Thank you so much William Morrow publishing and Netgalley for providing me with this e-ARC in exchange for an honest review! This book is out June 15th and any thriller lovers out there won’t want to miss it!
This is my first Taylor Adams book and it did not disappoint! I’m excited to read all of his books now! Especially No Exit, which I hope to get to this month!
Lena’s sister, Cambry, drives to a remote bridge in Montana one day and jumps to her death, leaving behind a very vague suicide note. Lena doesn’t believe this whatsoever and suspects murder. What truly happened that day? She owes it to her sister to find out.
This story was definitely confusing at first as you have to get a hang of the writing style. Constantly switching POV’s and alternating between past and present, as well as including journal entries/blog posts. But the author switches from bold font , to normal font, to italicized font which makes it easy to grasp after a few chapters!
This was packed with twists, suspense, mystery and gory details. The last 25% of the book I could not put down. My adrenaline was going and my heart was definitely pumping! Definitely recommend for any thriller / horror lovers out there!
June sixth. The day Cambry allegedly commits suicide. Her twin sister Lena strongly believes “based on their cellular level bond” that her sister would NEVER kill herself. Now she just has to prove it.
We are taken to the scene of her death, an eerie, desolate back road known as Hairpin Bridge, as Lena investigates what really happened on that night. She’s found some discrepancies in the police reports and she won’t rest until she uncovers the truth about how her twin sister REALLY died. She schedules a meeting with Ray Raycevic, the police officer that found her sister’s body because she wants to hear all the details from him. Only Lena knows more about him and that night then he’s revealing. She’s on a mission for vengeance.
We also get a glimpse into Cambry’s last night alive; she give us her account of the fateful events that led to her death on that dreadful night of June sixth. I LOVED this part of it so much! We are taken through the heart pounding stand-off between Cambry and officer Ray. And just when you thought it was getting GOOD, it’s gets even BETTER (well, not for Cambry 😬 but as the reader, I was HOOKED)!
It’s adrenaline pumping and action packed from the start. The twists start as early as CHAPTER 2 so I was gripped, reading for hours past my bedtime. The writing was so descriptive that I felt I was there. It’s atmospheric and so cleverly detailed. The twists keep on coming but then become a little more predictable nearing the end.
If you loved No Exit (also by Taylor Adams) you’ll LOVE this fast-paced thriller too! 4.5 ⭐️
⚠️: This novel is graphic and gore-filled so if your squeamish, you’ve been warned!
Thank you @netgalley @williammorrowbooks for this arc!
I was a huge fan of No Exit, so when I heard Taylor Adams was releasing a new book I knew I had to check it out. Luckily for me, NetGalley has this book available to read now. Once I picked it up, it was hard to stop. Adams knows how to hook you with the suspense. All the twists and turns kept me on the edge of my seat. If you are looking for a fast-paced, can’t-put-downable thriller, this book is for you.
Hairpin Bridge was deemed to be haunted and was also referred to as The Suicide Bridge. It’s the bridge that Lena’s twin sister, Cambry supposedly committed suicide off of. Lena isn’t convinced her sister could do such a thing, so she drives to meet with the state patrolman who found Cambry deceased. Lena has many questions....however the more answers she gets, the more she believes that something isn’t right with the patrolman’s story and is convinced he is responsible for her death.
This is a much anticipated read given the likeness of No Exit by Taylor Adams. Let me start by saying I thought this book was incredibly difficult to follow. I actually started out liking the book but then things fell flat. It’s told from different POVs and different time periods so to put the book down and then pick it back up, I had to try and discern where I left off with whom and where. I do have to say that for the events to have happened so quickly with Cambry and then what Lena goes through for her revenge, it all seems very incredulous, even the ending is a far stretch. Some people might say that all of these aspects are the making of a good thriller, but for me it just didn’t work. Some people will love this book, and others will fall into probably an unpopular category like myself. If you like the show Big Sky, then this book is probably for you given striking similarities between the two...taking place in Montana and involving a truck driver/cop duo. All opinions are purely my own.
I had to wait awhile before writing this review so I could think about the book. To say this book was edge of your seat is a total understatement, make sure to clear your day before you start this book! Lena has not always been close to her twin Cambry, but still has a strong connection. When Cambry ends up dead from suicide under mysterious circumstances, Lena knows that isn’t the whole story. As Lena blogs about her sisters end and sets out to investigate she knows she is in a dangerous situation, she just doesn’t realize how dangerous. As with this authors first book “No Exit,” it is impossible to put down. Excellent psychological thriller, would give way more than 5 stars if possible.
I absolutely adored No Exit by Taylor Adams, so I was looking forward to this new release by her. Unfortunately, I found the plot to be too dull and the characters didn't feel real.
