Thank you to NetGalley, Canelo and Jane Isaac for a copy in return for an honest review.
Sophie and Ruby are sisters who are mourning the death of their mother, following a vicious murder. Sophie’s boyfriend, Ewan attend the wake. Toby and Ewan share an accidental, drunken kiss. The place where the kiss takes place is near another murder. This is all I was reveal about the plot as no one likes a spoiler!
I have read a few of Jane Isaac’s books before and was thrilled to receive this one. It is a good psychological thriller which keeps you guessing throughout. It will be perfect for fans of the Netflix series ‘You’. The characters are likeable and the story is enjoyable. It is a little slow-paced in parts. A great thriller.
Sophie and Ruby are still recovering from their mother’s vicious murder when another murder occurs in their town which maybe linked to their mother.’s.
Sophie is a single mother with two children an ex husband and a newish boyfriend Ewan.
Following their mother’s memorial service Ewan bumps into a tipsy Ruby and kisses her near where the murder happens -they agree not to tell Sophie about what happens - and the story follows from this lie.
There are a lot of interesting characters and the author sets them up well as potential killers with another story intertwined.
Enjoyable thriller, if a little slow in places. I had worked out who the killer was about half way through but there were enough twists and turns to keep me reading.
3.5 Stars ⭐️
Thanks to Netgalley for allowing me to read this book in return for a fair review.
This book was a good one. not my favorite thriller ever, but not bad either. and i would say it has stalker/obsession over people kinda vibe which is always creepy
This average thrilled had enough to keep me reading but didn’t wow me like others have in the past. For starters, it was very easy to guess who the killer was. When you make a suspect a terrible person and and another one a seemingly genuine, nice guy, you know exactly who it’s going to be. In fact, at one point I thought, “the real bait and switch would be if it was actually the guy we thought was bad all along.”
I knew who the hero would be and that the row between the sisters wouldn’t last, and the whole thing was truly just a very average, predictable thriller without a ‘wow’ factor.
Great book. Highly recommend and will most defiantly read more by this author and suggest to others!
This was a good psychological thriller, it was a little slow at the start but soon picked up. The characters were interesting, the plot was good and the style of writing was perfect. There was a good few twists and turns throughout. This is the first book I have read by this author and I’ll be keeping my eye out for more in the future.
Thank you netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for a honest review.
A year on from the murder of their mothers, sisters Sophie and Ruby are holding a memorial service on what would have been their mother’s birthday. They are hoping to put the events of this horrific year behind them. The alleged killer was found guilty and sent to prison but still protests his innocence. Ruby walks home from the wake feeling a little worse for wear after drowning her sorrows and is followed by Ewan, Sophie’s boyfriend who makes a pass at her and tries to kiss her. Ruby pushes him away and they both decide to keep the incident a secret. A body of a woman is discovered the next day near to where they were and when they find a photo of themselves in the local paper taken with a dash cam Ruby goes to the police but doesn’t tell the full story. But when Sophie and Ruby discover that the woman’s death is linked to their mother’s, Ruby begins to be suspicious of Ewan especially when she notices bruising on Sophie and realises that she has become withdrawn and seems to be cutting herself off from everyone. Ruby begins to investigate Ewan’s past with dire consequences. I found this book a chilling and intense read with plenty of twists and turns. A great read.
Thanks to Netgalley and Canelo for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
Full of tension and mystery, this is another great book from Jane Isaac.
Ruby and Sophie have had what can only be described as an horrific year but things are not about to get much better any time soon when on the evening of their mother's wake, a woman is murdered but not just any woman, one that is connected to the man convicted and imprisoned for their mother's murder.
Then we have creepy boyfriend, Ewan, who just happened to be out jogging on the night of the murder, isn't forthcoming about his past and appears to be alienating Sophie from her friends and family. The more Ruby discovers about him, the more she fears for her sister. Sophie, however, is not convinced and gradually, the sisters' relationship starts to deteriorate.
Are the two connected or is it just a coincidence?
Jane Isaac appears to be able to create tension with ease and this has it in abundance. She is also able to create interesting and believable characters with each one having a purpose and adding something to the story. The pacing of the book is good; a little slow in parts but the last third makes up for it with the ending being quite satisfying.
Overall, I think this is a great start to Jane Isaac's foray into psychological thrillers rather than her usual crime thrillers and I, for one, look forward to going on the journey with her as, I hope, she writes more in this genre.
Many thanks to Canelo and NetGalley for my copy in return for an honest, unbiased and unedited review.
An intriguing and twisty thriller that kept me guessing. Really enjoyed. Will read more by this author.. 5 stars!
I couldn't get into this book at the start, I'm hoping to pick it up at a later date and be able to get into it,
A thriller of a book. It sucks you into the story and doesn’t let you go till the end. I could not put this one down at all.
Thank you NetGalley for providing this book for an honest review. This book is about two sisters Ruby and Sophie whose mother was murdered a year ago. The book did get slow at times but it did keep me interested to find out how all the other characters fit within the story and who was going to be involved in the ending twist. It was definitely worth reading.
