Jane has a rare talent to recognize people even when they are heavily disguised and her abilities have landed her a job at Logan Airport working for Homeland Security. But when Jane spies Bella Valencia roll through Logan and she confronts her about what happened to her sister Kit over a decade ago, she’s immediately fired and blacklisted. Convinced this means Bella does have more information than she’s letting on, Jane makes it her mission to infiltrate Bella’s wedding and find out the truth of her missing sister.
I liked the facial recognizing abilities Jane possessed as that wasn’t something I was familiar with. I also really enjoyed the story about the Pease family and especially their social media influencer status. I thought all the play on words surrounding their empire were really clever!
However, I didn’t really connect with Jane and the whole relationship with her boyfriend and then his advisor and his family just felt bizarre and overplayed. Some of the story dragged a bit and I wanted more from the Pease points of view.
I also really dislike when a book does an information dump for the last chapter in an attempt to close out the story. Not only did this book do that, but I felt like there were still loose ends. Perhaps I missed some clues, but some of the twists came out of nowhere and felt like they were included more for shock factor than anything else.
Overall, I enjoyed this book but didn’t love it and it isn’t one that will likely stick with me.
Thank you to Harper and NetGalley for a copy of this novel.
Overall this was a good book. Great plot, nice mystery waiting to be solved, decent characters, and interesting events. I just felt like this book did not live up to its full potential. There were a few details that felt more important than what the main character seemed to care about, and the middle of the book had a lull that I found hard to get through. The beginning hooked me! The whole super recognizer thing was fascinating and how the story just launches itself into the details and the stakes were amazing. The ending also wrapped up nicely, and might I add, like most thrillers, on the very last page/chapter. Gah! As horrible and stressful as it is, I love a story that keeps you sweating till the very end.
Though the writing style was a little different than what I am used to, I did enjoy the quick lapse over some of the more boring details and focusing more on the twisted plot.
If thrillers are your thing, and unique, twisted mysteries, this is definitely worth the read. There will be a link in my bio for this book if you are interested.
I hope this review helps. Happy Reading, and Blessed Be.

A disgraced DHS agent returns to her hometown to confront a wealthy family about the cold case disappearance of her sister.
With numerous untrustworthy characters--including the protagonist--it's difficult to figure out the culprit behind the sinister events of this thriller. Plot drives the story, although it is light on physical action. The mystery unfolds gradually through various points-of-view, and the character we're allowed to get closest to (Jane) is also the most erratic and in many ways, least reliable even though we're inside her head. The alliances and motivations are so complex, I may have to reread it to untangle them all. Overall, a good addition to an adult thriller collection and a great pick for readers who enjoy plot-driven thrillers that keep you guessing.
Jane has the remarkable ability to instantly recognize someone, anyone, known as being a “super recognizer”. While at her job working for the TSA at Logan airport, she sees the woman she believes is responsible for the disappearance and presumed death of her sister, Kit, eleven years earlier, Jane tries to “detain” Bella. The scuffle ends with Jane losing her job. Bella, meanwhile is preparing to marry Will, a very wealthy man from a family that has their fingers in every pie in Boston. She’s worried that Jane’s digging into the past will cost her everything, because Bella has some secrets she wants to remain buried…forever.
This is Sarah Strohmeyer’s first thriller, and I think she did an excellent job! This book definitely had me on the edge of my seat dying to know more and wanting to find out what was going on. This was very well written, fast paced thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat! An original and fun writing style, with fantastic character development! Cannot recommend enough, grab it, it’s one you will not want to miss. This book also surprised me in the fact that I didn’t guess any of the twists and turns. I had never heard of a “super recognizer” so I was really intrigued by the premise of this book and the skill set that “super recognizers” possess. I can’t imagine what it would be like to remember every person you’ve ever met and be able to easily identify them by their facial details. My main issue with this book is that I don’t feel like everything was completely answered. It would be great to see a follow-up. I’d love to see what happens to Jane and how she uses her gift in the future. I cannot recommend enough, grab it, it’s one you will not want to miss! I eagerly await Sarah’s next thriller! Many thanks to Netgalley, Harper Perennial and Paperbacks and Harper Paperbacks for the advanced reader’s copy.
