I just unfortunately didn't finish thie one. It read similarly to another one I recently read and I couldn't distinguish it, so letting it go.
This was definitely a cover pick. Right away I knew I was going to get a cute, funny enemy-to-lovers story. I didn't even realize it was connected to another rom-com, Ten Rules for Faking It. Thankfully, I'd already read it, lol, I've done that more often than I want to admit. Especially with these interconnected romance series. If you've read Ten Rules for Faking It, then you'll be happy to see Chris and Everly in this one. You don't have to read the first one in order to enjoy How to Love Your Neighbor.
The two characters, Noah and Grace, clash almost from the very beginning, they're both very stubborn as all hell and both have the burden of having a shitty parent. Pushed together due to a magazine interview, the tension rises and rises between them. I'm talking edge of the seat, why don't you just kiss each other already, tension.
Expect a lighthearted, cute and funny story with high chemistry. I don't read too many closed-door romances but I enjoyed this one.
<Spoilers ahead> I did think both Noah and Grace were possibly too stubborn. I spent some time annoyed with both of them. Also, the huge chip that Noah had on his shoulder about his dad and how people kept treated him like he was unreliable, or a joke felt repetitive. Maybe I was too harsh on Noah (I had some strong thoughts about him for a bit) but I was done with the whole situation. Especially knowing how determined he was to prove everyone wrong. There were some funny and super sweet parts and outside of the suspicious way Grace's schooling was set up (there's no way it works like this) Grace was very relatable. Like super relatable and we'd be here another 15 min if I went into why.
All in all, a good book to escape into.
Tropes: grumpy/sunshine, enemy-to-lovers, neighbors, closed door
The chemistry between the two was not there for me. The story did not do much for me. I kept at it hoping things would turn around and get better and it never hit the point. I felt that the writing was very basic and maybe that is me being picky but it did bother me for whatever reason.
I really enjoyed Grace and Noah's story. I love friends to lovers romances and this one was well-written. The characters were likable and the story was well-paced. There was *something* missing for me and that's why it is 4 stars instead of 5.
I really liked parts of this book. I like remodeling and interior design so those parts of the story were interesting. The banter between the characters started great after they realized they really didn't like each other AND they were next door neighbors. But, once they started to be into each other, there was a lot of mush gushy talk and it seemed like just chapters worth of feelings and what they were afraid of. Overall, they were a cut couple but the story line fell after the second half of the book.
Thanks NetGalley for the preview!
Grace was a strong female and had a lot of great qualities. I feel like a lot of her family baggage was left unfinished even at the end of the book. Noah also had a lot of family baggage that never gets resolved. Overall that part really bothered me. It made me feel like the wool was being pulled over my eyes and I was just supposed to focus on the romance parts. I was hoping for more substance and growth from these characters.
How to Love Your Neighbor by Sophie Sullivan is a delightful read that will charm fans of lighthearted, funny, and romantic stories, particularly those who enjoy grumpy/sunshine romances, found family themes, and enemies-to-lovers tropes, and are looking for a feel-good, uplifting tale that will leave them smiling from start to finish.
Such a fun read! Loved this one!
Many thanks to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for my ARC.
You can never go wrong with a grumpy/sunshine, enemies-to-lovers romance! I do wish the rivalry had lasted a little longer and that there was more grumpiness to build more tension, but otherwise this was a cute read. The home renovation aspects were fun. The side characters and found family were heart warming. They were probably my favorite part of the story! The HEA was sweet and I loved how Grace and Noah grew together as people. Overall, it was a decent read! Definitely a good palate cleanser after an intense fantasy read.
How to Love your Neighbor is a such a sweet, page turning and fresh story. Sophie Sullivan writing style has always amazed me. I love her reading her novels.
A Must read for all readers.
Thank you for a review copy of this book. I really enjoyed this book. The story and the characters were well done.
A romance that actually has some serious romantic vibes. It's her house ans she be darned if he can scare her off. He wants what he wants but too late realizes that what he really wants is more than a piece of property. Smiles, giggles and more than one awww moment.
Such a cute concept but it was so cheesy for me. I just couldn’t get into it at all. The FMC made me cringe so hard. I appreciated her hard work but oof I couldn’t stand her.
I am embarrassed by how far behind I am with writing my reviews that I didn't realize that this book is part of a series. With being said, this story can stand alone and reading the first book does give you a preview into the characters in this book.
In book one, Chris Jansen, is transplanted to San Verde, CA from NY to improve the ratings at the radio station which his overbearing father, Nathaniel Jansen, purchased to turn into profit. This story introduces Everly Dean, SUN 96.2 radio show producer, working with her best friend, Stacey Ryan, a radio deejay at the station. They are less than pleased with the changes since the Jansen family purchased the station and work hard to convince Chris how profitable the station could be.
In this book, Grace Travis is working odd jobs to make ends meet while finishing up her courses in design. She had been assisting Morty, a 72 year-old man, in lieu of rent. He has a long time lady friend, Tilly, who often comes to visit and ensure Morty is safe. Aside from working at Coffee Stop, Grace makes money as a dog walker to pay for school to fulfill her dream of becoming an interior designer. Her unreliable mother, Tammy Travis, becomes enraged when she learns that her parents left their home on the beach to Grace and not her. Grace was surprised by this inheritance as well since Tammy never allowed her to get to know her grandparents. This allows Grace to renovate the house using her design talents with the help of best friend, Rosie and co-worker, Hugo. Meanwhile, she is annoyed by Noah Jansen, who is trying to buy the house next door. He runs into some difficulty getting approval the extreme renovations he has planned which pleases Grace who would prefer he build his house elsewhere. The ultimate request comes from Stacey who wants to hire Grace as an interior designer for Noah's house which will be featured in a magazine. What's a girl to do? Learn to love her neighbor, of course!
There are the quirky side stories which provide humor and structure to series. A fun read!
Honestly just didn’t love this one. Felt like I knew what was going to happen the entire time.
It wasn’t bad, just wasn’t my favourite. I’m sorry :(
I think this book started out really promising. But the main male character started to make me feel like I was going crazy. He was demanding, a daddy's money boy, whiny, and condescending among other things. He had absolutely no redeeming qualities. And nothing compelled me to want him and our heroine to get together. In fact I was actively rooting against them. Girl you can find better! It was completely frustrating to see him just try to throw money at all his problems and just undermine our heroine. The only upside of this book is Morty. We love a crotchety old man and father figure.
Grace is all about her checklist and she is almost finished with her degree as an interior decorator, she has found a perfect home in which she thinks she will be able to show off her work. Major problem real estate developer Noah Jensen sees the house and property along the beach as a way to expand, now you see the dilemma and the story between the two characters. A good funny at times story.
Really great book I have had so much reading this and getting to know these lovable characters will definitely continue to read books by this author
This was a really fun, charming, banter-filled romance—I loved the chemistry and banter between the two characters!
I am in love with this whole series!!
The sassy fun characters kept me coming back for more as I was reading it, and the fun ways that brothers were put throughout the stories. I love series that are all about the families, and you get to know them more and more throughout the stories.
