This was a wonderful story. The prose was easy to follow while providing a natural flow and rhythm to the story in a familiar fashion to oral storytelling; exactly what you want for Greek mythology. The author took the original mythology regarding the Olympians and the Titans an gave it a unique spin that I had never seen before while still staying true to the base of the myth itself.
A wonderful follow-up to book one.
Unfortunately I did not have the chance to finish this book due to extenuation circumstances with. my health and ability to set aside time for reading.
I really liked this book. It was in the fantasy realm but still read like historical fiction because of the Greek mythology. I read this book without realizing it was the 2nd book in a series. However, I was still able to follow the story and knew what was happening, I am wanting to read the 1st book now. Thoroughly enjoyable. Quick read. The end did make me sad though.
I have tried a few times since I have received this book to get through it, but I officially will have to be DNFing it. I do not think this book is bad, but I do not think it is for me at this time.
I was not aware this was a sequel when I picked it up. That's on me. It was hard for me to get into it, as I felt very much as if I was missing a lot of info. I am sure that was because I picked up a second book in a series.
Overall the writing was good and the world building interesting. I did not feel quite invested in the characters. I stumbled a bit over some of the changes from mythology.
An interesting read. Through no fault of the author or NetGalley it was confusing to jump into it midstream as I did---that is all on me for not realizing it was a second book. I tend to immediately request anything mythology related.
That being said I'm not sure I'll go looking for the first book? I think reading the second first has taken away some of the narrative tension I might have found had I read them in the correct order.
Overall three stars for me personally but I will give it a four because of my own error in reading the second book in a series. I expect I would have liked it far more had I read it in its proper order.
I love a good retelling and this was an excellent one! I did not read the first book and yet I was sucked right into the story. I felt connected to the characters and their struggles. I definitely want to go back and read the first one.
I’d recommend this to adult fans is Percy Jackson or Madeline Miller fans.
Crown of Cinders by Emily R. King
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for gifting me this ARC in exchange for an honest rating and review.
Unfortunately, I'm not the intendet target audience for this series anymore. This has nothing to do with the skill of the author or the quality of the book. I just find that lately I can't bring myself to enjoy most of YA fantasy anymore. I rather fall into adult fantasy now.
If you liked the first book, I am sure this sequel will be worth a try.
I appreciate the publisher allowing me to read this book. I found the subject matter really interesting. The book was well written and easy to understand. I highly recommend this book.
What a sequel!!
This is a brilliant feminist retelling of the six Olympus siblings story. Althea is an amazing FMC and a badass heroine, but the supporting characters all bring something to the story. This is definitely a series for greek mythology lovers.
Crown of Cinders if a sequel to Wings of Fury (which I picked as my Amazon first reads).
I love the concept behind this story however it didn't hit the mark for me.
I can see why many others will adore this and wish it every success.
Thank you NetGalley for my earc.
This is the sequel to Wings of Fury! This is a fantasy series that revolves around Greek mythology. This is an improvement from the first novel! It was full of action! Therefore, I recommend this for fans of Kate O’ Leary, Rick Riordan, and Josephine Angelini!
King can do no wrong! I swear whatever she writes I will read! Its just that easy. She is one of those rare authors that I've loved every single story she has written! This one picks up where book one left off and takes on a magical ride that I could not put down. I need more stories set in this world asap!
I don't think the entire series is for me. I pushed through book 1 and I somewhat enjoyed it, and then I tried the same for books 2 but I couldn't. But I'm glad people enjoyed it. It just wasn't for me unfortunately.
great book by a new-to-me author … really enjoyed “Crown of Cinders” by Emily R. King and cannot wait to read more!
Emily R. King is an author I have a ton of love for and never disappoints. I really liked WINGS OF FURY and I LOVED CROWN OF CINDERS! COC took the characters and story I loved in WOF to a whole new level of epicness. I really enjoyed watching Althea come to terms with her true parentage and in her quest to reunite her siblings to defeat their father, Cronus, once and for all. I loved that this duology really gave a voice back to the goddess Hera and the roles that women played in epic tales that were silenced by men. Althea was a fierce heroine and I really couldn't help but just cheer her on. I wasn't super keen on the romance between Althea and Theo in book 1 but I fully was on board for them in book 2. There is also steam and I loved that this duology had a more distinct new adult feel than the author's previous novels (which I also loved). There's lots of epic battles and heartbreaking losses in this explosive finale, and lots of plot twists even until the last page that took me by surprise. Emily R. King proves time and again that she is an immaculate storyteller and the Wings of Fury duology is no different. Y'all should run, not walk, to read her books!
Crown of Cinders was the perfect follow up to Wings of Fury. I loved the writing style of the author as well as the way they bring the story to life. This series is so fun, and I definitely recommend it to fans of greek mythology retellings!
Amazing and magical! Like a beautifully woven tapestry, Crown of Cinders draws you in from the very first page and holds your attention up until the very end.
More feminist greek mythology retellings PLEASE! This book gripped me to the page and left me reeling. The wars, deaths, and tragedies that kept coming throughout this story ripped my heart out, but I wouldn't have it any other way, I love every angry woman in this book, and I need more from Emily King asap.
Crown of Cinders picks up where Wings of Fury left off. I try not to have any spoilers in my reviews, but this is a warning that there may be some details that slip through. I only recommend picking up Crown of Cinders if you’ve read the previous book in the series. This wouldn’t work well as a standalone.
Crown of Cinders introduces more of the Greek mythological characters that we’re familiar with. While Zeus played a role in the previous book, we’re finally introduced to Poseidon and Hades in this one, and I particularly loved the play between the Gods of Olympus as they band together and fight against their father and his allies.
I loved the pacing of this book, and how easy a read it was. The addition of new characters made the story richer, and I really enjoyed seeing them all interact and watching as the relationships and bonds between the characters shifted and changed over the course of the book. The one star off the rating in this one is due to the annoyance I had with some characters throughout the book. Not naming any specific names, but I wanted to like one or two of them as much as I liked the rest of the characters.
Many thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the digital copy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
I didn´t notice when I added this book to my list that it is a sequel. I picked up the first book but I didn´t have the time to finish it nor get to this one before the time was up. Even so, I´m going to finish the first one as i´m really enjoying it and i´ll hopefully read this one soon after. I give my best regards to the author and publishing team!
