This is a gorgeous book full of inspirational stories. I loved how there was the perfect mix of both well known and unknow black female figures through history. It is the perfect book to read all in one go or dip in and out of when you need a hit of inspiration.
I have really enjoyed all the books that I have read in the Rebel Girls series, and this book was no exception! This was a beautiful book with wonderful illustrations. It follows the same format as the other Rebel Girls books - a two-page spread for each person that includes an illustration and short biography. This was a wonderful read! I would recommend it to anyone interested in women's history - but especially middle grade readers that are interested in learning more about history! Thank you NetGalley for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review!
Such a great addition to the series! I think it' so important to have a separate book for young black kids like this as there isn't enough representation in general media for them! This had a real diverse collection of inspirational people for any kid, and especially for young black kids that would pick this up. It truly shows the diversity in achievement and will teach them that they can achieve anything I they dream of. Love it!
If you are not already familiar with the Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls you are missing out. I absolutely love these books. They are empowering and interesting, for both adults and children.
I learned about so many great women through this book. What I love most about the stories is that the women come from all different areas. You don’t just meet actors and singers, you also meet scientists and artists and activists. It really opens young peoples’ eyes to the many different ways a girl can make a difference.
This book is always easy to read and understand for young people. It also has some important words like feminism and activism in bold, which encourages exploration and discussion around the terms. Oh and it’s a seriously beautifully illustrated book.
I love the 'Rebel Girls' books concept. I think this edition is informative book for kids or adults!
This book is gorgeously illustrated and just like the previous Rebel Girls books, provides information about strong Black women who have helped change the world for the better. The women come from a variety of countries and have various accomplishments from all over the spectrum, which I found especially inspiring.
This is a book I know we will be adding to our bookshelves and I appreciate having the opportunity to read and review this galley.
Perfect reading to include diversity and open communication on race with little people and as to be expected filled with wonderful and inspiring women. There’s a role model for everyone!
Another triumph of the “Girls” series of books that are a mainstay in my classroom.
Easy to read and understand for MG readers independently, but also something my younger god children enjoy having read to them.
As always with the “Girls” books, the selection of women featured is vast and while I knew some names, others were new to me and prompted more investigation.
Even as an adult I always find myself learning something new when I read these books.
Illustrations were beautiful as always.
YES! What a powerful addition to the collection of Rebel Girls stories. These amazing Black women who have forged the way for others. I flew through this one. I was so fascinated at the women featured and the impact rhey have had. Black girl magic at its absolute finest.
Goods night stories collection is one of my favourite collection for children and adults.
It shows us incredibly interesting and fascinating personas from all around the world.
People you maybe didn’t even heard about. And I love that.
I love that people who deserve some recognition, get it.
A fantastic book. Thank you to NetGalley for providing an advance copy. This has attracted and enthralled so many children - both boys and girls. Thoroughly recommended.
This book is the perfect length and span of topics for young readers. The stories are written in an engaging and conversational tone so it doesn't sound like a textbook at all even though it's a nonfiction book. The pictures are vibrant and engaging. It is also neat that each person in the book has a quote that is attributed to them so readers can get a glimpse of them in in their own words. This is also a great variety of people from around the world in a wide range of occupations. It's relatable for any young reader, but especially for Black children who can take pride in examples of their history being shown in a positive light.
4.5 stars.
I'm a big fan of the Rebel Girls books, so I am so excited to have gotten the chance to read and review Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls: 100 Real-Life Tales of Black Girl Magic. This collections features Black women as well as Black multiracial women from multiple ethnic identities. There are scientists, artists, athletes, politicians, and more, many from the present day but also plenty of historical figures. It's a brilliant mix of women, with gorgeous art provided by Black women and nonbinary people. This also had the most trans women I've seen included in a single collection that wasn't specifically about LGBTQIA+ people, so I have to give it major props for that. I also thought it was a great touch to include a very brief summary of the biographies of Black women featured in previous volumes of the series--it was a great way to revisit and be reminded of previous stories without having any repeats.
I docked the half star for a couple reasons (although only half a star because I didn't want to be nitpicky over what is an otherwise excellent and vital book). I took issue with the mild sanitisation of history in the story of Nzinga of Ndongo and Matamba, which said that when Portuguese negotiators tried to force her to sit in a subservient position on the floor that she "refused to let him make her feel inferior and did not sit on the floor." No further explanation. She used one of her servants as a human chair and it is weird to bring up this situation at all without mentioning how she managed to not sit on the floor. Additionally, I feel like most of the book handled disability pretty well, but the biography of Yetnebersh Nigussie near the end had an inspiration porn vibe that I didn't enjoy as a disabled woman. Also, when it got to the brief entries at the end to highlight Black women previously chronicled in the series, the limited space meant that most of the disabled women featured in the previous books had a vaguely inspiration porn vibe as well, even though I don't remember the series as largely having a problem with this (although it has been awhile since I read the first two volumes and I was perhaps not as aware of the ableism).
Anyway, overall this is a great new entry to the series, and I'm glad to have read it. I may have taken up a fair few lines writing about my issues with it, but these issues were minimal in the grand scheme of things. This series is one that is generally great to use as an introduction to the women who changed the world in the past and are changing the world now.
Another great edition to the series! This is a good book for everyone, not just children. It contains real-life stories about 100 black women and the stories were written and edited by black women. The stories are interested and the pictures are absolutely gorgeous. I love adding this to my son's book collection!
Thanks to NetGalley for providing me with this advanced copy and their writers.
Well this is a book that you want to say ummm chill anyways. However, you remember the messages that it can provide to us when we are reading this. That's why i give it to this book 3.0
A book that tells us more about Girls whom around the history...
This is a robust collection of stories and artwork about Black women doing remarkable things. There’s so much joy and power evident, with enough detail on each page to get a sense of each person, and knowing there’s more, this gives the readers an opportunity to dive deeper. As part of a larger collection, these could be read to children of any age.
I love "Rebel Girls". I have read quite a few of the ones in the past and it brings me so much joy to see more and more titles like this one on our library shelves!
The artwork is beautiful! The illustrations are fun, colorful, and really well done in a way that compliments each rebel's story and text. I think it is amazing for girls, boys, men, women, etc. to have access to titles such as these and see inspiring people doing inspiring things.
Though each entry is short and concise, I hope that it gives people a taste and a curiosity to go out and explore the lives of these women more in depth.
Beautiful! Rebel girls series is something out of this world and it makes me so sooo happy every time I see and read a new edition.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC in exchange of my honest review. I'm big fan of Rebel Girls; It started with reading Good night Stories for rebel girls and haven't stopped reading rebel girls ever since. In this instalment, I get to know women from different repartee like STEM, Artists, athletes. With Colourful & beautiful illustration, this book inspires the young black girls as well as person of colour that sky is never the limit. You can do anything that you put your mind too.
Rebel Girls books are some our favourite books. My daughter is so inspired by the people she reads about. She has chosen women from the books to written school projects on. l will recommend these books to anyone who will listen.
