The Abduction of Pretty Penny by Leonard Goldberg, narrated by Steve West.
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for an e-Audio ARC for my honest review.
As I've always enjoyed reading Sherlock Holmes, I thought that this book would be interesting, with his daughter continuing his work. This is my first book from this series and I really enjoyed it. I found the story very suspenseful and the narrator was excellent.
Looking forward to reading more by this author.

This was my first book in this series.
I did greatly enjoy it.
I appreciated the female protagonist and ability to push for more.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher/author for providing me with an ALC in exchange for my honest review.
This book was exactly what I wanted it to be! I loved it. I will make sure to check out other books by this author. When I requested this I was just intrigued by the concept of it and I loved how it turned out. This story had a great plot and if you have read this and enjoyed it, This was so much. It was such a great story. I would say give this one a try. I will continue to follow this author. Way to go to this author for not letting me down.
I highly enjoyed the narrator of the audiobook. Kept me listening.
*received for free from netgalley for honest review* not the best version of sherlock holmes-like books, really wanted to like it more but just couldn't, but hey it could grow on me
In this series, Sherlock Holmes left a daughter, Joanna, to carry on his work. She grew up and married the son of Dr. Watson and together the two form a team to solve those mysteries which come their way with the assistance of Dr. Watson who is still alive. Their newest case comes when the owner of the Whitechapel Players, the local theatre group, comes to Joanna to ask her to find their star actress, Pretty Penny. She has disappeared and there is fear that she has been abducted.
Just like twenty-eight years ago, young prostitutes are being killed on the streets of Whitechapel. Has Jack the Ripper returned to take back up his grisly task or is there a copycat? Is there a chance that he could have Pretty Penny? The investigation shows Penny had a wealthy suitor who insisted on remaining anonymous and that the pair had been quarreling. Could he have done something to Penny? Several doctors who work at the local charity clinic and who are also actors at the Players are suspects due to their surgical skills.
The stakes are raised even higher when Joanna receives a letter that makes it clear that her son, Johnny, has been targeted by the serial killer. The Watsons need to find the killer both to protect their son and to solve the mystery of Penny's disappearance and possible death. Can they do so?
This is the fifth book in this series. At first I was worried that I wouldn't like it since I love the original Sherlock Holmes stories so much but I was quickly drawn in and found myself entranced. The characters are finely drawn and the premise is believable. The setting seems very realistic and the author's research detailed. I listened to this title and the narrator was cool and collected as the entire Watson team was. This book is recommended for mystery readers and Sherlock Holmes fans.
The Abduction of Pretty Penny is the fifth book in Leonard Goldberg's A Daughter of Sherlock Holmes Mystery series. This is the first one I've read/listened to so far. Should you start from the beginning? I'd say yes; I wish I had. I feel like I missed quite a bit regarding getting a feel for these characters and their backgrounds. I believe I would have enjoyed this book more if I had read the previous novels. I both read and listened to this audiobook version narrated by Steve West.
Joanna (the daughter of the deceased Sherlock Holmes), together with her husband Dr. John Watson the younger and his father Dr. John Watson the elder, are asked by the proprietor of the Whitechapel Playhouse to investigate the disappearance of beautiful young actress Pretty Penny. While they are looking for her they are asked by Scotland Yard to help in their investigation of a murder that bears a striking resemblance to the work of the infamous Jack the Ripper. It quickly becomes obvious that the killer actually IS the Ripper, reappearing 28 years after his string of murders stopped . Joanna believes that the Ripper abducted Pretty Penny and is killing prostitutes, keeping Penny for his grand finale. When Joanna starts getting close to honing in on the killer, she receives a letter from him threatening that her young son Johnny will be the next victim. Now Joanna and the Watsons frantically work to catch him before the Ripper kills both the actress and the boy they love before disappearing once more into the ether...
