I wish to thank NetGalley St. Martin’s Press Publishers for allowing me to read an advanced copy of this book. I have voluntarily read and reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

What a story! What a tremendous author whose story you cannot put down and do not want to ignore. The story is set in Carolina in two time frames. One in 1965 and one in 2010. The main focus of the book is in 1966 during the Civil Rights era when Ellie goes against her small town thinking and joins SCOPE to get out and help people register to vote. The second part of the book is when she returns home many years later to help take care of her brother and father and comes face to face with the past and the new families who are moving into her home town. You will be informed, touched and totally caught up in this story. Thank you Diane Chamberlain for another excellent book. I cannot wait to read whatever you publish next.

Every book that Diane Chamberlain writes is absolutely amazing! I just finished reading The Last House on the Street and am blown away. What I love most is that the book deals with very real life issues, specially race & voting. The book is the perfect amount of drama, heart-filled emotion, & suspense. I will be telling everyone about this book!!

Another winner by Diane Chamberlain- no surprises there! This is the story of 2 women- Ellie, in 1965, and Kayla, in 2010. The chapters alternate between both narrators and timelines and I found myself equally invested in each one. The 2 stories converge as the book continues, creating a story that is both haunting and hopeful.

I was easily able to picture the surroundings in both timelines, and really felt like I was right there beside the storyteller. Some of it from the earlier timeframe was hard to read, as Chamberlain did an amazing job of highlighting the inequities between races and the people who continued to drive those inequities. I rooted for Ellie as she fought to do what was right, even as everyone she knew was against her.

The book is sad, but you know going in that the book will be sad based on the subject matter. That being said, it's hopeful as well. Chamberlain is a master at giving you a book where you feel both of those emotions at once.

Overall, great book, per usual, that I would strongly recommend! Thanks to Netgalley for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

What an incredible, atmospheric read! Diane Chamberlin never fails to disappoint and The Last House On The Street is no exception. I was on the edge of my seat until the end!

I love when a book starts put with 2 stories and then somewhere in the middle you start to see them weaving together...this book did not disappoint! It brought those two stories together perfectly! Loved the characters and the stories they told. Definitely recommend it!

And yet another great book by Chamberlain. I really enjoy her books and this one did not disappoint. The book switches back and forth between 1965 (the height of the civil rights movement) and 2010, but it is easy to follow the timeline.

Set in North Carolina we find Ellie who isnt committed to what her family believes and spends her summer fighting for civil rights. And thereby alienating her family and friends. Meanwhile we jump ahead to 2010 where we find Kayla, where together with her husband and child, designs a house on the very spot that holds the secrets that happened in 1965. Strange things begin to happen and we are on a course which brings out all the turmoil faced, the deep secrets hidden and the truth finally.

Loved this book, and you will too. Make sure you get it when released in January 2022. Thanks to #Netgalley for this ARC #fivestars #thelasthouseonthestreet

This book was amazing. It definitely didn’t end the way I’d hoped it would, although I kind of assumed it wouldn’t. I couldn’t believe the level of evil that the people closest to Ellie stooped to, and I was glad that I was right in thinking something was off with Garner’s death. He deserved every bit of it! The time jumps were good, but I really enjoyed Ellie’s storyline the most. The time period represented is so well written that I felt transported to that era. This is definitely a book I’d recommend and I found it next to impossible to put down!

Thanks Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. Kayla and her daughter are moving in to a new house that Kayla no longer wants. Kayla's husband died in a freak accident in that house. Many people believe that the area is haunted. When Kayla starts receiving threats, sh tries to find out what happened in the area more than fifty years ago. I enjoyed this book.

When I see Diane Chamberlain has a new book, I know that I am going to read it and I am going to enjoy it. Her stories capture you from the start and keep you until the end. I also feel like I learn something by reading her books. The Last House on the Street is set in 2010 and 1965. Kayla Carter in 2010 is moving into a new house after the tragic death of her husband. Ellie Hockley in 1965 is ready to help SCOPE and get the black population of Derby County registered to vote. How these two women become linked is surprising and a little sad.

Diane does an amazing job of showing the difference in races in the South in the mid 60s.. I feel like she was able to put me there to see the hardship and struggle. There was so much in this book.

Ellie and Kayla meet and don't know how they are going to help each other to get the full story of what is happening with Kayla and what happened to Ellie, This story broke my heart. I felt for both women. Kayla was grieving and moving into her and her husband's "dream home". Ellie came home to help with her brother's final days and is pulled right back into what happened before she left for California. Ellie didn't know what happened the night she realized that she couldn't live in North Carolina anymore. Kayla's house and the wood behind it reveal what happened and let Ellie find the truth.

Thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for the ARC of this book All opinions expressed are my own.

It sounds cliche, but I honestly couldn’t put this book down. The few times I had to, I found myself distracted with regular day to day life thinking about what would happen next in the book.

The Last House on the Street by Diane Chamberlain is such a different read. It starts as a creepy, mysterious read but turns into creepy in a different way, mixed with the most powerful ideas. It is a story about race, love, hate, families, friendship, and so much more. It was eye-opening, gut-wrenching, and thought provoking.

I truly am appreciative to both netgalley and the publishers for this ARC. This is a book that everyone should experience.

I absolutely loved this book. The dual timelines of Ellie in 1965 and Kayla in 2010 were both interesting and moving. Ellie's story was particularly powerful. The characters were all very well developed and the book was so well written. The Dream Daughter was one of my favorites a couple of years ago and I realize I need to go back and read more of Diane Chamberlain's older books. Thanks to NetGalley for the digital ARC.

