Eva is a journalist writing an article about women who are mysteriously being kidnapped, tortured and released ten days later, when she falls victim to the same fate. Confused and afraid she has to figure out who the kidnapper is and how to escape them as they start to spiral out of control. I really enjoyed this book and found it easy to read and hard to guess! I enjoyed the fact that each chapter focuses on a different character so that you are able to get a well-rounded perspective of the storyline and lots of information.
The book takes upon a heavy subject which I appreciate, but the handling of it I felt is inadequate. The beginning is suspenseful and fast but in the middle it slagged and became aimless. The actual mental state of the abductor and her unreasonable thinking only muddies the water. I requested this book after reading the reviews of my good reads friends. But it didn’t work for me. Sorry
a journalist, missing women returning after 10 days? count me in!!
this is a story that got me hooked from the start, due to the short chapters it fit perfectly in my (non existant) reading time. the story unfolds from two point of views, one of Eve and one of Alex.
admittedly some parts are a bit disturbing but well, what would you expact of a psychological thriller??
thanks a lot #NetGalley #Bookourtue and #Mell Sherratt for this pleasant read
Enjoyable book. I found I was able to guess at some of the plot twists coming but still enough to keep me wanting to read until the end, The one thing that did grate a bit was the way the fact that the main character was a journalist with a consience kept constantly being refered to. Overall a good read and I'd recommend it,
Mel Sherratt managed to create a chilling psychological thriller that also managed to tug on your heartstrings from page one. The epilogue is expertly written and will give you just enough detail to send your mind reeling with questions and possibilities. When you get to the end of the first few pages of a story and you think, "what the heck just happened?"...you know you are in for a rollercoaster ride! I absolutely love the way the story is organized surrounding the capture of Eva, the 5th woman held captive in Alex's basement. Reading the story from alternating perspectives will give readers the chance to learn each character as they themselves tell their stories. The chapters are short and intense making this a fast paced thriller that will have your heart racing until the very end. Even though I was able to predict a few of the many twists, it didn't take away from the excitement of the story. As a matter of fact, after a predicted twist was revealed, I was screamed, "I knew it!!" and was determined to see if I was on the right track to predicting the others. Not a chance! Sheratt did a fantastic job at creating a chilling, heart-pounding thriller that will surely keep you up at night! I will surely be recommending this one to everyone this summer! Another great book by Mel. I have read all of her books and they are all as good as each other. I was gripped from the start with this one and couldn't put it down. I loved the short chapters and the story told from the two perspectives. Roll on the next book. I highly recommend this book and author.
Another brilliant read from this author, gripping all the way which kept me on the edge of my seat from the beginning until the very last page with my heart in my mouth.
I just love these addictive books and the short chapters from Eva and Alex were told so brilliantly even though parts of it were not pleasant to read.
I can definitely recommend this book and thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for allowing me to read this five+ star book.
This was another brilliant book from this author. It really kept me on the edge of my seat and was a brilliant read which I couldn’t put down. It was a disturbing read and parts of it were heart wrenching to read but was totally compulsive reading and read it in almost one sitting. It would make a brilliant tv drama. The plot was very clever and the characters came to life on the page. If you like domestic psychological thrillers then you will enjoy this
Someone has taken four women from the streets there are no clues to who has taken them or why.
After 10 days of being held they are released but one of them hasn't been.
Eva is a journalist covering the story but now she's also been taken waking up in a cellar each victim described.
Eva is scared but she knows after 10 days she'll be released won't she? What follows is a totally gripping story which I could'nt stop reading,I loved the characters yes even the bad one.
A brilliant book by a brilliant writer I would highly recommend.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC.
Four women have been abducted but only three released on day ten. None of them know who took them, why they were taken and where they were held. Eva is a reporter who has spoken to all of them. When she is also taken, she has to do what she can to survive the ordeal.
This is a great book with chapters from Eva's perspective and also Alex, the abductor. I really enjoyed it
Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review. My opinions are my own
This is a suspenseful thriller about Eva, a journalist who wrote about the stories of a few women that had recently been kidnapped, and now finds herself to be the latest victim.
The story is told through about 70 short chapters, often with a change in perspective or a change in time as a new chapter starts. We switch between the perspective of the protagonist Eva, and her unknown abductor, and also hop around to different times, as pieces of the story come together.
I can't discuss any of the plot without spoiling the story, so I'll just say that there were twists, and some unexpected revelations. The story was engaging enough to keep me reading, and the short chapters helped move the story along at a nice pace.
Overall I wouldn't say that it was mind-blowing, or as impressive as some other psychological thrillers that I've read; but it was exciting enough to keep my interest, and it actually illuminates some real world issues that are important to be aware of. So I'd recommend it if you are a fan of this genre.
First, thank you to the publishers at Bookouture and Netgalley for this e-ARC of Invisible Victim.
