What can I say about Aurora's End other then holy cow?!
Kaufman and Kristoff have done it again. From a murderous AI that we all fell in love with to a group of hero's we didn't know we needed, they have created another series that I love.
I cried happy, sad, and funny tears with this book. Just this one, not including the other two that came before it. I loved the way that the story ended, do I think it was slightly anticlimactic? Yes, but it was also one of the best books I've read all year, and the last chapter had me in tears in the best of ways.
Aurora's end is the final installment in this trilogy.
I read it and I think it has way too many subplots. And the things about those subplots is that they are not executed properly, hence leaving us readers hanging just as the chapter comes to an end.
I found myself skipping a lotta pages and moving on to the end. Kal and Aurora had the worse subplot to say at least. The biggest disappointment I find is with the ending. Read it and youll come to know.
*Thanks Netgalley for the ARC*
Squad 312 forever.
This series and these characters will live in my mind and in my heart for the rest of my life. The only reason I didn't read it IMMEDIATELY after it came out was because I had wanted to re-read Aurora Burning and have everything FRESH in my mind. I remembered how it ended, I remembered screaming at my Kindle and thinking it was going to put me into premature labor (lol jk) but remembering the last few pages are a lot different than being fully re-immersed into that world and I am SO glad I waited to start this one.
The first thing you need to know about this book, like the tagline says, is that it's...ABOUT TIME. Sure, yeah, you could easily take that as "it's about time we are getting our hands on this damn book because I have been DYING from that cliffhanger from book 2" BUT it is straight up ABOUT TIME. And right when I found that out, I was in. I was ALLLLLLLLLLL in. Time travel has always been my jam. Trying to figure out if time is a loop, if it's fixed, if we have to worry about a multiverse of dimensions....it's all a mindf**k that I welcome eagerly. The next bit will feature mild spoilers so proceed with caution.
Our heroes are split into three groups here. Fin, Scarlett, and Zila have been blasted into the past and are forced to live the same day with a woman from that time (Nari) over and over and OVER.
Tyler starts with Saedii post-battle and then after something triggers a very intense and alarming vision, continues on to warn the Aurora Academy that the Ra'haam are coming for them.
Auri, Kal, and Caersan are blasted into a VERY bleak future and need to rush to fix the Weapon or order to prevent the very Ra'haam infested future they were sent to. When I say it's dark--I mean it. These chapters hurt the most BY FAR.
Even though the squad had been split up, it honestly didn't feel that way. They were all trying their best to get back to one another to what they keep trying to do best--save the world. They are all constantly on each other's minds and there is no doubt the lengths each would go in order to be reunited. Plot wise I think that's just about all I can talk about with giving away HUGE spoilers that had me screaming, crying, laughing...basically experiencing the full range of human emotion.
I was reminded throughout this entire book, but especially at the end, that this series and these characters are so special because of their love for one another. They are each other's CHOSEN and found family and not even centuries of time and zillions of lightyears is going to change that. Without going into any detail their love for one another saved each other and the entire galaxy and that is what is going to stick with me the most.
Squad 312, it has been a pleasure and an honor. You are all crazy and amazing and I thank you each for your service to the galaxy and to us readers. You'll forever have a crazed fan in me.
Huge thanks to Knopf Books For Young Readers and NetGalley for allowing me to read an eARC of this in exchange for my honest opinion.♥
Am I being harsh? Maybe. But Aurora's End was not their best work IMO. I know they can do better, I mean they wrote Illuminae.
I was definitely more interested in the first half of the book than the second. The final battle, to me, was strange and a bit of a let down. I was left disappointed and frankly skimming some paragraphs. I did enjoy the parts that were "out of time" so to speak, but only because it is a neat idea to toy with. If I think too much about it the entire thing would collapse. I still felt Aurora was bland, the elf guy was boring, and Tyler was so so (he kept mentioning the damn dimples, WE GET IT). On the bright side we were finally introduced to the lone gay couple in this galaxy, so yay for inclusivity (also they were hella cute and I was shipping them hard).
I really thought that after Illuminae the authors could only come up with amazing stuff, but this entire series felt like it was written before Illuminae, as if it were their first project. It felt very commercial and not interesting or original. I thought after the second book things had improved for the better, but Aurora's End was the low point of the bell curve. I've definitely read better sci-fi space opera in YA, like Red Rising, Insignia, or The Diabolic.
