I enjoyed this book but I didn't love it. It was entertaining and a cool concept, but the main character kind of annoyed me. She just came across as very whiney and selfish to me. A lot of the characters were not my favorite. I just didn't enjoy how they were written. I did enjoy how chaotic the plotline was and how she did it all thanks to tequila shots.
This was a good romance, with a nice ending! And I love the cover of it!
I received an e-ARC from the publisher.
It had good character development of the heroine but was also very predictable. The cover is adorable.
It's Raining Men is a book that really took me by surprise. I'll admit when I first saw the advance reader copy on Netgalley, the famous hit by The Weather Girls immediately started playing in my head. You know: "it's raining men! halleluiah! it's raining men!" which I'm pretty sure was author Julie Hammerle's plan all along. And if it was then I was her perfect audience!
It's Raining Men follows forty year old Annie who is a doctor and has always put her career first. Being a concierge doctor forces her to be on call 24/7 in order to maintain her professional relationship with several high end patients. The 24/7 on call business impacts her ability to have a life outside of it. Suddenly, she realizes that while she has been working everyone else around her has started to settle down. Drunk and upset with herself, she accidently sends a text message to a bunch of her male friends and colleagues propositioning them with an offer for a marriage of convenience.
To Annie's surprise two very different men answer her text and want to try this relationship of convenience idea. The first is her childhood friend Rob, whose mother is her mother's best friend. The second is local new anchor Darius, the man of the town so to speak. One can offer her stability in her life while the other can offer her new opportunities and ways to expand her business. Yet neither of them strike a real chord with her of love, romance, or passion.
Enter Dax. Dax is a twenty-seven year old musician who is working at the bar that Annie gets drunk at the night she sends the infamous text message. Dax is the opposite of what Annie is looking for - and she isn't too fond of the way that he challenges her. He also happens to be a random trivia buff just like her. Suddenly Annie's life goes from no men to there being three men who want a chance with her. It's Raining Men!

I loved Annie and Dax. On the surface they are polar opposites but they have this connection which refuses to be left alone. Finding this connection also forces Annie to deal with other issues in life. I found this to be a very honest look at a woman who is so career focused that other things in her life have fallen to the way side. I could relate to this and I think there are other women who will be able to relate to it as well. It broke my heart watching her close friendships fall apart at the seams but, it all felt so authentic. Growing older is not easy. There are varying challenges that everyone must go through in order to figure out their next step in life.
It's Raining Men is such an adorable rom-com but, it also has plenty of heartfelt moments. It brings forth questions of what a good friendship is; what the foundation of a good relationship is; and how dedicated you must be to your career. It challenges the reader to remember that it is never too late to live the life that you want. If you're looking for a well balanced story filled with humor and love, this may be the perfect fit for you.
This book was...fine. As a contemporary rom-com, it had some entertaining moments, but was overall underwhelming. It started with a fun idea for a plot, but had lackluster characters that made the execution fairly disappointing.
I did enjoy the older woman/ younger man relationship between Annie and Dax. Obviously I loved Joanne the dog (how could you not?). And the drunk text marriage proposal that Annie sends out to almost 40 guys? That was a great start! I just it would have panned out to be funnier. It was like, the 2 guys who responded to her and expressed interest each got one or two scenes after that and it was just really flat. And yet they both proposed? It was just really odd. And it was pretty obvious from the start that Annie would eventually end up with Dax.
None of this is necessarily bad, but overall the book fell flat for me.
It's Raining Men was definitely entertaining, but, unfortunately, I found the main character hard to relate to. However! That's on me. I'm a woman in my mid-20s, so what a woman on the cusp of forty faces greatly differs from what I face. It's an easy and enjoyable read though!
3.5 rounded up. This was an entertaining story featuring an older woman protagonist (Annie), which I loved btw. So many romcoms feature younger women this was a refreshing change. Very relatable characters and a fun cast of 'bachelors' that Annie gets to get to know and find out what it is she's looking for in love. A light-hearted, feel good romance perfect for the summer and what a cute cover! Much thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my advance review copy.
Thank you so much NetGalley and Entangledteen for a chance to read this amazing book! This was one of the best romcoms I’ve read in awhile. My heart was all over the place with this book is the best way possible. This book no only was follow your heart but do things for yourself not for anyone else. Each and every character was a strong willed charter I loved it!
