Dual 1st Person POV
♥️ The 7 Deadly Sins
♥️ Dystopian world
♥️ M/F romance
♥️ Assassins
I looove the 7 deadly sins but I wish there had been more of it. MUCH more! It feels kind of glossed over and a part of the background than the actual story. The only one playing a main part being, you guessed it, Lust.
I absolutely loved Eva and Ari. They are both very strong and likeable characters. The remainder of the characters are mostly just there for necessity and filler.
Favourite character: Killian. He is a mystery.
I adore the dystopian world.
The Commonwealth = obviously, shady
The Brotherhood = also, shady
I don't trust anyone.
The story took an unexpected supernatural turn that I did not see coming.

Sword of the Seven Sins shows great potential right off the bat with an interesting concept. The book opens with a powerful scene and the action is consistent from then on. The writing is overall well-paced but then falls into some bad habits that could be tightened up. From some convenient deus ex machina to a general confusion regarding what the author wanted the book to be, the writing is whipped around from being formal to informal and can't seem to make up its mind between fantasy and sci-fi. Details are presented, and forgotten until the end of the book and when revisited they are only gone over briefly. (One of these details was mentioned at length at the beginning of the book and did not come up again until the 60% mark. This detail almost led me to DNF the book and definitely contributed to the book losing a star in its final rating.)
Lastly, the book ended rather abruptly. It is evident pretty early on the author's intention of having this be a series, but the ending left much to be desired. In my opinion, the last chapter could have either been deleted or a couple of chapters added after it to make the ending more... satisfying instead of infuriating.
Special thanks to Netgalley for providing me with an eARC.
The first book in a new series that shows much promise. Great characters, back story with conflicted emotions and a community of people and events that were equally difficult and supportive. The main characters defintely stand out in their quest to dominate their skills and serve their destiny.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for sending me this to review.
This was a really interesting premise, but I just didn't see a follow through in holding my attention. The romance was interesting and the combatting misogyny, but aside from that, I couldn't really connect with the characters and it didn't really draw me in.
Thank you Netgalley, the publisher, and the author for the opportunity to read this ARC for an honest review. I liked this one, but I found the characters a little hard to connect to. Interesting premise though!
Sword of the Seven Sins was entertaining and easy to read, but I don't know that it's a book that left me thinking or a book I'll continue to think about in the future. It was a good book, but nothing more. Which isn't to say it was bad in any way, just an easy, fun diversion for the day.
Personally, the Sword of the Seven Sins was a pretty good read. It wasn't specifically special, but I liked it nonetheless. It had a nice setting, something that reminded me of the Giver in a sense. I liked the romance, and if you like the student x teacher trope (but with both of them being within a reasonable age of each other) I would recommend this book. I really like how the main character develops her abilities, as well as the fight against misogyny within the book. I'd give this book 3 stars, since it is a perfectly adequate story with perfectly adequate characters. I do feel that some parts of it might have been unnecessary, but I cannot divulge these without giving a spoiler. Nonetheless, I'd recommend this book to people that like a bit of dystopia, and readers of the Giver or Divergent. I still don't really understand the meaning behind the title (why is it a sword?) but that might just be me.
I was given an ARC on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I knew absolutely nothing about this book, and series, before picking it up, so I went in completely blind. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised! I enjoyed this fantasy world, the romance between the main characters, Ava and Ari, and the cliffhanger ending left me craving more. Definitely a good read.
I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book had an amazing plot, but I felt the characters were a bit hard to connect to.
Thank you kindly to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for this review copy.
I have to say at the beginning of this book I was getting ehiplash from the early 2010’s dystopian addiction. Although I felt alot of this book was a little too similar to divergent and the hunger games, I still thoroughly enjoyed it.
I’m a HUGE fan of the ember in the ashes series and it kind of gave me that vibe as well. I really love the characters and their growth throughout the story. The romance is truly so beautiful and ugh had be rushing to turn every page. I will definitely be counting down the days until book two!
Some killers don’t want to be killers. Follow Eva in this semi-disturbing realm of Seven Sins. There’s quite a bit of action and the story kept me mostly engaged throughout. I also received the second book in the series and look forward to reviewing that title as well.
This was definitely an interesting book… But I found that it didn’t really hold my attention. In fact, I don’t think I could tell you what happened in it even now… Which is unfortunate as the concept was very interesting for me!
I enjoyed this read, It reminded me a lot of An Ember in the Ashes series and anyone who likes that series would love this book. I have book two already loaded into my kindle and will be diving right back into the story!
