Esme is a journalist whose newly formed media company, producing true crime podcasts, is on the rise. However, her home life is far from the best, with a son who has lingering physical and emotional issues from a hit-and-run accident, and a marriage that is in shambles.

Things begin to look up when she snags an exclusive interview with Simone, a woman convicted of murdering her abusive husband. It’s been 10 years and not everyone is happy about Simone coming forward to tell her story.

As Simone tells her story, it leaves Esme wondering about her own husband and marriage. Meanwhile, Esme’s life further unravels when Michelle, her sister and business partner, is brutally attacked and left for dead, clinging to life in the ICU. Was it related to their business venture? To add to the mix, the mother-in-law from hell, Brooke, arrives to make Esme’s life even more of a disaster.

The way these various story lines intersect was propulsive and well-done. The use of the podcast script to tell the story was brilliant and added interest. There are a lot of secrets, shady behavior, and revelations to keep the reader guessing. The story had a slow start that meandered along with some detestable characters, but then things took a turn and it ended strongly. I enjoyed the underlying themes in the story. All of this makes for an easy and entertaining popcorn thriller.

The Evidence is the 2nd book of K.L.Slater I have read. After having read The Marriage and liking it a lot,  I was anticipating for another book to see how he fares in a different work. I have to say, I liked this book much more than the last. It is a wonderful psychological thriller which stays true to its genre.

The story principally follows Esme, who has been separated from her husband. She also has been trying to start a new podcast company with her sister to provide for herself and her son. And the first podcast she launches is that of a woman Simone, who has been sentenced in prison for over a decade,  for the murder of her husband, a person who was abusive towards her.

Esme's story is very similar to that of many women out there. They have a lot of things going on in their lives and they are all trying to manage all of those things in as flawless a manner as possible. And just because of that, by the time I finished reading the book,  I was left with a feeling of vindication and satisfaction on behalf of all such women.

The author manages to point out the various instances of coercive- control all people must have faced in various facets of their lives. Slater has managed to show that manipulation and controlling are not problems only faced by people who through terrible abuse; it is omnipresent and highly prevalent. There are so many twists and turns and some of them were completely unexpected for me. Slater is far becoming one of my favorite authors and I can't wait to read more works by this author.

I have gotten this book from Bookouture and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review and all the views expressed in this review are my own.

Oh...a twisty exciting psychological thriller! Absolutely loved this one by K.L Slater. It draws you in and you're right there with Esme trying to get the truth of the story. I devoured this book

This is a real rollercoaster ride with shocks around every corner. I liked Esme although she frustrated me sometimes by being so passive. As I read on, however, I discovered that this was a necessary part of the plot and that we would see her character evolve as her interviews with Simone continued. Definitely a 5 star read as I have come to expect from K.L Slater.

Wow K. L. Slater has done it again with another amazing book!
This was a little different from her other books as it featured the main character Esme Fox podcasting her interviews with Simone who was convicted of murdering her husband some time ago. During those interviews, we see that both Simone’s and Esme’s lives were similar.
Esme has a lot going on in her life, recently separating from her husband who keeps trying to come back on the excuse their son needs him, her son who was the victim of a hit and run causing lifelong problems with no one being caught, and now her sister has gone missing. Just when it cannot get any worse, when her husband is bought in for questioning, her in-laws turn up.
I really enjoyed reading this, it kept me guessing throughout several incidents and when I learned who did what, I was shocked.
K. L. Slater is one of my favourite authors, she has a way of pulling me in from early on, keeping me up late at night and leaving me on the edge of my seat for the entire read.

This is an author that I have loved from the first book I picked up of hers. Her writing skills and attention to details bring life to her stories. This book is no different. I was pulled into the story from the beginning which kept me turning pages to the end. The characters are relateable and bring the story to a new level. The twists and turns not only had me sitting on the edge of my seat but wanting to know what happened next. This is a really great book that is certainly worth the pick up. I highly recommend this book and this author.

A journalist, Esme, with her own podcast took up the case of an infamous murderer, Simone, who killed her husband, stabbing him many times while her son was in the next room.

But Esme had her own problems with a recuperating son, a separated husband, manipulating MIL, a sister who had disappeared then found beaten to an inch of her life, and workmates with secrets.

I loved how the author K. L. Slater warped Esme’s life, with so many life problems revolving around her. To try to solve each one of them got my creative juices flowing. Simone’s story was another mystery, though I solved that quite earlier on.

The writing and story concept was quite mature. I liked that genuine emotions and circumstances kept the story real. Twists were unexpected, some shocked me to rethink my theories.

But I didn’t like Esme. At all. She was quite a pushover, who hardly ever stood up for herself. That irritated me as I kept prodding her, then gave up. But the mysteries around her were kept on a tight leash by the author, making it a fast read.

Thriller by podcasts is a new concept of writing. It was well used here along with the narrative prose. Great fun.

Esme Fox, a journalist, is recording a podcast talking to Simone Fischer, a woman who killed her husband.
She's also trying to find out who attacked her sister.
It's a good novel but I struggled to link with the characters.

I was so lucky I received the kindle version to read and review and then my Hubby treated me to the audiobook as this was out before the kindle version. The Evidence by K.L. Slater Narrated by: Clare Corbett, Rachel Atkins, Yasmin Mwanza, David Holt. However, I did not rate the narrator who was the character Justine, they are off putting, the voice did not match this story. But, I enjoyed the story it was full of twists and turns with a cracking end which was brilliant!

