I wanted to love this book, but I found the writing extremely adolescent. I think the premise is great, and I love that real Beach Reads are used throughout the story as monthly books picks. However, I do not believe that Matt was a highly driven trader in London, his character is so weak - a trader would need much more confidence to do that job, regardless of what was going on in his personal life.
Let's talk about the sex scenes. For a story that mentions sex in every chapter, there seems to be little of it going on within the story. The first time Matt and Lottie get together, it's written erotically, but then the other times, it's glossed over. And lets talk about the adolescent descriptions. No adult male would call female breasts 'jiggly'. Not just once, but twice. There are much better words to describe them - voluptuous, swaying... you get the drift.
Other than these points, it kept my interest and was definitely a beach read on it's own.
Fun idea for a story, with some quirky characters thrown together. Uncomfortable in the book club she joined, Lottie decides to start her own book club focusing on the kind of books she likes to read, rom-coms and beach reads. Lots of romance in the books they read and also in Lottie’s life. I love how the unlikely group becomes friends who support and help each other.
I loved the title and synopsis of The Beach Reads Book Club and couldn't wait to get started with it. I have always wanted to join a book club and this is the kind of club I want to belong to. Books, gossip drink and cake.
I have reviewed The Kiss Quotient on my blog and I enjoyed it. It was nice seeing a book I have featured in the book club. I identified with Lottie over not getting on in some clubs, but it's not book clubs I didn't like.
Lottie is the kind of person I'd like to know in person. Bubly, helpful and thoughtful, she's the opposite of serious Matt. Will opposites attract in this novel?
The bookshop has a catchy name and I loved the atmosphere there. The characters are certainly unique in this novel. The only thing that did make me feel bad was the use of the term Asperger's which could offend people who have it. I don't but as a person with severe physical and visual disabilities, I feel strongly about how people with any disability are portrayed or referred to in books.
Apart from this, The Beach Reads Book Club is a relaxing novel with a good pace. If you're looking for steamy romance though, you won't get it here as the romance is cute and slow burn. If you like slow burn romance, then this is the novel for you. I like both types of romances but would have liked this to be hotter. That said, I find it unique that the book is summer-themed but has a slower pace to the romantic scenes. Many summer novels have a quick summer fling and it is nice that there's more than that here. The pacing helps the reader linger over the romance scenes.
Thanks to Kathryn Freeman, Rachel's Random Resources and One More Chapter for my ARC in exchange for an honest and voluntary review.
4 stars.
This was such a cute read! It’s the perfect beach vacation read. I mean, it’s in the title!
This book is about a woman named Lottie who gets kicked out of her book club. She’s tired of the rules so she decides to start her own book club, one that reads steamy and fun books. She finds an eclectic group of women and now all she needs is a venue. Enter hot and broody book shop owner Matthew…
Sounds like good right? While Lottie and Matthew are just so gosh darn cute together, it’s the supporting characters that really make this book great. They’re hilarious and really supportive of one another. I think we all need a group like that.
I haven't read a good chicklit romance for a while now & this made a pleasant change from some of the heavier books I've been reading of late.
What an eye catching cover!
Fun, light, & fluffy, this was an easy reading feelgood romantic comedy.
Loved their book club reading choices, some new reads added to the list.
30 something electrician Lottie Watts was thrown out of her book club for not adhering to the rules. Not one to take things lying down Lottie decides to start up her own book club with gin, conversation, cake & some fabulous romantic reads.
When she finds the perfect setting for their weekly meetings in Books by the Bay, a charming bookshop/café owned by handsome Matt Steele, she finds more than their reading material hotting up.
Many thanks to Netgalley for my ARC in return for my honest review.

Right in the feels! This was a great slow burn romance.
Not so newly single Lottie is trying to find her place as she starts a new book club to read fun, light- hearted, and if Audrey has anything to say about it smutty books. Not only does she find her reading equals, she finds her tribe. Watching this group develop and each of their journeys throughout the story is incredibly satisfying. But Lottie finds far more than she bargained for with the pull she feels for the bookshop owner. Each time she see's him at their monthly meetings it becomes increasingly more difficult to ignore her growing feelings.
Matt was looking for a fresh start. After a messy divorce and the loss of his mother he moves his father and sister to a little seaside town in hopes of a better life for the family. Getting away from the chaos of the city, running a family bookstore together, and most importantly per the dying wishes of his mother watching out for one another. But nothing is going according to plan, and the one person that does brighten his day is the very last thing he expected. He was not looking for love or romance, personal experience told him he was awful at it anyways. But he can't seem to stop his growing attraction to the vivacious and lively Lottie no matter how hard he tries.
This book sucked me in early and kept me flipping pages as fast as I could. I loved the cast of characters and the charming town. I felt Matt's emotions right along beside him and oh man they cut deep. Lottie was wonderful (though she had a few moments where I was less than impressed overall she's great). I definitely recommend this as a fun summer read.
What a cute story! There’s a lot to love about this light hearted Rom-com.
Meet Lottie, who lives in a small beach town. She is tired of her stuffy book club and wants to to start a real feel good book club. When looking for a place to hold her book club club, Lottie meets the new book store owner in town sparks fly!
This is such a cleverly written book. The author keeps you invested in Lottie and the other characters while keeping you laughing and tugging also at your heart a bit.
I also loved that the club read real rom coms! I found myself adding a few of their picks to my TBR list!
Thanks to NETGALLEY for the ARC of this book.
