Robert Brams, who practiced law for over thirty years, began a serious journey of health challenges at age 55 that would leave many feeling defeated. The husband and father of two had a car accident in December 2014 that left him with tingling sensations. A series of medical appointments and tests led to the shocking diagnosis of oligodendroglioma, a type of brain cancer. Brams, who often wrote in his career, takes us with him throughout the course of treatment to educate about brain tumors and offer hope to anyone facing obstacles and adversity. He had a strong relationship with his family, friends, neighbors and medical community who supported him through his ordeals, even when the answers and course of treatment were sometimes unclear and difficult to navigate.
The book is divided into three sections, with the first describing the medical aspects of his brain cancer. Brams' first craniotomy was in January 2015 at John Hopkins, with another at University of California at San Francisco in January 2019. He candidly describes each, along with the follow up treatments and regimens. Section Two focuses on becoming enlightened, providing glimpses in his youth, family, and career, with colorful photos included. In Section Three, which offers twelve essays on examining oneself, many through provoking and encouraging life tips were given. Topics ranged from finding your passion, to achieving peace, and finding out what's really important.
Regardless of the battles each of us face, we could all benefit from Brams' words of wisdom and eloquent writing. The candor and honesty throughout the book is remarkable, based on a tremendous and relentless ordeal of one man's battle with a brain tumor. All the while, Robert Brams remained optimistic and shared his courageous battle to help others. Readers are offered the opportunity to support the brain cancer fight at www.1MBBC.com.
