Freedom’s Song by gifted author Kim Vogel Sawyer is a pure delight. It is a Christian historical romance that caught my attention quickly. I was turning page after page to see what would happen next. Filled with twists, surprises, Biblical messages, and an array of colorful characters, this is one of the best books I had read this year.

Set in 1860 in the Midwest, it is the story of indentured servant, Fanny. A dubious riverboat captain has added more years than Fanny and her family agreed to in their arrangement. She is kept like a caged songbird on the boat and made to perform. Tragedy strikes and Fanny finds herself onshore away from her prison. The people she meets make unique and intriguing adventures and subplots.

Author Sawyer has written a touching story that contains many life and spiritual lessons. My emotions were all over the place as Fanny experienced trials, setbacks, and joys. It played like a movie in my mind as I read it, and I hope one day to really watch it. This novel is more than entertaining. It is God glorifying.

I highly recommend it. There are discussion questions at the end which would make it perfect for a book club or small group selection. It gets 5 out of 5 stars from this reader. I received a copy on NetGalley, but these are my honest words.

Are you a Kim Vogel Sawyer fan? Or a historical fiction fan? Then you will enjoy Kim's newest book to be coming out soon. It is delightful. Kim writes wonderfully, and this book captured my attendance for the entire book.

I was wondering if Sloane would catch up to Fanny. This book pulls you through Fanny's journey, and she will get her freedom. In the process, Sloan will find his freedom as well. There are three main characters throughout this book. We get to see their point of view throughout the book; Most of them are Fanny's point of view. We do see Walters and Sloane's point of view throughout the book as well.

This book talks about slaves. What will happen when Fanny meets Enoch and his family? Will she help them to freedom, and she gets help with being hidden with them. What will Fanny do? Will Sloane learn about keeping his word and about God?

Will Sloan find his riverboat singer? Does he seem to think he is on a goose chase trying to find a singer that seems to sing her way to freedom? The plot thickens, and there will be freedom for Fanny. Will she get what she has been looking for in life. Fanny agreed to help care and watch over Walter's little girl Annlesse. What will happen when Walter's new wife comes?

Kim Vogel Sawyer delivers sweet romance with just the right amount of tension in her upcoming release, Freedom’s Song. Years of indentured servitude as the Darling of the River Peacock have dimmed Fanche Beck’s hope for her family’s new life in America, until she is knocked overboard amid the chaos of a terrible storm and fire aboard the entertainment steamboat and into the mighty Mississippi River. Presumed dead, Fanny seizes the opportunity to try to reach her family in New York. A runaway slave family and a broken-hearted widower with a darling little girl challenge Fanny to follow God’s guidance despite the fact that they slow her journey to her family. It is these challenges that teach Fanny how to find out who she is when she is freed from her gilded cage and has the chance to choose her way forward. What happens when her former employer discovers she survived the near-drowning and the decisions that must be made when a new bride is found for the widower who has hired her are enough to keep the pages turning until the satisfying end.

Thank you to the author and publisher for allowing me a copy to read and review. All opinions expressed here are my own and are completely genuine.

She comes across the hero of the book and his baby girl on her trip to be with her family in New York. All the while, the riverboat captain is searching for her replacement.

She was a indentured singer on a riverboat. She wanted to return to her family far away in New York. This was an amazing book full of action and tension and love. It's a beautiful Christian book that needs to be read. I am so glad that I was able to enjoy this author's talent.

Freedom’s Song, by Kim Vogel Sawyer is a Christian historical fiction story of a young girls who was indentured to sing on a river boat in exchange of her family being brought to the US.

This is an easy to read, well written story that has wonderful, loving, caring characters. I enjoyed the care Fanny gave to so many people, putting their needs above hers. I also enjoyed Walter’s character. He is a young single father trying to do the best for his daughter while tending his farm. I liked the strong faith they both had. This story caught my attention right away and held it to the end. It contained suspense that kept me reading to see what would happen. I wish this were part of a series.

