Disclaimer: I received an audio ARC of this book. I chose to review it and this in no way impacts my opinion of it.
When I had the chance to listen and review the audiobook of Cursed Luck, I was ecstatic. It is no secret that I am a massive Kelley Armstrong fan so as soon as I finished my current audiobook, I dove in. As usual, I was not disappointed.
This novel has everything you could ask for. Magic, Curses, Kidnappings, Rescues, Romance... This book was interesting from beginning until the very last line. I could not stop listening and was looking for excuses to listen more. I'd never read a novel about curse weavers and luck workers so I found this to be an incredibly original read and so much fun.
Not only was the novel incredible, but I absolutely loved the narrator. Carly Robins did an absolutely amazing job and now I want to listen to more audiobooks she narrates.
This story began as an e-serial that Kelley Armstrong posted on her website during the first pandemic lockdown. I avoided the novel at that time because she stated it would be published so this was a first time listen/read for me.
I cannot wait for the next book in this series!
Kennedy Bennett and her two sisters come from a long line of curse weavers and Kennedy’s specialty is uncursing valuable objects and then reselling them. When she’s approached by Aiden Conolly, a luck worker, to uncurse the infamous Necklace of Harmonia, they butt heads, and she refuses to work for him. However, when Kennedy’s sisters are kidnapped and the evidence points to it being related to Aiden’s request, she hunts him down and they team up to find her sisters. Kennedy and Aiden quickly get over their differences and form a complimentary team and there are hints of an attraction growing between them.
This was a fun magical story! I’ve seen a few reviews calling it a cozy Urban Fantasy, and I totally agree with that description. It reminded me of the The Guild Codex series by Annette Marie in that it’s a lighthearted adventure/mystery with a lot of silly humor. Urban Fantasy-Lite in a way. I thought the magical world Ms. Armstrong presented was an original and interesting concept: humans with a variety of magical talents based on Greek Mythology. I will say that I did get a little lost on some of the roots because there are so many variations of names in the Greek Mythos, but I just went with it, and it didn’t hamper my enjoyment of the story.
The mystery wraps up, but the relationship between Kennedy and Aiden is just starting with a possible romance to come. Kennedy is left with a “souvenir” from this caper, and I wonder how it will impact the story going forward. I look forward to the next story!
Carly Robins narrated the story, and I thought her voice represented Kennedy perfectly. Fun and sarcastic, she had great comedic timing! I’d like to continue the series by audio with her as the performer. I listened at 1.4x normal speed.
This audiobook was awesome! I really enjoyed Armstrong's writing and the story she told. I have always been a fantasy fan and this definitely met that need! A friend recommended her writing to me during my book club and she will be excited to hear that this is an amazing upcoming release by Kelley Armstrong!
Whenever I see that Kelley Armstrong has a new book out I get super excited. And even more when it’s a paranormal book of any kind. I fell in love with Kelley’s adult urban fantasies and I will always read a new one from her.
CURSED LUCK was released as a serial I believe last year and I was holding out until the actual ebook or audio would come out (both out now). Now is the time. This is the first in what seems will be an urban fantasy series and something a bit different than what I’ve come to expect from her. I guess it felt like a mix between the Women of the Otherworld and Cainsville series. There’s a small town vibe to this supernatural story that I usually quite like in my UF, but it was perfectly balanced with other elements that hint at a more intense UF (kidnappings, art heists, thieves, and Greek Gods!)
Kennedy is our main protagonist and she’s a curse weaver, coming from a long family line of them. Aiden, whom I’ll call the hero, comes from a wealthy family of luck workers. He’s got his sights on obtaining the Necklace of Harmonia, one of the most cursed objects and will need Kennedy’s help to break the objects’ curse. But things are never simple. He’s not the only one after the object and there’s more to the necklace than a simple curse.
The concept of this book was excellent and I also really loved how the luck workers actually work. I don’t think I’ve seen anything quite like it before and it was very interesting. The plot has a steady pace although it was never a fast one, which again gives me the small town vibes. Even at times when things are dire and dicey it felt laid back.
Both main characters have growth ahead of them. I certainly connected with Kennedy a bit more but I loved seeing her relationship with Aiden have an impact on his personality. The romance element was small for me on this one even though it looms in the background. I don’t think enough was done to sell that part of the story to me but I’m certainly hopeful to see where they go from here.
