Thankyou NetGalley , Victory Editing Co-Op and the author, Sarah A Denzil, for the opportunity to read an advanced readers copy of The Housemaid in exchange for an honest and unbiased opinion.
Such a good read.
The premise of the storyline sounded so promising, and was delivered in spades.
Plenty of twists and turns get you hooked. The characters were well drawn and compelling.
Well worth a read.

I’ve loved other books by this author and this one did not disappoint. Told from the perspective of a maid who goes to work in a large stately yorkshire home the lives of the staff and the family who own the home intertwined. The characters are developed well from the heir to the estate down to the chief of staff- everyone with their own secrets.

This book is full of intrigue and suspense. It captured my attention from the beginning and held it throughout. I did not want to put it down.
The story takes place at a centuries old manor that is humongous and has secret passageways and most the people involved are quite creepy. There is no denying the underlying sinister tone to the book, which gives the book a somewhat "spooky" feel to it.
I was only able to figure out part of the "mystery"; which is good since I am usually able to pick out the "who done it" in most books. This definitely made it more enjoyable to read.
I loved this book! 5/5 stars. Would absolutely recommend it!

What is there to not love about The Housemaid. I can definitely say 5 stars without even reviewing. The connection between past and present and the disturbed nature of the house and family sets this up to be a thrilling ride. It was beyond my expectations and more. Sometimes a brilliant book can be let down at the end but this was not the case, the subject was handled beautifully to the end, with empathy and an ending deserving of the characters. Well done and highly recommend.

Dark Secrets….
A beautiful stately home. The Howards - a perfect family. The perfect job. Is it all too good to be true? All an illusion? The reality is, indeed, somewhat different. A slow burn psychological suspense with a twisting, turning storyline and a compelling plot populated with a credible cast of characters with pleaty of dark secrets to go around.

I’m kind of excited because this is my first Netgalley review. Ty to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book!

Premise - young woman becomes housemaid at a home where her mum used to also be a housemaid, in the hopes she’ll find out what happened to her.

...I think there’s something wrong with Highwood Hall...

And, indeed there IS something wrong. I wasn’t sure when I first started if this would keep my attention or really be a good suspense novel. Well it did and it is. I highly recommend it.

Not only that, it does touch on feeling invisible and unwanted... being watched but not really seen (as a viable, valuable person). I loved the ending.

I would give this a good ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️++ stars. I now have to go read other books by Sarah Denzil!

This wasn't a bad book, it was intelligently written and very suspenseful. It was also very atmospheric and at times I thought I was reading a Victorian novel, until someone checked their cell phone. I was unimpressed by the big reveal though as I had it figured out almost right from the start. It didn't completely ruin the book for me as Ms Denzil is a great writer. I have loved many of her other books and would definitely giver her another go.

"I think there's something wrong with Highwood Hall."

Straight away I loved the setting; a huge manor house where it is easy to lose yourself in the maze of corridors, and where the history of the place informs the atmosphere of the story. It was also really interesting to read about the dynamic of staff and household, but in a modern setting.

This starts as an intriguing mystery that takes its time and slowly builds in creepiness. But from about half way through it becomes a pacy, edge-of-your-seat thriller where you're never sure what direction it will take. I read the second half in a day, so desperate to find out everything I could as quickly as possible.

I also loved the complex characters, from our eponymous housemaid and the staff at Highwood Hall (I got great Danvers vibes from the head housekeeper!) to the strange family they work for. I could never be sure who I trusted, right down to the unreliable first-person narrator. All of which meant I could predict what I thought would happen, but would frequently be proved wrong!

The writing is so accessible which gave me an immediate sense of empathy to carry through the story; at the very beginning she talks about desperately trying to avoid overheating when walking up to the hall, and it's so human and identifiable.

This book was really fun to read, with so much atmosphere and so many unexpected turns.

I really enjoyed this one. I've not read anything from this author before so I was looking forward to doing so. The writing was really easy to read and before you know it, you're hooked. It is full of twists that surprise you, and that ending?? It's engaging and exciting and all the things I look for in a book....loved the characters, even if some of them were hideous and can't wait to read more from Sarah ❤

Wow!
A fulfilling tale with a killer of an ending.
The Housemaid is desperately in need of a job and a place to live. She also wants to find out why her mother abandoned her at 6 months old, after working at the same property.
This is a story built on secrets.
An excellent well written story.

This was an enjoyable read with plenty of suspense throughout. The plot was great, the characters were interesting and the style of writing was perfect. It’s the first book I have read by this author but I’ll be keeping my eye out for more in the future. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys reading this genre.

This had so much potential! Started out strong with an engaging storyline and interesting characters. At around the 30% mark, the action started dragging and getting repetitious. Picked up again toward the end, but the ending was a little too convoluted for my taste. I will definitely try another title from this author!

Young woman with turbulent past starts to work as a maid in a vast Highwood Hall. The housekeeper Mrs. Huxley is creepy and hostile, the Howard family seems to be charming, the manor full of secrets. Nevertheless she is adamant to establish fresh beginning for herself. She also wants to find out what happened to her mother who worked in Highwood Hall years ago and vanished without the trace.

Something sinister is clearly on a horizon, when she gets a diorama with a murder scene. And the victim? Obviousy the maid.

People are not what they seem to be. Danger lurks around every corner.

The novel is dark, intricate and full of secrets. The maid stays nameless almost till the end, servants are still ghosts for upper classes, even in a modern Britain/world.

Beside all the twists, turns and mistery, the plot offers clear insight in a modern society and human psyche.

Excellent and gripping read.

Ooooh disturbing.. we like it. I don't know why I love nanny stories but they normally do it for me! It's clever and dark and smart and all the other words you HOPE your thriller is. But it also takes a stab at social commentary when it comes to class and rank. It was different.

'𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆'𝒔 𝒔𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒆 𝒉𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒆𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒕 𝑯𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒘𝒐𝒐𝒅 𝑯𝒂𝒍𝒍.'
This was one of the creepiest, craziest books I have read this year.

Broke, homeless, and tired of couch surfing, 21-year-old Ruby Dean, a recovering addict, ends up as a housemaid to the affluent Howards. But unbeknownst to them, Ruby has another motive - to find out what happened to her mother Emily, who was also a maid at the house twenty years ago, but is since then, missing. As she dusts and cleans under the watchful eye of the rigid housekeeper Mrs.Huxley, Ruby makes a plan to uncover the secrets of Highwood Hall.

Suspense drips from every page in this book. The plot twists were simply fascinating. The author's impeccable writing lends an eerie tone to the narrative, keeping you on edge. Despite the slow pace at the beginning, describing the minutiae of the maids' daily chores, I flew through the story at cracking speed, desperate to know what happens next. And yes, the grand reveal of the mystery at Highwood Hall, did live up to my creepy expectations.

The plot also gives you pause regarding the plight of maids everywhere. They are likened to a ghost - an unseen entity that slips through rooms, doing their jobs, but on whom the eye never lingers. Treated as second class citizens, they are replaced without a thought, based on the whims of their employer.

Overall, a well-crafted and thrilling page-turner. (I read this while at work; I was that engrossed.)
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
