The artwork is absolutely GORGEOUS and I will take more Roman Torchwick anywhere I can get him.
This was a fun expansion off of RWBY.
This volume starts out with a school dance, and gives us some fun character development to balance the action that follows. After the dance, the teams get their first missions as Hunters and Huntresses, and team RWBY is paired with Doctor Oobleck, and sent to the location they'd hoped to investigate- the area they suspect Rowan Torchwick and White Fang are hiding in. When Ruby disappears during her turn as lookout, the rest of the team set out to find her, and....I'm not telling!
The art is lovely as always, and the action just flows so nicely I can see it happening in my mind. This volume concludes the Beacon Arc with a satisfying, hopeful ending that looks toward further adventures, and I'm looking forward to the next arc!

There is a dance. Then, a school practice exercise that turns into a real fight. RWBY: The Official Manga Vol 3 is the last volume in this prequel to the anime series.
I’m sure I would have enjoyed this entire series more if I had watched the anime first. As a standalone, it works but other than the fighting scenes, there isn’t much going on here. RWBY: The Official Manga Vol 3 earns, as did the previous volumes, 3 stars. However, it did encourage me to begin the anime.
Thanks to VIZ Media and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.
After volume two I decided to give this one more go but I really struggled getting through this. I stopped/started a few times and when I eventually finished it, I felt like there hadn’t been any overall progress in the story.
I’m not sure how much having no background knowledge of RWBY is impacting my enjoyment. I would have hoped the manga could have been enjoyed separate from the tv series but I feel like readers are expected to have the context from the show to follow the manga better.
On the whole this entire volume felt like mini filer chapters or side stories that are normally bonus chapters as the end of the main books, not something that was the main story.
Thank you to NetGalley, VIZ Media, Bunta Kinami, and Rooster Teeth for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
This volume begins with a dance to commemorate the coming Vytal Festival. This is a great chance to see some character development, especially with Pyrrha and Jaune. When Ruby lacks a date, she easily finds an alternative way to entertain herself: fighting the bad guys trying to take advantage of the distracted party-goers!
Afterward, the teams of Beacon get to go on actual, legitimate missions as huntsmen and huntresses. Team RWBY gets their requested location, even though Ruby might have hinted to Headmaster Oz that Torchwick (or his lackeys) might just be in the area. Along with plenty of Grimm, who brought the place to ruin. When Ruby vanishes from her post on watch, team RWBY must fine and save her, though they may find themselves against a familiar foe...
This volume is full of well-drawn action scenes and jumps from one moment to the next with ease. The art is phenomenal. This volume concludes the Beacon Arc, though there are plenty more arcs in the world of RWBY and I hope to see their manga adaptations come to life.
True Rating: 3.5 stars
I think this final volume was a good installment. I really enjoyed my time with these characters. I do think there are other magical girl stories that I enjoy more, but I think any RWBY fan would be happy with this manga adaptation. I am much more likely to pick up the anime now.
