I like dragons, I like magic, and I like the underdog with secret powers. This book has all of those and an interesting intrigue. BUT it didn't flow for me, it felt very bumpy. Switching between Maggi and Griffen means switching between the first person and third-person perspective, which felt jarring.
And for me personally, there were too many names. Till the end of the book, I couldn't keep them apart. I still don't know who is who for the king's man, they all got a name but not much of a character and were introduced almost all at the same time. That made it hard to follow the action and feel bad for someone dying.
Ultimately I would say if you like medieval fantasy with a definite touch of Arthurian knights and can live with shifting perspectives it's not a bad read.
The Color of Dragons is a story about Maggie, a girl with powers that she doesn't know the depth to or how to control them. She is also drawn to the dragons of the kingdom. She encounters Griffin who is in charge of hunting down the dragons. They both grow fond of one another and try to help one another when obstacles are in their way. This was an easy read. There is alternating POVs which might get confusing for some readers. I also wish the ending was more developed. There was a twist, but it could have used more development throughout the novel.
Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for an arc in exchange for an honest review.
The Color of Dragons By R.A. Salvatore and Erike Lewis was great. I loved the premise, the characters, and the finish. All in all it was a lovely escape into fantasyland for a bit.
This was a fun quick book with plenty of dragons and action but also a little of everything. It switches between 1st and 3rd person which I found very interesting. I worried that it would ruin the flow of things but it didn't! The ending stands out as spectacular. I'm pretty jaded when it comes to fantasy books, I could usually see a twist coming a mile away. However the last paragraph through me for a loop and made me eagerly await a sequel. 4 out of 5 Stars.
An overall solid read with decent pacing and interesting characters. There was something about the writing style that didn't sit well with me personally, but I enjoyed getting to know the characters and the politics of the world within the story.
I received this book for free for an honest review from netgalley #netgalley
Not what I was expecting in the very best way. The setting was magical and so realistic at the same time.
This was an interesting story but really hard for me to get into. Unfortunately I didn't love the author's writing style, so even though the plot was interesting, I couldn't love the story. Sometimes it felt like we were missing key things that were happening inside the main character's head but weren't told to the reader. It made it so I kept going back to read pages again to make sure I didn't miss something important. The plot was interesting though so I think some readers might really enjoy it.
A fun, easy to read adventure made better with dragons. Maggie has powers, if only she could control them. Griffin is a knight, tasked with hunting down dragons in the kingdom. I was not a huge fan of the first person to third person switch between POV's. It very choppy between chapters to get an inside look into Maggie's inner thoughts with first person and then start reading third person when it moved to Griffin. I think we lost out on a good opportunity to either stick with Maggie completely, or get an equally in depth look into Griffin's inner mind.
The story moved along well, the stakes were high enough to keep me reading although there were some times I found myself wanting to skip ahead. The relationship between Maggie and Griffin was light enough for a YA novel but at times the adult reader in me wished it was a little more in depth with just a touch more intimacy, not necessarily physical but even a little more emotional intimacy would have been nice. The romance came off a little flat and fast but again, this is a YA and there is only so far a romance can go in YA.
The ending was good but there was a twist at the end that I wish had been more explored within the book itself or kept for an entirely separate book. Without giving any spoilers away, the twist was slapped into the final two sentences of the book and then it just ended. I actually said out loud, "wait, what?" and was really disappointed that I couldn't read more into this. Maybe there will be a second book detailing this new character and their life and how it connects to Maggie and Griffin, which I would absolutely read because the twist came out of nowhere and has the potential to be a really cool plot. (Hint hint authors, make this a sequel !! Please!)
If you like magic and dragons this is one you won't want to miss.
This was a really fun read - I love the magic concepts in it. The politics was really fun to read about and of course it had an amazing DRAGON! It would be a nice book to get you out of a reading slump, or if you need to cleanse a reading palette. Thank you for letting me read this book early!
I absolutely loved this book! I really enjoyed the dynamic between Maggie and Griffin. This book was full of action, adventure, and romance that I really enjoyed. I will be purchasing this book for my library's Ya collection.
The characters will suck you in and make you want to finish this one. Overall not bad, And for a love story which I’m not to keen on this was enjoyable.
This was even better than I expected! I don't tend to like alternating POVs in books but this one only has two, Maggie's and Griffin's, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I ALMOST stopped reading once I realized it was alternating POVs but I am SO GLAD that I kept reading!
I love the MCs, but the side characters add so much to the story. I want to read more about them and find out what happens to everyone else ~after~ this book. Whatever you think this book is like, it's even better! 5 stars from me.
