This was a light and fun graphic novel for tweens. The tone is super snarky and sarcastic but Barb is actually a really kind and thoughtful character. In the prologue she is been thrown into a war between monsters and humans when her Berzerker friends are captured by an evil witch. Shockingly, the next time we see her she has teamed up with a monster, Porkchop, for her quest. Barb and Porkchop go on other adventures in their search for allies from the north.
I cannot wait to recommend this book to tweens who like adventures and/or graphic novels!
A wacky, hilarious, ridiculous farce, filled with unforgettable characters and perfectly nonsensical illustrations—perfect for fans of Dav Pilkey and Jeffrey Brown.
Graphic novel about a girl fighting in battles against some weird creatures. Im not the target audience, so I didn't care too much for it. I imagine a 3rd - 5th grade boy or girl who likes weird and/or gross humor and lots of battle action would really like this. I didn't care for the illustrations and didn't really find much sense to the whole book.
It is a series starter and it does have a cliffhanger ending but that’s ok. It’s a cute start to an adventure series for kids. I’d guess it aimed at a 7 or 8 year old. There’s action but it isn’t scary. I’d hand this one to the right aged kid that liked fantasy adventure quite happily.
You know what's a drag? Cliffhangers! But that's okay.
Barb the Last Berzerker was a superb read.
While Barb's monster fighting team sees her as an annoyance, never listening to orders, causing problems, and doing what she wants... She's honest, upfront, and never afraid to dive in (sometimes literally) to do the right thing.
On the other hand, she's always never afraid to start or even back down from a fight.. which often causes things to escalate.
But in the end, resolution is reached because Barb doesn't give up. She doesn't let go.
She's on a mission and she's going to make sure she gets it done. Occasionally getting sidetracked and meeting some friends along the way. Oh and stopping for food. Food is important!
**Thank you to Simon and Schuster Publishing and NetGallery for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. **
This is a great graphic novel that features a strong, female warrior who must wield a great and mighty weapon without succumbing to it's unyielding power. Barb is brave, ambitious, and willing to fight for those she loves, and though her journey is full of humor along the way, this story is ultimately about a young girl who must find balance while fighting for others.
Barb is a young Berzerker, the last one left fighting in the human/monster war after all of the big Berzerkers are captured. On her epic quest to save her people, she meets new friends and enemies and sausage salesman. Will she be able to save the day?
I don't know. And you won't either. This book is all lead up with a cliffhanger at the end. It is cute-adjacent in a "you know exactly where they are going with this" sort of every-epic-quest-ever-trope" sort of way. The two big things that put me on the fence about whether I will finish the series is 1: The humor sort of relies on quips to try to be funny, but you can only read so many four-word thought bubbles before you just want to glaze over them and read anything with ACTUAL substance. And they aren't even great quips. 2: I sort of dislike books that only serve as a means to build up to the second book. No resolution, heaping conflict after conflict, ending with a cliffhanger that is just the buildup to the next book. And It just didn't quite hit the mark for me of being funny or cute enough to make me want to work my way through another one to see where the next cliff hanger will take me...
It was a great premise, who doesn't love a good Berzerker, but it just fell a little short of the mark for me.
I received an ARC from NetGalley, but my opinions are all mine.
This fun, fantastical graphic novel has lots of attitude and adventure, and main character Barb is capable and confident. The ending was great and the epilogue opens the door for further adventures. I can't wait for more in this new series. I think this is a really strong book that will appeal to all genders, and the silly illustrations and epic adventures will make it a favorite for fans of Adventure Time and Steven Universe. It's a no brainer for any library with a good audience for graphic novels.
