Brian Moylan has done his homework on Bravo and the Real Housewives franchise so kudos to him. You definitely need to be a Housewives fan to appreciate and understand this book since names and scenes are constantly referred to. Not being a fan of al the Housewives shows, I was left confused or indifferent during many parts of the book. True fans will love this book, however.
Great job with the narration. Super funny parts. Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the audio book in exchange for an honest opinion.
If you love anything Bravo, this book is for you. There is so much juicy behind the camera info and gossip in this book. Brian made it nice and mentioned it all!! A must read!!
What an interesting book. It’s no secret that The Real Housewives franchise is one of the most successful in reality TV. It had become a cultural touchstone for so many, and this book captures its history and significance in a really interesting way..
Thank you to the publisher and to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The Housewives is an excellent look at the origins and behind-the-scenes details of the world's most favorite reality series about women who have and who are TOO MUCH. My favorite part of the audiobook is author Brian Moylan's narration. He does an excellent job bringing life to his words through his performance and makes the book an enjoyable experience, like talking with a friend.
Brian Moylan did an absolutely fantastic job at recreating all of my favorite Housewives moments that will forever live in history, as well as recapping exactly how the franchise has gotten to where it is today. He did such a great job as researching the ins and outs of the history of reality tv and how these shows came to be. His talent in interviewing Bravolebrities is unmatched and he really knows how to get them to spill the tea. This was such an entertaining listen and I will surely be relistening to this in the future when I need a Housewives fill. Thank you to the published, author, and NetGalley for this advanced copy. 10/10
Unfortunately I have never been a huge fan of the desperate housewives or followed any of the series to closely. I found this book to be extremely on relatable and focused on shallow first world things.
I believe fans of the show may enjoy it if they don’t get enough of these women through their television shenanigans
Fun inside look into the behind the scenes of the Real Housewives series. Brian Moylan, writer of Vulture's RH series recaps, tells us the inside scoop on all the RH franchises, and takes a look at the how and why of the cultural phenomenon that is the RH. The details behind the casts trips make it well worth the read. Interviewees were a bit two-three times removed from the main casts for my liking, but still an interesting (if a bit overlong) read. For fans of the series' only.
This was exactly what I wanted in a summer read. Light, fun, and laugh-out-loud hilarious. I love all things RH and this is like all of Brian Moylan's recaps pulled together into one great audiobook! Also interesting to hear some "behind the scenes" juice from producers, executives and Housewives themselves. This book had me at "Sky Tops."
I was immediately turned off from this audio story because of the narrator’s voice. Once I tried to get used to listening to the terrible narrators voice, I started to instantly recognize the story from the housewives tv show. This story has already been told many times in the behind the scenes interviews and reunions.
Loved this book. I love all housewives well really anything Bravo. This was fun to get some of the secrets. Getting paid less than a berkin bag, The trips I thought were set up by Bravo. Just like alot of other reality shows. And year they are my favorite part. This book made me love that housewives shows even more.
This book is a GIFT to Real Housewives fans everywhere. Seriously, regardless of if you watch every city in the franchise, casually catch an episode or two, or are such a big fan that you'll never get over Dorinda leaving RHONY and are still secretly mourning the closure of Kyle by Alene Too, this book is for you.
I have always loved reading Brian Moylan's Real Housewives recaps on Vulture, and was excited when I heard that he was publishing a book about The Housewives. He brought the same level of gossip, humor and snark that I have come to expect from his writing to this book, and I loved every minute of it. Not only does he share behind the scenes facts about the casting and logistics of the franchise, but he even goes into the history of reality TV and it's evolution over the years as well as its cultural implications. He highlights some of the most famous one-liners and scenes from the show, and shares all of the efforts he went through to collect stories and perspectives from current and past housewives and producers.
I definitely recommend listening to the audiobook, as it's narrated by Brian himself. This book is pure fun - you'll laugh, you'll relive some of your favorite Bravo moments, and you might even learn something. Thank you to NetGalley, Flatiron Books, and Macmillan Audio for the opportunity to read and review the Audio ARC of this book.
I am very sorry to say, this book was not for me. Being a big Bravo and Real Housewives fan, I was very excited when I was blessed with the audio ARC. However, I just could not get into this book. I am not sure if it was the writing, the story as a whole, and or the narrator. I just know I didn't enjoy the book.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC for an honest review.
