A delightfully light urban fantasy/paranormal! This reminds me of the SPI Files by Lisa Shearin (first book the Grendel Affair)-a normal person suddenly gets sucked into the paranormal world only to discover great people who become her adoptive family. The note of romance is a great touch here too. I can't wait until the next book! This is going on my "series to track" list.
I'd like to thank the author, publisher and Net Galley for providing a free e-copy of this book in exchange for my review.
I really wanted to like this one, from the description provided, I expected a fun, light, quick read. But I just did not care for the main character and the writing felt off somehow. In some spots it felt like it was intended for younger readers then splashed with 'adult things' to make it for an older audience or something? I'm not really sure. I can't define what didn't work for me, but I was left feeling disappointed in the book.
I have to rate this 2 stars - "it was ok"
Phoebe, a regular human, somehow gets wrapped up in a curse that involves her with witches, warlocks, vampires and more. She must find a way to break this curse so that life can return to normal. (Though can that happen now that she knows about all of these enhanced humans?) With the help of her new friends and her very attractive boss, Phoebe sets out to break the curse.
Opinion
This is a great, quick read and a promising start on a new series. Being a huge fan of paranormal myself, I was enthralled by the cat and mouse type chase that took many detours along the way.
I found this new to me author to be refreshing in that she coated the story with humor and jest. The story moved at a fast pace and was interesting enough to make me want to stay up all night to finish it. (Unfortunately for me, sleep won over the book and I had to finish it the next day.) I look forward to reading more in this series as it comes out and also checking in to her other series as well.
Many thanks to Net Galley for providing me with an ARC of this book.
When evicted from her apartment, Phoebe finds a room to rent quickly. It is over a magic shop and opens her life to various magical creatures. Her boss, an antiques dealer, is delivered an artifact with a curse. Unfortunately for her, Phoebe accidentally hexes her former boyfriend. It couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy. The mystery to find out who sent the artifact and to break the curse begins. There’s mystery, humor and a hint of more to come.
Very cute book. I really liked the story but I feel like there were so many questions left unanswered. I did find it interesting and I'm hoping that in future books we'll see the characters develop more. Overall I would give 3 stars. Entertaining enough to make me want to read more.
Hexing the Ex is a delightful new series featuring a young woman drawn into the world of the paranormal. I loved watching Phoebe discover the paranormal and discover the ups and downs of being cursed. This is a truly fun read that left me wanting more.
A big thank you to NetGalley and Crimson House Books for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This is the first book of a series. This was a fast read. I was confused by some things, like why could she Now see the sign for the house? Why chose her? All the other inhabitants are paranormal? Hmmm see. I liked her landladies, and the cat. Phoebe seems okay. This could turn into a great series but this was just ok for me. There were some funny aspects. 3 stars
Loved this start to a cute and fun paranormal and magical series. Filled with interesting characters and plenty of action to keep your attention, looking forward to more.
I really thought this would be a book I would love...But... It all seems so poorly planned...
For starters, the House of Magic is within walking distance from Pheobe's house and yet the house "didn't want to show itself" to her until the point where she loses her apartment from flooding????? Can an apartment really flood like that?
Then her boss, who is also a supernatural being, is friends with her landladies and tenets who are also supernatural beings, BUT Pheobe is also living with these supernatural beings!!!! Wouldn't supernatural beings be wary of living with humans? If the house was so omnipotent then why didn't it play a larger role?
I'd say if the house-hunt had occurred after the curse, then sure, yeah, it could make some sense to me. But otherwise, nada.
The curse was a nice way to start the story but planning made everything confusing? The ending was anti-climatic and I didn't appreciate how it shed light on women after a breakup with the "hexing the ex" in both instances with Pheobe and Danielle. Why would she try to hex her ex-ex while fleeing from her ex?!
Also, if Danielle is such a posh woman with so much money and whatnot, why was she traveling through trains? It made no sense.
But hey, there are some positives too!
- Descriptions around London were amazing. I felt like I was traveling with Pheobe on this journey.
- Ashley. I loved her character. A woman who is strong and isn't scared to shred anyone into pieces. (Literally and figuratively.)
- It's an easy read, finished it within a day.