And one of my favorite elements of this story was how mythology was included seamlessly into the plot in such a cool and interesting way.
If you liked Devon Monk’s Ordinary Magic series, I think you’ll enjoy this one. It’s a series that certainly has a lot of potential and I’m extremely curious to find out more about it.
I have read a lot of Kelley Armstrong's books so when I saw there was a new series I just had to get my hands on the first book.
I did very much enjoy this one. I was hooked from the very beginning.
I do recommend it.
Kennedy is a curse weaver; she can undo curses. Her sisters also have this ability. When her sisters are kidnapped, she teams up with a man with luck (leprechaun?) to try and find them. In order to do so, she must find a cursed necklace.
Opinion
I listened to the audiobook. The narrators were perfect for the part. They showed emotions as needed for the parts without being overly dramatic.
The story was intriguing. As new details were released, I was drawn more into the plot. Ms. Armstrong was able to weave in details from familiar tales that will surprise and please you.
Many thanks to Net Galley for providing me with an ARC of this audiobook.
Kennedy Bennett comes from a long line of curse weavers. For centuries, her family has plied their trade in Unstable, Massachusetts, an unconventional small town that's welcomed paranormal practitioners since the dawn of spiritualism. Kennedy has recently struck out on her own, opening an antiques shop in Boston, where her specialty is uncursing and reselling hexed objects.
This is the first book in a new series by the author Kelley Armstrong.
Kennedy Bennet is a curse weaver. She has an antique shop in Boston which she uses for selling on the objects that she has removed curses from.
Aiden Connolly Barrels into Kennedy's shop telling her that he has a job for her.
The meeting at Aiden's office does not go well and Kennedy storms off. However, whilst at the office, Kennedy discovered that one of the items in his office was cursed. She decides to return to the office that night to un-curse the item, in the hope that she never has to see Aiden again.
Of course Aiden finds Kennedy in his office and this is where Kennedy realises that this was all a test for Aiden to find out if Kennedy is a real curse weaver.
The scion of a wealthy family of luck workers, Aiden has a scheme to get his hands on the most famous cursed object of all: the mythical Necklace of Harmonia. He's not the only one after the necklace, though. And he's not the only one looking for a curse weaver to fix it.
Aiden wants Kennedy's help in unweaving a curse on a famous necklace. Kennedy has no choice but to agree as she soon discovers that her two sisters have been kidnapped.
The relationship between Kennedy and Aiden soon grows as they learn to trust and rely on each other.
This was an audiobook which was narrated by Carly Robins.
I enjoyed the inflections that she used and the emotion that came through from her. There were a lot of characters, male, female and a few with accents which she managed very well. At no point was I confused as to whom I was listening to speak.
Kelley Armstrong starts off a new trilogy with Cursed Luck, which has aspects of magic/paranormal as well as mystery/thriller going for it. The two main characters, Kennedy Bennett, a curse weaver (along with her two sisters) and Aiden Connolly, a luck worker, have lots of potential for sparks in future books. Kennedy can also un-weave a curse from an object, which forms the main part of the story, trying to uncurse the famous (infamous?) Necklace of Harmonia, while trying to rescue her kidnapped sisters. It was a bit convoluted, with lots of references to Greek gods/goddesses/immortals, but Armstrong made it easy to follow. While I found it not as engaging as her A Stitch in Time, it was still very enjoyable and I will definitely read the next books in the series when they come out. Married to someone from Boston, I laughed at the name of the town “Unstable” (pronounced UN-stuh-bul). I also loved the “curse bomb” in the form of a Magic 8 Ball! Apparently when you remove a curse from something, you have to put that curse somewhere else and Kennedy concentrates them on a Magic 8 ball.) Also lots of love for Jonathan, the librarian, who knows how to research everything.
Carly Robins did a good job on the audiobook, voicing both female and male characters.
Thank you to NetGalley and Tantor Audio for the opportunity to read an advance readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
This is the first book written by Kelley Armstrong that I’ve ever read and I love her style. The book follows Kennedy Bennet (a curse weaver) and Aiden Connolly (a luck worker) as they try to find the infamous Necklace of Harmonia. But they’re not the only ones after it. Filled with schemes, kidappings, magic, a hint of romance, and great backstories, Cursed Luck is a very entertaining read.
