This was so good! I loved Millie's character; she was funny, insanely confident in herself and her abilities, but was also really kind. Her relationship with Oliver was the best (BANTER! + Slowburn), and I loved watching it slowly progress into something more. The side characters were also really well done; I really loved Teddy (cute platonic relationships are the best), and Chloe was the best. And there's a huge aspect of theater and drama which I found really interesting.

Overall, anybody who loves contemporary romances would really enjoy this.

Millie and her moods, and her Momma Mia method acting, manage to overcome some serious missteps on the way to finding more family, and more peace of mind.

When You Get A Chance is a charming, heartwarming, and comedic story about navigating your past, present, and future. It asks the big question we’ve all had to ask ourselves at least once: how can you possibly figure out who you want to be when you're still figuring out who you are?

Millie Price is your average NYC teen: she lives with her introverted single dad and extroverted aunt lives across the hall from her BFF Teddy, and is determined to become a Broadway star. She has drama with her drama club rival/potential love interest Oliver. She has her "Millie moods" which are like teenage mood swings on steroids when her emotions feel so intense that she can barely keep herself from exploding. Its during one such episode, while arguing with her dad that she decides to seek out her birth mother to be on her side. She never imagined that the first lead in her search would come from her dad's old 2003 LiveJournal, where he details his relationships from the time around her birth, practically casting her as the lead in her favorite musical, Mamma Mia! Or in Millie's case, Millie Mia (love this reversed reference!). She never thought that her search for her mother would have her pushing her boundaries, meeting new people, and confronting some uncomfortable truths in pursuit of the truth of who she is and where she comes from.

Thank you Emma Lord, Wednesday Books, and NetGalley for the advance copy of the book in exchange for my honeat review.

This Mamma Mia retelling is a must read! Millie has big dreams of becoming a broadway star. She’s been raised by her single dad and aunt after her mom dropped her off on her dads doorstep.

After finding her dads Live Journal, Millie suddenly wants to find her mom finds there are three possible moms out there. She tracks them down by joining a dance class, taking part in an internship and joining a Broadway lovers group. But when the all show up at her surprise birthday, including her dad Millie’s world is turned upside down.

If you are into musical theater, or acting in general, this book is for you. We meet Millie a young girl in her last year if high school, she is full of DRAMA, and character, she was so funny to read, I couldn’t stop laughing. Anyway, like every teen that wants to go away for college, she is stuck with trying to convince her dad about that, and the idea of contacting her mom comes into place. She doesn't know who her mom is and she feels that maybe having another parents opinion might sway him, plus he doesn’t understand because he’s not into theater or acting, he is the complete opposite of her, she already assumes that she gets that from her mom. But who is her mom??? She went on a mission with the help of her best friend Teddy.

This book was too cute, I enjoyed everything about it, from her and her high school nemesis, her crashing into his internship, rounding up the women to see which one is her mom. Then of course finding love, growing up, finally solving the mystery of who her mom is. Awwwwwwww, this book was amazing! Cant wait til it launches. Thanks Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book.

Emma Lord is my new favorite YA author, mostly because Of how she blends her passions with teenage romance. I love the mixture of milkshakes and musicals to create a heartwarming love story.

When You Get the Chance is a truly heart-warming YA novel that is a mix of enemies to lovers meets Mamma Mia. At the center of this is Millie, this over-the-top drama queen who is finding out who she really is. In addition, there is a depth to the cast and storylines that makes this such an enjoyable read.

While I never had the voice to actually be a true theatre kid, I've always LOVED a musical. This is packed with tidbits of your favorite songs and characters that you will be blasting your Broadway showstoppers playlist by the end of it.

There were a lot of aspects I really enjoyed about this book (umm, a club that serves milkshakes?) but hands down my favorite part was the mom reveal--and the fact that the story didn't just end there but explored both what made Millie search for her and the person who filled that role instead. Like I said, truly heart-warming.

Thank you to NetGalley, Wednesday Books and St. Martins Press for an advanced copy of this and the opportunity to share my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This book was terrific! Millie Price is a star of her high school's theater program, with her eyes set on Broadway. To achieve her goals as soon as possible, she wants to leave high school early to attend a pre-college program in California with a track record of producing Broadway stars. Her dad, who raised her since she was a baby and her mom left, is dubious of this plan. So when Millie comes across his old LiveJournal which seems to offer clues to who her mom is, Millie decides to try to find her mom -- something she has never really thought of doing before -- to see if she will support her plan. But as Millie tries to find her long-missing mom, she soon sees that this plan may have unexpected consequences for the relationships who have been in her life all along, including her best friend, her aunt, and, most of all, her dad.

This book is really terrific. Millie is a warm, complex, and intriguing character, and the supporting cast, from Millie's best friend, to her drama club rival, to her aunt, to the several mom candidates are all interesting and well drawn in their own right. The book combines humor, emotion, and mystery to create an engaging story that you won't want to put down.

Highly recommended!

When You Get the Chance is a great fast paced read for theater fans of all ages. The remarkable characters are funny and unique, and will stick around with the reader. In addition to the characters, the conflict makes it easy to root for Millie as she navigates family relationships and a potential romantic relationship. If you loved Emma Lord's other novels, you will for sure love When You Get the Chance. It will be released on January 4th, 2022.

Cute YA rom-com about first lives, lost loves, and finding yourself. Millie on a quest to find her mom, narrows it down to three women and inserts herself in their lives. Add in an internship with her nemesis and a nerdy best friend, there is plenty of laughs. A little slow at the beginning but stick with it as it gets better and you'll be wanting a milkshake and a Broadway show by the end.

