It's the return of the team from Blacks Rock Falls
When a body is discovered in the the forest Jenna gets a sense of "De Ja Vu" as the method used is very reminiscent of a past case that she investigated as other killings come to light the question must be asked "do they have a copy cat killer on their hands"?
I have read several of the most recent books in this series and each one that I have read so far has been as good as the last and this one doesn't disappoint it's just as engaging as all the others I've read.
The standard of writing is top notch, a faced paced chilling tense read another winner to add to an already magnificent series.
I was home alone when I read the first chapter, and I will never do that again when I read a D.K. Hood novel. I should know better I have read or listened to the all in this series. This certainly can be read as a stand alone, but I say invest in yourself and read the entire series. Get to know each of the characters and the little things that come out along the way. This was a fast read full of suspense, mystery, a rocking good thriller. I love the way D.K. Hood addressed the premise of this series, killers in small town of Black Rock Falls. Such a treat to come back to Black Rock Falls as I have become invested in all the characters and I know that I will be reading with my feet in my chair, no touching the floor, with the lights on and making sure my fur babies are with me. Thank you for the true entertainment you provide, and of course the heart check each book provides! Thank you for the arc, DK Hood, Bookouture and Netgalley, I freely share my thoughts an opinions, unsolicited.
Wow. What a way to start a book. I was hooked before the first chapter ended.
The plot kept me guessing as I had no idea who was involved and why. Full of twists and turns to keep you turning the pages.
My only slight criticism is I feel it was all very rushed at the end. For that reason it's only 4 stars this time.
I love following Jenna and Dave's adventures and I can't wait to read number 13.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of Cross my Heart, the twelfth novel to feature Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane of the Black Rock Falls, Montana Sheriff’s Office.
When a body is found in the local forest the way he is killed reminds Jenna of an old case and a psychopathic killer she put behind bars. When more bodies are found she is convinced he is manipulating events from prison, Dave thinks it’s more likely to be a copycat.
I thoroughly enjoyed Cross my Heart, which is a heart pounding read full of thrills, spills and tension. As ever the narrative switches between the investigators and the unnamed killer and it works well. If the opening attack on Jenna’s home doesn’t give the game away, that his focus is on her, then his thoughts certainly will. It ratchets up the tension with Jenna frightened, convinced that her nemesis will come for her, and him confirming it.
I wasn’t too enthusiastic about what I saw as a reworking of a previous novel, but I have to admit that the author has outdone herself. She takes an old premise, makes it into something completely different and totally fooled me. It won’t go down as the most realistic novel ever written, but that’s hardly important when it’s so entertaining. There is rarely a dull moment and the final showdown scene and denouement are even better than the norm in the series. 10/10 for imagination.
Black Rock Falls is serial killer central in this series as they seem to get a new one every couple of months, but that isn’t an issue for the Sheriff’s Office because Jenna, Dave and the medical examiner, Shane Wolfe, all have pasts as top level government operators and access to restricted equipment. It’s another reality pushing scenario but who cares as it makes the read fun. Jenna and Dave have grown closer as the series progresses, so I keep hoping to hear the patter of tiny feet as it seems like a natural progression but I suspect it would end the series. They could hardly risk life and limb on a regular basis with dependents.
Cross my Heart is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
Thank you to #NetGalley and #Bookouture for allowing me to read the latest Kane and Alton book #CroosMyHeart
Although I have loved all of them, I think it is time for them to end. There are only so many ways to tell the same story before it becomes boring.
I always wonder how an author decides to end a series and I hope one of the ways is to listen to their audience. I relish the thought of a last book to tie up loose ends and look forward to reading any new series by this talented writer.
I mean no disrespect to this writer or any other by my review, and I am very sorry if it offends anyone.
A person has to be pretty brave to spend much time in Black Rock Falls. There have been plenty of gruesome murders committed there. The area seems to attract serial killers like crazy. In D.K. Hood's 12th Detectives Kane and Alton series book, Cross My Heart, there are multiple murders and great danger for Sheriff Jenna Alton and her deputy, David Kane.
I loved all the action and suspense in this book. Plus I enjoy how well Jenna's team works together. Dave and Jenna have become close and I think that's great for both of them. I can't wait to see what D.K. Hood comes up with for Jenna and Dave next. This is one of my favorite series!
