This is book 3 in the Children of the Mist series. In this story we have Rory the best tracker in the clan is tasked with finding Juliana. She was kidnapped. The story was well done and I enjoyed it a great deal. I cannot wait for more in the series.
I was swept away from chapter one. Fast pace novel that reads like a delicious burning romance. I can’t say enough great things about this novel.
This book was read thanks to NetGalley
This is a highland romance, so ofc I had to read it since thanks to Outlander and James Alexander Malcom MacKenzie Fraser, I love highlands romances, and this honestly...
didn't disappoint me, it does a great job setting the work, you get to see, the way the character start developing and how their first, trust, slowly gets to be love story...
I love the way that the characters interact and how slowly their (specially her) guards fall off and their love blossom,
My issue is that I was so into the story that it felt like I missed some chapters the moment when we made it to the end.
TW: There is some mention to rape, and trauma due a rape.
This is a enemy to friends road trip story. Basically Rory and Juliana love to annoy each other, when he rescues her from the clan's enemy, they slowly develop feelings for each other. Overall I enjoyed this book, it's a slow burn romance. Juliana's sharp tongue is sharp for a very good reason which the author gives warning about and handles very well. Although I have not read the book prior, from the beginning, I felt that Rory always kinda liked Juliana but could not help than to goad her until he found out why she was the way she is.
The writing and imagery is superb in this novel, the suspense drives this and is well played, the entire novel is a bit predictable but it doesn't detract. I loved the banter between Rory and Juliana!
The only objection, as so many others have noted, is the abrupt ending. It needed more although it is quite lengthy already.
I received an advanced copy in exchange for a review
When I started to read this book, I was very intrigued! I could already tell even from the start, the romance involved was a enemies-become-lovers trope which is super fun! I really started to get into this book, but unfortunately due to the language used by Neal and many other characters, I found this too much of a barrier to be able to finish this book.
I loved this story, two individuals that agree to disagree about everything. Juliana has been kidnapped by a rival clan. Rory the best tracker and her sister's brother in law has been sent to rescue her much to her surprise. Lying that they are handfest. Having to go the long way around to avoid confrontation, they make the trek home. Will the make it safe and admit to the feelings that are growing between them. I love the characters in this book. The arguing and butting head, made for a very entertaining read.
This was a pretty good read by one of my favorite authors. Ms Breeding writes highlanders' like no body's business. I sure do like a man in his kilt, oh so sexy and very virile. I liked the characters who had thoughts and feelings of their own. The book is the second in the series but can be read as a stand alone. Lots of action, adventure and love.
I just loved feisty Juliana Caldwell who had opinions that irked Rory MacGregor to no end. If she said something that was different, he would call her out. He thinks the lass gets on his bad side.
When Juliana goes missing from home, he is asked to go and find her. Even though she is her brothers' sister by marriage, he really doesn't want to go. But he finally relents and goes because being an expert tracker is his specialty.
When she is found by Rory at the enemy Cameron's home, he claims that Juliana is hand fasted to him, but they are found out and flee. There is a angry Cameron following because he wants the woman himself and won't give up
There is a blizzard to contend with, meddling people and an almost attack one the long road to home. But there is a spark that binds these two together, and it's called love.
I appreciate Net Galley for this ARC title in which I gave an honest review.
I’ve been anxiously awaiting this book in the continuing Children of the Mist series. I loved the first one and just couldn’t wait to see what the next brother’s story was going to be. I was not disappointed. Juliana and Rory make the cutest couple.
Juliana ends up kidnapped by a fellow clan after her sister’s wedding and Rory is asked by the rest of the family to rescue her. At first he believes she’s just a willful girl who wandered into a situation she wasn’t ready for. When he catches them, he discovers it’s worse than he thought and he’s beside himself to find a way to save her. He finally decides Handfasting is the best way to save her even though she has no idea what it really means for the two of them. She turns out to be much stronger than Rory believed her to be and he quickly finds himself besotted with her and wishing knew and wanted the handfasting to continue.
Lucky for Rory, Ms Breeding knows how to give us a romance and eventually Juliana realizes she wants a real handfasting with Rory. As unconventional as the courting is, she decides Rory is the hero she was looking for to save her from her previous sexual assault nightmares. Rory works with kid gloves to uncover Juliana’s fears and bring her around to true romance and passion. When they arrive back home finally to tell their family, some are shocked and some not so much. It seems the bantering they’ve exchanged since first meeting has been noticed by the other brothers and sisters and they are happy for them.
I’m anxious to see what the next novel in the series brings us. Ms Breeding handles the Sexual Assault trauma in a very genuine-real way that isn’t over the top or diminishing of something no one should ever have to deal with. She also shows us that people can recover from it if treated with care and respect for their ordeal and the results of it. Kudos to her for dealing with this issue. I’m giving this a 4 of 5.
