This book had me hooked from page one! My favorite part of reading this genre is when there are unexpected twists and turns, and the author of this novel delivered. Would definitely recommend!
“We were trapped. Waiting for death. Waiting for the game to end.”
WOW. Just when you think the plot can’t take any more turns, it flips again!! This was an intense thriller that had me guessing the whole time. A secluded cabin, secrets, death, and being trapped all make for the best novel. Grace and Ryan both seemed like an average couple to begin with, but how much an you really know someone?
5 stars! Highly recommend!!
Wow, KM does it again! Modglin has quickly become one of my favorite authors to read. She always includes a wow factor I couldn’t see coming!
Tons of twists and turns. I loved the dynamic between Grace and Ryan. Kiersten Modglin has written another unputdownable thriller. Highly recommended.
Their lives before they were together shouldn't mean much, people can change right? What happens when things start bleeding into their lives together. Can she trust Ryan? She's in the middle of nowhere with her husband, but can she trust him to protect her and keep them alive? Definitely give this one a chance. It doesn't slow down!
You know how sometimes a book seems familiar – like, you’ve read it before? But you know it’s not possible because it is a new release? And you have that feeling most of the way through the book until there is a twist that pulls the rug out from underneath you and then you realize that you haven’t read it before and everything you thought you recognized was totally wrong?
Yeah, this is one of those.
Let me preface the rest of this by saying that it might sound at times as if I didn’t like the book, but that’s not the case. Read the whole way through first.
I will stand by my thought that the first part of the book seemed run-of-the-mill in some places. Newly married couple takes a belated honeymoon to a secluded cabin. Spooky things occur. Things get weird.
I thought some of the dialogue in the first two thirds of the book often seemed stilted. There was a lot of repetition, and chapters often ended with an ominous thought that didn’t always seem to be followed through. It got a little bit annoying and there were times that I almost gave up.
But I know from past books that there is always more to this author’s stories. So, I kept at it.
Sure enough, things take a total turn just over halfway through. Riddles are answered, more twists occur, and things go quite dark. And just when you think you’ve reached the depths of how twisted the story (and the relationship) is – well, let’s just say you haven’t.
There’s still more.
Right up to the very last page.
This isn’t the type of book that supports an analysis of the characters and whether they were likeable or not. I think it’s enough to say that both Grace and Ryan are damaged and have secrets that they’ve hidden from each other.
And boy, do those come back to bite them.
I suppose if you wanted to get really deep, you could say that it’s an example of like attracting like and there’s a bit of Stockholm Syndrome on both of their parts. But I don’t want to give too much away.
Read this book for the cheap thrills in the first half but stay for the dark twists in the second half. It’s a worthwhile ride.
2.5 stars ⭐️⭐️💫 rounded up.
Grace and Ryan are on their honeymoon in a cabin in the woods. While they appear to be normal newlyweds, they are both harboring a secret: years ago, Ryan did something terrible, and unbeknownst to him, Grace knows what it is. When creepy things start happening at the cabin, Grace begins to wonder if she should be afraid of her new husband.
This was a quick read with quite a few twists... some of which are unbelievable. Both Grace and Ryan are pretty unlikable characters and by the end you will probably like them even less. While those two points don’t exactly make the book sound very appealing, I do think it’s worth reading if you enjoy fast-paced psychological thrillers!
Overall I didn’t hate it but I didn’t love it either.
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.
This was a short book, and a very quick read for me. Talk about twists & turns!
Grace and Ryan went on their honeymoon trip to a cabin in the woods. They went hiking and found a strange seemingly homeless man. Ryan is kind and gives the man items to help him. Grace is terrified and feels something off about him. Later, there are strange events happening, their cars windshield breaks. Grace is sure it’s the man coming back to hurt them. Why does this man want to hurt them? What secret as are Grace and Ryan hiding?
This was an entertaining quick read for me. Definitely eerie and twisty. The ending was a bit crazy for me, a little unbelievable, but entertaining nonetheless. I would recommend this book.
Kiersten Modglin does it again!! Such a gripping and thrilling story. The perfect thriller! This book had me guessing from the very beginning and I wasn’t even close to getting it right.
Just Married is a fast-paced thriller with several twists and a claustrophobic feel. It offers suspense and a touch of horror.
Newlyweds Ryan and Grace take a small scale honeymoon to a remote cabin in the woods. Things start well but then strange things begin to happen after a chance encounter with a man in the woods. With no car and phone, can the couple stay safe and will the secrets they are hiding from each other finally come to light...?
Just Married is an entertaining thriller. This is the first book I have read by Kiersten Modglin and I really enjoyed it so will search out her other novels.
