Excellent book, informative. Incredibly hard to read on a Kindle or phone. It was so small in the current format I could barely read it but once I blew it up enough, it was great for our homeschool botany class.
Many thanks to @papress for this lovely illustrated book all about #trees !! It's a modern take on those encyclopedias of the past - getting so much specialized information on all things tree in ways that both adults and children will find intriguing! Im a huge tree lover so I decided to take this book on my walking work route when I have such lovelies to model with it!! Thank you!!
Check out this press and this book!!
I love that this is geared towards kids, so it makes it simple enough and there are wonderful and colorful illustrations. I really learned quite a bit about trees that I didn't already know!
Follow along in this guide to learn all about trees — the different parts of a tree, a tree’s lifecycle, how trees grow, how we use trees, and so much more!
As a lover of trees (as the daughter of an arborist, it’s inevitable, I suppose), I absolutely adore this book! It’s very comprehensive and thorough without being too overwhelming or in-depth for children. The quiz games scattered throughout the book are a fun addition and the botanical illustrations are wonderful! There’s so much knowledge to be found in this book. Definitely adding this to my collection.
This book had incredible information about trees. From the different parts of a tree, to the life cycle of a tree, to record breaking and interesting trees, this book has it all. It is hard to pick and choose which trees to include in a book all about them, but the author does a great job talking about trees common to all parts of the world not just a specific place. The full page spread where you find the tree based off the description and picture was a wonderful addition. It really helps one to see the trees in their "natural" habitat. This book was wonderful and I cannot wait to add it to our library.
The Book of Amazing Trees by Nathalie Tordjman and Julien Norwood (Illustrator) would be the perfect book to add to any child’s personal or classroom shelf. It is divided into manageable chapters with information that is interesting while being set up in bite size chunks. The information is some that is quite general and common but some that was also specific and new to me.
As a retired elementary educator I wish I had had this book in my classroom library. It is one that the illustrations, drawings, and artwork would have drawn students to look at but the information contained in it would have kept them reading, coming back to again and again. It is an amazing book about amazing trees.
The publisher through Net Galley provided a digital ARC. I have voluntarily decided to read and review, giving my personal opinions and thoughts.
A beautiful little book with plenty of information about trees. Great for kids and adults alike. I loved the illustrations and the way they mingled with the information. The way everything is lay out on the page makes the reading experience very enjoyable. I also learned quite a few new things.
The Book of Amazing Trees is a pictorial encyclopedia of trees aimed at younger readers by Nathalie Tordjman. Originally published in French in 2020, this English language translation from Princeton Architectural Press is due out 14th Sept 2021. It's 72 pages and will be available in hardcover format.
This is a really beautifully illustrated, accessible, scientifically correct book of trees of many different growth habits and from many different areas. The chapters are arranged logically and the abbreviated index makes information easy to find. The introduction covers some tree physiology, including types of leaves and their shapes. Following chapters cover growth, germination, adaptation, and a collection of facts about exceptional trees, admired for their size or their fruit or growth habits.
Short quizzes and more in-depth information are presented in highlighted text boxes throughout to allow readers to test themselves on what they've learned. The games and quizzes have solutions and answer keys in the back of the book.
Four stars. This would make a superlative choice for public or school library acquisition, classroom instruction, nature groups, or home use.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. This books is really filled with amazing trees and lots of interesting facts about them and illustrations too.
A pretty good children's non-fiction book on trees. The illustrations are beautiful and follow a naturalistic style. Definitely a more grown-up vibe, favouring accuracy over charisma and fun. The text was very informative, but the tone was a bit too sober for my taste. It didn't exactly get me hyped for the subject the way a lot of children's non-fic does, which didn't particularly help given a topic that isn't as immediately engaging for many as more charismatic subjects like mammals or birds. I recently read a (grown-up) non-fiction book on weeds that honestly had a much more fun tone throughout. I wasn't always crazy about the design, and the font used for some of the headings does not work for me.
As an outdoor educator I am always looking for books to add to our collection that will inspire wonder and education. This book certainly fit the mark. I can't wait to add this book to my classroom collection for the beautiful images that helped explain concepts and visual guides throughout that would certainly get children (and adults) thinking and wondering about the trees around them. I loved the hands-on activities included in the book that could bee done by any family or classroom.
This book is brimming knowledge and beautiful illustrations to go along with it. I learned a lot about the various types of trees, but it is accessible for various ages. The interactive elements (quizzes, matching, etc) were great, although having the answers at the end in ebook format was a bit difficult. Otherwise, the overall quality of the content and concept was great.
This is a nice introduction to trees for any reader. The layout is makes learning the basics of trees fun. Nice illustrations. What makes this book standout is that it presents facts about trees in a memorable fashion unlike basic tree identification books that can be overwhelming to those that want to learn about trees. This book makes a great starting point for learners.