I received an ARC in exchange for a honest review.
It's nearing Halloween in Black Rock Falls and Detectives Kane and Alton are back, and this time they're hunting a killer whose kills make no real sense, except that they are eerily similar to someone else's. But that person is behind bars, isn't he?
Yet, when Sheriff Jenna Alton is targeted and more bodies appear, Jenna is sure he's out and looking for revenge. But her team and especially her closest colleague and friend, Detective Dave Kane isn't so sure and is prepared to do anything to keep Jenna focused on the present and not on the past.
And with brilliant pacing, twists galore, and an ending I did not see coming CROSS MY HEART was a cracking, intense and atmospheric crime thriller, that I happily stayed up far too late reading.
Would recommend.
Another winner from DK Hood! Book 12 and still no signs of letting up. Kane and Alton. The stories, the series tings, the characters... all still as strong as ever. Set at Halloween in Black Rock Falls, it is dark and creepy and intense.. just how I like them.
Why anyone would want to go to Black Rock Falls is being me! It feels like the murder capital of the world and we have plenty more bodies this time to add to the count. Starting with Jenna being attacked in her home during a storm which Dave is away and leading into a puzzling case f bodies being found in very similar circumstances as a case that put away a vile psychopath. But he is still behind bars... Is this a copycat or something more sinister?
Thanks so much to Bookouture and NetGalley for my advanced copy of this book to read.
Great read with all the action, tension and ensemble of characters that make this wonderful novel. One of Alton's most terrifying adventures yet!
Thank you netgalley and the publisher for this arc
Another stellar entry in this series. Black Rock Falls at Halloween is definitely a dangerous and spooky place to be.
This tension filled page turner has it all: a clever plot, great characters and lots of action. Throw in a copycat serial killer, a scary home invasion and some nasty weather and you've got a thrilling fast paced read.
Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for this ARC.
D.K. Hood is one of those writers who can grab you by the throat with just one scary moment! And once that scary moment is over, you're taken on a thrill ride of a lifetime. I keep saying that tourists need to stay away from Black Rock Falls, but no one is listening! Jenna and Kane don't catch a break in this book...every time I think that they'll journey on the "sweet feeling" moment, somebody dies! This was an edge of your seat thriller, for sure! They didn't only have to deal with one, but three suspects! And, Jenna seems to be the target of someone that just doesn't like her.
It's not advisable to read this as a "stand-alone" book, because you need to understand Kane, Alton and the rest of the crew. They make the story go forth with full force!
Read it, please! You won't regret it! Thank you #NetGalley for AC of this book!
Started off with a thrilling first chapter that had me gripped from first sentence. So thrilling and so much anticipation of what is to come.
The excitement of the first few chapters really drives the book for intensity as well as really showing the characters in a great light.
The setting of Black Rock Falls is still one of my favourites. It is a beautiful place but they seem to be cursed. So many crimes and murders just makes it feel a little unpalatable to stay for long.
The characters are still amazing amd honestly some of them are becoming top choices for my favourite characters.
Kane is still a top character and the way he reacts is typical. You see how much he trusts Jenna and how much he cares for him.
Jenna this time is more dealing with weakness. Weakness isn't really a great word for it but she was more vulnerable than I remember her being.
Shane again is great and seeing his relationships with his friends and his children shows a lot about him.
The story is great and you get to learn more about Kane which is great. Has a lot of suspense filled moments which makes the read even more sweet.
I feel that the best is yet to come in this series as it just keeps getting better the more you see of these characters. Truly impressed and just want so many more books about these characters.
Another great instalment in the Kane & Alton series As is usual with this series I was gripped from the first page. The characters are likeable and I love the relationship between Jenna & Dave. Plenty of twists make for an amazing read. I just love this series and can’t wait for the next book. I wouldn’t advise living in their town though ha.
Bodies in the woods and a home invasion have Sheriff Jenna Alton convinced that her nemesis James Stone is trying to get to her from his prison cell. Deputy Kane is not convinced and thinks there is a copycat. When two suspects appear that cancel each other out it looks like the team aren’t going to be able to make a case.
Another fantastic read in this series by D K Hood.
Thanks to Netgalley, Bookouture and D K Hood for the ARC of this book in return for an honest review.
