A fun way to learn your opposites! And the tiny sumos are honestly so adorable!! We really like this book series.
This is a children's book that I read to my twin boys. This book is great for baby to pre-k. This is a easy to read book that is really cute. I really loved reading this with my boys. They read some of the words as well which is great to. I did find one or two of the words a little to big for the age group this book is targeting. I loved the pictures in this book. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Little Bigfoot) or author (Sanae Ishida) via NetGalley, so I can give honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.
Sumo Opposites by Sanae Ishida was a cute little book all about little sumos which is Japanese sport which is famous in Japan and is apart of Japanese culture .
This book was bright and very colourful every small child will love.
The age group is for 2 - 4 years.
The Little Sumo series is a fun board book that teaches opposites. This is part of a series created by Sanae Ishida that is created to introduce children to the concept of opposites and shares Japanese culture. The illustrations are colorful and adorable. The little sumo wrestlers demonstrate familiar opposites for children.
I really enjoyed this cute picture book with all the little sumos. I even learned some Japanese in the process. The pictures were bright and colorful.
Sumo Opposites by Sanae Ishida is a picture book illustrated with adorable sumo wrestlers. The book has one word/ picture on each page with the opposite word on the page beside it. What makes this book different is that the words are in English and Japanese. I’ve seen other bilingual books, but not one that was on English and Japanese. This is a great way to introduce opposites to young children while also exposing them to Japanese culture. I will be adding this to my classroom language arts library.
This was adorable. I loved the bright illustrations. I could see a young child loving this book, as it’s perfect for their short attention span.
Review to come to blog on August 24th and in September on goodreads.
I received this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.
The first one of the two Sumo books I got from Netgalley. I also got Sumo Counting (look forward to a review for that coming tomorrow). I just couldn't resist these adorable/fun looking books.\
In this book we get all the opposites! Being Asleep and Awake, Up and Down, and many more fun opposites done in a fun style that had me smiling so much! Just what I needed as I just had my first vaccine shot yesterday (writing this one on 27th May). I could use something cute and fun and this is definitely it. I loved the various opposites that were picked and loved seeing how they were portrayed. Like the full, not meaning that he is full, but that is table is full. Next is empty and it is carnage, there is no food any where. Everything has been gobbled up by our sumo wrestler. Haha, he sure was hungry.
While the blurb specifies that it is about Japanese culture, I thought the sumo wrestlers and what they do would be that. But there is more! We also learn Japanese words, in both romaji and in the written language. I knew all the words! Guess something stuck over the years watching anime, working at an anime/japanese online radio, and maybe learning a bit of Japanese (though constantly giving up as it is just too much). I love that kids can learn opposites and Japanese words thanks to this fun book.
The art was just adorable. I love the little sumo wrestlers.
All in all, recommended! This is such a fun little read and I am sure kids will love it!
As with Sanae Ishida's other title, Sumo Counting, Sumo Opposites is super adorable and welcoming to children. I love the illustration style that is perfect for young children.
Sumo Opposites is a bilingual Japanese/English illustrated book for babies and children about opposites written and illustrated by Sanae Ishida. Due out 7th Sept 2021 from Sasquatch imprint Little Bigfoot, it's 22 pages and will be available in boardbook format.
This is such a fun book with engaging colourful and fun illustrations full of movement and learning opportunities. Each of the illustrations covers two full pages with simple inset text describing the pictures simply with words shown in both English and Japanese hiragana / IPA. It's written as opposites: "up/down", "awake/asleep", "full/empty" etc and each subsequent picture is filled with more little sumo wrestlers doing sumo thing in their daily lives; eating, training, dressing and washing. The illustrations are full of subtle little extras which will provide lots of opportunity for hunt and find during reading time.
I really liked that this little book (and the other one in the series) is full of Japanese vocabulary which is easy to understand. All the Japanese words included in the text are also defined with their IPA/hiragana in the text. This would make a wonderful all-ages book for babies up to adults who want to learn a few rudimentary words as well as simple cultural things from Japan.
Additionally, and it has no real bearing on the book review, but the author/artist, Sanae Ishida's own website and blog are wonderfully creative and full of beautifully designed and constructed sewn clothing, watercolors, printables, papercrafts, and insight. She's a multi-talented creative soul and I am in awe of her sheer productivity.
Five stars.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
This was a clever way to show opposites. And adding the Sumo and Japanese traditions was a great way to introduce children to other cultures.