Freedom's Song was a fantastic historical fiction with a beautiful message of faith, protection and new beginnings. Travel with Fanny from a performance on a riverboat, escaping during a storm, traveling with others seeking their freedom and finding a place she felt freedom. Stopping at a rural farm because of the noise she heard, she found herself caring for a child and the widower’s home. Out in the open country she saw the beauty of God’s creation through nature while developing a wonderful friendship with another lady and discovering exactly what God desired of her life.

Fanny’s resilience, fortitude, faith and strength made her a strong heroine despite all the hardships she had endured in her young life. I appreciate the way the author brought her to life with vivid details and dialogue weaving in a beautiful faith message, forgiveness, freedom, peace and love for the true to life characters.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an early e-book of this amazing story by Kim Vogel Sawyer. I was not required to write a positive review but have shared my own opinion.

It’s right before the War Between the States, and Fanny is an indentured servant who is the lead singer on a Mississippi riverboat. Fanny learns that her employer has no intention of allowing her to leave when her service is up. When she washes ashore after a riverboat accident sends her over the railing, Fanny meets up with some escaping slaves. They nurse Fanny and then she, in turn, helps them make their way to freedom. She’s on her way to New York to find her family when she stumbles upon the Kuhn farm in Indiana. After the death of his wife, Walter is trying to care for his baby daughter and still do his farm work. Fanny agrees to take care of the child until Walter’s mail order bride comes. This is a lovely story of kindness and forgiveness with the theme of freedom.

The story was slow to begin but once it got moving it was an enjoyable story. I didn't care for the ending and felt like it fell flat. So much more could have been explained when Sloan walked away..

I would recommend this to other readers who enjoy a slight suspense and light romance. It definitely had good spiritual content.

Expert storyteller Kim Vogel Sawyer delivers another five-star novel with Freedom’s Song! Her expressive prose and meaningful, well-written dialogue kept me hanging on to every word. I fell in love with strong yet vulnerable heroine and hero Fanny and Walter. They quickly made my list of favorite fictional couples. The secondary characters—the escaped slaves, Josephine, and Sloan—are also richly drawn and memorable. The story, set in 1860, moves quickly and flows smoothly and held me captive from beginning to end.

I greatly appreciate the faith element that flows freely through the story filled with spiritual truths regarding trusting God for His provision and how He puts people in our lives to help us see His plan for us. The theme of freedom—physical, emotional, and spiritual—permeating the story is beautifully expounded and thought provoking. The romance is slow-building and sweet. The “embarrassing moments” between Fanny and Walter are precious. Freedom’s Song is a wonderfully inspiring and absorbing read whose stirring message will resonate with you long after you finish the final page. This book easily made my Best Reads of the Year list—a book to read and reread, and I highly recommend it.

I can always count on author Kim Vogel Sawyer to tell a good story based on Christian values. I was so happy when I was given the chance to read this book. This is the story of young Fanny Beck, who is a singer on a riverboat. She has been purchased by the captain as an indentured servant in exchange for her family's passage to New York. When bad weather destroys the riverboat, Fanny sees her chance to escape and be reunited with her family. This is the story of how Fanny gains her freedom. She meets a lot of interesting people as well as learning a lot about herself. This story is another winner from one of my favorite authors!

Readers who love historical fiction will definitely enjoy this book. Set in 1860, Fanny has escaped her life as an indentured girl singing on a riverboat. As she attempts to earn money while singing her way back to New York, her strong faith endures many times. Sloan, her master while trying to track down Fanny is reminded of his childhood through glimpses of memory. Will Sloan heed to his father's teachings? Will he find Fanny? Readers will enjoy Fanny's journey. Loved the Indiana community!

Another absolutely heartrending story by Kansas native KVS. I absolutely love every book I read by this author. Freedom’s song was such a warm story that not only touches on physical freedom but ultimately our spiritual freedom in Christ. I personally devoured this story and was left thirsty for more.

