Such a fun Halloween book! A Happy Pumpkin in a patch of Spooky Pumpkins for Halloween. Beautiful and Colorful Illustrations with a cute storyline for kids of all ages. I highly recommend it! Thanks to #netgalley for an advanced reader copy! I loved it!
A cute Halloween book for kids not looking to be scared. The Happy Pumpkin celebrates liking what you like and being who you are. A great Halloween read for little kids or jumpier older ones who still want to get in the Halloween spirit without the scares.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing a free copy in exchange for my honest review.
It's Halloween and everyone in town is looking for pumpkins in the pumpkin patch. All the pumpkins are dreaming of being made into scary jack-o-lanterns. But one pumpkin doesn't want to be scary he wants to be smiley. The other pumpkins make fun of him.All of the pumpkins were picked but two little pumpkins. Soon only the smiley pumpkin was left. Then a little boy came into the patch and he found the smiley pumpkin and was excited to take him home. The little pumpkin shined bright because he was who he was suppose to be.
This was a delight to read. The Happy Pumpkin is about a group of pumpkins awaiting to be picked by children for Halloween. Apparently the scary you are, the more likely you will get picked, but there are always exception. There was one happy pumpkin - not scary at all. The illustrations are great, the story is cute, and the message is much needed: “we always shine our brightest when we are just who we are”.
I would buy this book for the illustrations alone.
The cover is sure to be posted on the instagram feeds of influencers this Fall.
The story was very short, but as a parent I appreciate short and sweet stories.
The message was fantastic!
This was a super adorable story about a pumpkin who didn’t quite fit in with the rest but that’s okay because he’s perfect the way he is.
The messages included in this short children’s book are powerful but done in an easy to digest way. Kids are going to love this! Especially around Halloween.
4/5 ⭐️
I'm not a big fan of holiday books. I will only read them during a very short window surrounding very specific holidays. Halloween is one I would usually skip when it comes to books for myself, but not for my kids. This story is reminiscent of Spookly the Square Pumpkin. When I first read that book, I wasn't impressed. But my kids loved it. I've learned from that experience. I'd say that with kids, particularly very young or sensitive ones, this book will be a definite winner.
I just read this to my children, and they adored it! It was sweet and heartwarming. I love how it showed that you are allowed to have your own opinions, even if they go against the status quo. I love that it was a boy that chose the sweet pumpkin and the girl picked the scary one. I would buy this for my kids!
The Happy Pumpkin tells of a happy pumpkin, literally in a field of all scary pumpkins. Children come to pick their pumpkins for Halloween, and the Happy pumpkin is never chosen. All the children seem to want scary ones. No one picks the Happy pumpkin. Finally, on the last day of Halloween, the Happy pumpkin and another scary one were the last pumpkins in the field. The older sister rushes for the scary one, picking it immediately. The younger brother, who is scared and does not like scary Halloween things, ecstatically chooses the Happy pumpkin, making everyone happy.
This book is great for children, and teaching them that being who you are is what is most important. Although the Happy Pumpkin could have tried to be scary to get chosen sooner, that was just not who he is. He stayed true to himself, and everyone was happy in the end.
This book would be most appropriate as a read along to toddlers, or as a beginning reader for those children who are starting to read independently. It teaches them to be who they are without apologies, and to not change to make others happy. Perfect lessons for the smaller child to grow up learning.
Thank you to the author, illustrator, publisher and NetGalley, for the advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The Happy Pumpkin
by DK; illustrated by MacKenzie Haley
I read an arc of this book from NetGalley with my 4.5 year old. The length of the story was appropriate for his attention span. The autumn color palate utilized will help you get into a great fall festive mood. The other pumpkins discuss striving to be scary and festive but nothing in the book appeared scary and should not unsettle timid children. There are some very minor background spider webs. There was a little white mouse on almost every page - it was fun to locate. The moral of the story - be who you are even when you don’t fit in. A good message.
While many delight in spooky Halloween, not everyone enjoys the scary costumes and creatures that are front and center. The Happy Pumpkin is a perfect story for those who don't like fright and would prefer something sweet. A cute story that celebrates being true to yourself and knowing everything will fall into place.
The Happy Pumpkin is a children’s story of a group of pumpkins that want to be picked by a child for Halloween. They all try to be the scariest, except for one pumpkin who likes to smile and is always happy. Not only are the pictures adorable, but the message in the book is great: that it’s ok not to like Halloween and scary things and that “we always shine our brightest when we are just who we are”.
I loved that the illustrator included a diverse cast of people and pumpkins in this book. This is a great book for young children, easy to read, bright colors, and a fantastic message.
Thank you to NetGalley and DK Publishers for providing me with an ARC. This is one I will definitely be picking up for the kids!
This is such a sweet story. It’s the perfect not-so-scary Halloween story with a wonderful message. I love that the little pumpkin is true to who he is throughout the book, despite others’ opinions and is rewarded for being his authentic self. The illustrations are beautiful and intriguing for the littlest audience member to enjoy.
Great story!
I received an advance copy of this book from NetGalley and these are my honest opinions.
The Happy Pumpkin, published by DK, is the perfect find for any child who loves Halloween, but doesn’t love the scary parts. Halloween is nearing and it’s time for kids to pick their pumpkins. But as the others make their scariest faces, one little pumpkin refrains. He doesn’t want to be scary. He wants to smile! But will anyone want a happy pumpkin?
A perfect reminder that even at the spookiest time of year, it’s still okay to smile, and that in a day all about pretending to be someone else, there is a special magic in just being you!
Children will love the bright colors and easy to follow story. This is one book I intend to boy for my own collection. Easily a holiday favorite!

A sweet colorful book that was a huge hit for my kids.
A super sweet and cute halloween themed story! Delightful and quirky following a pumpkin that is perky rather than scary, and his journey of trying to be chosen this Halloween!