It’s Raining Men is a sweet, light-hearted rom-com that my Mid-Life Goddesses will totally adore. Our almost 40 year old Annie is an assertive, career-driven heroine who doesn’t need a man. She has her besties and a successful concierge medical practice catering to the rich and famous of Chicago. One by one her darling girlfriends are falling to the fate of marital bliss. Her roommate announces her engagement and Annie tucks up to the bar for some tequila shots then drunkenly sends out a text to 39 of her male contacts looking for marriage. Talk about a morning after “text of shame”.
Well, two of the 39 men respond with a “let’s do this!” and thus begins a dating adventure with both gentleman who could not be more opposite. Robert is literally the “boy next door” to her childhood home. He also has an in with Annie’s mother for rallying support. Darius is the outgoing popular news anchor who can get her into all the high profile restaurants and nightclubs around Chicago – via the VIP line.
Oh, but there is one more man who actually witnessed the drunken evening of texting while trying to tell her it was a bad idea. Dax is your gorgeous, tattooed, 27 year old starving musician by day and attentive bartender by night. While newly divorced, he finds himself and his precious pup Joanne (such a lovely doggie!) in desperate need of a place to stay. Queue the forced proximity troupe that I am absolutely here for along with some major Cougar vibe!
There are trivia bar game shenanigans with Annie’s newly mated girl group, Yessi and Kelly, that provide some comedic relief and a dose of bitchy bridezilla mania. All of the characters were charmingly well-written and easy to relate to in your own circle of gal-friends. While Annie is on the clock 24/7 with her high-profile clients, she does find some work/life balance in the end. Which was really what I was screaming for from the beginning.
It’s Raining Men will make for a delightful afternoon read to take your mind off the fact that we are actually heading into the rainy season at summer’s end. I truly understood and related to our
“approaching mid-life” heroine’s grappling with choosing to prioritize her career for so long – and she get’s her HEA and it is so sweet.
I was provided an ARC from the author, NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for an honest review.
It’s Raining Men by Julie Hamerlee was an engaging age-gap romance. This book explored a woman’s life as she’s about to turn 40; changing relationships with friends, lack of companionship, married to her job, leaving her questioning her life’s choices. I enjoyed the funny banter, the quirky characters, and the growth of the main character throughout this book.
Annie is a concierge doctor in Chicago who is on call for her patients 24/7 which doesn’t leave her much time for a social life or her friends. Her roommate, Kelly, has been out of town helping her parents for an extended time and Annie is feeling lonely and a bit isolated. When Kelly announces she’s engaged it throws Annie for a loop and after quite a few drinks at the local bar, she sends out a text to the men in her contacts saying she’s looking for companionship, and is ready to be married, without all the games of dating. While she is a bit mortified the next morning one because of the text and two because the cute, younger bartender brought her home and stayed (platonically) with her overnight, she gets two responses that intrigue her. One is from Rob who she grew up with living next door and their mother’s are best friends. The other is Darius a local television personality she met recently when he did a segment on her practice. Both men and interested and she decides to go all in and date them both before making a decision.
I really liked Annie’s character; she wasn’t perfect but she had a good heart and was always jumping in to help others. She was witty and smart and I appreciated her love of trivia. While it becomes apparent that her job gets in the way of her relationships with her friends, I actually found that part of the story a bit over the top. Her friend Kelly was just a royal b*tch throughout the story and it got real old real quick and while I understand it was necessary to help Annie reevaluate her life, I felt it could have been done with much less drama. As she dates Rob who honestly was a bit of a bore and Darius to was a bit smarmy and too smooth, Dax (the younger 27 year old bartender and new platonic roommate) worries she’s settling and should hold out for love. Soon Annie begins to see Dax in a new light and while she worries incessantly over the age difference and the fact they are in different places in their lives she enjoys everything he’s offering.
While this is a rom-com, it was balanced with some powerful, emotional moments making It’s Raining Men a highly enjoyable and completely entertaining summer romance.
Super cute romcom storyline and some funny banter. I love how Annie goes on a self discovery after having too many shots one night and one crazy drunk text message. I enjoyed reading how a 20 year friendship can hit a ruff patch but come out of it in the end. Love that there was a bit of age gap between the leads but love still won.
So I was initally drawn to this book because of the title (my coworkers and I were in a lip sync battle and we used this song. It was great *insert crying laughing emoji*)
I will admit that, even though the premise sounded interesting to me when I first looked at it, the actual book took a minute to get into, and I was skeptical of it for a while. But overall, it was a fast and relatively enjoyable read. Definitely something I'd recommend if you're looking for a beach read kind of book.
I received an e-arc of this book from Entangled Publishing and Netgalley, but all thoughts expressed are my own
This novel is right up my RomCom loving alley! This book had me up long into the night, turning page after page. I am pretty sure there was a time or two I may have woken my husband up from sleeping with my laugh out loud chuckles.