I really have begun to really like thrillers that deal with families. This one is no different. Ruby and Sophie are sisters. Sophie is the youngest and the one that you would think that everyone will take care of. She has two kids and is a single mother. Ruby, is the caretaker, the older sister, the strong one.
Both are still reeling from their mother's death, but Sophie is taking it harder since she feels its her fault.
Not going to lie, Sophie was a little whiney for me at times, but I got it. She's has a pretty crappy time to deal with.
Ewan who is Sophie's boyfriend and he has some major secrets that he's been keeping. This had just the right amount of suspense and just the right amount of red herrings without going over board.
Thank you so much to NetGalley for the arc!
This book is not for me. Synopsis sounded better than book ended up being. I appreciate rather opportunity to read it, thank you to NetGalley & the publisher.
Sophie and Ruby are starting to get over the murder of their mother.
Sophie more than Ruby as she was the one who introduced the man to her mother .
On the night of the wake another woman is killed in the same way as their mother was
Has the wrong man been put away?
There are other things going on between Ruby, Sophie and Sophie’s boyfriend Ewan.
Ruby doesn’t trust him and the more she digs the more worried she becomes.
A brilliant book
Loved it
Thanks NetGalley
Sisters Ruby and Sophie's Mam was murdered and the story continues from there. Another murder and lots of suspects makes this a very good read
One Good Lie by Jane Isaac was another great read that had me hooked from the beginning and I was stuck in my chair until I had finished this latest book by Jane (Yes, I had Loo breaks and coffee breaks but my house chores went out of the window and it was egg on toast for dinner! lol) Especially as this a new standalone psychological thriller. What a great book this was.
I loved the characters of Ruby and Sophie who are sisters and they're still struggling with the death of their mother, who was murdered.
Ruby has always been the strong, older sister. Sophie has always been the delicate one, and as sisters we do worry about each other especially as Ruby is worried about Sophie, who feels so guilty for introducing their mother to the man who would eventually murder her.
WoW......and then the fun starts there! especially as Ruby suspects Sophie's boyfriend Ewan of foul play as he was in the area when the woman was killed around the same time of her death. What is Ewan hiding? and is her sister in danger?
I highly recommend this book it was an excellent read.
Big thank you NetGalley, Jane Isaac and Canelo for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an review; all opinions are my own
On the night of her mother’s wake, only one thing brings Ruby comfort; the knowledge that her mother’s killer is safely behind bars. But guilt is eating away at fragile younger sister Sophie, who brought their mother’s killer into their lives. This is why Ruby is glad that Sophie is with her supportive boyfriend Ewan, despite Ruby’s doubts about him. He’s been Sophie’s rock, not only taking care of her, but her little kids, too. So what if he doesn’t like talking about his past? But when news of another woman’s murder spreads through their town like wildfire, Ruby is shocked to find herself with reason to suspect Ewan of the crime. And with one good lie driving a wedge between the sisters, it’s hard for Ruby to get Sophie to see what she sees. Ewan is keeping dangerous secrets. But he’s not the only person close to home who has something shocking to hide.
I liked the sound of this read; it has a strong premise that sounded intriguing and I was keen to begin, It started off well, a distraught family in the most terrible of circumstances. The emotion and grief they were feeling came off the pages in waves. Sadly, as the book progressed, it lost its way somewhat and I was bored for a large part of the book, something I was not expecting. I did not find the atmosphere to be particularly exciting or gripping, I thought it was quite clear what would happen and I was desperately waiting for something to change it but this did not happen. In itself, this would not be a terrible thing but I do not think it can be described as a psychological thriller.
I did think Isaac's characters are very strong, especially our two female leads; Ruby and Sophie. They are very likeable, easy to get to know and understand and they both go through a lot during the course of the read. There are times when they are weak and strong and it works really well and only helps to envisage them as human. The supporting characters are strong too and all have a role to play but it is our female leads that are shining stars for me.
'One Good Lie' is a good read that I did enjoy but I thought it could have been better, I did still enjoy it though.
Thank you to NetGalley and Canelo for an advance copy.
Ruby and Sophie are sisters and when Sophie unwittingly introduces their mother to the man that will ultimately kill her, she is wracked with grief and guilt. As if that wasn't bad enough, then another woman they know is killed a few days later and they really need to figure out how much danger they are both in. A gripping suspense.
One Good Lie is the story of two sisters. Ruby and Sophie, their mother Aileen was murdered by her boyfriend - A man Sophie introduced her Mum to.
When he was sent to prison the sisters tried to get their lives back together. Then the body of a woman is found, she too has a connection to the man who murdered their Mum.
This sets off a chain of events that cause the sisters to question everything, including each other.
I wanted to love this book, but I didn’t. It struggled to hold my attention. It was quite a slow burn to begin with and for me, it never reached the expectations I had after reading the synopsis.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for gifting me an ARC in exchange for a honest review.
