"Bracingly ingenious, light summer romance that will surely capture your heart and occupy your mind for days."

What I like the most about this graphic novel is that it's such a simple story and idea from the creator, but it'll make a mark on one of the best realistic manga.

This was actually absolutely adorable and I love how light this is. There's not that much ridiculous conflict that mangas usually have, and they are so open and sincere with each other. I'm actually partial to Wataru's frankness and it was my favorite thing about him, he's blunt but he's not hot-headed and irrational. He's actually so kind, considerate, thoughtful, and well-meaning in a lot of ways except being patronizing. Saeki is such an endearing person. I don't think he knew that he has certain effects to people that makes them like him, and just plainly become comfortable around him. But I think he knew that he's more than a hot geeky boy to Wataru, even though Wataru didn't remember him immediately, and that makes him like Wataru even more.

I also like the art style! It has a classic feel to it yet fresh and kind of modern at the same time.

If the volume 2 comes out soon, I will be for sure to buy a copy of it because I need more of Wataru and Saeki!

The creator and the other people behind this story and characters did really a great job at making this alive. It's such a perfect summer read and one that will make you want more.

So what was this graphic novel about?

Hints: movie geeks, a (very romantic) summer trip, an adventurous and frank boy meet a hot and laid-back geek, and a happily ever after.

Art style is a big feeling factor for me when it comes to manga and My Summer of You’s art is delicately simple and lovely. The artist is quite talented in displaying the characters’ emotions and this made Chiharu and Wataru especially endearing. This manga’s blurb compares it to I Hear the Sunspot and I can see fans of that series also enjoying this one.

Unlike that series, My Summer of You doesn’t have the great slow-burn I’ve come to love and I did feel at times it lacked a certain amount of depth. However, by the conclusion of this first volume, I did become attached to the characters and I’m hopeful volume two will expand on their relationship.

Thanks so much to Netgalley and Kodansha Comics for providing me with a digital copy in exchange for an honest review.

This was a very wholesome boy’s love story! From the first few pages it was evident that the dialogues were written well - I love that in manga.

I would say this was mostly a character driven story but the plot still had a few twists I didn’t see coming. I liked that the friendship between Saeki and Wataru felt very natural.

Throughout the story we mainly get Wataru’s point of view and we often hears his thoughts and narration. After we are told how the two became friends, it was nice to see how well their dynamic worked. Since the two are both passionate about movies, they often go out to the cinema together. Despite not having much in common at first sight (different classes, Saeki is super popular with the girls while Wataru is barely noticed by anyone) they get along really well and like hanging out and talking to each other.

After Wataru sees a girl confess her feelings to Saeki he gets curious and asks Saeki why he refuses every girl’s confession he gets. Saeki, prompted by the romantic movie they just saw admits that it is because he has a crush on Wataru himself. After the initial disbelief on Wataru’s side Saeki insists that nothing has to change between them. He only asks Wataru for one thing: during the summer break go on small trips with him to visit some famous shooting locations, as some kind of pilgrimage.

As they continue to hang out as usual and go on their trips Wataru struggles with figuring out how he feels about Saeki. He doesn’t seem to find it fair that Saeki just decided things are one sided between them when he himself still doesn’t know he feels about it.

I’m not gonna spoil the ending but there is definitely a movie fitting dramatic scene where the two finally talk about their feelings. I wish Wataru’s reaction was a bit less harsh, but I could understand why his initial reaction was to be upset at how Saeki treated things.

I really really loved this story and I like the ending a lot. The side stories were also cute as they explained a bit more about the boys’ past. I would definitely pick up another volume to see how their relationship progresses.

This was truly heartwarming. I really liked the two main characters and the way this volume built up slowly to their reciprocated love. Usually with MLM manga the two main men are heavily sexualised, but that wasnt the case with this story and I really appreciated that. It was sweet, wholesome and moving- and I loved it.

Ive never actually read manga before but this was so cute and enjoyable. There wasn't really much of a plot, just two boys finding themselves and falling in love and it was adorable. The dialogue was a bit iffy but the cuteness made up for it. It was a very short, fast paced read, I read it in about half an hour. I would definitely recommend this.