A truly excellent novel!
Ellie Hockley is introduced to us in 1965, where she lives a privileged life in Round Hill, NC, goes to college with her best friend and is in a committed relationship with her boyfriend who has already graduated college. She is expected to spend her summer working in her father's pharmacy but decides instead to work for SCOPE a project to help black individuals to register to vote, at a time when they are not yet able to, and people want to see them never be able to. Despite the dismay of her family and friends, she heads out on this adventure and learned way more than she bargained for, about herself, her world and racism.

Fast forward to 2010, where we meet Kayla Carter, who is moving into a new home in Round Hill, NC, after losing her husband who was helping to build the home. Before ever moving in, she is warned off of doing so by a woman who shows up in her office to tell her that her home does not belong and she should never move into a home where her husband died. Despite her discomfort she moves into the home and weird and alarming things begin to happen. Then she meets Ellie Hockley, which brings up things for them both.

Both women are tied in their own ways to an unsolved mystery from 1965 and as the book progresses they get closer to answers.

Diane Chamberlain wrote another amazing book, telling two, initially seeming, unrelated stories that begin to weave around the other. The characters are amazing, especially young Ellie Hockley who you cannot help but like, and the cast of characters she is connected to through SCOPE. Somewhat less appealing is Ellie as an adult, but she grew on me as the story unfolded and I better understood her behaviors. Both stories were compelling in their own right but became incredible in the light of what you learn as the story progresses... things I was not at all thinking about as I read, so I was very much surprised by some of the turns in the book. I felt like I also got an education about how things were in the rural south in the 60's. While I have learned about this in school, I have never quite seen it through the same eyes as I did while reading this novel. I did not want this book to end... it was so good!

Two timelines
Ellie 1965 civil rights activist
Kayla 2010 widowed architect
Small town of Round Hill, NC
The past and the present collide in this moving and suspenseful story told from two different points of view and two different timelines.
Someone is trying very hard to discourage and scare recently widowed Kayla from moving into her dream home. A home that she built and designed with her husband on a quiet little street with mysterious woods that hold a lot of history and mystery.
Kaylas neighbor Ellie has her own story to tell about growing up on Hockley st and in Round Hill NC. Ellie’s POV tells the story of a young girl trying to fight to make a difference for change and justice not just her town but in history. As the story progresses, their lives begin to inner twine more than either of them could have expected.
Diane Chamberlain has written a beautiful story full of love, heartbreak and suspense that will leave readers stunned.

Thank you to Net Galley for an ARC of this book! I read the synopsis which mentioned "secrets" and I immediately clicked download, thinking it would be a thriller (my normal genre). While it is mysterious, it is definitely not a thriller, but I am incredibly glad I branched out here. This book was excellent. It is told in 2 POV's with 45 years in between them. At first you don't understand how the 2 characters relate to each other, but the author then seamlessly reveals their connection. The characterization is excellent. As many others have said, the subject matter is difficult but it is also timely and important. I will definitely seek our further books by this author.

I could not put this book down. I literally devoured the words on the page.

Set in the backdrop of the civil rights movement in North Carolina, tragedy strikes in young Ellie’s world. Today after a tragedy Kayla moves into the same neighborhood and by chance meets Ellie. Slowly the events of one summer come to light in the Last House on the Street.

Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read and review this book. All opinions are my own.

The Last House on the Street grabs you immediately and sucks you right into the story! What do Ellie Hockley, a budding civil rights activist in 1965 and Kayla Carter, a young recently widowed architect have in common?

Ellie Hockley is a pharmacology student at the local university near Round Hill North Carolina. Her life is pretty much laid out: she has a wonderful boyfriend who adores her and is on track to get into a career choice that interests her.. When she hears about a project to help black Carolinians register to vote, she finds an unexpected calling to help. This decision will enrage her family, alienate her from her community and widen her eyes and impact her heart.

Kayla Carter is a 28 year old architect who suddenly finds herself widowed with a young child. Prior to her beloved husbands accidental death they had been building their dream house on Hockley Street in the new development of Shadow Ridge Estates. Although reluctant to move into the house they have built together and where her husband died, Kayla has no choice but to do so. Although there are other homes being built in the neighborhood, the only other house on the street is the old Hockley place. Hockley Street is a scary place; squirrels hanging in trees, an attempted kidnapping of her daughter...just what is going on in Shadow Ridge Estates?

Told in alternating voices, the stories of Kayla and Ellie come ever closer. The two women will change each others lives in untold ways. Well written, deeply moving, the pages just keep turning themselves until everything is clear. A truly great read!

I am nit a stranger to this author, having read several of her books! I was so excited to be able to read this one 5 months prior to the release due to the generosity of the author, NetGalley and St Martins Press!
This book is set in two time periods weaving the story through generations of the character’s portrayed in the book! While I thought I knew what was going on I was so wrong! This book has shook me to my core, a reminder of how far we’ve come and yet how much things are still the same! Diane Chamberlain has done it again, another great story being told of truths that have occurred in our history!
Add this to your to be read list today, coming January 2022!!

Wow. This one will stay with me for a very long time!
Diane Chamberlain books are always a treat to read, this one is actually two books that somehow connect, you take the past and the present and you weave, educate, and create some of the most unforgettable characters I have ever read… a true storytelling genius!

Diane Chamberlain outdid herself with this book. Two stories are told. One from 1965 and one from 2010 and all of a sudden, the two stories tie together. A great writing style and a great cast of characters. Most of the characters appear in both timeframes. A very appropriate finish to the book as well. I highly recommend it and thank you to NetGalley for this ARC.

SO good! This book hooked me the whole time! I loved the back and forth between present day and back in the 1900’s. It was not as scary as I expected but still a great thriller!