This is book #12 in the Kane & Alton series. It can be read as a standalone book, but I would recommend reading the books in series order for better understanding of the characters back stories. I absolutely love this series and when I hear there is a new book out I make sure I clear time out to read it in one sitting! We are back in Black Rock Falls, where it looks like there is another serial killer on the loose. The killings however, are very similar to murders committed several years before someone well known to Sheriff Alton. Is it a copycat killing or has an old adversary returned? I love Jenna Alton's character and really felt for her in this book. Whilst she always knows Deputy Dave Kane will always cover her back, can he help her with the memories that these latest killings are resurrecting for her?
This new instalment is exciting, thrilling and has enough gruesome bits to make your stomach churn!! I found myself transfixed by the storyline and once started I couldn't put it down! As always, Jenna and Dave's relationship worked really well, but we definitely see a little bit more vulnerability to Jenna's character. The book's first few chapters are explosive and I didn't want to tear my eyes away from the page for fear of what might happen! The whole story has a creepy feel to it, made so much worse that it is set at Halloween and if you are anything like me, you'll be reading it from behind a cushion!
We welcome back the usual characters from previous books, such as Wolfe, Rowley, FBI Agents Ty Carter and Jo Wells, Atohi and Rio. Something, for me, still doesn't feel right about Rio and I'll be watching to see if I'm proved right or wrong! I'm also missing Wolfe not being in the story as much as he used to be and hope that he gets a bigger storyline in the future! We are however kept busy with the killings to not let it bother me too much, and I found myself putting everyone under suspicion as to whether they were the killer!
The plot, as with previous books, is strong, hypnotic, fast paced and nerve wracking! I can only begin to imagine what the mountains of Montana are really like, but this author does a fantastic job bringing them to me! Whilst I'd love to live in Black Rock Falls, I have to admit the weather, the bears...oh and the serial killers do put me off a little bit!!! Filled with suspense, mystery and more red herrings than I can mention, this book had me hooked right to the very last page! LOVED it!! Would definitely recommend!!!
Really enjoyed this book the storyline was interesting and kept me engaged all the way through. I’m giving it five stars because it was a great book but I feel the series is getting a little stale. Each book is a series of murders in the forest and are very similar. I hope the next book is a bit different.
D.K,. Hood's Kane and Alton Series just keeps getting stronger and more action packed! This book had me up much past my bedtime. Whilst Dave Kane is away at a conference, Jenna Alton's ranch is invaded by what she describes as a gunslinger... with a crossbow. As she's processing this, couples in their community are going missing and are being found murdered... also with a cross bow. Kane arrives back to help Jenna with her ranch, as well as the case -- and brings along Jo and Ty. Jenna feels this is all linked back to a man she put away - but he's safely locked in prison, so how can it be. Be prepared - you're in for a wild ride... I can't wait to see where Kane and Alton go next!
Halloween or Groundhog Day?? Another great instalment in the Detectives Kane and Alton series.
Even though is this book 12, you can totally read this as a standalone, but be warned that you want to go back. Halloween is fast approaching as Sherrif Jenna Alton’s home is invaded and it gives her a sense of déjà vu, then a body is found and she again she sees similarities to a previous case. Is she seeing things that are not there?
Page turner from the start!
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for an early read of this book in exchange for my opinion.
Might be my all time favorite book of the series but then i say that for all of the ones I've read so far . loved seen my favorite characters back in action as well as re visiting their town, but I still wouldn't want to live there .
What can I say about this book? I think there are not enough superlatives to describe how good it was yet again, but I am going to try anyway.
You might remember I crowned this author my queen of creepiness and she delivers another amazing and brilliant book that had chills running a marathon up and down my spine.
Jenna and her team are dealing with another psychopath. Nothing new there. They are quite used to having them using Black Rock Falls as their favorite playground, but this one seems to be the emperor of the psychopaths.
He is a smart cookie and up to a point his scheming really works. It drives the whole force crazy, but when push comes to shove, the good ones succeed each and every time even though it sometimes is a very close call.
You sometimes think, this series is so good and every book is a piece of art, can the next one still be as good? Well, yes, it seems it's possible and I can even say more. They get better and better. It will be a sad day when and if Kane and Alton decide to retire. I would miss them terribly.
It's an amazing feeling being able to read such wonderful books. 5 stars.
Thank you