4 stars
Man, I haven't read something like this in so long I am screaming and crying and throwing up because this book had me literally shocked. I AM FLABBERGASTED
this book has literally every trope but with ten times more angst. Knife to the throat? check. angst? check. the rocky enemies to lovers? check. Should I continue? well, I'm going to because there is so much more.
Ari:
This man. I will personally get on my knees for him like what the actual hell. I love how the author made him strong, one of the best soldiers but he was human and like he was soft as well?? He was emotional and not exactly weak but like....you get what I mean. He wasn't the 'oh-I'm-an-assassin-so-i-don't-cry' type. He was just so perfect like every single time he was there I was screaming and crying I don't know what to do with myself anymore
Eva:
I will literally kiss this girl's cheeks my god my bad bitch kween slaying everyone and putting them in their place. I usually don't like main characters (like I've stated literally 10 million times already) and this girl did not disappoint at all.
Plot:
The plot was interesting, though it was cliche. But what can you do, everything is cliche at this point. There was a lot of angst and twists and turns in the plot and just read it, trust me, it's not going to waste your time.
In conclusion, I need book 2 right now. Like right now, right now before I spiral into insanity and start convulsing in my chair. I also need this book in my hands. I need this book physically in my hands as well as the second book. The way the author wrote every word was a masterpiece and I love the flowery writing style while the characters conversed.
"A wolf does not bite a wolf."
Like???? End me now???
Anyways, a great read. So happy right now my heart is literally squeezing (if that is possible) with excitement and I will do anything (literally anything) to get my hands on book 2.
"Sword of the Seven Sins" by Emily Colin
I thankfully received an eARC from #netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
So, this was very different from what I expected - in a very good way. I was going into this thinking I would get the typical light hearted, cheesy YA romance plot.
Boy, was I wrong.
This story explores pretty heavy themes and gets rather dark for Young Adult but is also to young in tone for me to put it into the Adult age range. So personally I would categorize this as New Adult.
What I liked about this:
- the (mostly very sarcastic) dialogue feels natural
- sexual themes later in the book are not overly romanticized
- I really felt the tension in a lot of the key scenes
Some points I disliked:
- In one fight near the end one of the MCs did something supposedly very cunning but for me it just felt over the top and only served to dramatice the scene
- worldbuilding could have been more in-depth
I personally will continue this series to see how the threads that were left loose are going to be tied up. If you are transtitioning from YA to Adult Fantasy or want something light hearted but not too young, I recommend you check this series out.
It’s been a while since I picked up a YA dystopian novel and I thought now was the time to read one, this book didn’t disappoint.
The dystopian world is interesting and has some twists which I haven’t seen in other dystopian novels but also feels very well established as well. This made it easy to connect with the characters and the worldbuilding.
The romance felt kind of forced and I think it was insta-love, which I’m not a huge fan of, however in this book it kinda made sense, that the characters felt so strongly about each other even after such a short time. Still, it bothered me a little.
I picked up Sword of the Seven Sins based on a friend’s recommendation. I thought that Emily Colin did a fabulous job in terms of world building as while reading this book you really get a sense of what life in the Commonwealth of Ashes must be like. In my opinion, this is a great example of dystopian fiction with the Commonwealth being a futuristic police state that is quite frightening to imagine.
In terms of the characters, I found Ari and Eva to both be well developed characters, who were struggling with feelings that they were taught were wrong, but found utterly irresistible.
What I expected to see more of, but didn’t, in this book was romance. In my opinion, the violence really overshadowed the love story between Ari and Eva.
This was a 4 out of 5 star book for me. It is perfect for fans of dystopian fiction and the ending definitely leaves the reader with a lot of questions about where Ari and Eva will go next.
Unfortunately, I didn´t get a chance to read this, due to some technical problems, but I would still love to read it in the future! The synopsis has left me intrigued and it does sound like a really interesting story!
What a start to a new fantasy adventure! A corrupt subjugated society, a strong heroine, genetically modified creatures, and mysterious rebels. No one knows the truth or is telling, and pieces are fed at a good pace. Of course we also have our hero, so threads of adventurous romance that add a nice spice. Looking forward to more!
3/5 Stars - The title is what drew me in and then the blurb, and I was hoping for a fantasy rather than a sci-fi since I'm not a big dystopian fan but this book gave me hardcore The Handmaid's Tale vibes. It felt like a more modern and fantastical version of it. And it started off nice. Good start to YA dystopian series with the pacing. Towards the end though, it seemed a bit unrealistic when the main character finds out the truth about herself. I loved how she stands up for herself and the looking into her mind in her childhood, where she stayed quiet and tried to conform but still held her own opinions. As an adult, I loved her snappiness and survival instincts.