I admit that I have never read any of the Sherlock Holmes books by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, but of course am familiar with his famous characters. I was excited to read this story centered around the great detective's daughter. Except...I didn't care for Joanna. She was arrogant and condescending to everyone, including her husband and father-in-law, both of whom were intelligent and respected doctors. She called her father-in-law simply Watson, which I found disrespectful. She also smoked up a storm with Turkish cigarettes, disregarding others. This is why I think I would have been better served reading the previous books first; I would have come to know and respect Joanna by seeing more interactions with her and her family and learning about her past. However, once I really got into the mystery I became much more engaged. I've always found Jack the Ripper stories interesting though horribly gruesome. Joanna also became more human when she worried about her son. The story became much more exciting when she had the Ripper in her sights. Before I read the next book in the series, I do believe I will check out the prior books first to bring me up to speed.
Steve West did a marvelous job with the narration. I loved his voice and could listen to it all day! I hope he continues to narrate this series.
I received an ARC of this book courtesy of the publisher and NetGalley. I received no compensation for my review, and all thoughts and opinions expressed are entirely my own.
This was my first time diving into this series, and I enjoyed it. It can be read as a standalone, but I do want to go back and read other books in the series to get the backstory of the characters. Highly recommend for Sherlock holmes fans. Narrator was entertaining.
I really enjoyed listening to this book and getting to know the daughter of Sherlock Holmes. I loved the narrator and how he read each persons lines. There were quite a few twists and turns. It was fun to see what a daughter of Sherlock Holmes might have grown up to be like. I received a copy of this audiobook from Netgalley for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.
This was a wonderful take on continuing Sherlock Holmes' legacy - by giving him a daughter that was taught his style and thinking and is continuing his investigation services. To add Watson's son, her husband, was just a small addition to the story that I absolutely loved!
The mystery was also great. Extending a larger mystery, I loved all the details about a case and serial killer I felt like I knew pretty well. I loved the information about letters and signatures and other little details. Again, it's the small things that really gave this story so much character and reason to love it!
I thought the characters were so much fun, the mystery well written and I loved the twists. The only oddity I found was that a few of the reasons for obvious investigation (the candies and the man buying them) seemed really obvious, but the two boys trailing along just seemed baffled. I thought it was odd and I kept checking this wasn't a YA title. But then the details of the murders were so gruesome and detailed, I knew it wasn't YA. Otherwise, this was a perfect story and I loved it!
A huge thank you to the author and publisher for providing an e-ARC via Netgalley. This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.
First book by Leonard Goldberg and I found it whole heartedly satisfying. I was able to snag a review copy of the audio book through The publisher and net galley in exchange for an honest review and by far this was one of my favorite audio books to have had the pleasure of listening too. The characters were richly developed (from the little bit of the back story I received for the main characters I still felt like I could follow along) as well as the setting of the story. The only thing I wish was different was the ending, not to give away anything it was a lot different than I was expecting. Even with this I absolutely loved this story and loved the narration. Highly recommend.

