I received The Long Way Home as part of a NetGalley giveaway.

When Maggie's husband is killed, a secret life she never knew about comes to life. Shattered, she and her two sons pack up and move from the Boston suburbs to Jewel Harbor, New Hampshire, to make a new start. While trying to shield her sons from their father's deception, renovate the ramshackle mansion she purchased on a whim, and maintain her own sanity, she meets Evan, a handsome ex-athlete-turned-boatbuilder, who helps mend her home and her broken heart. But Evan has demons of his own, ones he must confront, before he and Maggie can make a new start together.

This was a really lovely surprise of a book. I liked that both characters were flawed--truly flawed, not "romance novel" flawed. It grounded them in a sense of reality that a lot of novels featuring Mary Sues and Mary Stus do. The evolution of the relationship moved fairly slowly--even by the conclusion of the book, they're just beginning a relationship. Given the losses and traumas they've both endured (and were still healing from), I thought it was really wise. I always appreciate nuance in a romance novel, and this one has it in spades. Will be looking forward to reading more from Shann McPherson in the future.
