Secrets collide and romance sparks!

Well, Jen Turano has done it again. Every time I pick up one of her books it becomes my new favorite. To Write A Wrong is now my new favorite. Yes, I'm definitely waiting for the Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency novel that finally answers my burning questions about Eunice Holbrooke, but, this book, and Daphne and Herman quite captured my heart.

As with all of Jen Turano's previous novels, To Write A Wrong is utter perfection. It's an exquisite blend of frothy historical romance, laugh out loud romantic comedy, and surprisingly chilling romantic suspense. I got a real kick out of the heroine and hero both being authors, as a reader it's always fun getting some insight into the life of a writer...even if it's fictional.

One of the things that I truly loved about To Write A Wrong, aside from, well, pretty much everything about the story, was that both Daphne and Herman have to learn what a hero truly is. He's not just a handsome face and a fearless risk-taker who has little regard for others' safety. He's a man who will defend a lady, even with his life, who chooses to do the right thing, and someone who treats those around him with respect. And, of course, they also learn that sometimes a hero, or heroine, is right in front of you.

Jen Turano has a true winner with her second Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency novel. It was delightful, charming, quite poignant in some places, and just so much fun to read. The only bad thing? Now I have to wait practically forever for the next book in the series.....

Yes - read it!. Very nice, fun read. Interesting characters, unpredictable storyline and a bit of a mystery. It was a lovely way to spend an afternoon. This was book 2 in a series which I didn't realize so I need to go back & read the first because this was fun.

I received an ARC from Netgalley & Bethany House to help prepare my honest review.

Oh, Daphne. One of the things I loved most about book 1 in this series, To Steal a Heart, was side character Daphne and her quirky antics. So you can imagine how much I was looking forward to Daphne being the heroine in her own story, To Write a Wrong! I am pleased to report that I found her just as delightful in her starring role, and I read this book with a big grin on my face that just didn’t go away.

Daphne’s sincere earnestness to discover who’s trying to kill renowned mystery author Herman Henderson is hilariously juxtaposed against how simultaneously horrible AND lucky she actually is at it. Her innate quirkiness is buoyed further by her undercover persona in a house party full of authors (where she must keep no less than 3 of her identities a secret at any given time) and equally quirky supporting characters. Add to that some classic Turano “madcap mayhem” in the form of rescue bustles, pirate costumes, bad poetry, secret passages and a lengthy suspect list, and you’ll find yourself hoping laughter burns as many calories as actually exercising!

Herman is a swoony hero with his own set of quirks, and I loved the affectionately tongue-in-cheek look at authors that his – and Daphne’s – profession allows. Their meet-cute made me laugh out loud, and it just got better from there. The banter, the admiration, the affection, all of it had me grinning from ear to ear and it was made all the more endearing by the fact they both are rather clueless as to a) their appeal and b) the state of the other’s feelings.

In Daphne’s quest to eliminate the threat to Herman’s life, we also get to explore some deeper issues like anxiety, grief, fear, trauma, and gender roles / disparity in the late 1800s. The author seamlessly integrates these themes into the story without sacrificing either their importance or the light-hearted tone of the book. That’s a rare combination, but Turano pulled it off superbly.

Bottom Line: Any time I pick up a book by Jen Turano, I know I’ll be laughing often. To Write a Wrong is no exception. Quirky & endearing characters romp through every page, and just when you think it can’t possibly get any zanier… it does. A delightful story with hints of Clue, Oscar Wilde, Georgette Heyer, and a comedic voice all Turano’s own, To Write a Wrong is exactly the feel-good story we all need to be reading right now.

Love love love Jen!

This book had mystery, comedy and intrigue. Eunice and The grandmother were the stars of this book. Daphne mysterious life unfolds perfectly to fit the storyline. I enjoy how Jen handles character development. Herman's love for hid grandmother was at first over the top for me, but further in the story I found it endearing. I like confident intellectual men. Herman let Daphne be herself at all times and loved her all the more for it.