The Summer of You is a heartwarming story of young love, missed connections, and reunion. I'd recommend it to anyone looking to read a (sometimes bitter) sweet romance, and it's a great introduction into BL manga. I'm looking forward to the next installment and hoping that it will answer some questions left unanswered in this first volume.

A Simple but really enjoyable BL story. The relationship between the main characters is wholesome and tender. I also appreciate the lack of over sexualization of a gay couple that can happen in BL stories but this was focused solely on their emotional relationship. There is a bit of struggle they have, it is not wholly sweet. but it suits the story and doesn't feel forced or too dramatic. This is a very down to earth story that enjoys the quiet and mundane and makes it beautiful.

I requested this because it stated that this is for fans of "Seven Days", "Given" or "I Hear The Sunspot", so naturally I wanted to read it. I don't know if there's gonna be more because it felt final with a few extra stories in the end so I don't know if we get more in this or not.

This was a very cute little summer read with the friends to lovers trope. We follow two guys, where one (Chiharu) is the typical hot guy every girl wants and we have his best friend, Wataru. Chiharu is said to have a lot of girlfriends but yet there seems to be no one in the picture until he throws Wataru completely off by confessing his feelings for him.

It's a very short, quick read, so there's not a lot of character depth and it's all pretty quick pacing but it was nonetheless a great story about love and how it doesn't matter what gender you fall in love with.

So, long story short, if you like a quick summer read about two boys, this is definitely something you should consider reading :)

This delivered on so many levels:
- summer vibes and just general happy feelings just like the cover promises
- two endearing main characters who really stand out personality-wise. There is also just so much laughter and happiness between them, it's heartwarming to see
- friends to lovers (that I liked!) that starts with a confession but no secondhand embarrassment or overly dramatic moments.
- GREAT dialogue. It's funny in the right moments, more serious when needed, and just overall a very smooth reading experience. A+ for the author and the translator.

I will need the sequel right now, thank you.

Wataru and Chiharu are two unlikely friends. Chiharu is the boy every girl wants, super hot, nice and yet, doesn't seem remotely interested in them. Wataru is his unlikely best friend. They go to the movies together, hang out all the time and when Chiharu declares that he likes Wataru as more than a friend, it throws Wataru for a loop. How can this be? Deciding to continue as normal, they visit different sights of a movie that was recorded locally to them, yet Wataru can't get the fact Chiharu likes him out of his mind. Why has this shaken him so much, and why can't he stand the idea of Chiharu liking anyone else? When a typhoon stops them from visiting the last stop on their movie location pilgrimage, they agree to just see each other in school, but when the term starts, Chiharu isn't there and he's changed his number, leaving Wataru in the dust. Can Wataru find him again?

This could make me cry, genuinely cry. This story was so sweet. I do think the back story to Chiharu's life is a little complex but I loved seeing that these two characters have been connected even before they knew each other. This story melted my stone-cold heart which is hard going. I liked the characters and I loved Wataru and how his anger can't last towards the end of the book. This book was well thought out and interesting, keeping the reader interested throughout the story. I enjoyed the art and overall would really recommend this book for those looking a LGBT manga series.

Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me a chance to read The Summer of You.

A wistful summer blossoms between two high-school boys finding themselves and each other through a shared love of movies in this moving, dramatic, two-volume BL romance series, perfect for fans of Seven Days, Given, or I Hear the Sunspot.

Chiharu Saeki and Wataru Toda are two high school students who share a common hobby: They love to watch movies. After they meet, they become fast friends, until one day, when Chiharu confesses his love for Wataru. Wataru says that Chiharu's confession doesn't bother him, and the boys continue throughout their summer, going to pilgrimages to see film spots from their favorite movies. But the more time he spends with Chiharu, Wataru realizes that he may not only be as unaffected by Chiharu's confession as he claimed to be, but those feelings may also be mutual...

It was. Whimsical to be able to follow the boys growing friendship and watch their love for each other blossom into what the end result was. The author wrote in a way that made you feel like you were part of the group watching them grow and become closer. There were some cliches through out the story but they were well out of and written where it didn’t feel like it was being bland and cookie cutter o the source.

