I'm always wanting to learn more about different herbs. Harvesting and using herbs to heal your body is something I have always had interest in. My biggest fear is poisoning myself so learning what to pick and how to identify was super helpful.

It's important to note that this book on Southeast plants is from a colonial Anglo-European perspective. The author and their mentor are colonists marveling at the plants we have in North America while harkening back to European herbalism traditions. If you are looking for an Indigenous herbal guide, this book is not the one.

For those new to foraging or unfamiliar with plant identification/uses, please read this book alongside proper field guides from local (to you), reputable sources AND NIH information. Not everything has been clinically studied, but plenty of these plants have. I find it quite concerning that as I went through this there were multiple plants that had minor warnings when more serious ones were needed. I'm not talking about the alternative medicine language like "lymph mover" or things that have not been proven to do anything (harmful or otherwise). I'm talking about plants that have been studied to cause damage to internal organs with minor warnings for people who are pregnant to avoid them --that is not a sufficient warning.

Use this book at your own risk, but understand that a more detailed supplement is necessary to prevent injury and the author indicates more detailed guides are needed for plant identification. This book is not for beginners noodling through the woods with a plant ID app and a prayer.

Mandatory reading for the south eastern herbalist, forager, bushcrafter, and herb gardener. A beautiful book with amazing pictures. I don't recommend it for the ereader. This is a book that I look forward to having a physical copy of.

Southeast Medicinal Plants covers 106 plants located in the Southeastern states of the U.S. It is complete with great pictures and descriptions. Shane is meticulous in his explanations of how to identify each plant, when to harvest, how to harvest, and how to prepare each plant. He includes fascinating information about how the herbs work within the body and identifies what body system the herb targets.

This was a fascinating read that was very informative. I am by no means an herbalist, but this book was descriptive enough with the identification of each plant that I feel safe harvesting and preparing a few of these plants (dandelion, plantain, violets, raspberries--yep, very basic). For people who are more versed in foraging, this would be a wonderful addition to your reference collection.

Thank you to NetGalley and Timber Press for the ARC!

This was an informative guide to ID plants in my area. I'm always looking for books that give me a detailed look at plants and none has been able to give me the uses in so much detail.

Southeast Medicinal Plants is a great resource for identifying and harvesting wild plants for medicinal uses.

My family has been into natural remedies and medicines since I was a teenager. I love the idea of harvesting and using my own foraged goodies at home.

I'd say I recognized a fairly good amount of these plants from my yard to little walks in nature in and around my home. (Yay! Go me.) I'm from coastal Virginia and live in coastal North Carolina now but I will say that many of the plants identified in the book were familiar to me.

The book explains good foraging practices and goes on to discuss making tinctures, decoctions, teas, drying methods, etc. Each plant shown has a large color photo and maybe a few more to show overall plant structure or flowing looks. Plant details encapsulate where to find it, what may be used for, any contraindications or warnings, preparation details, and potential medicinal uses.

This book is a great resource for those looking to self-forage for your own natural remedies.

This was an extensive guide into idetifying plantlife. I'm glad to hear that this is a part of a series because I am very interested in reading the other guides. There were great descriptions of the plants and their uses along with pictures of the plants. I can't think of anything more important for idetifying something than actually seeing a picture of it and for each plant at least two are usually provided. I think this is a good idea for those getting into plant idetification. I'll probably do more research into preparing the herbs for medicinal purposes just because that part scares me. Great book to pick up if you are into foraging.

Wow. Wow. Wow!

I finally found an herbal book for the Southeast Region of the United States that included a lot of plants in Florida! I was just talking with our local herbalist a month ago that it is so hard to find information on herbs and wildcrafting in Florida. (She is originally from New York and trying to learn the more regional and local medical herbs.) I just want to be able to identify plants that are useful when I see them.

This book had wonderful information and very helpful photos. There were a few plants I would have liked a few more photos on, but most of them were perfect. There are several plants I see all the time in my backyard or at friends homes. The Kudzu is eating our neibourhood, how cool that there is actually a use for it. I wish more people knew that.

The perfect gift for any aspiring herbalist in Florida or the Southeast Region of the United States. I finally found a book useful to where I live. I already ordered my physical copy. I cannot wait to take it on some adventures and practice identifying.

I received an eARC from Timber Press through NetGalley. All opinions are 100% my own.