I really loved this book and honestly would love to add it my collection I couldn’t wait to get through it and to find out what happened . Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for sending me this to read.
I’m always fascinated by books about people with outstanding natural abilities. Jane is a “super-recognizer”, and one day while working for the TSA at Logan Airport she recognizes a girl that she believes was responsible for her sister’s disappearance and supposed death.
I loved Jane’s character. She was unique and clever, and very well-written. She herself at Logan in hopes of one day spotting her sister, and was determined to use her unique ability to figure out what really happened to Kit. Jane’s chapters were very enjoyable to read. I wish she stood up for herself more with her overbearing guests! Those scenes reminded me of Lights Out In Lincolnwood, where the boss did the exact same thing of helping himself to scarce resources. I would be so mad if someone wealthier than I crashed my vacation and expected me to foot the bill and watch their children.
Unfortunately, this book had too many loose ends for me. The Pease family drama felt entirely unresolved, and I think we could have done without their POVs. I would have rather had the story focus on Jane and her snark and wit. I’m not really into the whole “it’s incest but not technically” trope--as someone with an adopted sibling, that is way too yucky for me.There is NO WAY IN HELL my brother would date my adopted sister, despite not being genetically related, and this always completely grosses me out in stories.
The main storyline of Jane and what really happened to Kit was so good (other than one pet peeve that would’ve rendered the whole book implausible), but the side plots somewhat detracted from the overall feel of the novel
It has been a long time since I read a novel by Sarah Strohmeyer but this is a completely different genre from her past stories. Very intriguing and interesting, although alot of the background went over my head with the job description Jane, the main character, has and with so many varying characters, it was hard to make heads or tails the connection. All we know is that she has lost her sister but not sure what the connection is to the wealthy people but I was reading merely for the pleasure of the story as opposed to whether the story made sense. I think I would have given it a higher rating if the ending was different.
Great mystery that takes place among the super rich in Cape Cod. Not so rich, Jane , has worked for Homeland Security until she has a break down after “recognizing,” her sister’s killer. She loses her job for her erratic behavior and then vows to hunt down the suspect who is about to be married in an extravagant wedding. There are many twists and turns and I dare you to guess the ending.
All of the drama in Do I Know You? thoroughly entertained me. I could have read a whole book about the messy and complicated dynamics of the Pease family. I was disappointed, however, by the mystery/thriller aspect of this book. It's unique and clever that Jane, a super recognizer, sees the person she believes is responsible for her sister's disappearance and murder after ten years. Jane's investigation of what happened to her sister unearths a treasure trove of secrets and lies. Ultimately, the book is so tangled with subplots that the ending is rushed and leaves many unanswered questions. As a thriller, this one wasn't for me, but it was entertaining.
Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Perennial and Paperbacks for an early copy of this book.
I absolutely tore through Do I kNow You by Sarah Strohmeyer! First of all, let me just say that I absolutely love when authors research particular jobs, settings, skills, conditions, etc that I am entirely unfamiliar with and deliver their research in a way that does not read at all like a textbook, but nevertheless when I get to the last page, I feel like I've learned quite a bit. Strohmeyer is one such author- and I was absolutely fascinated by Jane Ellison's particular skill as a "super recognizer." How I wish I had this ability!!! But beyond that, Do I Know You is an expertly crafted and compulsively readable novel of suspense. I don't want to give anything away- but it is smart and juicy and perfectly plotted! Highly recommend!!
Do I Know You? – Sarah Strohmeyer
Jane Ellison has an uncanny ability to recognize people after seeing them just once. It may have been yesterday at the grocery store, or a year ago passing on a busy sidewalk, but she never forgets faces and features. Employed by Homeland Security to do just that, Jane scrutinizes faces in the crowd at Logan International, looking for terrorists, criminals and the like.
