I felt like reading a fantasy story today, so by Frederic Brremaud definitely fit the bill. The first thing that hits you when digging through the gorgeous pages is just how warm and inviting the artwork is. While this story has a few rough moments, and is not necessarily for children, the artwork is reminiscent of a children’s picture book in many ways. The pages are full of fantastical creatures, perilous situations, and the sort of epic fantasy tone that reminds me of 80s fantasy films such as Legend or perhaps The Dark Crystal.
“A frail young girl flees a roaring forest fire in the middle of the night desperately taking refuge in a cave where she quickly loses consciousness. She wakes up in a strange, tiny village populated by fairy-like creatures. Her hosts seem intrigued by the sparkles of light that seem to surround her. The village chieftain explains that one of their hunters found her passed out in the forest and brought her back here for treatment. He asks who she is, but she remembers nothing except for a wall and flames.”
Truthfully, I wasn’t completely sure I was onboard with the book at first. The story starts with the amnesiac girl being taken in by some forest creatures (elves, goblins, imps? I’m not sure what they are) with the story revolving around the girl trying to go back to where she was found in order to get some clues about her identity. She is met with resistance, and ultimately has to venture out on her own. It is not until she comes across a cunning wolf companion and we learn of the impending peril that is unraveling throughout the forest that I was hooked.
The story takes some turns, and ultimately ends in a way that I didn’t really see coming, so that’s good. At least it wasn’t predictable like other fantasy comics. Even though I read this as an Ebook for evaluation purposes, I’ve seen pictures of the hardcover that this review is ultimately tied to, and it looks awesome. This would be a great book to have around if you are a fantasy fan, or a great gift for a older kid. I just wouldn’t traumatize a toddler with it! There is also a digital version of this on Amazon that is pretty fairly priced, if you aren’t into having physical books around, look into that instead.
The story is self contained, and I don’t see how there could be more unless they do a prequel, so getting this is not a commitment for getting the start of a series or anything. If you’re like me, sometimes you don’t want to wade into a new series very often.
All-in-all, I enjoyed Brindille, and despite my small quibbles with the pacing at the beginning, it was a thoroughly entertaining read. I will be reading another book by Frederic Brremaud pretty soon, so keep an eye out for that – let’s see if he can keep his winning record with me again!
I would first like to thank NetGalley for sending me an EARC in exchange for an honest review.
I didn't think was going to be a graphic novel but it was! I loved the style of the artwork reminds me of watercolors.
At first I didn't understand why there was a wall of fire until the ending. That wall of fire was their life ending and them having to assert their fear of dying.
The entire novel kind of gave me Lord of the Rings vibes in a good way. Like the horse and the Shadowhunters.
The Wolf was a cute protector in my mind. How they helped throughout the entire journey. At the end, when she remembered who she was, it was a sense of clarity. I understood the message as well. The knight learned to deal with their fear and movie onto death.
Cute, short, and pretty. Would totally recommend to a friend and would buy this if I saw it at the store!
The art style of this graphic novel was absolutely gorgeous. The story was very par for the course, though. It followed many tropes that already exist. The story was definitely elevated by the lush artwork, however. The pacing was quick, and I enjoyed the story for what it was. I would have liked a little bit more back story on the villains, but I don’t know if that would have worked in the story in general. Overall, this was solid!
This has the most beautiful illustrations and colors I have encountered, but everything seems to happen very fast. Most of the time I don't know what is happening and how and why it is happening. I felt like I was in a fever dream while reading this one and I don't like that we basically are thrown in without any clue as to what is happening.
The art style alone makes this story a worth while read!!
Pros:
Obviously the art is stunning
The story was fast pace and engaging
The few characters who interacted with Brindile were flushed out characters and unique
The world was vast and intriguing
I felt for the fox and the villagers who left because they were endanger - so that's a great sign of character development
Con:
It felt a little rushed - wish the story was told over a few volumes.
Also still unsure "why" the shadow hunters were chasing the sprint of the warrior. And how'd she get that spirit? What happened to her fairy village?
I still have lots of questions - wish we got more time to answer these questions.
Overall very enjoyable!
Absolutely gorgeous art and a quick, entertaining read. The ending was a little bit confusing though...
It was a beautiful short fantasy tale, I really liked the drawing and the plot twist at the end. The only thing I have not liked was that it was too short, I could have imagined the parts to be longer and more detailed. But for people who liked the Hobbit they will enjoy it.
I LOVED the art (though wolf looked more like a fox to me), but I didn't enjoy the story all that much. I felt that it was hard to follow at times, and that the images didn't show well what was going on here and again. But art for fabulous and for that alone, I give this read 3 stars.
Can we please talk about the beautiful illustrations first, like WOW!
They were epic, and well judge the book by it's cover, cause the graphic novel and its cover BOTH ARE AWESOME!
I love the end especially, when she discovers herself and finally remembers....
It's heart-touching the way she and the wolf bonded, though I do feel sad for the mermaid.......
This book is most certainly a must read, and one of my new favorites!