I will not get my hopes up with any future series. I'll just go re-read Illuminae.
PS; Every time I read about the big bad I kept thinking of Yivo from Futurama. If you know, you know.
4.5 Stars!
Aurora’s End is the finale to the Aurora Cycle trilogy, and I can honestly say I’m impressed with the entire series. There aren’t very many YA series out there that I want to pick up and reread, but this series is one of them! Each time I pick up one of these books, I end up rating it higher than my original read through rating. Plus, there isn’t a lot of YA Sci-fi out there, and I think kids will LOVE this series and love the characters!
I originally rounded my 4.5 rating down to a 4, but it’s been a few weeks since I’ve read this book, and I can honestly say I already miss these characters. Plus, I shed some tears, so any YA book that can make that happen deserves to be rounded up a bit. The last 20% of the book was especially moving and the ending was very well done!
This book follows all the character point of views, but Zila, Fin, and Scarlet are in the past; Auri and Kal are in the future; and Tyler is in the present day. It was a bit jarring at first trying to put the stories together because not only were we jumping into different points of view, but we were also spanning hundreds of years in between, but after everything comes together at the end…it was pretty close to perfection. And that’s saying quite a bit for me, because I really don’t like time travel stories.
In the past, Zila, Scarlett, and Fin find themselves in a time loop that seems to be getting shorter and shorter each time they experience it. They meet a new character named Nari who becomes a very important character in this book. In the future plot line, Auri and Kal gets a glimpse of what could happen if they don’t stop the Ra’haam and the Starslayer from destroying the universe. And in the present day, we follow Tyler and Saedii as they prepare to fight the Ra’haam.
I think the reason I originally rounded this book down to a 4-star rating is because this was the first book in the series where I didn’t enjoy one of the points of view/story arcs. With the other two books, I couldn’t wait to get back into the point of view of all of the characters, but with this book, I very much enjoyed Fin, Scarlett, and Zila’s story line much better than the other two. Auri and Kal’s was my next favorite, and Tyler in the present day just didn’t stick with me very much. I still love all the characters, and I missed them interacting as a squad, but the ending was great.
I would highly recommend this series to my students! I would even reread it with them! I already miss this squad so much!
Aurora's End picks up after that mother of all cliffhangers with which Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff left us at the end of book two of The Aurora Cycle. You would think this means relief or, at the very least, a few answers. In true Kaufman/Kristoff fashion, however, the story takes off into three widely varying directions that play with your understanding of time and space with twists that bend the mind and mess with your expectations. Resolutions eventually abound but not without a lot of suspense, heartbreak, and outstanding action.
As one of the three books I most anticipated releasing this year, Aurora's End in no way disappoints. Through the end, the authors remain true to the squad's characters as they first presented them in book one, while making room for the growth each squad member needs to achieve for their mission to succeed. This character growth occurs organically, never forced or untrue to the characters.
I am sad to leave Squad 312 because each of them is so damn fabulous. Picking one character to be your favorite is like picking a favorite child or the best chocolate in a chocolate factory. Thankfully, their arcs as well the main story arc end in such a satisfying manner that I closed the book knowing that Ms. Kaufman and Mr. Kristoff provided gratifying endings for all and sufficiently justified endings for those who might have run afoul of their pen.
The finale is every bit as exciting and heartbreaking as I expected it to be. At the same time, the lessons learned by Aurora and the rest of the squad, as well as the final lesson Aurora learns about the enemy, are perfection. As we discovered in the first two books, some of those lessons are not easy ones to learn. However, Aurora's End ends with notes of poignancy, hope, and love, emotions I was not expecting given everything the squad overcomes. Yet, I can think of no better ending to such an emotional roller coaster of a series. Now, we wait to see what Ms. Kaufman and Mr. Kristoff decide to co-write next.
The ending to the Aurora Cycle trilogy was fine. I've lost a lot of respect for this author duo and only read the book because I wanted to know how it wrapped up. I really think they did Scarlett so dirty every time she was on the page, if I had to read one more sentence about her thicc body not fitting in a space suit i was about to lose it. Also thank goodness Zila actually got to develop a personality in this book because in the first two she was basically seen and not heard. and surprise she's gay! which I love because same! but again, don't think any of the female characters were handled correctly.
