I received a complimentary copy of Nanny Needed from NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
This book blew my mind! I absolutely loved it! Everything took a turn for the unexpected. I could not predict much while reading this one. Sarah becomes nanny to Patty and her beautiful and poised mother, Collette, thanks to a flier posted by a much older stepson, Stephen. The wealthy and powerful Bird family expect only the best…as well as complete discretion. Georgina Cross has an excellent imagination and she has created a a very believable (but wild) world. Excellent book!
Great characters drives this thriller about a rich, secretive family and the quirky matriarch at its center. Sarah applies for a nanny position for the Uber rich Bird family. It’s seems a dream job! Short hours and great pay to care for a three year old girl. But, things aren’t quite what they seem. A fast read. I really enjoyed this story, but the ending felt a bit abrupt. Maybe a sequel? I’d buy it!
"Nanny Needed" was one of the craziest stories I have read in a long time. Sarah was raised by her Aunt Clara, whose death left Sarah will massive medical debt that she has been struggling to repay. Sarah and her fiancé Jonathan work as servers at a restaurant, but can barely make ends meet, especially living in New York City and especially with Sarah's debt burden. When she finds a flyer advertising a nanny position with an address in a wealthy section of the city, Sarah sees an opportunity to make some extra money and help relieve the financial stress. She has never been a nanny and has limited experience babysitting, but she likes children and figures it cannot be too difficult. The flyer states that "Discretion is of the utmost importance. Special conditions apply.", but Sarah just assumes that means the client is someone important who values their privacy.
The initial interview is somewhat strange, especially as she never sees or meets Patty, the little girl for whom she will be caring, even though her mother, Collette, was talking to her and interacting with her when Sarah arrived. However, Sarah is awestruck by Collette Bird and the penthouse where the Birds live. She is also offered a salary that far exceeds what she could ever make in her restaurant job. When she is offered the job, she quickly accepts, signing the contract, including a nondisclosure agreement. She should have read the contract more carefully, because events quickly occur that cause her to question her decision.
A quarter of the way into the story, there is a major revelation which upends everything, but with the threat of legal action if she breaks the contract, the assurance/threat by Stephen (Collette's stepson and the person who hired Sarah) and Mr. Bird that they will do whatever is necessary to protect the family and its reputation, and the persuasive powers of Collette, Sarah finds herself stuck in a job that is nothing like what she expected. The nature of the revelation is such that the reader may wonder how the story will continue as long as it does. However, the author manages to keep up the drama and suspense, with Sarah finding herself drawn in deeper and finding her life outside of the Birds' penthouse rapidly falling to pieces in response to a decision she makes and the ramifications of that decision. If the situation was not already crazy enough, the author has an even bigger surprise awaiting readers, with a stunning conclusion that few readers, if any, will see coming. "Nanny Needed" is a must read if you like suspense novels with mind-games and plenty of surprises.
I received a copy of the e-book via NetGalley in exchange for a review.
I was sucked into the story from page 1 and read the book in 1 day! Every time I thought I had it figured out, things would happen and my gasses would change.
This was my first book my Georgia Cross but it will definitely not be my last!
I started this book this morning and finished it this afternoon! If that doesn't tell you how un-put-down-able it was, I don't know what will. It was full of twists and turns, and yes- I'm going to be a little cliché here.... it was a roller coaster ride from start to finish! The upper-west-side New York setting, a rather odd request for a Nanny, and a girl in desperate need to make some money in the Big Apple. You have the recipe for a lot of mysterious and strange events to unfold. This book was eerie and uncomfortable- but in the BEST ways if you love a suspenseful read! It had me all twisted and I was sneak-reading it all morning in between getting ready, laundry, and my daily tasks. Like I said- I couldn't stop reading it and I love that it was a short read but still packed with so much. I'll be thinking about this read for awhile. It's definitely going on my top reads list for my "Spooky Books for Fall". And I can't wait to see what this author comes up with next!
Thank you NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group/ Ballantine / Bantam for my ARC of Nanny Needed.
What a twisty, clever domestic thriller! Sarah and her fiancé, Jonathan, are struggling to make ends meet when she happens upon a flyer advertising for a nanny. Although she has no experience, the position is too good to ignore—a fat, unbelievable salary and a swank luxury penthouse address as the place she’d be working, watching over Patty, a four-year-old girl. Once she applies, she hits it off with Patty’s mother Colette Bird, and soon finds herself hired.