This was an exciting book that starts off with an abduction by a crazy and cruel man, and a rescue by a chivalrous hero. They are forced to flee in snowy conditions and deal with obstacle after obstacle, all while being handfast which he understands but she doesn't. Once she does, and after all they survive, the truth of the matter is they belong together for longer than that anyway. What a great story! And omg Morag and Neal we something else. #netgalley #highlandhero
This story centers around Juliana & Rory MacGregor. These two had enjoyed verbally sparring since meeting but now their story takes on a new layer. When Juliana finds herself kidnapped by a Cameron who meant to make her his bride, Rory is sent to track them and save Juliana. Some quick thinking has Rory proclaiming he is hand fasted with Juliana and demanding she be returned to him. Nothing ever goes easy for a MacGregor though so it’s no surprise these two end up on the run and having to make a long round about way back to Strae Castle. There seem to be many fae playing against their return as one thing after another occurs.
I enjoyed the verbal sparring these two got up to as it added some comic moments. However, I really wished these two would have an actual conversation, a lot of misunderstandings could have been avoided. Like book one of this series not a lot of passion in this book - one on page encounter after the 90% mark, and two kisses before that, so little heat.
Overall I was happy with the ending and enjoyed the story.

****Check the warning there is a lot of discussion of misusing women, taking women by force, and Juliana is a victim of rape prior to the storyline****
Scottish historical romances are my guilty pleasure and the new book in the Children of the Mist didn’t disappoint.
It follows the feisty Sassenach Julianna and our Scottish hero Rory who just rescued her after being abducted during her sister’s wedding. While they journey through the highland, they encounter all kinds of obstacles and dangers that keeps the stories intriguing and fast paced.
I loved our main heroine who despite her trauma (TW for rape) slowly learn to trust our hero. She is super feisty and doesn’t back away from verbal sparring and arguing with Rory, who truly just enjoys irritating her at every opportunity. Their banting was very entertaining.
Rory is your typical strong and self confident highlander, he was kind and very respectful to Juliana but I did wish there had been more to him. He literally spends most of this time trying to control his lust, which felt a little repetitive.
Their romance is suuuuper slow burn, probably slower than I prefer, and I would have loved to see a little more flirtation throughout the book.
Overall I really enjoyed the adventure part of the story, and it was a very enjoyable read.
Julianna and Rory’s chemistry flew off the page!
This was a thoroughly enjoyable romp through the highlands. I thought the whole cast of characters were delightful and I loved reading about their interactions.
This is an excellent choice for Dana’s of highland romance, I would recommend it to fans of Lynsay Sands or Michelle Sinclair.
Thank you to the publisher and to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily read and reviewed honestly. All opinions are my own.
You know a book is good when you read it in one sitting. I had been in a massive reading slump and this pulled me out. It was a fast paced romance with a bit of danger and intrigue.
I really liked that the author included a content warning at the beginning of the book for “discussions of rape” and “scenes depicting graphic violence.” Although personally I think graphic is a strong word in this case, I thought the violence was pretty mild and nothing was described in great detail.
I gave this book 4 stars because while it was entertaining and I read it in once sitting, the romance took a while to get to and I wish we would’ve seen more flirting between the characters but it was still and enjoyable romance. My biggest criticism is that the outside conflict wasn’t really resolved until the epilogue with just a quick narration of what had happened and I don’t think it made a lot of sense based on what we saw of those characters.
Overall it was a good read and I do recommend it!
TW: rape
While I enjoyed this story, the miscommunication/lack of communication trope was strong in this. Juliana is very wary of men due to being raped in her past, and this plays a huge part in how she interacts with Rory. I wish this had been discussed between the two of them earlier in the book so that we could have seen an attraction/friendship build sooner. I would have liked to have seen the enemies to lovers play out in the last 50% of the book as apposed to the last 20%. But, this just may be my personal preference. The banter/bickering is fun and the plot is good. An enjoyable read.
The heroine is so aggravating and just plain dumb, I don't know how she manages to be both at the same time. The main characters do not have any chemistry at all and it's such a shame since the first book is so good as from what I remember. The journey/adventure/road trip thing that happened here is not really my jam and because the main characters are bland and don't have any chemistry at all, it feels like everyone is moving but nothing important is really happening.

I have not read many Highlander romances before, although I am aware that they are a BIG DEAL in the historical romance genre. I figured checking out Cynthia Breeding's Highland Hero would help me gauge where I currently stand with the genre.
There are certainly aspects that I enjoyed about this book. I am a sucker for a brooding hero and this book had that in spades. The tension was built well and the stakes were one of the highest that I have seen in a romance book. The one thing that I didn't realize going into this was just how dark a Highlander romance could get. Kidnapping and discussions of sexual assault run rampant throughout Highland Hero. While Breeding did kindly provide a content warning, it was far more central to the book than I anticipated. Although it did make me squirm a bit, I did enjoy the book overall and I will certainly be dipping my toes further into the Highlander romance subgenre in the future!
