This was a cute rom-com. I really liked both main characters and thought their chemistry was great. I enjoy a grumpy guy main character in romances. The side characters were fun as well. I’d recommend this to anyone wanting a nice, light read.
I loved this book! It had everything I like in it; a powerful female character, lovely romance, books and a nice village. If I could, I'd apply for the mentioned book club right away.
If you are going on holidays this year, make sure to pick up this book. It is a quick and funny read.
3/5
The book follows Lottie this fun energetic electrician who starts her own book club with some friends after her previous book club did not meet her needs. (Yes they are actual light steamy romance books and every mention of the Kiss Quotient made me very happy) Enters grumpy stand-offish book store owner Matt and chemistry ensues between the two especially as old flames re-enter their life.
Lottie is a fun character her narratives never ceased to make me laugh even if at times it did feel mildly over the top they still were pretty funny and authentic. Additionally, the usage of actual romance books and the way it tackled women and men reading them, thus breaking the stigma surrounding romance novels was nice.
Although, the plot was a little lacklustre and the pacing of it felt off. I do not think the plot kicked in until the old flames entered, which was around midway through. When I think about trying to sum it up I don’t think I could really talk about the plot cause it was more character driven. But, then I was not always convinced of the passion between the two characters…. Sometimes Matt annoyed me and the miscommunication trope feels a little misplaced when you consider the general maturity of these characters . I liked Lottie, but I don’t know how memorable Matt is and sometimes his internal narrative confuses and annoyed me.
4.5 stars
This was such a lovely book. It was short and sweet - perfect beach read (or in my case, a train journey to London).
All characters were relatable and it was great to see such a diverse group. Having sounded a book club, one of the nicest things is meeting people from all walks of life who have come together over a love of books.
Lottie is a fab character - she’s fierce, determined and down to earth. Yet she questions herself continuously and doesn’t realise how much of an effect she has on people. Matt is my ideal man - tall, dark and handsome with a passion for books.
It did strike me as odd that the family would move in together miles away from home, especially considering Matt is 33 and Amy is 24, and neither her nor Jim seemed to want to… but I guess it was their way of coping with grief.
However, their family dynamic added another layer to the story and showed a different type of love. That and the relationships and problems of the book club members made this more than just another cliched love story.
It was simple and predictable, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and loved getting to know all of the characters.
I mostly like to stick to mystery/thriller but occasionally like to drift away into a great summer read. I would definitely recommend this one. It kept me interested and I needed to know what was going to happen. I’ll be recommending this one.
A brilliant heartwarming story about books, friendship and family with a little romance thrown in. The book club members were fabulous - a real mix of characters who supported each other completely. Not just a book club about books but friendship and laughter. I especially loved Audrey - she sounded a right hoot!
Lottie and Matt were great lead characters - both so different but equally caring and compassionate for others. A great choice for a summer read.
Thank you to the Publishing company and NetGalley for a gifted copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
This is a fun read. In fact, it's probably the very same kind of book that The Beach Reads Book Club would pick up, though some of the characters might complain about the tameness of the sex scenes. It's fluffy, easy, light on the drama and full of like-able characters I'd like to share a drink with. All that said, I found the story a little.. simple. There's not much going on plot wise except for our two lovebirds flitting around their feelings for the other, until an old flame comes into the mix.
The beach reads book club is an entertaining read that is full of things I love, books, cake, gin, female friendships and love!
Matt newly relocated with his dad and sister to the area after a bereavement has taken over a bookshop and is finding it hard to adapt and relax into a slower paced way of life after working in the city as a trader.
Lottie an attractive outgoing electrician finds her book club too formal and stuffy so branches out by starting her own with a handpicked crew of attendees of all ages, and seeks out the perfect venue in matts bookshop!
Much laughter, cake eating, gin drinking, reading of saucy books and discussions of sex ensue within the group, but underpinning it a real support network, great friendship and a sense of helping each other out! This combined with a burgeoning romance between Lottie and Matt and fabulous characters make you yearn for a book club just like the beach reads book club! Thank you netgalley for this early read.
I think I want to be Lottie's friend and join her book club! I really enjoyed the plot... Its hard sometimes to put together real life romance with that of the books we read. Either way, I found this book charming and can't wait to read what comes next!
A very fun read and features a mature, drama-free relationship. I really enjoyed how the characters don't take themselves too seriously and enjoy their time together
A book featuring a book club!! As soon as I saw this title I knew I had to read this book. I am SO glad I did, it was excellent!
Lottie has been given the boot from book club for not taking it seriously. (I'm with you Lottie! Book club is supposed to be fun!!) So, she decides to start her own. One with delicious cake, gin, a little bit of book talk and a lot of life talk. She finds the perfect location to host at Books by the Bay, a bookshop and cafe. Matthew Steele, the owner, proves to be quite the distraction. A distraction she certainly wasn't anticipating ...
I loved this book! The steam factor was just the right amount ... not over the top, but enough to have me fanning my face and grinning like a fool several times, hehe! I adored the characters, they had such fun personalities. A book club I would love to be a part of. The storyline is great, I read this in one sitting. Overall a really feel good read with an ending that left me smiling. Highly recommended to romcom fans!