She’s working one such shift when she recognizes a face she never thought she’d see again – a woman Jane last saw years ago with her sister Kit – before Kit disappeared without a trace, with nothing but a bloody t-shirt ever recovered. Jane’s attempts to detain the woman – and her VIP companion Will Pease – result in the loss of her career and a cease-and-desist letter from an attorney, but Jane is more determined than ever to find out what happened to her sister that fateful night so long ago.
Meanwhile, at the ‘Love & Pease’ family compound in Cape Cod, Will Pease has returned home with the announcement that he intends to marry his adoptive sister Bella, much to the dismay of his family – especially his stepmother, Eve, who had yearned to see her daughter brought into the fold as Will’s wife. As plans for the extravagant wedding begin, it becomes apparent that this wedding bodes much more than the joining of a couple.
Jane, still determined to get to Bella to learn what she can of her sister’s disappearance, manages to find a rental on Cape Cod near the Pease compound. As she and her boyfriend Erik settle in, they’re joined by some colleagues of Erik’s, a husband and wife psychology duo, who seem to move right in and make themselves at home.
As I sit here and try to complete this review, I’m having difficulty, because there are so many tangents and undercurrents running through this novel, even as Jane seeks closure on Kit’s disappearance. From the Pease family’s unusual characters, to pre-nups, an aging star’s death, family stock options, entrapment, absolutely nothing and no one is as it may seems.
Filled with intrigue, mystery, red-herrings and ‘who-dun-it’ suspense, this is one hell of a read….having finished it, I’m very tempted to go back and re-read it, with my new perspective of the characters.
I received this book as an Advance Reader Copy from #Netgalley & Harper Paperbacks, in exchange for an objective review.
With Jane’s special ability as a super recognizer, she works as a Homeland Security agent at Logan Airport, averting disasters by identifying passengers who pose threats. When she happens to come across a VIP and his fiancé, Isabelle, the woman she recognizes wanted for a felony murder, she has them detained. The felony murder happens to be of Jane’s sister that took place 11 years ago.
The problem is that VIP Will Pease comes from a powerful and wealthy family, and they’re released before Jane can corner Isabella for answers. Jane’s sister Kit had ties to Will and even worked as his family’s party the night she disappeared. Now that Jane has Bella back in her sights, she won’t let the truth slip from her fingers this time.
I think I counted at least five schemes, then I gave up because it wasn’t even ten chapters into the book. This book may qualify for how many schemes (not decent twists) can be shoved into one thriller. The idea of Jane using her special ability to solve her sister’s murder is fresh and clever. The writing is exciting and the pacing is good.
However, this book could’ve been told without all the unnecessary loose end schemes and the Pease storyline. Umm, one simple phone call would’ve cleared up years of anguish for Jane and avoided everything that unfolded. Therefore, the entire story just isn’t plausible, which is too bad because I really enjoyed Jane’s sarcastic voice and her sharp analytical skills. Jane began as a strong character (before doubting herself), and I could picture an entire thrilling series play out with her intriguing skills, catching killers and international criminals.
It seemed the author was unsure what direction to take this thriller, so the kitchen sink was thrown in. Why the need for the mental health issues and the unreliable storyteller? It was so unnecessary and added nothing. Jane doubting her own abilities after spying the subway client engaging in espionage was enough of a wink to the readers.
Things go downhill fast when Jane and her boyfriend rent the beach house to be closer to the Pease family. The Pease wedding is approaching, so of course, more schemes (not twists!) appear under the big top. Erik’s guests crashing for the week could’ve been the bases for the entire book. The guests constant interference while Jane investigated Kit’s disappearance, and her boyfriend’s odd behavior was more interesting than the silly Pease family drama.