I nearly missed the next release in The Daughter of Sherlock Holmes Mysteries series. I really enjoy all these Sherlock Holmes style investigations and the setting in England. Plus the series is narrated by STEVE WEST.
After many years, Jack the Ripper is active again in Whitechapel. A special young women, a talented and beautiful actress has been taken and it is feared she will be his victim. The Watsons and Joanna are asked to look for Pretty Penny. Based on clues and deductions, they narrow down the suspects as deaths pile up.
The criminal is very clever and a real challenge to apprehend. A variety of strategies are employed with Johnny and Toby 2 getting in on the hunt. The Irregulars are tasked to acquire more information. Finally, Joanna herself acts as bait and still he slips away. The case is very dangerous for the Watsons, but he must be caught and stopped.

Narration:

The narrator is my absolute favorite - STEVE WEST!!!!!! I loved listening to this story at my usual 1.5x speed. I appreciate his work with both male and female voices and he handles the English characters so well. Definitely, his narration enhanced my enjoyment, and I often chose audiobooks because he is the narrator.

What a great book! It was fast paced and hard to put down! I love the clever banter and I also didn't realize it was part of a series! I can't wait to read the other ones or listen to them! I loved the narration!
What do you get when you cross one of the most infamous serial killers of all time with a Shelock-Holmes-esque whodunnit storyline? THIS BOOK! Evidently this is the 5th book in the series by Goldberg about the daughter of Sherlock Holmes, and it is fantastic! Read along as Joanna and the Watsons along with the help of Scotland Yard try to find Pretty Penny and rescue her from her captor. This one will keep you on your toes! Thank you to NetGalley, Macmillan Audio, and Minotaur Books for a copy of this audiobook for an honest review.
In The Abduction of Pretty Penny, the fifth book in the daughter of Sherlock Holmes series, the 221 b Baker Street investigators are hired to find out what happened to a popular young actress. The story begins with Joanna calling her husband, Dr. John Watson, Jr and her father-in-law, Dr. Watson to the window. She predicts the woman pacing on Baker Street is going to hire them. What is holding her back? I love how Joanna gives her partners a lesson in reading people’s body language using the woman’s indecision as a teachable moment.
I really enjoy this story and the audio performance. Joanna continues to show the skills she inherited from her father, Sherlock Holmes, and her mother, Irene Adler. She is clever, feisty, and determined to figure out the clues of the case. In other words, she is my kind of heroine. Like her father, Joanna doesn’t show a lot of emotion, except around her son. In some ways this is a little off-putting but her other qualities more than make up for it.
The Abduction of Pretty Penny, like the other books in the series is told from the point of view of Joanna’s husband. This story telling approach is reminiscent of the original Sherlock Holmes mysteries. The story moves at a steady pace with some twists that are well placed. What begins as a missing person case, turns into something more sinister when the group realizes that Jack the Ripper has returned after twenty-eight years of inactivity.
Once again, the team calls on the Baker Street Irregulars to help. They are always a fun flashback to the original series and add a light break to an intense story. The suspects are an unusual group. They each add dimension and flavor to the story. Anyone of the suspects could be involved in the abduction as each one is hiding something. The disturbing question of has the ripper returned or do we have a copycat on the prowl?
Steve West continues as narrator for the series. He is terrific interpreting the essence of the story. John Watson’s emotions and his pride and admiration for his wife comes across clearly. West’s narration vividly evokes the setting of early 1900s London and the tension of the characters. Well done! West is the voice in my head for Dr. Watson, Jr.
If you are a Sherlock Holmes fan, you need to check out this series. In my opinion, the series gets better as it progresses. I truly enjoyed listening to this audio.
It picks up later on but feels forced to fit into the Sherlock thought process. The narrator is a bit easy to fall asleep to.
The Abduction of Pretty Penny is the fifth book in the series. I have not read the previous books and had no problem engaging with or understanding the story. I listened to the audio book which was narrated by Steve West.. The structure and tone of the story fit well with the idea of a a Sherlock Holmes mystery. Joanna was portrayed as highly intelligent and observant like her father.
The tone of the narration was well done. Steve West did a great job with inflection and accent. I was a little distracted by some female voices, perhaps because he has a deep, making them feel off. Overall, the narration was very good.
I enjoyed The Abduction of Pretty Penny, and would recommend it to anyone who like a Sherlock style mystery.
Thank you Netgalley for the arc. This is my honest review.
This mystery story fills many of the boxes one would look for in a great story to rival Sherlock Holmes. Part of a series chronicling the investigations of Sherlock Holmes adult daughter, Joanna, the main character epitomizes the great detective to a Tee. Told from the perspective of her husband, son of Dr. John Watson, this book details the search for a missing actress as it dovetails with the recent killings that resemble those of the famous Jack the Ripper!
On the downside some of the pieces were repetitive (Joanna constantly being referred to as “Daughter of Sherlock Holmes” or the repetition of the terms “Unfortunates” when describing contemporary sex workers to name two) and the resolution was rather anticlimactic. If you are expecting a twist you are going to be disappointed.
The narrator did well differentiating between the characters. I appreciated that his female characters weren’t just an octave higher than his male characters and each had a quality of their own. It may have been intentional, but often Joanna and her son Johnny sounded a little mechanical. That was a tad distracting but overall it was a well done narration
However the actual mystery itself, the ins and outs of Joanna’s thinking, and spying the clues as they are laid out is great fun!
I listened to this audiobook narrated by Steve West and he always done a splendid job. This was book 5 of this series but can certainly be a stand-alone.
This historical mystery had all the clever, crime chasing intrigue as any Sherlock Holmes novel. His daughter imitated her father almost to a tee. Clue after clue this will be solved. It was a very old fashion mystery. Fans of Sherlock will enjoy this I think. The only complaint I had is that I thought it was a little to long. I hope this was helpful.
Thanks Macmillan Audio via Netgalley.
I enjoyed this next adventure of The Daughter of Sherlock Holmes, but it wasn’t my favorite of the series. I expected it to be much more fast paced since the trio we’re taking on Jack the Ripper. The start and the end was great but the middle lagged. I am excited to continue the series if it does so.
I love the narrator of this series.
DISCLAIMER: I received this book free from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
This was a well written and plotted story that didn’t appeal to me due to the gore. I think if you are a Sherlock Holmes fan who doesn’t mind graphic anatomical details about the murder victims and how they were killed, this book is for you. Story Rating 3.5/5
Audiobook Narrator: Steve West did an excellent job with the male voices; I love his accent. The female voices were not as well done and I think that had to do with his vocal pitch when voicing/performing the female characters. Narration Rating: 4/5