** spoiler alert **
All of it was great until it was too easy and everyone lived happily ever after, even some of the bad guys. You know what I take back the "some of the bad guys" part because ALL the bad guys lived HEA!!! I woulld have much preferred the future where Ty was left alone to fight the Ra'haam. That would have been a much more sensible ending but NOOOOOOooooooo the books amazingness falls flat when Auri decided to do the one thing, THE ONE THING, we've been trying to make sure didn't happen!!!!!!!! ITS MOCKINGJAY ALL OVER AGAIN!!!!!!! And then .1 second after she cuts all ties (LITERALLY) with everyone, everything, and her Be'shmai she goes and says nah y'all great but I'm leaving this collective byyyyeeeeeee. 🙄 LIKE WHAT WAS EVEN THE POINT!!!!! We lost so much just so she could join the Ra'haam, leave them and then LET THEM ROAM FREE!!!!!
Also THE COVER!!!!!!!! Let's talk about the beautiful cover that shouldn't have been. I love Fin and I was so excited that he was picked for the cover and I will defend him when people say he looks weird or ugly but after reading the book the choice makes no sense. Quite frankly Fin was so under utilized the whole book. Not that I don't love that he got together with Scar but his storyline just became I'm making out with Scarlet and that's all I'm good for. Now the person, nae, Goddess that should've been on the cover was robbed!!!! ZILA THE QUEEN OF EVERY DIMMENSION / TIME STREAM was robbed of her rightful spot on this cover!!! This whole story would be nothing without!!!! She is and will always be the reason why we went on this wonderful yet anticlimactic ending adventure!!! Out of all the characters in this book she has the most important storyline and sadly she wasn't given the right amount of chapters.
*le sigh*
Anyway I digress.
Was it the ending I was hoping for? No
Would I like a redo? Yes
Do I have more issues with this book? Absolutely
Is this review all over the place and not making any sense? Sure
Do I still love this series? Pending...
This was possibly one of my favorite series conclusions ever!! I absolutely loved how they wrapped up these books. I will admit, the second book was my least favorite so I was a little hesitant going into this one but was completely captivated and ALL THE FEELS. Really, writers should take note- THIS IS HOW YOU END A SERIES. Really, that's all I can say. I don't want to go into details since they'd all be spoilery. Just, if you have read these books read Aurora's End. If you haven't read this series- DO IT.
Aurora's End is a thrilling conclusion to a very good science fiction trilogy. It includes all of the best tropes of science fiction, some of fantasy, and has just enough of a mix between the two genres to be original and fun. It's one of the most fun trilogies I've read in a while.
When the odds are stacked against them, crew 312 doesn't give up and I love that so much about them. Even flung through space and time, they don't stop trying to save the universe and each other.
ok, first off, i have *got* to stop starting series when they aren't finished. i am just not the same reader as i was many, many, many moons ago, my memory isn't the same, nor is my taste in books.
i remember enjoying book 1 and 2 in this series, and i remembered enough to understand things in this book, not enough to be fully invested, but too much to reread the previous books (and no real desire to, to be honest).
anyway. this book. i did a mix of reading and listening, which helped. i admit, a lot of it went over my head, like the intricacies of how everything worked and the things they needed to do.
overall, it was fine, i read and listened while doing a bunch of other things and chores, so it went by quickly, i did gasp at a certain part, but like i said, all the other stuff kind of went over my head - either i didn't understand it or couldn't keep everything straight from all 3 books in order to connect the dots.
i loved all the romance subplots, because i am me. no shame in that.
the end made me cry - but literally, you could write that scene about strangers and i would cry because i am an emotional person. i liked it a lot though, it was almost enough for me to give another star, but.
as for the drama with the authors, i didn't realise it until i was reading reviews when i'd almost finished the book. so i continued the book, but it left a bad taste in my mouth - especially because, dammit, it's hard to find australian authors and i liked supporting him. i wanted to reread illuminae, and finish that series, but i have no desire to now.
I love this series so much. It’s all the adventure and fast-paced action you want in science-fiction, but it also tackles issues of acceptance, leadership, war, and most of all, love. Yes, there is tons of snogging in this book, but it also deals with how strength can only be found through love. Peace can only be found through love. Wars can be won because of love. And the universe can be saved by seven incredibly smart, brave, and snarky teenagers.