When You Get the Chance is just a fun, sparkly, energetic book from start to finish. The cover - pink and beaming and confident - is exactly what the story and its dramatic, goofy heroine, Millie, feel like. Those who are already fans of Emma Lord's earlier books will enjoy some Easter eggs in this one, which suggest all three exist in some kind of Emma Lord Cinematic Universe (which I assume is a particularly joyful, glittery place in which to exist), but whether you're already a fan or new to Lord's books, it might be impossible to read When You Get the Chance and not have a smile on your face.

It's also impossible to read it and not have Mamma Mia stuck in your head the entire time, so enjoy that!

Millie is a fun character to read and taking the journey with her to find out who her mother is was a fun ride. The author really kept you guessing right up towards the end! I enjoyed the musical theater aspect of the novel as well as the diverse group of characters in the book. The lessons Millie learned from the variety of new women she came in contact with were valuable ones that the reader can take away with them as well.

As unrealistic as this was, it was still pretty cute. I mean, they live in New fuckin York, and everything and everybody just falls into place so easily. In a place that big? Yeah right.
The mom mystery was very big right in your face and like, well, duhhh but for the age range this is targeted at it works.
I liked it. Big ups.

A fun retelling of the classic Mammia Mia story. Millie eats, breathes and sleeps Broadway and has her entire life. She knows she didn’t get it from her father, who makes introverts look social, and assumes she gets it from her mother. The problem is she doesn’t know who her mother is. One day, she and her best friend Teddy stumble across her fathers old Live Journal and find references to three women from right around the time she would have been conceived. Teddy, the Internet genius, manages to locate all three women and thus begins an ill-advised adventure to make contact with all these women to figure out which one is her mom. She even stumbles into a summer internship that forces her to compete with her arch nemesis from school, Oliver. Millie has always been perfectly happy with her life, her and her dad and her aunt and Teddy, but suddenly she’s attending parties and making friends and taking dance lessons. Can she keep sight of the goal or will she get swept away in another one of her “Millie Moods”?

I enjoyed this book overall, although I found it a little slow to start. I was also a little confused by the ending, and I wish there had been more focus on these Millie moods and her mental health. While central to the plot for most of the book, anxiety is mostly obliquely referenced throughout and mostly takes a back burner.

A solid 4/5 stars for me.

This was a really cute story and I really enjoyed the whole Mamma Mia of it all with Millie trying to figure out who her mom is from 3 candidates from her dads past Steph, Farrah and Beth which she gleaned the names from her dads old live journal entries. So Millie is a bit of a diva, she lives with her Dad and her lesbian aunt Heather and she lives across the way from her bff Teddy. At the end of the school year she receives notice that she was accepted into a school for acting/dance in LA but she applied behind her dads back so now she has to convince him she can go and thinks if she finds her mom she will help her. During this her high school nemesis Oliver is her competition while she tries for an internship at a talent management agency where one of her mom candidates works at. Of course as it goes her and Oliver fall for each other and Millie realizes that she doesn’t need to go to that school and realizes who her mom is but not until after her dad meets everyone again and figures out what she was trying to do. I am not a Broadway nerd by any means so while the story was cute, the references to musicals really went over my head and I didn’t really like Millie for a lot of the book because she was such a diva and just kept blowing up at everyone around her for no reason except for her own mistakes and so her Millie Moods really didn’t make me like her very much until almost the end when I really grew to like her character.

Thanks to St. Martins Press and Netgalley for the complimentary copy of this book in e-book form. All opinions in this review are my own.

**Review will be published on my blog/Instagram/Goodreads December 30th, 2021!**

ABSOLUTELY LOVED.

New favorite of Emma Lord’s books!!!

I in no way, connect with Millie and her expressive, extrovert self. But wow did I enjoy the ride. This was everything I could’ve hoped for when I got this book and refreshed my love of young adult contemporaries.

Millie is a force to be reckoned with. I love her wild sense of self and how slowly over the chapters, layers were peeled back and I was able to see the true heart of what Millie was trying to prove and accomplish. She’s a teen searching for more, trying to forge a path for her future, while not wanting to lose the connections she already has.

I adore a great Dad/daughter dynamic and this had it. Along with a wonderful Aunt/Niece relationship too. Even her best friend, Teddy was a dream. All of these characters were well conceived and I felt like I knew and wanted to cheer for them alongside Millie.

The ROMANCE. It’s one of the many plots here and it was perfect. A dash of enemies to lovers that moved at a beautiful pace. I was full on grinning whenever the kiss scenes finally arrived and looooove Oliver and Millie so much. Shipping them was the easiest move.

Millie finding her Mom tore at many heart strings. I was tearing up at some deep, needed conversations between Millie and her Dad, and then Millie when she met her Mom. There was plenty to unpack and I was completely enthralled by how everything was going to work out.

Enter a little epilogue that gave closure to many avenues. Absolutely precious and what was needed. Wow do I love Emma Lord’s books. I can’t wait to see what she writes next. I love the combination of coming of age, first love, and finding your truth.

Overall audience notes:
YA Contemporary + Romance
Language: little
Romance: kisses
Trigger/Content Warnings: parental abandonment

A bit predictable, but a good read none the less. I found myself rooting for Millie along the way to find her Mom in order to fulfill her dream. I loved all the characters, the plot, and bit of romance. Just wish it held a bit more mystery. To much was revealed to quickly. All in all an enjoyable read. Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read and provide my honest review.
