I’m not sure what it says about me when I pick up book 13 in a series that I’ve never read. I almost wonder if it’s a challenge to the author because either I won’t understand what is going on or I will be so enraptured that I can’t put it down. Definitely the latter. This book held its own as far as an action packed suspense that can be read as a stand alone. It took a ten hour audiobook to listen to its entirety but an amazing story.
What did I like? I’m intimately familiar with Amish due to where I grew up. So I was always curious about there customs and way of life. This book was an amazing tale of one black sheep that left the fold and then was murdered near the sleepy town. I really enjoyed Kathleen’s narration because it reminded me of a cop’s voice with no inflection. Five huge stars for the story and narration!
Would I recommend or buy? Definitely get the audiobook by Macmillan Audio. The suspense as the narration read had me squirming in my seat! I absolutely loved the audiobook and recommend to anyone loving a suspenseful book!
I received a complimentary copy to listen to and voluntarily left a review!
Awesome read. This is a series. The suspense will keep you listening. The author Linda Castillo will keep you reading until the end without giving away to many clues of who done it. The narrator done a great job on the different voices of characters and don't give away any clues either. I would recommend reading previous books in this series.
An amazing author and incredible characters make this a great read that you don’t want to miss. The story is filled with suspense, tense moments, heartfelt emotion and ends with a great conclusion.. I love this whole series and have a hard time waiting for each new release.
Once again Linda Castillo proves herself to be a talented storyteller. At book thirteen, I worried that this book might feel stayed, but I was so happy to return to this small town. With each book, the characters continue to grow and mature.
In terms of the mystery, I found this one to be well plotted and not predictable. Sometimes the perspective shifts give away too much, but not in this case. I am happy that I didn't put the pieces together too early and instead figured it out along with Kate.
If you are a fan of the Kate Burkholder mystery series, then you will definitely want to check out the latest book. Of the later books, this is one of the best.
Disclaimer: I received an audiobook review copy from the publisher. I highly recommend the audio version because the narrator is amazing. I enjoyed the interview at the end of the audiobook.
I hate when one of these books end, but I need answers and Linda Castillo never disappoints, and Fallen is no exception.
This one kept me guessing, and even when I finally knew the answers I kept waiting for another person to really be guilty.
This one has a bit of everything, and will keep you page-turning, deception, murder, friends and family.
Yes, this can be read alone, but your in for a treat there are now thirteen books to choose from and eight novellas!
I love spending time with Chief Kate Burkhholder, Mona, Pickles, Glock and of course, Tomasetti, they have become like old friends, and looking forward to more future reads!
I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Macmillian Audio/ Minotaur Books , and was not required to give a positive review.
I’m a big fan of the Kate Burkholder series. Even with book #13, it still feels fresh. This time, a young woman who was expelled from the Amish community comes back to Painters Mill and is violently killed in her hotel room. There are lots of possible suspects, as the woman had tangled with many people within the community, even writing a tell-all memoir filled with all sorts of juicy tidbits. I was surprised that Castillo introduced a lot of suspects at the beginning but most don’t really go anywhere. I would have liked to have learned more about one of those possibilities.
I love this series as it mixes a semi-cloistered community with real world crime. Castillo always gives the reader a good sense of the beliefs of the Amish community. She consistently keeps me guessing as to who is behind the crime. And boy, this time, I had no clue.
This can be read as a standalone but you won’t have the full background of either Kate or Tomesetti.
I was also thrilled to find an interview between the author and narrator at the end of the audiobook. Kathleen McInervey has been the narrator of this series for quite a while and does a good job.
I had both the written and audiobook version of this book. My thanks to NetGalley, Macmillan Audio and St. Martin’s Press for advance copies of this book.
3.5 Stars. I listened to this book not realizing that it was part of a series, it was easy to follow even jumping in this far into the series. I enjoyed climbing into the Amish community and appreciated the descriptions of their lives and surrounding countryside.
The mystery of who killed a young woman who had left the Amish community but was back for a visit is what keeps Kate Burkholder, Chief of Police, busy. A potential crime committed a dozen years ago may have a bearing on the murder. It's a pretty standard cop/who dunnit with the added benefit of the Amish culture.
Thanks to NetGalley for the advance audio copy.
(May 2021) This was a second reading of and an ARC of this book, this time in audio. Earlier this year I received an ARC of the e-book from NetGalley, and I loved it. I had already listened to Kathleen McInerney narrate all the rest of the books in this series and so I could not help but "hear" her voice in my head as I read the digital copy. Yesterday my pleasure was compounded when I quickly finished listening to the "Real McCoy" after NetGalley and Macmillan Audio offered me a chance to listen to McInerney audio narration.