"Southeast Medicinal Plants" is a guide to foraging wild medicinal plants in the Southeast states. The author started by explaining how to identify and harvest a plant for medicinal use, how to process them, and how to make infusions, decoctions, tinctures, glycerites, oil infusions, and mushroom extracts. The main part of the book was an alphabetically organized list of 106 plants found in the region. For each listing, we're given the common names, the Latin name, the parts of the plant used, a description of how to identify the plant, where, when and how to gather the plant, the medicinal uses of the different parts the plant, how to ensure a future harvest, any safety cautions, and details about how to use the plant (the proportions used in a tincture, etc.). For each plant, there was a picture of the plant (often including its natural habitat) and usually a picture or two of distinguishing details, like the flower or a close-up of the leaf. Overall, this is an excellent resource for anyone interested in gathering and using medicinal plants from this area. It's very informative and provided practical information.

Southeast Medicinal Plants Identify, Harvest, and Use 106 Wild Herbs for Health and Wellness by CoreyPine Shane is an informative read full of insight, tips, and useful information. Like all the books in this series, this is an excellent guide.

Southeast Medicinal Plants is a tutorial and wildcrafting guide and herbal for regional medicinal plants by CoreyPine Shane. Due out 9th Nov 2021 from Timber Press, it's 304 pages and will be available in paperback and ebook formats.

This is an accessible well written herbal guide to 106 indigenous medicinal plants found in southeast North America, from the PA/MD border all the way down to Eastern TX. The author is an experienced wildcrafter and herbalist and writes precisely and well on the subject. The nomenclature he uses is correct and precise for clarity, safety, and identification. It's clear in the text that the author really feels a connection to the natural world and his respect and love shine through. The intro covers the widely disparate terrain contained the southeast along with safety and caution, responsible collecting, and wildcrafting through the seasons. Tools and supplies are covered in the text and are (mostly) easily accessible and will be on hand already for most readers or can be sourced at minimal cost. Each entry contains a highlighted text box with herbal preparations: simple recipes/guides for different uses, such as tinctures, infusions, etc.

The bulk of the book contains an herbal type listing of the plants arranged alphabetically. The plant name is followed by species specifics, medicinal parts used, a descriptive paragraph, wildcrafting tips, where and when to harvest, usage cautions, and other info. Specific recipes are listed in a colored text box. Each also contains several clear photos showing different aspects of growth, habit, and seasonal appearance.

Useful book, well written and illustrated. Five stars.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

The cover was eye appealing and title just caught my eye because I live in the south east. I love herbal remedy books and look forward to adding this to my shelf.

What did I like? The book gives a ton of information about 106 different herbs found in the southeast. I live in a woodsy area deep in South Carolina so I was hoping to recognize something other than kudzu which swallows everything. It’s so plentiful I’m glad to hear it’s good for something. I enjoyed the photo’s, descriptions, and medicinal properties per herb. Identifying seems to be really hard since it seems like every plant has a poisonous look alike.

Would I recommend or buy? Other than making sure your 100% positive you have the right plant this was a great book. I enjoyed looking through it and seeing what medicinal properties the plants have. I would recommend to people who live in the southeast so they could recognize the different plants and utilize for medicine if they choose to. I would love a copy for my shelf! Commune with nature… get out and identify!

I received a complimentary copy to read and voluntarily left a review! Five stars!

This is a great resource on the medicinal plants found in the Southeast. Filled with great photos and information. Recommended for those with some knowledge of how to prepare concoctions and those that feel comfortable with making their own remedies. The book doesn't go much into how to actually make remedies. So for beginner's this book serves as a useful information though not enough for some to feel confident in breaking into making natural remedies. The book would be great along with a hands-on class to get started.

Like all the books in this series, this is an excellent guide. Each plant is shown in at least one (usually 2 or 3) large, color photos and takes up 2-4 pages. You learn where to find it, what it's good for, any contraindications or warnings, and the best way to use it medicinally. The start explains good foraging practices and how to make tinctures, decoctions, teas, etc. There is a wide range of plants that can be used for a wide range of remedies. I appreciate the sustainable advice and reverence for the plants. Don't expect a lot of detail since so many plants are covered, or in depth recipes. This is still a fantastic guide though and deserves a place on any SE forager or herbalist's bookshelf.

I read a temporary digital ARC of this book via net galley.