The book also delivers major cringe factors. The youngest Pease son not only has Ann going affair with his stepsister, but he goes on to marry his adopted sister. Yes, you read that correctly. And no I don’t care if he spent most of his time in boarding schools, they were all raised together! Hard sell because they’re FAMILY! And it all has to do with gaining company shares to be in control of their empire. Puke! (So add at least 3 more schemes to the clown car!) And the multiple types of gaslighting from those closest to Jane? How about Shelia using her own young daughter as a pawn? What the heck? (Yes, another totally oddball scheme thrown in!)
It’s all too much to juggle and so unnecessary when there was enough material for a decent book, and possible series, without the three ring circus. That being said, this was a burning plane crashing into an exploding train, falling into the ocean, and you still can’t pull your eyes away from the high entertainment factor, which just may be the author’s best scheme yet.
Thank you NetGalley and HarperCollins Publishers for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you to the author, publisher and Net Galley for providing a free ebook ARC copy of this title in exchange for my review.
Sarah Strohmeyer is a new author to me, and in looking at her list of published titles, it seems as though this is a new genre for her as well. Overall I enjoyed the book - it kept me guessing and turning the pages, but it also felt rushed and left me with a lot of questions and story lines with loose ends. The last few chapters were a bit of an overload with information and twists and turns. I think I would have enjoyed the book more overall with a few less twists and a cleaner ending.
Still, I will keep her on my list of authors to check out.
Jane Ellison’s skill as a super recognizer makes her valuable to Homeland Security. She works undercover at Logan Airport, scanning the faces of arrivals in search of potential terrorists as well as VIPs and other categories of interest to DHS. She has the ability to recognize a particular face regardless of attempts to disguise their identity, and extensive training in forensic facial analysis. And always see searches for the face of her sister Kit, who disappeared years ago from a Cape Cod beach.
She’s caught several bad guys, and her career seems solid, until the day she spots a woman who she believes murdered her sister Kit years ago. Jane accosts Bella Valencia in the middle of the airport, ending her career with DHS and leaving many to doubt her sanity.
Bella was adopted from a Colombian orphanage by the wealthy Pease family when she was eight. By all accounts, she has grown up to be as principled and altruistic as the rest of the family. She devotes her time and money to a nonprofit for at-risk girls in her home country, but Jane is positive she knows what happened to Kit that night. After Jane’s attack, the Pease family puts a restraining order on her, but she finds a way around that and finally gets her wish one dark night in Cape Cod, where it all started.
The suspense builds to an almost unbearable level. Undercurrents in the story keep readers on their toes as they try to unravel the intricate plot, but chances are the twist at the end leave them reeling, and totally satisfied. Ms. Strohmeyer has created a masterpiece of psychological suspense. Highly recommended.
This novel is a middling thriller. It is has a plot device that doesn't necessarily carry through the book. But it is a decent mystery novel involving the mysterious disappearance of the main characters sister. I felt the ending of the book didn't hold up - hence the 3 star rating.
So grateful for a arc. I loved the book cover and the premise. The idea of someone who recognizes faces for years was pretty niche. Enjoying the suspense of the book
I received an advanced copy of this book through NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review. I had requested this ARC several months ago, and was just approved last week with a release date of 11/30/21. I usually prefer to have more time, especially as it messed with my reading plans, but I actually really enjoyed most of the book.
While Do I Know You doesn't read like a typical missing girl mystery trope, the clever and sarcastic tone imbued in main character Jane was refreshing and enjoyable. Despite Jane's sister Kit going missing 1 summer before college, Jane managed to finish college and work for Homeland Security due to her "super recognition skills ". Jane works at Logan Airport in Boston and is quite skilled at recognizing faces. It is Christmas time and Jane is planning to celebrate with her boyfriend, a research psychiatrist. Then Jane recognizes Bella Valencia, a woman she remembered from that summer on the Cape when her sister went missing and was likely one of the last to see Kit alive. Except Bella is hiding the events of that night or that she was even there.