The cover on the audiobook does not do it justice - it looked boring. Yes I know the saying "Don't just a book by its cover" However, the book/kindle cover is excellent it says Read me..........and what am I hiding from!

But I still recommend The Evidence by K.L. Slater kindle/book version but not the audiobook version.

So the book was spoilt by 2 things the cover and the second Narrator. 4 stars.

Big thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

Totally thrilling psychological thriller!I couldn't put it down and the ending blew me away! Simone Fischer is a notorious murderer, convicted of killing her husband while her young son played next door. Throughout her time in prison, Simone has kept silent but at least ,agrees to tell her story to Esme ,a young journalist who is seeking the truth. Simone is not at all what Esme expects and with each interview, another layer gets peeled away. Esme starts to see parallels in her own relationship . As she gets closer to uncovering Simone' s secrets, others are determined to prevent her . When her sister is found left for dead in the wood, Esme doesn't know who she can trust . I don't want to issue any spoilers so all I will, say is prepare to be enthralled and engrossed from start to finish! K.L.Slater never disappoints. 5*

'The Evidence' is one of those books for which I have to get some critical comments out of the way first. And on the face of it, they should be fairly sizeable because they concern the main storyline. Firstly, it didn't feel entirely original. Simone Fischer has spent 10 years in prison for violently murdering her husband in their home, and for the whole of that time hasn't said a word to anyone about what happened. That is, until journalist Esme Fox manages to secure an interview. Substitute a few small details and it felt to me that it owed a lot to The Sculptress by Minette Walters.

And secondly, there are only a limited number of ways in which a story like this can go. Either the convicted woman really did commit the murder or she didn't. And if she didn't, she's either been framed by someone else or is covering for them. I'm obviously not going to reveal the true solution here, but I will say that I guessed it quickly.

But here's the thing. I didn't care about any of this. Because the story is so beautifully told, and the psychological theme so well explored that it not only had me turning the pages as though my life depended on it, but also kept me thinking for a while after I had finished the book. How easy is it to fall into a relationship in which you're manipulated and controlled but barely even realise it? What does it take to finally make you realise, and then snap? If someone tells you such a story, can you then see parallels in your own life? And can it be that you yourself are controlling - at least to some extent - and yet aren't even aware of it?

Then there are the characters, almost all of whom are superbly drawn and relatable. Esme's sister Michelle. Her husband Owen. Her colleagues Mo and Justine. Simone's son Andrew and brother Peter. I hope it's not too much of a spoiler to say that none of these people are quite who they first appear to be. Revelations about each of them come almost throughout the book, and I absolutely never saw any of them coming. This meant that even though, as I said, I guessed the outcome of the main story, it didn't matter in the least because the book still had just the right element of shock and surprise.

You may have noticed though that I said almost all of the characters are superbly drawn and relatable. There was for me one exception, which came in the form of Esme's mother-in-law Brooke. I totally get why she needs to feature, and why she has to have the many unpleasant traits that she does. But the absence of seemingly any redeeming features made her character oddly one-dimensional. And the specific mention of the pink washing up gloves seemed like one detail too far.

However, this is nothing more than a minor quibble and since I can see that she was one of many other reviewers' favourite characters, I'm happy to let it pass by.

So to conclude: 'The Evidence' isn't quite perfect. But it's perhaps for this very reason that I absolutely loved it.

It's a little bit like my wife (who I know won't read this, so I can say what I like). She has dreadful taste in television (Love Island) and her idea of washing up is to pile everything into a bowl of hot water and leave it there. This is infuriating. But if she was any different, she just wouldn't be the woman I love.

Although I did like the book, I did find it longer than it needed to be. There were parts that could have been taken out and the audience would still get the urgency of the situation. One example would be the grocery store scene. It was also predictable in my opinion.

This is my second book by K.L.Slater, her books are full of twist and action and this didn't disappoint.

Esme is making podcast for her newly found company , the podcast with Simone Fischer women convicted with killing her husband . I loved how the book started to unravel and not everything how it seemed to.

It’s absolutely well written plot, I couldn't keep my hand of this book , every time going back to read just a little more.

Some of the main characters was super irritating( mainly that they doing something that made me uncomfortable) but I feel that the book that makes you feel anything is winning book .

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

There is not one likeable character in this book but in a good way. Everyone is a bad person except Esme, but that didnt stop me wanting to constantly give her a good shaking and a smack of cop on. I really didnt want any of them to get a happy ending. There were plenty of twists and turns and the story was very fast paced and well written.

So many twists and turns that you may go around the corner and not realize where you've been or where you're going!

Really engaging start to the book but I found it started to lag a bit as it went on. The premise was great though!

The Evidence by KL Slater
I give this book 4.25 stars

Esme sets out on a new series of interviews to get to the truth behind Simone Fischer’s high-profile murder of her husband.
She emerges after one jail visit to discover that her sister has been viciously attacked and is in a coma. Suddenly where she thought there was trust and loyalty, she slowly discovers deceit and betrayal. No one is quite who they seem - not even her closest family.
As the podcast interviews plunge deeper into revealing the unnerving psychology of a murderer,The truth - about Simone and Esme’s own family - is there, if Esme can only find it. But will her investigations reveal more than she ever wanted to know?
Another great read by an author l look out for. This was a book l didn’t want to put down.l loved the podcast interviews.
With thanks to KL Slater,Netgalley and Bookouture for my chance to read and review this book