Perfect book if you like:
✨ magic
✨ curses
✨ greek and roman mythology
The characters were all amazing, and Kennedy is an excellent narrator. I found myself gasping, laughing and all other sorts of other very notable reaction to the story.
There is not much to say without revealing parts of the plot, so I’ll just leave it simple: I love this book. Regarding the romance, during the last minute of the audiobook, Kennedy said everything that I had been thinking throughout the book and I am extremely satisfied with this ending for book 1.
Thank you to NetGalley and Tantor Audio for providing me with a copy of this audioARC in exchange for an honest review. I can’t wait to get my hands on a physical copy.
I normally do not like audiobooks since I tend to get distracted but this was not the case with Carly Robins’ narration style. She put a lot emotion into it and made very interesting voices for the different characters. I was, at absolutely no point during the 12 hr long audiobook, distracted by anything else.
I absolutely loved this book. I had to buy it because I requested on the last day it was available but I was at work n I guess I didn't download it 🤦♀️ so it archived.
Unfortunately I can't comment on the narrator due to that and it hasn't released yet on Amazon in Audible. But the book itself is absolutely excellent. Kelley Armstrong is one if my favorite authors and I devour her books. This one does not disappoint and I highly recommend it! I look forward to more and I am extremely excited fir the audio version to go up for sale.
I loved this book. It had lots of twists and turns and was very unexpected. Your two main characters were ones you loved to hate at times. They personality clashed but you knew, in the end, they would end up liking each other. The character you meet along the way had a unique background that you don't see coming. This book is a mystery and greek fantasy all rolled into one.
Thank you to NetGalley and Tantor Audio for providing me with a copy of this audioARC in exchange for an honest review.
I will always read everything Kelley Armstrong puts out. When I saw this audiobook I thought I’d give it a try - it’s my second ever audiobook and I know that this author would never let me down.
Kennedy comes from a line of curseweavers. She has her own shop in Boston and is doing well carving a life of her own out from under her sisters. This all changes when Aiden comes into her shop to hire her for a job, a mysterious tea caddy is left in her shop, and she can’t get a hold of her sisters.
The story has shades of Cainsville to it, but heads off in a different direction. I really enjoyed the ending, where the main issue is resolved but a new one is left in its place - book 1 has set up the rest of the series but still feels like a complete story in its own right. The interaction between Kennedy (who stands up for herself) and Aiden (who’s domineering but does try to hold himself back) is sweet, and I found the respect they develop for each other a nice change from the usual instalove that tends to occur.
Carly Robins was a wonderful narrator, and I thought she captured Kennedy perfectly. She also had clearly defined speech patterns for each character when they talked, which made it so much easier for me to keep track of what was going on. Her pacing was really good, and I enjoyed listening to her.
Obviously, I’m always going to say read this book but you know what? Give the audio a go too - it’s definitely worth it.
I absolutely love this book! Literally the only negative thing is that I have to wait or the next book to come out.
While Kelly Armstrong books can be hit or miss for me, this one was fun. I really enjoyed the characters and storyline and can't wait for this series to continue.
The narrator was good but her reading style is little slow so you may have to speed it up a little :) Otherwise, it was an enjoyable listen.
If you know me at all, then you know that I absolutely adore Kelley Armstrong. I’m doing a reread of her Women of the Otherworld books currently. And I keep an eye out for her new releases. This is one I had my eye on and had preordered. But seeing that audiobook available to request on NetGalley?
Well, I obviously had to request it. And I got it! I was so excited that I could start this book straight away. It took me no time at all to get through, and I can’t recommend it more.
This is the start of a new series where some people have magic in their family lines. These are specific forms of magic, thought to go back to groups of mystical people from the Ancient Greeks etc. Kennedy Bennett is a curse weaver with an antique shop. When a man walks in one day asking to hire her for a job, she doesn’t realise he’s asking for more than he’s saying. Aiden Connolly is a luck worker, and he needs a curse weaver to help him win and remove the curse from an important necklace. But he’s not the only one looking for a curse weaver, so when Kennedy’s sisters are in danger. She has to team up with him to find them.