This is the second Taylor Adams book I have read, No Exit was one of my favorite books when I read it. Lena Nguyen's twin sister Cambrey has committed suicide by jumping from an isolated bridge (nicknamed suicide bridge by locals), at least that's the official story. Lena has arranged to meet with the officer who found the body in an effort to find closure, she can't believe her sister would have ended her life and has questions she's looking for the answer for. The story is told through blog posts by Lena and a 'story' she wrote on her vision of how her sister lived her last days and Lena's meeting with the officer. Cambrey had left home with a boyfriend and travelled across the States, Cambrey is a free spirit, going where ever she's moved to. The officer that Lena meets with is Raymond Raycevic, the same officer we find out that had also encountered Cambrey before she had jumped from the bridge, he was in fact involved in a car chase with her. The details of Cambrey's past are slowly revealed, and eventually we find out that there this was not just a suicide. The story moves for the most part at a brisk pace, I found the middle dragged a bit for me, but once the reveals start happening, the pages could not be turned fast enough. Highly recommended. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC.
I am miserable from a cold or sinus issues. I can't properly construe what I should say regarding this book.
It is a story fraught with a sadness undertone. It is gripping. It is jarring. It is twisted. It keeps you reading. It will leave you feeling unsettled.
Thank you to Netgalley, Taylor Adams and Joffee Books for the advanced readers copy.
Taylor Adam's previous book, No Exit, got tons of great reviews, so even though I didn't love that one, I thought I would try his new one, Hairpin Bridge. I think I can say that I won't be reading anymore of Adam's books. Hairpin Bridge was a wild ride, but one that I was never fully invested in. I read this book on my phone and caught myself many times leaving the Netgalley app to go on social media instead of continuing to read. Like No Exit, this book was very gory, which is something I don't love in thrillers. As well, most of Hairpin Bridge's plot lines revolved around a car chase scene and gun fight scene - two things I also don't love. This book was short, which I did like, because if it had been much longer I think the plot lines would have been even more ridiculous. There were many parts of this book that I rolled my eyes about and just seemed unnecessary (the boa constrictor??). So, I wouldn't completely write this book off, especially if you liked No Exit, but if gory, gun fight, car chase thrillers aren't for you, then I wouldn't recommend it.
While I enjoyed some of this book, it didn’t really hit the mark for me. I felt like I was thrown into the middle of a book and was thrown back and forth throughout the whole thing. I personally didn’t really like the story.
Hairpin Bridge by Taylor Adams
Publication Date: June 15, 2021
Having never read any other book by Taylor Adams, I wasn't sure what to expect. Hairpin Bridge was a hit for me. I really enjoyed this extremely fast-paced, thriller that you won't be able to put down. It is easy to tell that Taylor Adams is extremely talented in grabbing the readers' attention and not letting it go. Hairpin Bridge had me hooked from the first chapter.
The story follows our main character, Lena, on her mission to discover the truth about her sister's apparent suicide. Lena's investigation leads her to Raymond Ravcevik, the highway patrol who found her sister, Cambry, at the scene. As Lena begins trying to unravel her sister's final night, she begins to realize not everything is as it seems.
Hairpin Bridge is told through Lena's point of view, Lena's old blog posts. and Lana's perspective of past events from Cambry's point of view. The setting takes place mostly on the bridge. Hairpin Bridge captures you and keeps you guessing every second with the combination of the multiple perspectives and realizing the entire story takes place in about 4 hours. I love the determination and fight in Lena.
I definitely will be picking up other books by Taylor Adams. My only warning for this book is to try to start it when you can do nothing but read until it's finished. You won't want to put it down.
Thanks to William Morrow and NetGalley for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest opinions.
This was a really great, action-packed book about revenge and I enjoyed it a lot!
Lena doesn't believe her sister committed suicide by jumping off a bridge so she's off to Montana to meet the Officer who found and reported her body but she also suspects him of being involved in her sister's murder.
This was a twisty story that took me a while to get into but in the end it was worth the read. I would highly recommend this for anyone who likes books set in a small time frame and at an isolated setting as the entire book takes place on Hairpin Bridge.
Cambry Nguyen jumped from Hairpin Bridge to purposely end her life ... or at least that’s the official story. Lena, Cambry’s twin sister isn’t buying it. Lena visits the same bridge and interviews the officer who found her sisters body in an attempt to find out what really happened.
Hairpin Bridge is an edge of your seat thriller that reads like an action movie. For the most part, I enjoyed the story. It kept me intrigued, wasn’t boring at all and had a great twisted plot. The only thing that I felt detracted from this being a perfect thriller was the odd flashback scenes told from Cambry’s point of view but based on what her sister “thought” happened. Overall, good solid thriller.
Identical twin sisters who don't really know each other, one dies unexpectedly. The officer says it is a suicide, but the other goes on her own to find the truth as to what happened to her sister.
A wildfire is brewing on the horizon as the truth gets closer, along with a discovery of the truth about a decade worth of serial killer activity.
Dull
Twenty four year old Cambry was on a year long odyssey across America when Highway patrolman Raymond found her dead beneath Hairspin Bridge, also called Suicide Bridge. Cambry's identical twin, Lena, doesn't believe the story of her sister' s suicide. She drives from Seattle to Montana to reveal the truth. Patrolman Ray reluctantly leads Lena to the bridge and starts answering her questions about her sister' s death. Why did Ray pull Cambry over for speeding only an hour before her death? Why did Cambry write a strange message to her twin?