(March 21) Another blast from the past shows up in Chief Burkholder’s proverbial Painters Mill doorstep. This time DEAD. Our book opens with <b>the murder scene</b> (I would have added a sound effect but I don't see how to do so in the formatting tips). A woman opens the door of her motel room and welcomes in a visitor, who suddenly proceeds to bludgeon her to death…not a pretty picture. Katie is called in and immediately recognizes the woman as a fellow Amish was-been, Rachael Schwartz, who left the fold in her tumultuous teens and later went on to write a tell-all book about the seedier members of her community. Rachael was not a very nice person, as it turns out, and she earned quite a few enemies in her short lifetime, all potential persons of interest in the case.
This was one of my favorite Kate Burkholder mysteries to date! Glock, TJ, Pickles, Mona, and the steamy Tomasetti were all in attendance, and also, Lois Monroe, a new player, who takes over as dispatcher, freeing Mona to assume her duties as Painters Mill’s first fulltime female police officer.
Castillo keeps us guessing to the end. I nearly hurled my Kindle across the room in frustration when Castillo tossed in a red herring, <spoiler>Katie’s brother apparently has a secret related to Rachael, according to Bishop Troyer </spoiler> but then buries it and never gives us the scoop, after dangling a prospective juicy tidbit in front of our noses. Dang! I really wanted to know the secret!
Although she did manage to smash up another Explorer, at least this time Katie did not enter the suspects house without first calling in backup (well not exactly anyway), but she still managed to get herself seriously roughed up and dig herself in deep (double entendre intended, LOL) in the final exciting scene.
Thank You NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press/Minotaur for an ARC of this newest book in my favorite series by Linda Castillo, and Thank You Macmillan Audio for the opportunity to listen to this book read by the excellent narrator of the Kate Burkholder Series, Kathleen McInerney. I LOVED IT!
This is book 13 in the series. Rachel Swartz leaves the Plain life but takes secrets with her. Chief of Police, Kate Burkholder is shocked when she finds that Rachel has been brutally murdered. She is told that Rachel has many enemies. When long buried secrets resurface, Kate must find the murderer before he strikes again. I love this series. Castillo is a great writer and storyteller. The book has twists and turns I didn't see coming and the ending is a complete surprise. Can be a standalone but should start at book 1 in order to get all the background on the characters. Looking forward to book 14. Thanks to Minotaur Books and NetGalley for a free copy for an honest review.
Thanks to MacMillian audio for a copy of the audio of this book. Kathleeen McInerney is a great narrator and she is the voice of Kate Burkholder. I love reading along with the audio. It makes for a great experience.. I also loved hearing from the author at the end of the audio.
An especially brutal killing of a young woman (who was formerly Amish) raises numerous questions of who killed her and why? A real page turner with multiple twists and turns, the story will take the reader down a path that peels away layers of the victim’s past. At the helm of the investigation is Kate Burkholder, Chief of Police. Her character is totally believable, likeable, and a strong core character. Supporting characters are well defined.
The Audio version is Brilliant....narrated by Kathleen McInerne, the story is mesmerizing, and I devoured it in one setting.
Thanks to NetGalley, Linda Castillo, and the publisher for an AAC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
*received for free from netgalley for honest review* Loved it! oh i love this series so much, ive started rereading so im so happy i got a free copy of this and it was amazing!
This was an audiobook for me and was narrated by Kathleen McInerney. She was perfect for this and can’t wait to listen to more of this series. This was book 13, and a stand-alone.
I’m fascinated by the Amish and their ways so I couldn’t wait to start this. It starts right out with a mystery that will keep you guessing through the whole book.
Well developed characters with lots of suspense. Its well written. I’m sorta picking about my mysteries and this really worked for me. It’s not as harsh (R rated) as some I’ve read lately, so that another thing I enjoyed. There really wasn’t anything predictable about this.
I definitely recommend it if you like a good mystery-suspense.
Thanks Macmillan Audio via Netgalley.
I love the Kate Burkholder series. I read Gathering Secrets a few years back and have been in love with Castillo ever since!
Fallen was great I really enjoyed the audio it was quick and easy to follow along with! This book was amazing. A girl.who fled her Amish family came back and was killed her first night back!
This book will have you guessing till the end!
This is a Amish Mystery, and this is the 13th book in the Kate Burkholder series. I have read and review books 1-12.5 before picking this book up. I read the first 33% of this by kindle edition book and the last part of the book I listen to the audiobook. I have to say I love the narrator for this book's audiobook. I have to say this book is full of suspense, and this book made me think of the first book in this series. I really loved this book, but I want Kate's personal life to stop this circle. The ending of this book is the hardest one to read so far and full of suspense. This book is full of twist and turns. I was kindly provided an e-copy and e-audiobook of this book by the publisher (Minotaur Books) or author (Linda Castillo) via NetGalley, so I can give honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that. This book is schedule to be release on July 6-2021.