This was a light fluffy read perfect for the holiday weekend. I love reading about shenanigans in small British towns. Lottie's struggles as a small business owner, her clingy dog Chewie, and the other members of her book club added to the charm and believability of this book. I found Gira and Audrey to be particularly compelling book club members with rich backstories.
I also discovered I've read most of the books the book club discusses throughout the book and I loved how they paralleled the main story.
Overall, a really great "beach read."
A sweet romcom about a book club that is sure to be a fan of readers and romance lovers alike. The main character is like ale and it’s easy to find one selves in the protagonist.
I really enjoyed reading The Beach Reads Book Club. Such a heartwarming story about friendship with a sweet romance thrown in.
The characters are adorable and so engaging. There is just enough humor to keep you laughing and laughing. I found myself giggling out loud a few times☺️.
I want to be a member of this book club!
Perfect summer read I highly recommend.
Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest opinion. All opinions expressed are my own.
The Beach Reads Book Club is about a fun book club that was created by Lottie Watt after she was booted out of her uptight book club for not following the rules. This new book club found a home for its meetings at a charming bookstore and cafe' owned by gorgeous and brooding Matthew Steele. To build up membership in the book club, Lottie invites an elderly woman from the town. This woman really spices up the book club by bringing gin to the meetings and insisting on only reading sexy books. This is a fun book club that spends as much time eating cake and drinking as it does discussing the book. Lottie helps the members with personal issues as well as leading the book club. She is also responsible for getting the bookshop owner to loosen up and enjoy life more as there romantic relationship develops. I recommend this book.
This was such a fun beach read! I brought it with for 4th of July weekend and it was a perfect, easy read.
I loved the characters, the backstory and the tiny love triangle that actually worked ok. The concept of starting a book club for different kinds of personalities and readers was great. I definitely love a good book club, but also the relationships that go with the gathering.
The love story was cute. Not too steamy, but fun to read!
Lottie ditches the stuffy book club and decides to start her own. The problem is the library will not let her host in their building. She turns to the attractive owner of her favorite book store. Owner Matthew isn’t sure what he’s getting himself into by allowing it, but it does mean more time that Lottie will be in his bookstore. These characters slowly find their way together with challenges along the way..
Lottie’s beach read book club is the kind of book club I would like to join. I love light and fun books, as well as time with friends. Book stores are a favorite of mine as well
This may not be as steamy as most romance novels, but it is a sweet read.
Thank you to NetGalley and One More Chapter for the eARC for review.
Lottie Watt starts her own book club after getting booted out of her uptight, rule following one. Lottie and a group of her friends decide that in her book club they are going to read fun rom-coms all the while eating cake and drinking gin.
Lottie and her book club meet at Books by the Bay, a bookshop and café owned and run by Matthew Steele. Lottie is a fun, extrovert and Matthew is quiet and awkward. Soon Lottie and Matthew feelings ignite just like the characters in the book club books.
This book was so cute! I loved Lottie’s, spunky character and her book club friends. The romance between Lottie and Matthew was a slow burn because Matthew was also dealing with a divorce, recent death of his mother, but I didn’t mind it because we saw Matt grow and come out of his shell. This is the perfect summer read.
A huge thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
After the book club Lottie belongs to pretty much tell her to leave as she doesn't really fit in, she decides to start up her own book club called The Beach Read Book club. The next challenge is finding somewhere to host it, this is where she comes across the handsome but uptight Matt who owns a bookshop and his sister who runs the cafe
A brilliant story where it's not just books that are discussed but life, friendships and past relationships. Loved it
Really enjoyed this book, a nice easy read with lots of laughter and emotion running throughout. A great story!
This is a really sweet story - the characters are likable and relatable. There are some laugh out loud moments when the book group meets and the wonderful character, Audrey, lets loose with her comments. The Beach Reads Book Club is the perfect addition to your beach bag!
Another fabulous read from Kathryn Freeman!
When Lottie Watt is shown the door from the prim and proper Book Club for not following their rules, she makes the decision to start one of her own; a friendly club where chat and cake will be enjoyed alongside some less serious – but no less enjoyable – novels. Her club soon finds a venue for their meetings in the local bookshop / cafe, under the watchful eye of Matthew Steele – the handsome but straight-laced owner. As the book clubs heats up, so does the attraction between Matt and Lottie but they are a long way from being friends, never mind anything more.
I loved everything about this book; it’s smart, funny and the attraction between Lottie and Matt is palpable. The author has created a wonderful cast of characters, all life-like and entertaining but, for me, Audrey was the star of the show. I spluttered, giggled and hooted with laughter throughout this novel and recommend it as a fantastic summer read. A delightful and enthralling story, beautifully written and full of the magic which makes a book sparkle, making it well worth all five stars.
My thanks to the publisher for my copy via NetGalley and to Rachel Gilbey for my spot on this tour; this is – as always – my honest, original and unbiased review.
The title really sums this book up! A great easy reading rom-com which would be perfect when lying on a beach! Great to see the characters from all walks of life come together to discuss the books but ultimately becoming friends for life. Along with a romantic element with Lottie and Matt and the ex Henry. A lovely feel good book. I really like the eye catching cover as well.
The cover was the first thing to catch my eye. I love the pop of colour. Next, I read the synopsis and that was enough for me. This is the ideal rom-com and I can’t recommend it enough.
Thank you #NetGalley and #HarperCollinsUK for giving me the opportunity to read and review this delightful book.
