I loved Rob Harrell's Monster on the Hill so I was excited to hear about this new series. It is really funny, smart and silly, I can't wait for the next one.
Laugh out loud plot with the wonderful voices from Gary Yorkshire, a fuzzy pink pig, his friends Brooklyn the bat with an attitude, and Carl the fish who doesn't keep secrets very well. Friendship, potty humor, superheroes, puns, jokes make this a “hard yes” for fans of Dav Pilkey's Dog Man, and yes it will fly off the shelves.
Thank you to Netgalley and Penguin Young Readers Group for the review copy of Batpig: When Pigs Fly by Rob Harrell. This book is an absolute HOOT!
Gary is having a pretty normal life when a radioactive bat bite gives him super powers. Gary decides to use his powers for good save the city. First, he needs to come up with a great slogan and figure out how to vanquish bad guys with the help of his best friends - Carl the fish and Brook the bat.
Students in second through fifth grade (and probably beyond) will love the puns, the hidden jokes, and the on point bathroom humor. I laughed multiple times while reading this book. I immediately put my physical copy in my shopping cart.
Happily added Batpig: When Pigs Fly to my new BER.org seminar: What's New in Children's Literature. Can't wait to travel the country, telling educators about this new graphic novel.
You've seen Batpig before--if you read the author's, Wink. Full of humor and adventure, join our hero as he learns it's not so easy living a double life--especially when you're supposed to be babysitting. And keeping a secret from your best friend is not only difficult, but it can also be hurtful. Can you keep a secret and your friends? Find out in Batpig: When Pigs Fly.
Great for fans of heroes, graphic novels, and those who like to laugh. Here's to a short wait before our next Batpig adventure.
This is a super cute graphic novel that I think would be great for middle school aged kids. My favorite character was Brooks by far.
The two volumes in this graphic novel include two themes that are popular with middle grade readers--friendship and super heroes. The adventures of Batpig, who comes into being after ordinary pig Gary is accidentally bitten by his friend, Brooklyn, a bat, and develops superpowers. Eventually the Batpig persona is developed. Readers see Batpig fight wrongdoing in his town with the help of his buddies. With its zany scenarios and bits of gross-out humor, this one will be a hit in the middle grades.
My class loved Rob Harrell's Wink last year and when we learned that Batpig would get his very own book it became a must buy for our librarian (also me). The origin story of a character that Harrell's main character in Wink drew as a hobby did not disappoint. It was funny, clever and had other well developed characters. We would consume more of these books to be certain.
I almost overlooked this one. I saw it in a catalogue, but didn't order it. There was just something about the cover that didn't appeal. I also didn't notice that it was written by Rob Harrell. If I had, I probably would have bought it as I loved Wink.
Luckily, I then received an eARC from Netgalley. This is one of the funniest graphic novels I have read! It is very clever, with a dry sense of humour. It has just the right amount of toilet humour for the target market ("That's so pooping awesome!") and little asides to the reader ("Look at Carl keeping a secret! Go Carl!"). I devoured this in one setting, thoroughly enjoyed it & then went straight back to my catalogue & purchased it for our library!
I received an electronic ARC from PENGUIN GROUP Penguin Young Readers Group through NetGalley.
First in a new series by Harrell.
Gary's (pig) friend, Brooklyn (bat), accidentally bites him and suddenly he develops some superhero abilities. After some trial and error, Batpig is created. He heads around town stopping some minor and then a bit more major as Gary gains confidence.
Two stories are included in this volume. Mid to upper elementary level readers will appreciate the ridiculous scenarios and dialogue. The artwork brings readers in to the scenes and lets them be part of the action as the three friends learn valuable lessons to go with the fun and crime fighting.
There are several graphic novels featuring pigs this year! I think this one will still stand out because it's so funny.
I think authors see the success of Captain Underpants and Dogman and just want to recreate it, but do it with little success. (Not that I'm a fan of either of those either.) Batpig is filled with toilet humor (literally), bad cliches, and not that great of friendship. I get that this was written to appeal to young boys, and honestly it probably will, but I hate that in order to get young boys to read it has to be bad jokes and poor friendship.
Gary was just an average pig, hanging out with his friends Carl (a fish) and Brooklyn (a bat) when an unfortunate (fortunate?) event gave Gary superpowers! Now, in an effort to fight wrong doers, and maybe even supervillains, Gary needs the help of his buddies - he needs his secret kept, he needs a cool costume and a catchy slogan - and maybe some advice.
We first met Batpig in Harrell's Wink, as a comic Ross used to help make sense of his condition. I loved those panels so much and was excited to see Gary's "origin story". Really funny, and there's a bunch of silly gross stuff -like sticking gum up Gary's nose - that will not only keep the readers engaged, but will leave them wanting more. I know I'll need more than 1 copy of this - hope this is going to be a series.
Hilarious. Perfect for fans of Captain Underpants.
3 things:
1-hilarious
2-friendship
3-connection to Wink
Thank you NetGalley and Dial Books for sharing a copy in exchange for an honest review.
I have found lots of great graphic novels recently and I have found another hilarious one that will be a series. Meet Batpig! He was a normal old pig but then he was bit by his friend, a bat, and next thing he knew he felt a little funny… He became BATPIG! Another laugh-out-loud graphic novel with a great cast of characters and lots of action to interest readers of all ages. I think this series will be great for fans of any superhero stories and The Bad Guys series, too.
