice more quickly and it was fun for the original characters to be reintroduced, the plot was steady but predictable. It just felt that there was something lacking which I can’t quite put my finger on because this book does have all the components to make a good read - unfortunately I don’t think this series is for me, although I can appreciate why the books are popular.
Big thanks to Penguin General UK and Netgalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