The plot and secrets unravel as the chapters alternate between Ryan and Grace's first person narrative. Both main characters were well developed and it really helped to have their personal perspectives on events as they unfurled. Their relationship seemed authentic: still in the first flush of love, considering starting a family, pet owning.
I had suspicions galore but the twists kept coming! Both of the couple are keeping secrets but can their marriage survive the truth? I honestly had no idea how it would end or how I wanted the characters to continue their lives.
There is a tension which is maintained throughout the book. The atmosphere is almost claustrophobic as the couple's world shrinks when their phones and transport are cut off. Then there is the danger from the man in the woods and the couple discover that they are staying in an infamous 'murder cabin'.
Just Married had me hooked as I was immersed in the couple's dangerous lies and the multiple plot twists.
Lots of twists in this story with a bit of horror. Creepy in places and a new author that I will look out for.
Thanks to Netgalley for allowing me to read this excellent book
This was my first read by Kiersten Modhlin, and phew! It did NOT disappoint. The twists in this were so good! I devoured this book in two days. Thank you, NetGalley for the gifted review copy!
Just Married by Kiersten Modglin is a super intense psychological thriller that grabs you right from the start with an amazing prologue that sets the eerie tone for the rest of this story.
Grace and Ryan are finally ready to go on their much needed honeymoon after being married six months ago. There is a perfect and secluded cabin in the middle of the woods that will offer them the privacy they seek. But, Grace has a secret, one that she never told Ryan. She knows what Ryan did years ago and she is happy to take that secret to the grave. But someone else in the woods has other plans for Ryan and Grace. Is there an even bigger secret still left to be revealed?
I have to say, I could not read this story late at night when I was by myself. As much as I hated doing it, but I had to put it down because even though this story is labeled as psychological suspense, it did have a lot of horror elements included which scared the crap out of me! I like the woods in the daytime, but at night I am out of there! You won’t catch me in the middle of the woods with no cell service, no way to escape, and complete darkness outside. I’ve seen Friday the 13th and I know how it ends! This story reminds me so much of why I love living in a city!
Just Married is not a long story, but don’t let the short amount of pages fool you, there is a lot to take in and you will be sucked in by flipping through the pages needing to know what happens next. With that being said, we just touch the surface with the characters, although I felt the ending really portrayed the characters the best and yeah THAT was rather unexpected, but in a good way.
Just Married is a gripping psychological suspense that might scare the pants off of you, have you looking over your shoulder when it is dark outside and make you jump from every little noise you hear. I loved every minute of it!
Wow...talk about twists you don't see coming! Just Married is an absolute thrill ride.
This is my first book by Kiersten Modglin and boy was I blown away. This fast paced thriller gave me goosebumps with so many thrills and chills, it was simply unputdownable. With suspense resonating throughout, an atmospheric setting, complicated characters and a plot that keeps getting better with each page.
This book has everything you look for in a great thriller. An addictive, compelling read. I'm really looking forward to reading more from Kiersten Modglin.
Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for this ARC.
This book was fast paced, super easy to read in one sitting, and it makes you want to. It really creeped me out to the point of having to put it down in fear I wouldn’t be able to get to sleep because I was so scared of each and every noise my house made.
Just when you think you have it figured out there are more and more twists. Yeah, I could have done without some of the twists, but it kept me guessing and I enjoyed that.
I found myself not liking either of the characters, and liking them less as you learn more and more about them.
Fast paced, twisty and good writing style. Not much to complain about here.
“Trust me, babe. No one can see us out here.”
...how wrong I was.
I could never have seen those massive twists at the end coming!! This is a mind-blowing domestic thriller - about a couple experiencing genuine terror on their honeymoon in a secluded cabin - that gets even more heart-pounding in the final third!!
The prologue was definitely not what I made it out to be. There are some frightening moments throughout and the anxiety you feel at the end is palpable. Everyone needs to add this to their list!
Expect some twists and turns? Yes
Expect to be mind-boggled? Definitely No.
I do not think that this book has something new to give to all the thriller lovers.
For me, it was an average read. Surely it had its own highs but it failed to impress me on a great level. However, I will still give this book a strong 3 star because I think it might be a good pick to come out of a reading slump and for beginners.
Was a great thrill ride! Full of twists, turns, thrills, chills, and shocks! Fast paced and unputdownable! My first by this author, but not my last! Highly, highly recommend this riveting read!
This is an author that is on her way to being one of my favorites. I loved how her books pull me into the story from the beginning. They are well written and the author's use of attention to details made the story feel realistic. This book is no differrent. I loved reading this book and how fast paced it was. The characters come to life on each page and the bring suspence to a new level. They are connectable and kept the story engaged. I loved this book and it is one of my favorites by her yet. I had a hard time putting this book down and I highly recommend it.