Freedom. We all love being able to move about freely and believe what we want. But what if you couldn't? What if you are sheltered in a room in the lower chamber of a boat and only allowed out to perform? To what measure would you go to escape? Kim Vogel Sawyer writes an amazing story of Fanny Beck's brave journey to find the freedom she longs for. Fanny is a lovely character who has a lot to give. Walter is a kindhearted man who needs love in his life, and his little daughter is adorable. I like that the author took a historical situation, a river boat singer, and created a tale of compassion. The thread of forgiveness and kindness is woven in beautifully. If you enjoy historical fiction, Freedom's Song is an enjoyable read by Kim Vogel Sawyer. I received a complimentary copy of this book. FREEDOM'S SONG - Kim Vogel Sawyer

I received this free to my Kindle for purpose of review. Mrs. Sawyer is an excellent writer and I have enjoyed only two of her many published titles.

Fanny had a voice light a nightingale, she was beautiful and brought a smile to many lives. The only problem here was she had been indentured to Sloan as a singer on the River Peacock by her father as they came to America from Scotland. Fanny was treated poorly and seven years had been more than enough. She was known as the Riverboats Darling. But when she recognized Sloan Kirkpatrick had no intention of allowing her to leave. She began to form a plan.

A fire aboard the boat gave Fanny Beck the chance she had waited for. She is thrown overboard and now she has her chance to run. And run she did. She traveled with a family running from slaveowners to a free state, she learned much from them and she found people who loved her. Her goal to return to Ma and Da who were now in NYC and be reunited to her family. Her trip went a rather serendipitous route. As she helped her friends be able to get free. She also becomes free and learns true meaning of freedom.

She has endurance and she is a woman who loves others. She finds herself caring for a young child whose Mother has died. She stays to help Walter with Annaliese. No more details, get the book....it is hard to put down once you start.

Great story historical fiction but many well taught life lessons in this story.

The characters are well done. The plot is really interesting.

It was wonderful to watch the character growth for the main characters and great to see them realizing God's hand on their lives.

Kim Vogel Sawyer has quickly become a favorite author of mine. She writes true to Christian fiction but in a way that delivers deep understanding of scriptures and a relationship with Jesus Crhsit--which I'm sorry to say is rare in many other Christian fiction novels. Sawyer stands above the pack and I was very excited to receive this book from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Without going into spoilers, I loved Fanny and her personality--she was shy and inexperienced, but her grit and her relationship with Jesus bolstered her to have strength. Every step of her journey was full of fear but overcome by faith of many others. I could really get behind her experiences and I found myself racing to the end of the book to see what would happen--would she go to the River Peacock and finish her term? Would she move to the prairie? Would she go on to New York City to see her family? I could feel the conflict in her and in Walter and Sloan and it made for a riveting, believable novel of God's grace and the freedom found in Jesus' sacrifice.

This story was fantastic! I feel in love immediately with Fanny. My heart hurt for her lot in life but then God takes her on a journey of loving and helping slaves by risking her life. Her huge heart only garners her trouble but brings her love like she never knew. This story wraps around your heart and pulls you in completely. The love and sacrifice that two people give brings a beautiful story of Gods redeeming love. A roller coaster ride of emotion that will have you smiling with each page. Beautifully written, beauty for ashes.

Kim Vogel Sawyer is an author whose books I have read in the past, so I was delighted to receive an advance copy of her book Freedom's Song.

Fanny is a talented singer who was brought to America from Ireland by a riverboat owner to sing on his riverboat. The difficulty? She came on an indenture agreement which she thought was for 7 years, but the holder of the indenture, Sloan, has a plan to hold her contract for 35 years (7 years for Fanny and each member of her family). Fanny feels trapped, and longs to escape.

Freedom's Song is the story of Fanny's escape - and how she grows personally during that process. But it's also the story of Walter Kuhn, who is a significant part of Fanny's growth and ultimate freedom from Sloan.

Freedom's Song met my expectations, and I encourage others to read it.