Invisible Victim is a fast paced thriller that will have you sitting on the edge of your seat! Eva, a journalist for Stoke News, has been retelling the stories of several women who have been kidnapped and returned after 10 days for the past several months. Then Eva wakes up in a cellar eerily similar to the one each woman spoke of, and she realizes that she’s been kidnapped by the same unknown person. After the fourth victim failed to come home after 10 days, Eva wonders, will she get out alive, or not? And if so, what will she have to do in return?
Full of secrets and plenty of twists and turns, I found this book to be very intense, as well as a good delve into the way the foster care system works and handles child abuse cases. The book is told from several viewpoints, mainly Eva and her kidnapper, with a few other voices thrown in. The chapters flip through the past and the present so that you can more fully understand why the kidnapper is doing what they are doing. It may not be for everyone, so I’ll include some trigger warnings below. I don’t want to give away too many spoilers, but the title of the book is very fitting.
I empathized with Eva, and even the kidnapper at times, but in the end, they are an adult who knows right from wrong and still chose poorly. Their past may haunt them, but it didn’t have to, and instead of reconciliation, they chose violence.

I've read all of Mel's books except the Estate series and she's a damn good author but this is a truly brilliant read! While I enjoy her police procedurals her psychological thrillers are in a league of their own!
An absolute must read but don't expect to get much sleep before turning the last page!!
Wow! Seriously this is a really twisted and dark thriller about invisible victims from abusive homes and how their lives can be shaped in very different ways. I can’t really say too much about this book as it will spoil the whole thing but let’s say if you love a really dark thriller with lots of twists and turns then this is the book for you.
This story was thrilling and unusual to my normal tastes but saying that I'm glad I was wrong. It had my mind hooked. Couldn't put it down. Will recommend this to others if they fancy a book that's different from there normal taste.
Another brilliant book from Mel Sherratt!
Mel always tells a good story although I did find this a bit slow to get moving but it soon picked up and then you will be hooked.
An enjoyable read.
I would recommend to my friends looking forward to reading more
"We live in a society where the weak and the damaged go unmonitored. Usually the only time anyone hears about someone being ill-treated is when something goes wrong. So many children are invisible to the system."
-Mel Sherratt, Invisible Victim
This is a psychological thriller about a serial abductor, who holds women in a cellar for 10 days, keeping them devoid of any conversation and provisioning limited food & water. Although the first 3 victims were returned after 10 days of torture, the location of the 4th victim remains unknown. Eva Farmer, a journalist at Stoke News, is the 5th victim of the abductor. Knowing that the 4th victim was not released on day 10 as expected creates a lot of anticipation about what the future holds for Eva.
There are countless victims of domestic & child abuse, whose stories remain unload, whose scars remain unhealed, either because no one ever learns of their plight or because people choose to turn a blind eye to their trauma. It seems to me that the book is titled after such invisible victims, of which there are a lot in the story.
Trauma can impact different people in different ways. It can either make you or break you. Dealing with trauma is like walking on the edge of a mountain, trying get back from the edge, but being enticed by the peace offered by the valley. The story will show you both sides of this coin.
This a dark psychological thriller, which was fun, but it wasn't exactly a page turner for one very important reason. The book did not have a lot of twists, so there are few moments of surprise. This was disappointing, because after I read the synopsis, I had high hopes. But the book simply lacked the WOW factor.
This is the first Mel Sherratt book I have read and although, it was not exactly a spell bounding page-turner, I wouldn't mind returning to her work in the future.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing me with a complimentary electronic copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

This was a dark and enthralling book, with quite an unusual storyline, which keeps the reader engrossed.
I was waiting with baited breath until the very end to discover what the outcome would be. As with previous books by Mel Sherratt this did not disappoint.
Eva is a journalist and has been covering the story of women who have been abducted but returned after 10 days, although one woman is still missing. When Eva is abducted, she soon realises from information the other women told her, that she has been taken by the same person.
In pain and scared, can Eva outwit her kidnapper? Will she be able to cope for the 10 days but more importantly, will she be released?
Revenge is a dish best served cold!
My goodness, what a story! This one had me gripped within minutes, an excellent psychological thriller. This story put me through a range of emotions and I’m not ashamed to admit that I shed a few tears. Great characters and a well written and believable story.
My thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for a copy of the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I’m a big Mel Sherratt fan. I really enjoyed her DS Grace Allendale series so I was super excited to see this newest on NetGalley. The premise sounded great - a real psychological thriller. Sad to say ... I didn’t love it. I found parts of it dragged on. I didn’t really connect with any of the characters. There was something missing. It just didn’t have that WOW factor.
Would I recommend this one? Maybe. I seem to be in the minority right now of other reviewers and their opinions. I give this a solid three star but could not go any higher. I’ve read better that are similar in story plot.
Thank you #netgalley and #bookouture for the eARC. I will keep an eye out for the next Mel Sherratt book.