What happens after that is a topsy-turvy rollercoaster of events until the end. Many books promise “unbelievable twists” or “jaw-dropping conclusions” but this one delivers. The ending blew me away and left me rereading passages to soak in the enormity of it all. Some suspension of belief is required, but with kind of book, you sit back, break out the popcorn, and enjoy.
The story plays out like a glossy soap-opera or a Lifetime movie. I liked that the chapters were short, constantly propelling the reader to flip pages. The writing is wonderfully descriptive yet not bogged down in excess prose. I loved the gilded extravagance that surrounds the Bird family and how Colette is portrayed. I want to say so much more about her, but it’s difficult without giving away spoilers.
If you enjoy domestic thrillers, psychological suspense, and flawed characters, Nanny Needed checks all the right boxes and then some. This is a story I could see myself reading over again for sheer enjoyment. It makes a great beach read or poolside escape!
Well this book got interesting pretty quickly! Sarah answers an ad to be a nanny and soon discovers that there is no child and there hasnt been a child in 20 years! Instead she is to pretend she sees this child to keep the mother calm and from going off the deep end.
Very descriptive and interesting.
A super-twisty thriller that will make the reader feel off kilter and anxious until the very end!
This book reinvents the old adage, be careful what you wish for. For Sarah, she wishes for more money and some financial freedom—but at what cost? Her sanity?
A psychological thriller at it’s best! Sarah came to New York from Virginia Beach following the death of her Aunt. There she worked as a Server, met Jonathan, another Server, got engaged and they began life together in a studio apartment, all they could afford. Sarah was also deeply in debt because she put most of her Aunt’s medical expenses on her credit cards. One day she finds a note saying a nanny was needed for a child on the upper west side. Because she needs the money, she calls and an appointment is set up for an interview. She goes there and is stunned by the location, the Doorman and the penthouse apartment itself. Stephen Bird, the older half brother of the child interviews her and hires her on the spot. When she comes to work the next day she meets most of the Bird family and their retainers, Fred and Pauline. After a few days, Collette, the child’s Mother, begins to get closer and closer to Sarah, however Sarah has yet to meet Patty or her father Alex. When she does and what she learns is very disturbing to her however she also learns that she cannot leave because she signed a three month contract with them. I won’t go any further into the plot because of spoilers, but will tell you I read electronically and actually have my Pad plugged in so my battery doesn’t run out and I could learn what was happening next. It is well worth your time. Thanks to Net Galley and Bantam for an ARC for an honest review.
I absolutely adored this twisted thriller! When Sarah sees a flyer for a nanny needed, she immediately responds as she and Jonathan are drowning in debt. And when she realizes the salary is way beyond whatever she could make as a waitress, she jumps at the chance as Collette, the mother is gracious and lovely, and the family is rich beyond belief. She's also amazed by four-year-old Patty's playroom which is magnificent beyond belief. But there's a chilling secret beneath the surface of this idyllic setting and Sarah is shocked when she discovers it. But she's locked in according to the contract she signed. So many dark and twisty turns that will have you gasping at the end! I did not see that coming!
As a former nanny, who has worked for some interesting families, I knew I was going to enjoy this book! Nanny Needed exceeded my high expectations! I love the main characters, the amount of twists along the way, and the ending that was unexpected. Some parts of the book were so creepy & twisted, I found myself cringing. If you enjoy psychological thriller, you will love this book! I cannot wait to read more books from Georgina Cross.
This is the kind of domestic thriller I love best. Sarah Larsen finds an elegantly printed job flyer in the lobby of her apartment building. She's never worked as a nanny before, but she's struggling to pay off her debts and the job will help her to reach her goals more quickly. After visiting the opulent penthouse apartment of the Bird family for an interview, she signs the employment contract and nondisclosure agreement with no hesitation.
Quickly, Sarah begins to realize that the job isn't what she was told it would be and that nondisclosure agreement keeps her from sharing her concerns with her boyfriend. That's one of the things I liked about this book -- Sarah is young and desperate, but she doesn't start out alone in the world and with no support system. This is a fast paced gothic with everything but the creepy old house and I kept turning pages to see what would happen next.