Ah...a new Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency book, from the queen of humorous historical fiction....yes, this book was a delight!
Daphne is quite the heroine, and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing her antics as an inquiry agent. Daphne and her rival mystery writer Herman (although he has no idea that she is also a mystery writer) are deeply involved in trying to solve the mystery of who is trying to kill Herman.
Lots of humor, bursts of action, fun, mystery, and so much more are all written together in a lovely way to give all of us readers another delightful new Turano book.
If you are wanting something fun to read, be sure and read To Write a Wrong!

To Write a Wrong is the second book in Jen Turano’s Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency series. Daphne Beekman is a mystery author who must write under a male pen name. Herman Henderson is also a mystery writer, but his adventures turn into real life ones when he becomes the target of several murder attempts. He turns to the Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency and though they’ve never solved an attempted murder, Daphne takes the case.

With Jen Turano’s customary humor, Daphne and Herman attempt to wade through the clues. This becomes even more complicated when Daphne goes undercover as his sophisticated typist, a persona exactly opposite Daphne’s true personality. Danger follows, of course, but Daphne also finds herself in the cross-hairs, too.

Without giving anything away, the ending takes a rather serious turn I hadn’t anticipated. But I thought the author handled it well, given the situation. She gave it respect it deserved while keeping things light enough not to cause the it to derail the story.

I loved how Daphne displayed the many layers of her self and Herman is quite the gentleman. I especially enjoyed that they were both writers. Plus, Cooper is a fantastic side character. Now I can’t wait for book three!

“Once again she found herself in danger of drowning in the cool depths of Herman’s eyes,”

“The Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency believed every woman deserved to be heard, but more importantly, they believed them.”

How have I never read Jen Turano before this book? What a delight to find, and I was completely entranced with the entire romance and mystery. Initially, I was a little thrown off by the silliness of Daphne’s imagination. However, then I came to love her personality, strength, courage, and intellect. She’s an heroine I related with. Her pursuit of justice for women in the Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency spoke remarkably well on the suffrages of women of her time. Turano wrote about important issues in history with a pen for a good romantic mystery.

“He would do whatever it took to see after her well-being, no matter the cost to himself.”

Herman was truly a dreamy hero in need of figuring out the mysterious accidents that kept happening to him. Daphne and the agency worked together to figure out who seemed intent on harming him. I loved how much he encouraged, protected and yet, came alongside Daphne in the search. It helped they both had and loved the gift of writing. It made for some intriguing and fun bookish conversations. If you love a mystery with a good sense of humour and an engaging plot, I think you’ll love this romantic mystery.

“Heroes were gentlemen who didn’t hesitate to defend a woman and didn’t hesitate to put their lives in jeopardy over a matter of honor.”

I was given an advanced reader copy by the publisher through NetGalley. All opinions are my own and have been given honestly.

To Write a Wrong by Jen Turano is the second book in the Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency and can be read as a stand-alone novel. Daphne Beekman makes her living by writing popular mystery books under an alias and working for the Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency. When another mystery writer Herman Henderson hires the Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency to determine who is out to murder him, Daphne goes undercover to solve the case while working as Herman's secretary. Can she keep her secret from Herman and the other mystery writers staying at his house? Why is someone out to kill Herman? Turano has once again created a witty, romantic, and charming cozy mystery that will have the reader waiting for the next installment.

I don't know how Turano keeps coming up with funny novels but she does. I laughed out loud. Daphne is such a well crafted character. She is so sincere in wanting to figure out the crime but she bungles events so many times. I've heard of crashing a dinner party but Daphne takes it to a new level. And who knew a bustle was a good defense against an arrow or could function as a flotation device? I mean, who else could create horrible poetry upon demand like Daphne does?

Within the midst of the humor are some interesting and serious issues. There is over protection from a grandmother because of a previous disaster. The plight of women at the time is well covered. Daphne is a mystery novelist but must write under a male pseudonym because, of course, women would certainly not do anything like that. And most distressing to me, a husband could have his wife committed to an asylum without reason.

I recommend this novel to readers who are ready for a good dose of humor and a sprinkling of romance along with some very interesting commentary on the times.

I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.

Miss Daphne Beekman is a mystery writer by day, inquiry agent by night. Known for her ability to puzzle out plots, she prefers working behind the scenes for the Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency, staying well away from danger. However, Daphne soon finds herself in the thick of an attempted murder case she's determined to solve.