A roller coaster ride of a novel. You will seriously not be able to take a breath. I would recommend ANYtHING by these authors who combine readability and excitement with very human stories in every story that they write.
This was one of the best series endings I have ever read. I laughed, I cried, and I swooned. Seriously it was just amazing
This finale to the trilogy exceeded my expectations!
The squad is back and they are running out of time to save the galaxy from the Ra'haam. Everyone has a part to play in this epic conclusion that is well written and works really well. Is there humor, nail biting tension, tears and sappiness? Yes!! Exactly what you would expect. I don't want to give anything away so I am just going to say that this was a fun series and I really loved reading it!!
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with the digital copy in exchange for an honest review.
I really didn't enjoy this book. I read the first 1/3 of the book (part 1) and then put it down and didn't really care about coming back. Then, I got the audiobook from the library and re-listened to the first 3rd as well as some more (including the ending). It just didn't capture my interest. I also found it incongruous that in a futuristic setting with different races and little mention of Earth would have a character labeled as Asian. It felt like this book was quickly put together without much editing. I would recommend this to very few people.
Aurora's End is a wonderful conclusion to the Aurora trilogy. From the beginning, readers are thrown into the midst of the action. The story jumps between multiple time lines and characters. This can sometimes be jarring but Kaufman and Kristoff do a wonderful job of transitioning. After the major cliffhanger in Aurora Burning, I was hesitant to jump into this title. Thankfully, the story really wrapped up nicely. I think maybe the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I felt the ending maybe wrapped up TOO nicely. I love a good conflicted ending, and this one didn't seem quite up to my preference. Overall, great final book and one I will certainly add to our collection.
Squad 312 has been working together to stop Earth from being destroyed. Nothing goes as planned, which is good because they aren’t good at making plans anyway. Through a series of unlikely events, this group of misfits travels back in time to fix the future. They are unsuccessful, but that is OK because they are in a time loop and they get to do it all over again! Will they be able to make friends with the enemy to save the future? What sacrifices will need to be made along the way?
Aurora’s End is the third book in The Aurora Cycle. When I hear time loop I think of the Groundhog’s Day movie, but this is nothing like that. Kaufman and Kristoff work together to fill this sci-fi adventure with everything fans would want. They even have just a bit of romance sprinkled throughout. The action was continuous and I kept thinking I was reaching the conclusion, but then I would look and see I had a lot more book to get through. This is supposed to be the final book and if it is, it was a strong finish.
I don't know how I was lucky enought to be able to get this ARC but It made my day when I saw that I was approved.. I ended up finishing both books 2 and 3 in the same day because there was no way that after reading the second one I was going to wait even a day to see how squad 312 was going to survive what I knew was coming..
I dont really know how to put how I feel about this series and this last book in particular into words.. Other than to say that I LOVED IT!! I flew through Aurora's End furiously flipping pages until I was sure of how of how it was going to end.. I am so going to miss squad 312, but Im definitely going to be reading this again.. soon.. I want to really savor it the second time around.. This time after that cliffhanger from the second book.. I desperately needed to know what was happening next.. I found this to be fast paced and extremly action packed. Enemies become allies, become friends of a sort.. Things are happening on so many different levels at different moments that everything coming together the way it did was amazing!.This has become one of my favorite series, and I can't wait for my physical copy to come and finish my collection.. I will forever read everythign that Kaufman and Kristoff write together.
Squad 312 forever. ✊🏼
Exactly what you hoped for, nothing like you expected.
It's hard to summarized or quantify what I just read. Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman have created one of my favorite space operas of all time: raunchy, offbeat, exciting, energizing. They also managed to create a trilogy that somehow got better even after starting off with an almost perfect beginning.
I love these characters and just writing this review is making me smile. What are you still reading for? Grab yourself a copy of Aurora's End and learn all about the Betraskan, bisexual disaster on the cover.
This series is just fun. No other way to put it.
Highly recommend if you enjoyed Umbrella Academy.
(4.5) a great conclusion to one of my fav series! These characters are so dynamic and it was great to really see them on full display in this book. I love how the authors do an amazing job of recapping and putting you right back into the drama. Seriously love this series and can’t wait to see what these authors do next. Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for an e-arc of this book in exchange for an honest review!