The book is written in a varied way. There are passages from the book Lena is writing about her sister, posts from Lena' s blog and third-person narratives.
I was a bit disappointed by the book. There wasn' t much change - it was always Lena and Ray and nothing else. I found it somewhat boring. I didn' t feel any suspense.
That was intense! Edge of your seat and nail biting stuff. Three months after her twin sister Cambry apparently threw herself off Hairpin Bridge, to plunge to her death 200 ft below, 24 year old Lena Nguyen is in Montana to find out what really happened. Lena and Cambry were very different people and were not particularly close but Lena feels she somehow let her sister down and she is positive that she would not have killed herself. There is no mobile (cell) reception at the bridge but Cambry’s last sms to Lena was sent the day after she died as the phone in her pocket found reception on the way to the morgue. How it survived the fall is anyone’s guess. The message mentioned Officer Raycevic, a Montana state trooper so Lena has a starting point.
Lena is a smart cookie and leaves nothing to chance. She has referenced all the relevant paperwork relating to her sister’s death and is convinced that Raycevic killed her and that he also sent the message (which may explain how the phone survived). The message is definitely not in Cambry’s ‘voice’. Lena’s plan is to get Raycevic to take her to the bridge - ostensibly to just see where her sister died as some of closure but she actually plans to elicit and record his confession. She has also made some other preparations. This is one smart and crazy brave lady. Lena does not know if she will survive the day but she is fully committed to her plan.
The story is told from the POV of Lena in the third person, excerpts from her blog post and excerpts from a story she is writing about what she thinks happened to Cambry and most of the action takes place on or around the bridge. And what an epic piece of action it is - Die Hard on steroids! Raycevic insists he didn’t throw Cambry off the bridge and tells Lena some things that make her question her assumptions. What really happened? I really don’t want to say more as it is better to go in cold. Thriller and action fans will be delighted with this dark and fast paced story. There is much, much more involved than a simple fall from a bridge! I received an advance review copy for free from Netgalley, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Sadly, it didn't click with me, but hopefully it will for someone else. :)
The premise is rather simple: Lena, whose twin sister Cambrey committed suicide by jumping of the Hairpin Bridge, is confronting a police officer who found her body at the same spot because she is certain her sister is murdered and policeman had something to do with it. Using a weird narrating combination of telling story in real time from Lena's point of view told in third person, Lena's blog posts to her readers and excerpts from Lena's book about what she thinks happened to her sister, this story tries to maintain suspense through many twists, couple of people in a remote place setting and a shooting standoff. It may sound confusing, but it was more unnecessary, in my opinion. There is a different font for different narrations, but each of them leading to a resolution and if you care for what happens at the end, then this narrative device may serve a better experience.
So, I wasn't confused but I struggled to see what was the point of the story in Hairpin Bridge. The reason for that is mostly because there was a lot of telling: what someone is feeling, what kind of person some is- that someone is introvert, that someone is a psychopath-without actually showing those persons being one way or another. This is the main reason I failed to connect with main character Lena and thus, never truly bought her motivation for anything she is doing in this book. Like, training rigorously and uprooting your whole life, for example. Same goes for Ray, because his explanation for why he was doing what he was doing was rather nonsensical considering the situation.
I am not bothered by over the top, unrealistic plot in thriller novels because sometimes I enjoy seeing how will the crazy play out, but I wish this one was more gripping or fun.
Just overall forgettable.
After reading No Exit by Taylor Adams, I was so excited to hear he was coming out with another book. I absolutely loved No Exit, couldn’t put it down. This one, Hairpin Bridge not so much. It was just ok for me. Some of the scenes were repetitive and the twists were not that great.
Hairpin Bridge takes place over the course of a few hours. Our protagonist Lena Nguyen is searching for the truth about what happened to her twin sister. Retracing her sisters steps, she finds herself in the middle of a dangerous cat and mouse game with a couple unsavory characters.
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC.
OMG! Talk about an edge of your seat thriller with enough adrenaline to keep you going for a while. I didn’t want to put this one down but my poor eyes begged for breaks. I believe I could have read it cover to cover. I’m still taking deep breaths.
An amazing main character, a wonderful storyline and enough action to suit even the most die hard fans, this one just keeps giving. Pull those harness straps tight and recheck those seatbelts. You are in for a thrill ride!
Hairpin Bridge was written by the author of No Exit. This story takes place over a few hours and is meant to be a harrowing nail-biter but fell short. The story alternates between the day Lena meets with Raycevic through the point of view of her blog, what is currently happening on the bridge, and the novel Lena is writing titled “Cambry’s Story” where she tells us what happened to Cambry; mostly through speculation. After finishing the book I realize not much happened. Most of the book was either the blog or “Cambry’s Story” chapters. There’s a major twist that wasn’t shocking, more of an “ok…?” I didn’t connect to Lena so I didn’t care what happened to her. I wouldn’t say it was an entertaining read either so if you skip this one, you’re not missing out.