Mr. Herman Henderson is also a mystery writer, but unlike the dashing heroes he pens, he lives a quiet life, determined to avoid the fate of his adventurous parents, who perished on an expedition when he was a child. But when he experiences numerous attempts on his life, he seeks out the services of the eccentric Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency to uncover the culprit. All too soon, Herman finds himself stepping out of the safe haven of his world and into an adventure he never imagined.

As the list of suspects grows and sinister plots are directed Daphne's way as well, Herman and Daphne must determine who they can trust and if they can risk the greatest adventure of all: love.

My review: Daphne is a famous mystery writer. But nobody knows it's her because she writes under a mans name. In this time of history women did NOT pursue a writing career. Her landlady at the boarding house she lives in runs the Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency. In a series of mishaps she is hired to find out who wants to kill Herman Henderson. He is also a mystery writer. Through a series of humorous events Daphne solves the case. Of course we know that Herman and Daphne fall in love. But the road to true love is sometimes rocky as they find out.

I recommend this book to everyone who likes a good mystery and love story with laughs along the way. I was given this book by Bethany House Publishing via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I was not compensated in any.

Jen Turano writes adventurous historical romance novels, filled with eccentric heart warming characters and wonderful dose of humor. To Write a Wrong is the second novel in the Bleeker Street Inquiry Agents series. The story moved along quickly as the mystery unfolds and there are many twists, turns and surprises. It is the perfect escapism read.

How do I put into words how much I love this book? Jen Turano is completely amazing! I know the moment I pick up one of her books that I’m not going to be able to think about much else. To Write a Wrong was one of my favorites to date! Daphne is a perfect combination of amazingly brilliant and interestingly flawed. I mean the girl faints at the most inopportune times. And instead of driving me crazy, it often makes me laugh out loud and love her all the more. I first met Daphne in the first book of the Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency novels, To Steal a Heart. If you have not read that book, I suggest you get it asap. That being said, I’m sure you would enjoy this book as a stand alone as well. You would just be missing out on more of the Bleeker Street Agency’s greatness. Can you tell I am dying for the third installment to come out? Anyway, back to this amazing book. Turano took me by complete surprise and there were so many unexpected twist and turns. I enjoyed every moment I spent reading this story. Herman was the perfect match to Daphne, and obviously needed a little adventure in his life. Their chemistry was one of a kind, and I loved watching them get to know each other. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Historical Romance with the perfect amount of mystery mixed in. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers and was in no way forced to post a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.

To Write a Wrong by Jen Turano is the second brilliant installment in her Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency series. This time, Miss Daphne Beekman takes center stage and rather steals the show.

Daphne, as it turns out (this isn’t a spoiler), is living a double life. To the outside world, she is pushing the boundaries as an inquiry agent, no career for a woman in this timeframe. But then, more scandalous than that, is her other profession, as a mystery novelist. So controversial is this role, that she has a clause in her publishing contract that forbid her revealing her alter ago.

Despite trouble from a tricky literary character and the habit of swooning, Daphne finds herself compelled to take on a case. Fellow author Herman Henderson claims there have been several attempts on his life. Despite writing adventurous character, Herman’s own existence is usually quiet. At least until he meets Daphne.

What follows is exactly what you’d expect from a Jen Turano book. High jinks, misadventure, hilarity and witty repartee. But then there’s also a more serious underlying message as well. (For more details on that, check out the Fiction Friday feature on my blog).

I read this while my family and I were all down with COVID-19 and I can honestly say if you need a little light in what seems at times, a bit of a dark world, then To Write a Wrong comes very highly recommended.

I really enjoyed this story! Some much heart and hilarity, which is what I expect from Jen Turano! Daphne and Herman had such an interesting journey, and it was delightful to read. Highly recommend!

A highly entertaining adventure, with a winning heroine full of daring!

A upbeat adventure, filled with action and laughter. Daphne Bleekman tends to be the one behind the scenes ferreting out answers and information, but with Gabriella gone on her honeymoon, she is left to take the lead when Herman Henderson comes seeking the Inquiry Agency's help.

