This is a great work for young readers. It reminds me of books that I would've seen in my elementary school classroom so many years ago. That isn't necessarily a bad thing. That means that it's educational, valuable for readers. It still offers some novelty in that it has excellent illustrations, great ratio of info-pics, and good resources at the end. Loved it.
Night Creatures: Animals That Swoop, Crawl, and Creep While You Sleep is an enchanting book for the very youngest readers/ listeners. It depicts a young African American child camping out with their mother and listening to the sounds of the night. Rebecca E. Hirsch’s prose is poetic and gentle, while her use of onomatopoeia invites listeners to imitate the nighttime animals. Similarly, Sonia Possentini’s illustrations have soft shades of blue, green, and brown. Night Creatures seems like the perfect bedtime story, with a twist of science.
Night creatures is a stepping-off point for parent/ teacher and child conversations about mysterious animal noises in the night. There is a helpful illustrated glossary of crepuscular (twilight) and nocturnal animals. I would like to have seen the author include a bibliography of other books about these animals to enable readers to learn more. At any rate, this is a wonderful book for pleasure reading, and I highly recommend it for public and elementary school libraries.
What a great bedtime story! I liked that not only are the illustrations beautiful, but they also have the soft, muted, dreamy quality found in so many bedtime books. The words in the book were gentle and had a light quality.
An attractive book, but one that for me left too much to the end-matter. Before then the picture book style, showing us the night-time wildlife of North America, was too busy being subtle, poetic, calm, and not giving us the science. Yes, we got it in the end, but before then it just seemed a little too light and airy. Not unpleasant, of course – just not as balanced between main text and end-matter in educational value as it might have been. Three and a half stars.
This was a wonderful book with stunning illustrations. My 3 and 5 year olds were both engaged by the story and loved the illustrations. We also really enjoyed the pages at the end with more information about each night creature. I would definitely recommend this book!
Night Creatures is such a lovely little book. It has absolutely gorgeous illustrations and nice flowing language. There is even a section in the back with some interesting facts about the night creatures featured in the book. I think the print version of this book would make a stunning children's gift and would be the perfect relaxing bedtime story to read aloud together.
This was a great Informational book for kids! It teaches you about night creatures, and what they do when we’re asleep! The wording was easy to read, and the illustrations were wonderful.