Be careful what you wish for becomes all too real in this book! Sarah is drowning under debt and spends all her time working, avoiding bill collectors and living pay check to pay check. When she finds the advertisement for a nanny she thinks this will be the perfect second job that will release some of the pressure surrounding her life. After accepting the job things quickly reach a new level of unexpected crazy. This is truly a thrill ride of ups and downs and constant surprise. The added touch of creepiness and goosebumps makes this a book you can’t put down. Lots of questions remain at the end. Perhaps there will be a sequel! Thanks Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion!
3.5 stars. This was a quick read with lots of twists and suspicious characters. However, I felt like I didn't know much about Sarah, the main character, and events with the family felt a little repetitive. Thank you for the chance to review!
A young woman nannying for a glamorous Upper West Side family discovers a disturbing secret about the child in her care.
This is unlike any nanny book you've read before. Hear why they're calling it: ORIGINAL CREEPY AND FUN: It's Gossip Girl meets Rebecca in a hip, wildly compulsive take on the gothic suspense novel. Readers will peer behind penthouse walls for a glimpse of how the other side lives, and will be sucked in by the irresistibly creepy atmosphere.
Please join me in reading NANNY NEEDED! I loved writing this book combining the glamorous world of the Upper West Side, New York City, with secrets and torments that are buried deep within a family. Find out what disturbing details the nanny discovers about the girl in her care and how everything she thought about this family changes in an instant. Nanny Needed is a twisted fun read with several shocking reveals at the end. I can't wait for you to explore my book!

A young woman takes a job as a nanny for an impossibly wealthy family, thinking she’s found her entrée into a better life—only to discover instead she’s walked into a world of deception and dark secrets.
Sarah is hired for a dream job as a nanny, to take care of Patty every day from 9-4 in the Bird home on the posh upper west side of NY.
Collette Bird is Patty's mother and Stephen is her stepson, from a previous marriage. The pay is unbelievable and the gig is too good to be true. 🚩🚩🚩I mean instant red flags, right?
To me, everyone in the home seems agoraphobic or they’re that way because of Collette. The resident nut job. They’re all whackados. Collette in a sense makes you feel sorry for her… why you ask? Read it to find out.
All I can say is everyone has tons of secrets and the story def makes you unable to stop turning the pages.
Engaging domestic thriller jam packed with situations where all belief must be suspended. That’s part of the fun though in this Georgia Cross story. You might not want to put it down, be warned!
Wow, this was quite the domestic thriller! It’s many twists and turns kept me fully engaged and guessing what might happen next. There were some very sad & emotional aspects to the plot but nevertheless, I enjoyed this novel.
Ho-oh-oh-oh-ly cow!
This book is a creepfest of the highest order in the best possible way. Sarah, steeped in debt, takes a second job as a nanny without giving nearly enough thought to why she is asked to sign an NDA.
What is up with her boss Collette? Where have all of the other nannies gone?
And WOW...
Way to go, Georgina Cross, I'll be watching for more from you...
Thank you to the publisher for gifting me a copy. I t is my pleasure to write an honest review!
What a creepy domestic thriller. Thanks to Netgalley, Georgina Cross, and Random House for my copy of Nanny Needed. The book was about Sarah, a woman who finds a job posting in her apartment lobby too good to pass up. She interviews to be a nanny in the gorgeous Upper East Side apartment of a rich and secretive family. When she is offered the job, she is so excited that she signs the NDA without a second thought. But there is something going on beneath the surface in the Bird family. Where have the previous nannies gone? And what is the Bird family trying to hide?
Thoughts: This book was incredibly creepy. There were so many little details that were slightly off, that made you feel like there was something sinister in the background. I could never quite put my finger on where this book was going- I only knew something wasn’t right. It wasn’t necessarily realistic, and I did see lots of potential holes in the plot. There were so many things that were almost too convenient and didn’t leave me feeling satisfied.
Sarah was hard to root for as a main character, but I loved the odd and creepy Bird family. I did see a good majority of the twists coming, but there was one I had no idea would happen. It was more of a light popcorn thriller that can be read in a few hours, and it was definitely entertaining. If you love quick domestic thrillers, this one's for you. 3.5 stars!