I loved the interaction between Herman and Daphne, he is so supportive of Daphne throughout, and they make a great team. There are so many wonderful characters, some familiar and some brand new, I loved Herman's grandmother and her schemingly overprotective ways.

A rollicking adventure, with a danger laced mystery, and twisting plot. The charming characters captured my heart, and I didn't want to put this book down! I can't wait to read Eunice's story in the next book!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

When Mr. Herman Henderson, a mystery writer pops in to the Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency to inquire about their services to find out if someone is trying to kill him, he meets Miss Daphne Beekman an inquiry agent but also a mystery writer. They are soon working together to solve this mystery and their story is fun, dangerous and romantic. This author always makes her characters remarkable and so fun to follow. Loved this story! "To Write a Wrong has an clever plot with humorous incidents. The interactions between Daphne and Herman were enjoyable. And Daphne's penchant for swooning was cute and not overdone.

Daphne's attempts at disguising her identity as the wildly popular writer of mysteries only added to her charm. Whenever anyone began to suspect her reason for taking such copious notes or for her interest in grammar and word usage, she attempted to hide behind the claim of being a poet.

Jen Turano did well in taking a comedic element and carrying it through - in this case, the ridiculous bustles that she wore as part of her disguise. The way they continued to play a significant role in the events was both cute and awkward for Herman at the same time!

There is a strong theme of the need for women's rights. This included calling out the danger young ladies were in due to men attempting to take advantage of them. This was handled well and was not overly uncomfortable due to an excessive number of details shared.

While reading To Steal a Heart, also by Jen Turano, I noticed she used a lot of dialog to tell the story. And that it felt very overdone. I found that here as well, making sections of the story seem much longer than necessary and overwhelming the action. Some extra long sentences and awkward phrases distracted me from the story. To be fair, the copy I read was a pre-publication copy, so some of these may have been corrected before the actual release.

To Write a Wrong is a clean historical romance (aside from the mentions of the dangers to young ladies mentioned above). There is a hint of spiritual matters, though they are not prominent, nor even a theme of the story. Nothing is there to consider it a Christian romance as listed on retail sites.

I just have to say, I love Jen Turano's books. Her mastery and aptitude with words, her knack for combining lots of laughter with intrigue and her skill for seamlessly interconnecting faith and the characters’ lives is a true gift. I try to always be on a list for her newest books.

Daphne Beekman, an inquiry agent and mystery writer, tries to stay out of the spotlight. One evening when she goes by the office after hours, Daphne is startled when Herman Henderson, fellow mystery writer, shows up.

Dressed as a pirate, Daphne had planned to run by the office, which was only a few blocks from her home. Daphne hoped to garner ideas for her pirate tale. Herman wonders if he wants to retain the services of an agency which has a pressed paperboard cutlass-wielding pirate to unravel his problem.

So begins the delightfully, and sometimes harrowingly, adventurous tale of the Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency’s endeavors to solve the attempts on poor Herman Henderson’s life. Daphne’s escapades supply comic relief as well as clues to the mystery.

Several other characters in the story range from kind and genteel to horrific and deranged. The story of the latter’s character and his inexcusable behavior, along with its disclosure, may be difficult for some readers.

To Write a Wrong is part of a series but can be read as a standalone. However, to really enjoy the story, I recommend reading the first book in the series, too.
I received this book from Bethany House through NetGalley. However, my review is voluntary, and all opinions are my own.

Absolutely FABULOUS!
I love Jen Turano's style. She made me laugh and entertained me throughout the story.

I didn't really have a clue who was behind everything, but that was okay it was a story that allowed me to escape the current realities in our world.

It was fun getting to know Daphne better after book one in this story. There was so much more depth to her than what we saw in book 1 (another great read!). I also found Herman extremely entertaining. His character was so deep. From the opening scene with Daphne I knew it was going to be a great interaction between them, I wasn't disappointed.

I really had no idea who was behind everything, but that's okay. I enjoyed finding out!

The only "knock" against the book was the epilogue seemed unusually long and drawn out. However, I was reading an unedited copy, this may change in the final text. Regardless, I would recommend it to a Jen Turano fan and also to anyone who would like to check out her style.