Thank you to NetGalley and Entangled: Amara for this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review!

If Juliana Caldwell said the sky was blue, Rory MacGregor would tell her it was grey with a storm due any minute. No man gets under her skin more than the arrogantly handsome Scot. However they are stuck in the same Scottish castle for his brother Ian's & her sister Emily's wedding (Highland Renegade). Then she is abducted by Neal Cameron. Rory is the best tracker the MacGregors have, so he’s ordered to find Juliana. The only way Rory can think of rescuing Juliana is to declare them handfasted. When their escape goes horribly awry, Juliana and Rory are forced to take the long way home in the middle of December with a storm brewing.
This is the second book in the series & is easily read on its own. I loved the feisty Juliana & the stoic Rory they butted heads at every turn & their verbal bantering was highly entertaining. I loved their eventful journey home with snow storms, a rejected suitor, a vengeful young women & a secret Juliana’s carried for a couple of years. I also loved how the pair gradually first became friends then fell in love. Rory certainly was a Highland Hero for the way he handled Juliana's revelation. A well written page turner, which I was totally engrossed in & there was a delightful teaser for the next book
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Juliana and Rory can not stop arguing with each other. It doesn't matter what they are talking about, whether the sky is blue and the grass is green can spark an argument. It doesn't help that they will be spending lots of time at the same place as her sister and his brother are getting married.
When Juliana gets kidnapped after the wedding by this awful man named Neil Campbell (he wants to marry her even if she doesn't agree) Rory as the best tracker around is sent after her.. When he catches up to her his only idea is to claim that they are actually hand-fasted.. So there is no way that she could marry Neil.. Of course Juliana has no idea that when you say your hand-fasted in front of witnesses then you are actually married.
Now on the run from Neill and his friends they take the looong way home, and in the process argue ALOT. There arguments made me laugh out loud. Little did they realize that between the running and the fighting they are developing actual Feelings for each other.. But Juliana has had something happen to her in the past that makes her want to stay away from men forever.. Even if she feels safe with Rory and trusts him. Can they find their happily ever after? I mean we know they will as its a romance, but how they will come together is the real question..
I really enjoyed this story and really want to read the first one. Juliana and Rorys romance was sweet and spicy. and I can't wait to read more books in this series and by this author.
Warning this one is a SLOWBURN and it's really good. This book moves at a pretty quick pace. Before I knew it I had read more pages than I had intended to. Because as we see Rory and Juliana start to develop feelings for each other, we also get lots of adventure as they try to make their way back to Strae Castle.
On the evening of her sister's marriage to the laird of Clan MacGregor, Juliana Caldwell is abducted by a rival clan. Rory MacGregor, the clan's best tracker, is sent to find her and bring her back.
When catches up to her and her captures, he tells them they are handfasted. Knowing they'll have no choice but to hand her over. He only hopes that she doesn't contradict him in her usual manner so that they can leave without any problems.
Chaos erupts just as they leave the gates and now they are being pursued by a man who won't take no for an answer.
Thanks so much to Entangled, the author and Netgalley for this ARC to review.
I really enjoyed this book, this is the first book from Cynthia Breeding I have read and I found her writing to be accessible, well paced and engaging. Cynthia peppers this novel with tropes that I absolutely delight in- English Heroine and Scottish Hero, forced proximity, handfasting, mutual care-taking scenes, and road-trip. I think she did a lovely job interweaving these elements to create a nice plot to drive the hero and heroine on their journey of discovering love.
Juliana, the heroine, is bold and headstrong, she has had some past trauma (trigger warnings are stated before the start of the novel) that motivates her thoughts on her future as well as they way she stands up for herself. The hero-Rory, is smart and strong, and as they begin their journey together he is slowly realizing new feelings that are arising within him in regards to Juliana. In the first book in these series there appears to be some foundation work around Juliana and Rory's relationship which early on leans towards irritation and also contradicting the other. They both know how to get on each others nerves and this creates a nice banter between them early on. Slowly they begin to look past the surface to discover hidden feelings and respect. There are some really charming scenes in which Rory shows Juliana how to use a knife to defend herself, and it was really nice to see Juliana find her agency around how she could take control of a situation and be her own hero.
This novel is a very slow burn. Juliana's past makes her extremely cautious around men and she has to learn to trust Rory entirely before she can fully open up to him and explore a more physical side to their relationship. I do like that Juliana and Rory are able to discuss her past and that because he is aware of her past he can be a much more considerate and gentle lover. While I do find their relationship to be sweet and have the potential to grow deeper, I do feel like it was lacking something that makes me truly believe in the deepness of their love. I feel like their romantic feelings where still in the foundation building stage when this novel was coming to its conclusion.
Overall, this novel was a really enjoyable read. Cynthia Breeding created a plot that was entertaining with some nice action. I would recommend if you like a nice highlander romance, that is low on the angst and has two people learning that they can work stronger together while still having fun contradicting each other.