This is my first Hammerle novel and it definitely will not be my last! Her characters are beautifully chiseled and I fell in love with Annie instantly! Enter in Rob, Darius, and Dax, and the story just takes on a fun, quick, hilarious read!
Hammerle has a unique writing style and I will not soon forget this one! It’s a re-read-able book and I am looking forward to making this novel a permanent fixture on my shelves. I can not wait to get my hands on more of this author’s work. Hats off to Hammerle on a fantastic 4 star read!
*I received a complimentary copy of this book from Author/NetGalley, Entangled Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review, positive or negative.*
It's Raining Men is a quirky rom-com that is so easy to enjoy. Julie Hammerle will remind us all to never drink and text at the same time! ;)
Annie is a concierge doctor in her forties. She is single and doesn't think finding the perfect man is in the cards for her. But she begins to question everything when her roommate and best friend suddenly gets engaged and leaves her on her own. Does she want that life or will she live with being single?
One drunken night leads to her sending a massive text to every male contact on her phone asking if anyone is interested in settling down with her. To her surprise, two men respond. One is her high school crush and the other is a well-known news reporter. Now that she has options, what does she do?
I give It's Raining Men 4 stars. It's a romantic and fun read. It's so exciting to make your own choice for Annie's perfect man as you are reading. Julie Hammerle brings the romance and laughs.
A cute rom com that was a fun read.
I really enjoyed the premise of this story. I thought the predicament Annie found herself in hilarious.
I loved all the side characters (especially Dax & Joanne) but I struggled with Annie’s character. She fell a little flat for me.
Overall a cute love story with some great banter.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for sending me a copy. All opinions expressed are my own.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for providing me with a copy of this eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Annie is 40, and has worked hard to get to where she is - a concierge doctor. This means friendships and relationships have fallen by the wayside. When her BFF unexpectedly gets engaged, Annie gets drunk and decides to text everyone in her phone to find herself a relationship.
I initially didn’t really like Annie. She’s constantly oncall and ditches her friends at the slightest provocation, gets all “woe is me” when she gets called out for it or realises her friends are moving on, but makes excuses rather than doing anything to lighten her workload. It definitely felt like a plot device so we could see how much Annie grows, but it did mean that I struggled through the first half of the book.
However, once Annie started loosening up and was firmly on her path of self discovery, it became a much easier read and I got quite invested in it. It was nice to read a romance book where the MC was older and where the happily ever after isn’t 100% perfect sunshine and roses, but it completely fits the feel of the book.
I’d recommend for anyone looking for a more realistic romance, and who has the patience to stick with Annie until she gets with the program.
I found this book to be hard to read, mostly because I thought Annie was a really unlikeable character. I appreciated a book where the heroine was nearing 40, but thought she was really selfish and not approachable by her loved ones. I appreciate the message that a woman doesn't need a partner to be happy, but thought the delivery in this one wasn't one I enjoyed.
It's Raining Men was a refreshingly different storyline. Annie Kyle is a successful concierge doctor. She's succeeding in her career, but seems to be failing in her personal relationships. With her fortieth birthday approaching, she realizes she wants a "permanent plus one." She's tired of random dating and coming up with nothing. With this realization, she decides to let two very different gentlemen woo her with the ultimate goal of marriage. They both know that it's basically a business transaction and no one appears to be looking for true romance or love. A date is set and once they arrive at that point, she needs to choose. Of course, they both try to propose in advance of that point and Annie won't give them an answer. It just might be that she is interested in another man...one she never saw coming.
I really enjoyed this book. I liked that Annie was career driven and needed to figure out how to blend in "living her life." It was a cute, but still powerful story. There is a great deal of emotion throughout the book, along with some self-discovery. Naturally, there is also some much needed humor. Everything was well-balanced and worked for me as the reader.
Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC. I voluntarily chose to review it and the opinions contained within are my own.
Really loved this book! Loved the story about Annie trying to find the love of her life! I wont spoil the ending but so pleased how it ended. I will definitely be recommending this book.
I really had a good time reading this book!
Annie is almost 40 years old and her bff gets engaged.. and she starts to realize that her dream of growing old and single with her friend isn't going to work out. She drinks a bit too much and propositions almost all the men in her contacts.
It was fun to watch Annie date a few men and try to figure out her life. I loved the love interests but I am very glad she ended up with the man she ended up with! He was always my favorite.
If you are looking for a romcom and with lighten your heart and make you laugh out loud, then pick this one up!
Thank you to the publisher for my copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
