Carried to the Grave and Other Stories is a collection of five short stories and one novella from her Food Lovers mystery series set in Jewel Bay, Montana. In the titular short story, Carried to the Grave,, a long-hidden family secret is revealed after the funeral of Erin Murphy's aunt. In Pot Luck, Jewel Bay’s community fall food festival is tainted when the perennial award-winning elk medallion dish is poisoned and Erin has to find out why. Erin is surprised in The Christmas Stranger when a mysterious man's gives her a generous gift after she helps him make some photocopies. Erin and her new husband Adam Zimmerman are enjoying their honeymoon getaway at a secluded Mexican beach town in A Death in Yelapa. But when the body of a woman is found eaten by crocodiles, Erin determines the truth and the victim's identity thanks to an aversion to cilantro and a distinctive dress. The Jewel Bay playhouse opens for the season but the stage manager is snuffed out during the performance in Put on a Dying Face.. And in the novella An Unholy Death, it's 1910 when Erin's great grandparents and newlyweds Paddy and Kate Murphy open up the Mercantile in Jewel Bay. When the local preacher is killed, his orphaned daughter Grace is befriended by Kate and they form a friendship and work to find his killer.
This was a delightful set of stories that allowed us to explore the Jewel Bay area and its quirky cast of characters, both past and present.

Cozy mystery novellas and short stories are some of my guilty pleasures. I find these snack-sized mysteries fun and relaxing. I always enjoy finding talented authors that are new to me, so I was delighted to read, Carried to the Grave and Other Stories. The stories center around Erin Murphy and The Merc, a store that has been in her family for generations. Erin also happens to be an amateur detective with a mind that relentlessly works to solve puzzling circumstances. These stories have it all from suspense to humor to heart-warming moments.
This has four stories in one book. Each one short and to the point. Was a quick read and had great characters with amazing background. It also had new places and people that made you want to finish the book quickly. I would highly recommend it for when you just want a quick read.
In her Food Lovers’ Village Mysteries, Agatha Award-winning author Leslie Budewitz introduces us to Jewel Bay, a tight-knit Montana community that thrives on tourism and farm-to-table fare. Featuring Erin Murphy, beloved proprietor of the Merc—a century-old general store converted into a local foods market—each book brings us closer to the folks who call Jewel Bay home, and the cunning culprits in their midst.
In this delicious new collection of five short stories and one novella, she takes us further into the heart of Jewel Bay—from the playhouse to the Merc, from funerals to food festivals—with equal parts humor, suspense, and compassion, and no shortage of murder to spice up the menu .

This is a nice collection of short stories featuring Erin Murphy and Mercantile in Jewel Bay. I have been reading this series from the beginning and enjoy these characters. The only thing about short stories is that it often leaves me wanting more but if you want a quick intro into this series this is good for that.
Carried To the Grave and Other Stories by Leslie Budewitz is an advance reader copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This is a collection of five short stories and a novella that take place in a Montana community. It was fun to read about all of the characters who live in Jewel Bay, MT. There were even some tips on cooking in the book. Small towns are fun, but can be complicated.
Carried to the Grave and Other Stories, a Food Lovers’ Village mysteries by Leslie Budewitz takes place in Jewel Bay, Montana, a place known for its festivals and its food.
The book is a series of short stories and one novella, all revolving around the Merc, a generations old grocery, now more of a tourist shop, still run by Erin Murphy, a descendant and amateur investigator. She just has a knack for it. I each of these stories there is a mystery, not all murders, in which Erin draws on her know, edge of the community.
Food Lovers’ Mysteries is a terrific cozy mystery series and these stories kind of round out the book-length mysteries by focusing on individuals that normally inhabit the background. People in small towns have lives much more integrated than in cities, which makes it inbred and interesting. This was a enjoyable read. I recommend it.
I was invited to read a free e-ARC of Carried to the Grave and Other Stories but Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #netgalley #carriedtothegraveandotherstories
This book was very interesting. The story lines in each story were tied together with the main characters, Erin and Adam. The other characters added to the mystery of the stories. The whole book was very entertaining and I enjoyed it very much.
Thank you NetGalley and Beyondthepage Publishing for this ARC.
A delightful way to stay connected to some favorite characters in a charming series. Quick cozy mysteries to solve. New people to meet, new places to go. Well done and conceived addition to the series. Thanks to the publisher for providing a copy via NetGalley.
Several independent mysteries tied together by a common protagonist woven throughout, this book is a pleasant way to while away an afternoon or evening.
A good collection of stories which are based on characters from the Food Lovers Village mysteries. However, these stories stand on their own. My favorite was the historical mystery set in the early 1900s when Jewel Bay was first being settled.
This is a compilation of 4 short stories and a novella. I liked that it was bundled. For me, the bundle makes it seem like a novella broken into segments. The common theme is Jewel Bay, Montana. There is good background information for the series along with a heartwarming Christmas story.
I enjoyed these stories. It’s a great introduction to the series which I have moved the series higher on my to be read list. These stories can be read without having read books 1 through 5. I have read number five and wanted to start the series from the beginning but life gets in the way. I feel this set of short stories has given me more motivation to start from the beginning.
I was given an advanced e-copy by Netgallery. I am not required to leave a positive review.
I am not usually a fan of short stories, but I thoroughly enjoyed the stories in this book, #6 of the Food Lovers’ Village series. I particularly liked the story of how “the Merc” was established. Every time I read one of the books, I feel like I’ve returned to visit my friends in Jewel Bay, Montana. The scenery is so well described that you can visualize it without hesitation, and would like to visit. I highly recommend this series to anyone who likes cozy mysteries. I received an arc of this book from NetGalley and the publisher. All opinions expressed are my own.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This is a great book of short stories, set in Jewel Bay, Montana and/or features the Mercantile store and the village characters recognizable from the Leslie Budewitz’ longer books. I really like book, and highly recommended it. I especially loved the story “The Christmas Stranger”.
Slices Of Life....
Part of The Food Lovers’ Village Mystery series the reader takes a trip to Jewel Bay with this collection of short stories and a novella. Light hearted, often humorous, often murderous and suspenseful slices of life. Enjoyable, escapist reading.
A lovely collection of stories featuring Erin Murphy of the Merc. Just the perfect to introduce readers to Erin and Jewel Bay. Easy to read, nice when you just need to switch your mind to something else for a bit.
Thank you to NetGalley and Beyond the Page Publishing for an early read in exchange for my opinion.
First let me say that the writing of Leslie Budewitz is evocative and lovely. That being said I was confused by this book, most particularly the first story. I felt that it was none of my business, and that there was no real conclusion. The interim stories were nice, but only okay for me. This is the first I have read from this author and with no background I felt lost. The final story, that seemed to be about an ancestor, was suspenseful and heartwarming, but again I felt as if I had missed a conclusion. How did Paddy's family turn evolve into the modern A Food Lover's Village Mystery series?
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
I received an advance copy of, Carried to the Grave and Other Stories, by Leslie Budewitz. This is a good collection of stories, I liked the characters and the setting.

Loved the collection of short stories about the characters that we know from the Food Village series by Leslie Budewitz.

Well written and likable characters.