Thanks so much One More Chapter and Netgalley!
Inclusion, support, friendship, love. These are words that come to mind after reading Beach Reads Book Club.
A 4.5 star read that captured my heart with budding romance and book talk!
In Beach Reads Book Club you follow Bookshop Owner Matthew and Book Club Leader Lottie as they embark on a journey of self discovery and learning to love again.
The ladies of the Book Reads Book Club are ladies after my own heart when it comes to what kinds of books they want to read! Their book club is everything I ever wanted in a book club...
“I thought the focus should be on books that uplift…and that can be easily picked up and put down. Books that don’t take themselves too seriously, where the sun shines, and the sex sizzles. Beach reads…books we’d want to take on holiday with us. And books that take us on holiday. They take you out of your head. Transport you to another world for awhile.”
Then add gin, a menagerie of women in need of friendship and some sexy talk and you have Beach Reads Book Club! It's Books, Booze, and Buddies! What's not to love?
Electrician Lottie Watt is fed up with the book club she goes to. It’s run by a stern librarian who chooses the books based on what she thinks they should read, not what they would like to read.
Lottie just wants to read something a bit fun and maybe a bit racy rather than something she has to think too much about. On discovering that fellow club members Heidi and Gira would also prefer this she sets up her own book club. Her best friend Sally also joins along with one of Lottie’s customers, pensioner Audrey.
Lottie asks Matt, the gorgeous owner of Books By The Bay cafe & bookshop, if she can hold the club there and is delighted when he says yes.
As they get together it soon becomes more than a book club. They enjoy Gin, cake and a good gossip, sharing their own stories as well as thoughts of the books they read.
Things begin to heat up between Lottie & Matt but having both been burned by love in the past can they get over their fears and have a future.
I really want to join this book club! It sounds like the kind of group that everyone needs to be a part of.
Thoroughly enjoyable read.
When Lottie Watt is unceremoniously booted out of her uptight book club for not following the rules, she decides to throw the rulebook out the window and start her own club – one where conversation, gin and cake take precedent over actually having read the book!
The Beach Reads Book Club soon finds a home for its meetings at Books by the Bay, a charming bookshop and café owned by gorgeous, brooding Matthew Steele, and as the book club picks heat up, so too does the attraction between Matt and Lottie.
Loved the character Lottie and really would love the join this book club. An enjoyable summer read which will give you a feel good feeling
This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I’ll be looking for more. A great read for the summer on the beach or anywhere. Following Lottie an electrician by day and book club leader by night and her blossoming on off romance with Matt the book shop owner. As always others have their opinion especially the book club members who each have their reasons for being there. A light hearted read with a fairly predictable end but worth the read and I highly recommend this book. Thanks to Kathryn Freeman, her publisher and NetGalley.
Where do I sign up for this book club??? I have avoided book clubs in the real world because I enjoy reading for fun and the few times I have been invited to join a book club it has always been a stuffy, regimented group that reads the trendy intellectual book rather than a book that the group wants to read and enjoy. This group of readers are my kind of people. In fact the author has woven such realistically flawed characters that I absolutely am jealous of this group of readers that have come together over the love of books to become the closest friends that truly support and care for each other. This is a fabulous stand alone book, but I do hope the author continues the characters as a series as it could easily be converted to a series. I would definitely continue to read about these characters and this delightful bookstore and cafe.
A really enjoyable book - perfect for a light hearted summer read. The characters were well written and really likeable. The storyline was great and the relationship development kept my interest throughout. highly recommended.
Lottie loves to read, but when she joins the library’s book club they only read literary fiction. Not her cup of tea at all. When she is kicked out for failing to read the novel, again, she decides to start her own bookclub.
Matthew has just bought the local bookshop and cafe where Lottie decides to hold her monthly meetings. Matt and Lottie are attracted to each other, but when Lottie’s ex shows up what will the future hold?
Another brilliant book by Kathryn Freeman.
Lottie loves reading but not the high brow reads her book club are interested in so she starts her own beach reads book club with some other club members and one of her customers. Soon the four of them start to build more than a book club held in the local book shop. The owner of the bookshop, Matt, is quite aloof but soon Lottie realises she needs him to drop his guard and she could have her own romance!
This was just a perfect summer read. Reminded me a lot of Milly Johnson with cracking one liners and Audrey was one of the funniest characters ever.
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
I truly loved this book. Since I love to read, I love any book that deals with a book club. Add in a little romance, quirky members and just a little drama, and we’ve got a glorious book.
This is the story of Lottie, a kick ass female that owns her own electrician business. She is a member of a stuffy book club mainly for the social scene, but she finally decides she can’t take it any longer. She asks the new bookshop owner, handsome Matt, if she can host her own book club meetings in his bookshop after hours and the fun begins.
Her book club focuses on rom coms. And the octogenarian member (Audrey) always finds the sex angle to discuss. They drink gin, eat homemade cake and order pizza - now that’s a book club worth joining.
Throughout the year, Lottie & Matt grow closer. But can Matt get over his cheating ex-wife? And can Lottie get over her ex who has moved back to England to declare his undying love for her?
This is the cutest book that everyone should read. It’s an easy read and the characters are so darn likable.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. The opinions stated above are mine without biases.