A very beautifully illustrated, informative book for kids about every aspect of trees. It's got details on life cycles, leaves, bark, how trees make O2, the types of trees, you name it. The info is succinct and brief to where I don't think someone would get bored of it. Every so often there is a little quiz or a page that asks you to make observations, which I thought was a good way to get kids to involved with the reading. Recommended for readers above age 6 who are interested in nature and like to learn fun facts on their own. I definitely would have enjoyed it as a child, as I enjoyed it now.
Thank you Netgalley for an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Thanks to Princeton Architectural Press for the ARC of The Book of Amazing Trees by Isabelle Simler, Julien Norwood, and Nathalie Tordjman. If you are looking for a non-fiction text to learn about what makes a tree, a tree, this book is for you! This book has everything about trees and its components: life cycle, fruits, roots, leaves, trunks, etc. There is also information about products from trees, record breaking trees, and how trees adapt. Each page has beautifully detailed illustrations or diagrams with a paragraph or two of text to support it. The tier three scientific vocabulary is great for students to expand their knowledge and the context clues and pictures help support their understanding. This book is not designed to help you identify specific trees but gives you the knowledge about the details of a tree to help your observation skills. There are a few fun quizzes and I-spy pages to test out some of what was learned (answers in the back-yeah!). I believe all upper elementary students (grade 2+) and beyond will enjoy this book. I know I did as a teacher and nature nerd!
Thanks, #netgalley for an ARC of The Book of Amazing Trees!
This book is a fantastic middle grade resource for any science classroom. From explaining the life cycle of a tree, to the parts of a tree, varieties, categorizations, and a basic understanding of how it fits into it's ecosystem, this book is a perfect basic explanation for any student or a good starting point for a student's research.
As an adult, it was a good refresher on information I learned years ago in school and identifying proper terminology for things I was already aware of in more basic terms.
The beautiful artwork is a definite bonus! It's a lovely book to flip through, even if you are skimming (or entirely skipping) the text.
3.5 rounding up to 4.
The book has great information on trees including their shape, composition, leaf patterns, growth process, and so on. It also includes some interesting questions for which answers are provided at the end. There are also a couple of activities for children. The information is quite enlightening. I especially enjoyed the section on record-breaking trees.
The illustrations are superb. Though there aren't any actual photos of trees, the illustrations more than suffice to accurately buttress the information provided.
There are three suggestions I would like to make with respect to the content:
1. Right at the start, the book declares, "Trees are plants that tower high in the sky." Immediately to the right of it is a statement saying that trees grow in every size, from a subshrub to a fully grown tree. That first definition needs a rethink because smart kids will surely catch it.
2. The "banana tree" is shown in one of the illustrations but the banana isn't a tree at all; it's a large herb as it doesn't have a woody trunk. It's better if the label on the tree diagram simply mentioned "banana" so as to not confuse children.
3. The font was quite small and narrow in some sections of my copy. I'm not sure if this is because I was reading the ARC. But a slightly larger and more legible font would work better.
Other than these minor issues, the book is very well written and would serve as an eye-opener on everything connected to trees. This would be a valuable addition to libraries and schools. And of course, to every little dendrophile out there.
Thank you, NetGalley and Princeton Architectural Press, for the Advanced Review Copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
One for the school library, as this shuns any kind of pretension to entertainment, this does exactly what it wants as regards educating about trees. The different kind of leaves, the different kind of roots, and the different kinds of seeds that lead to all that – all is here, with crisp, clear presentation, both in the visuals and in the text. You also get quizzes and multiple-choice questions, and a basic spotter's guide at the end. Really good qualities in the visuals don't need the pages to get all funky and unreadable on us, and the writing is in very short chunks – rarely are three sentences strung together without a diagram or tree portrait to interrupt them. So no, it might not have the immediacy and vivid style of many books in the schools these days, but there is likewise no hindrance to learning that I find with the brash, modern approach. Four and a half stars.
This is such a cool book for inquisitive young readers. It has just about every answer to questions kids may have about trees. The pictures are gorgeous and this makes the perfect reference book for kids to read.
The Book of Amazing Trees is more informative than an elementary science textbook and twice as exciting to read about. There are 5 sections: An introduction, Growth (roots, leaves, photosynthesis), Lifecycle (how seeds grow and reproduction via flowers and pollination), Functionality (trees as lumber and food), and Types (coniferous, evergreen, ornamentals, etc). The illustrations are lovely and semi-realistic which is perfect to display accurate information while also having a slight cartoonish style that kids will find engaging.
This book is a perfect tool for an elementary school teacher and perfect for young children who have extra interest in science, biology, and plants.