I received an advanced reader's copy of Hexing the Ex (House of Magic 1) by Susanna Shore from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This was the first book by Susanna Shore that I had read and I was pleasantly surprised to find an enjoyable new author and series to follow.
I very much enjoyed this novel and found it to be well written. The female protagonist, Phoebe, was hilarious from first introduction as her drug addicted roommate flooded their flat and caused their eviction (this is where the fun really starts), to the end where she and her boss, Archibald Kane, work on their slow burn romance while working together.
I liked how well crafted the entire cast of characters were and that the plot was evenly paced. It kept me engaged from page 1. Also, in addition to magic and intrigue, there action and momentum forward even in slower parts. I’ll definitely be on the watch for the next novel in this series.
This book looked like something I would really enjoy. But everything was too convenient from the off. From her boss to the new house it just seemed too lucky. And I know magic is supposed to be involved but it added a little less fun.
Not for me sadly.
Thank you Netgalley for this ARC for an exchange of an honest review.
Hexing the ex introduces us to a world of mages, warlocks, werewolves and vampires and magic exist but their existence isn't exactly known to ordinary people. It is a cosy and light read. However, paranormal is not my usual go-to reading material, so I didn't enjoy it as much. but overall, really good book!

I loved this book, it was a light and amusing read, top this off with magic and magical beings what’s not to love?! The main characters were all fun and the mystery in the story kept the interest from start to finish
Thank you Netgalley for this ARC for an exchange of an honest review.
It was an enjoyable read. I really liked this one, a fun book to read.
This book is a cozy and light read perfect for someone wanting to take a break from heavy reads and romance.

Due to some events Phoebe becomes involved in their world. She somehow manages to trigger a magical artifact sent to her boss and curses her ex boyfriend. This book focuses on her adventures to remove the curse and find the person who is behind sending that artifact with the help of the said boss and her new housemates.
The story is well written and executed. There's an element of mystery which kept me guessing and engaged till the end.
All the characters are likable and levelheaded. No dramatic scenes here and no romance at all!
The storyline centers around a cursed statue. This curse has some crazy consequences. There's plenty of action and magic in this story. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable.
Can't wait to read what the author brings out next.
Phoebe Thorpe comes back from visiting her parents in France only to find her roommate has flooded and damaged their apartment. HOW is she going to find a new place to live that she can afford? But luck seems to be on her side as she sees a sign for a room for rent on her way home from the pub.
Thinking things are squared away, Phoebe returns to work and ends up activating a curse from a statue that was sent to the shop. While she doesn’t believe in witches and curses, Phoebe finds that there is more to life than she has truly ever seen. But how can the cruse be broken before the curses she has inadvertently placed on those she knows come back around to her?
The first in a new, House of Magic, series set in London. This series has the potential to be quite good as the story continues on. I’ll be following along to see what’s next for this human in a magical world.
This was a great story full of fun and great characters. I really hope the author has more of this series published as it was a wonderful escape from the boring everyday routine. The writing was really light and all the characters jumped off the page. Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for allowing me to read a preview copy of this excellent book.
Hexing the Ex by Susanna Shore
Thanks to #netgalley for providing me with this e-book for an honest review.
Hexing the Ex wants to be a cute, cozy mystery book. Unfortunately it never quite makes it there. What it turned out to be was unengaging, a bit boring, and shallow.
Our main character, Phoebe, is returning from a holiday when she finds her apartment flooded (in the weirdest way ever) by her roommate. Desperate for a place to live she happens upon a sign for a room to rent in a unique shop. And Phoebe will soon come to find out how unique the shop, and those who inhabit it, really are.
I honestly can’t remember much about this book-although I just finished it last night. It was a cute enough premise but the execution was just… bad. The characters were a bit hollow, plot was a bit boring, and the story was unengaging all around.
Giving this book 1 star mostly because I liked the cat.
What a fun book to read! I eagerly dove into this book and I love how Ms Shore introduced us not only to Phoebe and Mr Kane, but to Ashley, Luca, Giselle and Amber… it seemed very organic and had a good flow to it. The action is impressive, the pacing is great and I loved how Phoebe’s was the narrating voice. I have a feeling that this will be a series to watch!!