Bella has been adopted by the wealthy Pease family, after her parents were killed in Bogota. She is poised to marry Will , one of the sons- meaning she is marrying her *stepbrother*. The Pease family business is a wellness brand that sells overpriced shlock like candles, blankets and items emphasizing wellness and harmony. The stepmother Eve, a former soap opera actress hopes her daughter Megan will marry Will, since they've had a thing- and yes Megan is also Will's stepsister. There's also an older brother and sister. One negative thing is there were just too many characters to set straight. There's Jake and Dani, Erik the boyfriend, etc. Then there's Queenie, who lives on the estate as a godmother of Megan.
So Jane is fired from DHS for her accusation against Bella, finds some on / off side gig thanks to her super recognition skills and plots to find the truth. 6 -7 months later, it is summer on the Cape and Jane finds a rental to get closer to the Pease family and find the truth about her sister Kit. Her late mother's police chief boyfriend warns Jane to stay away from the Cape preceding the wedding, and Erik invites his advisor Dave and his wife Sheila and their 2 young kids to stay in the tiny rental. Somehow Jane gets pulled in as au pair and Sheila tries to get Jane to remember blocked memories from the night Kit went missing. What happens when Jane is afraid she's losing her sanity, as she gets closer to the truth? I enjoyed this part of the book more than Eve or even Bella's points of view. The truth was more bizarre and surprising that I could not have guessed the ending. However some things seemed a little out there and convoluted, as other readers opined. Despite that flaw & too many characters to keep track of, I enjoyed this book. The wry, sarcastic humor worked for me. I only wish there was more closure related to Jane's job and her reputation. 4/5☆
WOW!!! This book takes me back to a few years ago when I would lose myself in a great thrilling blockbuster of a novel. Back then, it seemed most stories were about a daring detective like male lead who was up against the odds. The story features a heroine and is more a psychological thriller with events and descriptions that were larger than life.
The story features. Jane Ellison, a “super recognizer” able to identify strangers by facial details. This talent is rare and she has been employed by Homeland Security. In her HS role, she sees someone that she recognizes from her previously life, someone who knows what happened to her sister Kit. This woman is an heiress that has a very small social media footprint and is on her way to fantastically large private wedding on the island Jane grew up on.
That summary should give you a taste of the BIG Blockbustery- type adventure where some of your belief needs to be suspended but you are happy to do so because the story is so engaging! I would have liked a bit more at the end to understand what happened to some of the least liked characters, but I enjoyed the ride immensely and you will too! #NetGalley #DoIKnowYou
The prolific Sarah Strohmeyer is well known for her women's fiction standalones, light-hearted cozy mysteries, and YA novels. This is her first psychological thriller, and she has hit it out of the park!
In first-person chapters, Jane introduces herself as a Homeland Security employee, using her "super recognizer" and forensic facial analysis skills to identify even disguised criminals so they can be apprehended by law enforcement. But she loses her job in an instant at an airport when she loudly confronts a woman she is certain is responsible for the disappearance of her own older sister one fateful summer years ago. The woman is an adopted daughter in the prominent but dysfunctional Pease family, known for their wellness and lifestyle empire, Love & Pease.
Jane's live-in lover, as well as her father and her late mother's boyfriend, a police chief, all implore her to give up on her quest to find out what happened to her sister and who was responsible--they are afraid Jane will again have a mental breakdown and will be victimized by the vindictive Pease family. As the story of that family is told in alternating chapters, along with Jane's relentless efforts to find the truth, the tension continues to ratchet up to a fever pitch. Kudos to the author for successfully delivering a convoluted and compelling plot.
This may be a standalone, but I wanted to know more about Jane's unusual skills and would love to see her apply them to solve another mystery in the future.
My thanks to NetGalley and to Harper Perennial and Paperbacks for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
Combining magnetic, wise-cracking narration and a skillfully layered plot, Do I Know You? is a gripping psychological thriller and tale of redemption that reveals the power of a sister’s love.
Review of Do I Know You? by Sarah Strohmeyer
A fabulous read. Expect the unexpected as it is packed with suspense, twists, glamour and humor. You will be gripped from the first page until the last one.