Right so it’s basically about a young girl who has no memory, lives in a goblin like village, meets a wolf (looks more like a fox tbh), meets a mermaid and fights a monster. This graphic novel was super quick like a lotta things are happening at once that left no time to explain exactly what the young girls goal is. Whilst the sketches of the characters was really drawn well, the plot could have done a better job at explaining what’s going on with the girl and wolf.
Thanks Netgalley and Magnetic Press for allowing me to read this graphic novel!
Brindille is a graphic novel about a girl with no memory thrust into an imaginative forest and imperiled by a dark horde that seems to want her for some nefarious purpose.
While the art is undeniably lovely and dreamlike, I felt the story did not do a good enough job of making me care about the main character's plight, and the episodic structure lacked connective tissue, resulting in a sort of aimless feel to the plot. Characters entered and exited the story without much purpose, and with little to no effect on the main character. The one exception is the main character's loyal companion, Wolf, whose presence added humor and intrigue, but as we later learn, Wolf knows more than he's saying, and this felt frustrating to me as a reader.
On a related note, I felt the ending was telegraphed far in advance, which wouldn't be a problem, except the questions surrounding the "why?" of it all are never answered. Without spoiling the conclusion, I had hoped for more context about what happened preceding the opening of the story that caused the story itself to play out as it does.
There are some interesting themes at play here as it relates to fear and redemption, but in the end, I wanted more explanation than the story seemed to want to provide.
I really liked the artistic style, and design of Brindille. It reminded me a lot of a favorite video game, Child of Light, with its whimsy and magical elements in a world overruled by a dark force.
Brindille has familiar notes from adventure and fantasy stories, weaving a story of a chosen fighter, animal sidekicks/teachers, a variety of species, and a dark army to defeat. Because a lot of it was recognizable, it made for an instantly relatable and likeable story. However, the fast pace of some of the dialogue and scenes feel rushed, and like a condensed version of what it should have been (and I sometimes thought I had missed a page between scenes).
The ending was a shock, and an interesting twist, but I would have loved to see some more time spent on Twigs growth, and discovering her memories before we got there. The art and character design was wonderful, and the overall story compelling, but I would inform readers to be aware of this story's pacing.
Thank you NetGalley for sharing this novel with me in exchange for an honest review.
This story about finding yourself and learning, overcoming is so beautifully presented. I loved the art, style and flow of it. Simply lovely! Twig is trying to find the truth of who she is, all the while surrounded by a beautiful magical world and creatures. It almost reads like a fable, stunning! Thoroughly enjoyed it!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the chance to read this one early!
I loved the drawings, I think the artist has done an excellent job. I also liked the message of the story - facing your fears will always work to your advantage, and no matter how many times you fail and get too scared to carry on, you can try again and again, until you master your fear. Great work!
Brindille is an absolutely gorgeous book the artwork alone makes it a 4 star read, Luckily, however, the story is just as intriguing. The story definitely gives the warm magic of classic fairytales like Cinderella and again the artwork is just divine. The only downside that brings this down to a four instead of a five is the slightly questionable ending. However, apart from that 10/10.
If you're looking for self discovery story in the fairy tale setting, then Brindille is a perfect match!
The story begin with a girl that didn't have any clue about herself after a big fire in the forest. Later, she discovered about herself little by little, from every challenges she is facing, accompanied by wolf, with a little twist at the ending for who she really is! Although the ending still leaving me questions about what and why this girl's world are created, it can't change the fact this story is really adventurous!
I really loved the girl as main characters, she overcome her fears and choose not to run away from her fate. I also liking the wolf character who protect the girl and have relax, funny, but serious personality. Anyways, the illustration is so breathtaking! The arts really depicts the atmosphere of the story, I really appreciate it ❤️

This was deffinetly the convination of Alice adventures in wonderland AND Lord of the rings.
The ambience Is enchanting, just like you would imagine a fairy tale, but this world has a little drak twist that Is not visible ok the draws, but whithin the characters.
And I must say, ( spoiler free) I did not expect that ending.
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this.
I absolutely loved the artwork in this story, it's gorgeous!
And the story was very thrilling, I kept wondering what was going to happen next!
Would definitely recommend it.
I gave this book a 3.5 stars. The only reason I did not give it a higher rating is because I wish that the ending gave a little more explanation.
The story follows a young girl who can't remember who she is or where she came from. We follow her throughout her journey as she faces perils and meets new friends along the way while trying to learn more about her past.
I absolutely loved the artwork. The art style was very similar to traditional Disney films such as, the Fox and the Hound. It was beautiful and the scenery reminded me of fairies.
This story is reminiscent to Lord of the Rings. The chosen one who learns more about the life and themselves while trying to save the world. The main character is strong and determined. She never lets her setbacks defeat her but instead pushes herself to move forward and improve. I think she is an inspiring character for young readers who may feel lost or afraid to overcome their fears when things get overwhelming.
I received this ebook from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This graphic novel was beautifully illustrated and very interesting! I felt like I didn't fully follow the story though. It felt like the ending felt a bit abrupt. I did still enjoy this though. It still had a whimsical feeling to it that kept me interested the whole time. The artwork really showcased the story wonderfully.