I mentioned the Ancient Greek part, though it isn’t in the summary on the back. Because where their powers come from is important. I can’t go into detail as spoilers. But if you’re into Greek mythology, then this book will definitely be for you. I didn’t know about it going into it, it was a great surprise. But I’d have been more excited for the book had I known about it.
The gods are obviously mentioned a lot, so one thing that I loved that I wanna add: non-binary Hermes. All I’m gonna say on the god front. It excites me, and it should excite you too.
This book was so good. If you’re looking for a book with a ship that has a lot of banter? As well as a great cast of side characters? This is definitely the book for you. I adored Kennedy and Aiden’s interactions. They were so funny, and despite how different they were from each other, they really worked. They kind of reminded me of a mix between Paige and Lucas from her Otherworld books with Olivia and Gabriel from the Cainsville books. I did also like their interactions with the side characters. I like both Kennedy and Aiden’s siblings. I’m kind of excited to read more about them too. They’re so different to our protagonists, but I love their relationships all the same.
If you like cosy mysteries as well as paranormal books, you might be interested in this one. There’s definitely action, but it very much had a cosy mystery vibe. Kennedy is from a small town; she loves her cat, and she runs an antique store. She stumbles across everything through her work, and there’s a love of museums and mysteries and things. It didn’t detract from the paranormal side of the book. It actually added to it. As it gave you a good understanding of the world, whilst still making it a lot of fun to read.
I should add something about the narrator since I did read this as an audiobook. The narrator was good. She changed her voice enough to suit the different characters, so it didn’t feel one-note. But even when she did accents, it didn’t seem too ridiculous. She had a good voice, and it was genuinely enjoyable to listen to. I didn’t feel the need to stop and listen to something else for a bit. So I count that as a win. I listened on x2.5 speed and was able to chores whilst still listening along and understanding. For me, it really worked.
If you can’t tell, I absolutely loved this book. I knew I would likely enjoy it. But I didn’t know how much. I said earlier I may have been more excited if I knew about the greek mythology to come. The book does start off a lot like you’d expect a paranormal cosy mystery to be. But once you really get into the story, and you start finding things out? Oh my god. There are some changes to the Greek mythology. It’s just really things like Hermes gender, and who is who’s kid mostly. Stuff you expect to see changed in mythology retellings. So it wasn’t irritating. It made sense for the story. And when your characters are talking about myths anyway, you never know what version the author has decided the characters know. So that all worked.
This probably going to wind up being my favourite book of the month, if not the year. I am so excited to delve more into this series. And I think you should all be reading it too.
I love Kelley Armstrong’s past works! So I was super excited when I received this ARC. But, unfortunately this fell flat for me. I need romance in my books and the hero was a total dud for me. Since I always imagine myself as the heroine when I read lol. The whole God and Goddess aspect wasn’t really doing it for me unfortunately.
But, a total plus and deserves 5 stars is the narrator, Carly Robins. She is one of my favorite narrators.
Thank you Netgalley and Tantor Audio for this ARC.
This was Fun, slow and enjoyable. The writing is fantastic and i really loved listening to it all unfold. It’s a great book to a new urban fantasy series.
Kelley Armstrong is in my top 5 author list. I always look forward to her books. I know many of these works have been posted serially online but I prefer to wait for the bundled project. I’m so glad I waited and was able to experience this tale from start to finish. It was a great start to a new series and I’m excited to read/listen to the next installment!

A big thank you to NetGalley and Tantor Audio for the audiobook ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this audiobook. This is the first book in a new series. It has such potential. I am curious as to how things will go moving forward. I am a fan of Ms. Armstrong. This was by no means my favorite book but it was ok. I enjoyed it up to the point where it became about gods/goddesses. I am sort of over that god/goddess thing. For me it distracts from the story. I enjoyed the narrator and the characters for the most part. I know many will love this book, but its all personal preference. I loved the curse aspect and the untangling. Overall it was just a 3 star for me.
I received a free copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I read this as a serial on the author’s website, but I wanted to see how it translated to the audiobook. As I previously enjoyed the serial, I was really interested in seeing how it translated to audio book. I was pleased I found the narrator both fun and engaging and reading fit well with the story. I’m already looking forward to the next one, and would be happy with both the audio version or digital/ print version.