I have been obsessed with the Housewives since their inception. Growing up on reality TV (real and also scripted), I knew this was just the book that I needed to read. The Housewives tells the story of the Bravo series, but also gives behind the scenes insights and the historical background of the network and show. Everything in this book was completely fascinating, but also gave a nostalgic feel to take a walk down memory lane of iconic episodes.
The audiobook is narrated by the author, Brian Moylan. Brian is completely entertaining and engaging. His words are snarky and many times, tongue in cheek. I found myself laughing out loud multiple times, because Brian is hilarious. He knows how to deliver a line and do a killer Housewives impression. I didn't have to speed up the narration too much, which is a first for me (and I loved it).
This book is perfect for Housewives lovers or those that enjoy Bravo. I've already pre-ordered a physical copy and am sharing it with my mother in law, who also is obsessed with the housewives.
Thank you MacMillan Audio for the ALC. All opinions are my own.
This gave a deeper look into not only real housewives but reality tv as a whole. It answered some of the burning questions I have always wondered but never been able to find the answer to. There were some laugh out loud moments which I enjoyed. An easy listen that took me less than 72 hours.
3.5 stars
So, this is a very targeted audience with this book, but if you’ve watched any of the Housewives series you will probably enjoy this book!
Rain takes us from the very beginning of where Bravo started and to the first episode of The Real Housewives. I personally like watching many of the shows, so I was pretty interested in this book/audio. It was interesting to hear the information provided in this books\ and to get a peak into some information about the shows that I didn’t already know. I think Brian did a good job of narrating the book, he kept it interesting.
I definitely enjoyed this audio and would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the Real Housewives tv show.
If you are a Housewives fan, I think this is a must read. Moylan does a deep dive into all things Housewives- from fan Facebook groups, to casting and production, to who pays for everything, to the Housewives’ themselves. After listening, I walked away feeling like I could listen to another 5 hours. It was a fun walk down memory lane and made me appreciate the show even more. I also LOVED hearing Brian dish about how tight of a control Bravo has on all of its "talent", down to barring everyone from agreeing to be interviewed by him for the book. You didn't need their endorsement anyway! Recommend!
I'm a Bravo fan, and this book delivered. Here's what I liked:
-The book gives a great overview of the franchise and the mammoth it has become
-There's a lot of behind the scenes information like how the show gets cast, the relationship with the production companies, and the truth about editing
-I loved the parts how watching the franchise has fostered a sense of community for its fans
There's no question that this book is perfect for people obsessed with Bravo.
The audiobook was narrated by the author, and frankly, I think they should have gotten a professional narrator. His voice isn't very smooth, which can be distracting. When it comes to audiobooks, the sound of voice matters, I think it needs to be done by a professional unless you're a celebrity with a recognizable voice if you don't have one of those buttery voices. As a wise person once said, "THAT'S MY OPINION!" (Tamra Judge)
Any fan of the Housewives franchise MUST read this book immediately. Part history of reality TV and the show itself, part behind the scenes look, this book is filled with all of the facts and details and favorite moments you need. He interviewed both cast and crew to get all the details you could want.
My personal favorite part of this were the sassy lists in between chapters. They were hilarious! Now excuse me while I go back and binge watch some old episodes of the Housewives.
The author narrates this one himself and you can just hear his passion for the subject coming through along with the perfect amount of snark. This one makes for a great listen!
Thanks to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for the advanced copy of the audiobook!
This book is a fun history lesson for any Real Housewives fans. Brian Moylan did his research and I give him kudos for trying to wrangle as many housewives (former and present) and producers to gather information. For all the people that Brian interviewed, thank you for taking part of this because I was thoroughly entertained.
I love when an audiobook is not only engaging, but also is read by the author. Brian does a fantastic job unfolding the story, and behind the scenes takeaways from a favorite binge worthy TV phenomenon Real Housewives.
While we sit behind our TV screens, and watch the life of these privilege women across America ranging from LA, to New York, to Atlanta, we can’t help but identify with each and everyone of them even though our privilege may look very different than theirs.
Brian does a great job of toeing the line between making the Real Housewives empire relevant, and personal, but still keep in mind the satire of reality TV.
The author is knowledge, grounded, and has sound research of the Empires production, and is spot on with the behind the scenes producing that happens on these shows. I truly enjoyed the journey and highly recommend this book to anybody who is a fan of any branch of the Real Housewives.
