On a cold, icy planet, Sena is a survivor. She'll do anything she must to survive after losing her parents to the annual sled race years ago - anything but attempt the race, that is. When she runs afoul of a local underground boss, though, her desperation leads her to steal a valuable fighting wolf and help a team of scientists finish the race. Once the team get to the end of the race, they've promised to help Sena escape the planet she hates. Filled with fantastic world building and a well-crafted sense of almost-electric danger, this is a great choice for adventure and fantasy readers.

This book went on too long. The plot took forever to get to the point and then the ending was resolved poorly and made me loose interest in the characters.

This is an atmospheric story about survival and nature. The barren and cold land was so well described and the setting and world building were well done. I wouldn't say this was fast paced like some of the other reivews, but it was definitely tense and kept me reading. If you are a fan of Jack London, this might be a comparable read for that, particularly for someone not interested in classics but wants a similar feel to that.

This is also an emotionally engaging story between a girl and the wolf, well, genetically modified wolf, and loyalty. I don't think I was emotionally prepared for those feelings.

I should have known that a book about a ice planet would have pacing that was positively glacial.

It is a shame because I was really loving the worldbuilding and the characters, but the pacing just made the entire book feel dead in the water.

Thank you to NetGalley and Wednesday Books for an ARC of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review!

This was a fun book! A bit slow to start, but once it gets going, there is an interesting story A scientific expedition with a fight for survival. A unique story for sure!

I saw this was pitched as Balto meets jack london and i loved it. This book is a unique and enjoyable diversion from my normal diet of ya fantasy. Although the premise might not seem like much, the setting is captivating and it's got a plot based on character development, rather than romance like your traditional ya book these days. This book feels like a well researched, well loved project, and the writing definitely proves that.

This was fast paced and quite intense journey through the forest. I’m a sucker for a good survival story and this one didn’t disappoint.

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the advanced reader copy. This is my honest review.

This story was a great read and wonderful world building of a girl living and surviving on an ice planet. It took me a minute to get into but, I enjoyed it until the end.

Thank you to the publisher for the chance to read this book, and I'm sorry my review is so late!!

This was a cool and unique YA sci-fi: I love the resurgence of YA scifi. Unfortunately, the pacing missed the mark for me a little bit and I felt we were really told the main character's motivations rather than shown them, so they didn't feel believable.

On the positive side, the world building was quite interesting and the atmosphere was VERY well written - you really felt the cold atmoshpere.

I would try something else from this author!

I totally see the links to Balto, White Fang, and other wolf related titles, but Long's novel still stands alone. Cold the Night, Fast the Wolves was a fast-paced, intense journey through wilderness. Check this one out if you like survival stories that are motivated by characters!

This is a compelling story about family, friendship, strength, and survival. I'll admit I didn't immediately love Sena when I started reading, which almost made me stop, but I did grow to appreciate her. I enjoyed watching the friendship blossom between Sena and Remi, which is always nice to see in books since many show already established friendships. This was a nice read, not one I'd normally pick up.

Cold the Night, Fast the Wolves is easily one of my favorite reads this year. It's a riveting tale that had as much heart as it did action and adventure. Although Sena can be frustrating, her heartbreaking story helped me understand her risky decisions and why she protected her heart against the people who cared about her. She may not have wanted it, but Iska was the family she needed. I was excited at their first meeting and knew their relationship would not only be the best part of the book but also my favorite part. In addition to Iska and Sena's bond, I also liked the world building. Long does an excellent job of providing the icy planet with a long and complicated history. There was a sense of completeness to the world, and I was completely immersed in it. While it does take a bit to get to the race the planet is known for, I did not mind it very much. Building relationships and creating trust between the characters was necessary to ensure readers would be invested in the outcome. And I was. I found myself sitting up straighter and holding the book closer so as not to miss anything. This was such a wonderful read, and I cannot wait for the next book.

This was a futuristic sci-fi novel about a girl who doesn’t belong and a wolf that’s misunderstood. There is a race across the planet with (essentially) a dogsled. It was overall, fine. I think it had some promising aspects of the plot and characters, but overall it left a little something to be desired.

This was such a wonderful YA fantasy debut! I absolutely am feral for survival stories, and dogsled racing has been a passion since middle school. The book is a bit on the slower side when it comes to pacing, but it was still quite enjoyable!

Cold the Night, Fast the Wolves is an outstanding sci-fi/dystopian story about survival with incredible world-building. Sena desperately wants to just make enough money to get off her frozen planet. She wants to forget about the sled races that left her an orphan. When she makes a gangster angry, she finds herself with an unlikely ally, Iska, the gangster's prized fighting wolf. Her only chance of escape is to help scientist win the sled race using her survival skills. Can Sena and Iska make it out alive? Highly recommended! Be sure to check out Cold the Night, Fast the Wolves today.

Cold the Night, Fast the Wolves was a unique adventure story set in a fairly realistic dystopian world. I enjoyed the relationship between our main character and a wolf that has been injured fighting. I found the pacing to be quite slow, but still was intrigued enough to get to the end.

This book is well-crafted, unique, and fast paced. The author creates an interesting alternative world but the dangers and motivations there are universal. Sena is a strong, sympathetic character. The bond between Sena and Isken is reminiscent of Thornton and Buck, and the landscape is cold and dangerous, but the similarities end there. For anyone who enjoys books about self-actualization, survival, and loyalty, this is a great read.

I’m not sure if it was just me and my mood or the book but I had to DNF this one. Will update my review if I ever try again.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing this arc in exchange for an honest review

When the publisher reached out to offer me an early copy, I could not say no. Now I don’t read the synopsis of a book often, but this one immediately caught my attention. I mean wolves, a race, and found family? How could I not want to read that?

However, I had so many issues with the pacing. It felt like it took FOREVER for the actual race to start. And then it was over before I knew it. I was so looking forward to this epic snow race but was let down. I barely had time to process what happened.

And I can honestly say, I don't remember the characters at all. Nothing about them especially the main character stuck out to me. They just all blur together at this point.

I just wanted and expected more.