I would definitely recommend to any fans of seven days, it gave the same type of nostalgia and romance.

The manga as a whole is a very enjoyable and light-hearted read. One can definitely finish it in one sitting. I’ve read multiple slice of life BL mangas and they usually offer the same feel and vibe. What I find most enjoyable about this manga is that love portrayed is simply as easy as liking a person for who they are and not because of their gender. Love does not need a reason. The characters aren’t complex and their personality is pretty straightforward and their growth is shown without over sexualising their identity. Overall, I would recommend this manga to my friends so they can feel the love too.

For anyone looking for a nice and shonen ai then The Summer of You is the perfect fit.

Following two boys who spend their time together bonding over a love of movies, and soon something more develops between them. This is cute. It reminds me of chilling on a hot day and reading something light. It’s a perfect slow burn with a summer feel (obviously), giving us a couple who are cute together and develop a relationship that opens up new feelings for them.

But honestly, it’s not that deep of a story. It tries to be at times, but I found it tried to use those moments to pad the story out, when really this is a basic shonen ai. That’s not a bad thing. I love shonen ai stories, but after awhile this is going to get lost in all the other ones that have something more to offer. I would recommend a younger audience getting into this, as it’s not explicit.

This is a nice story, that doesn’t really offer anything new, but is comforting all the same.

I am not able to review The Summer of You.
It doesn't have the send to Kindle feature available, thus I am not able to read it.
Sorry.

The Summer of You is the heart-warming, summer read that I didn't know that I needed. It melted my heart and left me wanting for more.

This is a story about two friends (dare I say best friends?) who have bonded over their mutual love for movies. One is popular and extremely good looking, he has tons of girls asking him out and wanting to date him, while the other one isn't as popular and is considered to be quite average, if not a bit strange. This is a slow-burn, where one friend confesses his feelings, while the other one refuses to admit his.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐋𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐝:
- the drawing style
- the cute heart-wrenching story-line
- the fact that there weren't any unnecessary complicated side relationships/characters to get between our lovely and very, very confused protagonists
- the fact that their relationship wasn't forced
- the pangs of jealousy felt between them
- the whole weirdness after the not reciprocated, one sided confession
- slow-burn, but not in the traditional sense
- the whole craziness surrounding the friends to lovers trope
- the cute way they met *cough* the first time
- the intensity of their emotions and how the plot developed
- the bonus stories = perfection

“I’m not letting you leave until the very last second”

This phrase was so me all the way reading this comic! Their hangouts and summer felt endless and I didn’t want it to stop. Basically this comic is about two friends in high school. They’re best friends but one of them might want more than just being friends… It’s such a sweet story and I loved reading about their love for movies but also just seeing how maybe being friends only might not be what they want eventually and the process and adventures to get to that point was so cute and exciting to see. I would have preferred a little more drama or pining but I still think that overall it was meant to be a sweet story of acceptance and growing into one’s true feelings. I definitely didn’t want to let go and keep reading about them!

Such a sweet story of friendship turning into more. I loved how both Chiharu and Wataru weren't entirely sure about what the other one was feeling/thinking but both were willing to give things a chance. And the surprise revelation at the end had me seeing hearts.
The art is pretty simple and I had trouble telling characters apart a couple of times, but it works for the story and displays emotions perfectly when it needs to.
This is definitely a book that gives you happy, lovey feelings.
Many very happy thanks to NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for the read!

Throughout ‘The Summer of You’ Nagisa Furuya captured the start of a beautiful love story, starting with a confession.

The pacing was appropriate and sweet and it made my heart flutter in a great way with simple yet powerful panels.

Saeki and Wataru are adorable teenagers and I think young love was portrayed beautifully here, though the characters could have had a little more depth. Nevertheless I think for a story like this it’s okay if it is lacking in this aspect.

I’m always a little bit iffy about the characters being violent towards each other pre-relationship, just minutes ahead of them ending up together in this case but I can see the intend within the context of the story.

Overall The Summer of You was a really fun read and the bonus chapters are a great addition that did not disappoint either.
