Adrienne Young's latest is a standalone with an interesting mix of crime, family drama, and a side of romance. Bryn has been summoned to return to the city of her birth to take her place in her uncle's household on her eighteenth birthday. After being raised by an elderly aunt, Bryn is eager to return to Bastian to learn more about her parents, and earn her own way in the world. Things are not all they appear, and her uncle has his own motives for summoning her back to Bastian. I really enjoyed this one, but I must admit the romance between Bryn and Ezra wasn't quite there for me. Young's writing is as solid as ever, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this one to a variety of readers.
Wow! I fell in love with Adrienne Young when I read Fable — and it only grew once I read Namesake. I can officially say that Adrienne Young is one of my favourite authors, because The Last Legacy was fantastic.
After reading the Fable Duology and learning that there was going to be a new story focusing on the Roth family, I was so eager to get my hands on it. Adrienne Young has an amazing ability to weave together a fantastic story full of entertainment through her writing, her characters, and the messages she sends throughout.
While a part of me was a little skeptical going into The Last Legacy (how could it possibly beat my love for Fable and Namesake?), I was so thrilled with the story inside. It's a beautiful tale about friendship, finding yourself, family and surviving — not all unlike Fable and Namesake. But The Last Legacy has a different feel because of Brynn and the Roth family. They create heartpounding moments that lead to the constant need to turn the pages.
I devoured every moment of this book. I love Adrienne Young. I love the Roth family. I love the tales she creates and I am sitting here (so hopeful) that we get to see more inside this incredible world in the future!
A definite 5 star read from me!
I adored this unexpected return to the Fable world. Full of criminal masterminds, heists, theft, crime... everything you would want from a fantasy world but would never expect to be delivered. I found the return to Bastien great, and although this IS technically a standalone, I have an inkling that Adrienne Young is not done with this world... yet. ;)
I love this author and this book did not disappoint! I loved where the story went and all of the twist and turns. The main characters were interesting and I will be recommending this book to all of my friends.
I love this unexpected return the to world of Fable! Bryn was a fantastic heroine and the Roths are a fascinating, twisty crime family. Young's writing is beautiful and she really makes the world of Bastien come alive. My only complaint would be that this is a stand-alone - I would love to read about where Bryn goes next!
Thank you NetGalley & St. Martens Press for my gifted eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I woke up at precisely 7am this morning and saw an email stating I was approved for an eARC and did not hesitate to download and read! Ecstatic I was, because I have been thinking about this book ever since the lovely Adrienne Young announced this novel exists.
I can 100% say that this is my new favorite Young book. It’s set inside the Fable world. (Which was what I was most excited about with this release!)
We follow Bryn Roth, as she is summoned back to her notorious, criminal Roth family once she turns 18. Full of mystery, crime, and a bit of romance… The Last Legacy is easily a 5 star ⭐️ read for me.
If you enjoyed Fable and Namesake, you will enjoy this latest installment in that same world. It reads a bit slower than her newest duology, but the slower pacing allows for world building and character development. I would have to say Sky in the Deep is still my fave novel of Adrienne Young, but this is a novel her fans will be sure to enjoy.
I read this not realizing that it was related to the Fable books but even so I loved this book. It was slower than I typically like, and there wasn't much in the way of action of any kind, but something about it stuck with me. Enough that I immediately went and read both Fable books to fill in the few blanks that I had. Well worth the read.
I was really excited to read this one when I got my copy, however, after finishing Namesake and not liking it as much as Fable, I was a little worried about how I would feel about The Last Legacy. This one was ok, I enjoyed being back in the world but it was also a little too fast paced for my liking but when I read it i thought it was another duology so that might have been why. Bryn kinda reminded me too much of Fable and it felt like it was a different story with the same main character if that makes sense? I'm not sure if I'll read any more from this author based on my hit or miss history.
Oh my goodness! I couldn’t be so happy to return back to Fable universe with very powerful, dangerous family story with forbidden love vibes. It’s quite smart, twisty, intriguing journey you never forget!
A powerful, direct, bold, smart, assertive 18 years old orphan heroine Bryn is summoned to Bastian to reconnect with the rest of her long-lost family ( mostly consisted of uncles and cousins leading by her charismatic and threatening eldest uncle Henrik)
Henrik is the patriarch of generations- old trade in fake gemstones. He’d inherited the business from his father. When Bryn’s parents killed in a scheme gone wrong, Bryn’s aunt Sariah struck a deal with her uncle Hendrix to raise Bryn in Nimsmire, away from danger of family business. Hendrik may have Bryn back on her eighteenth birthday and he kept his part of deal.
But right now: A family scheme- secrets-lies- power games expecting young Bryn in Bastian. She has to adjust awkward family routines, mood swings of uncle Henrik, scrutinizing gazes of her relatives. She has to be tested several times to earn their trust even it means she will get humiliated, hurt or punished.
But his threatening uncle or his mischievous, trickster cousin Murrow or way too much mature little cousins are not the only problems she deals with. She also has to deal with the hostility of very crafted silversmith Ezra who is working for his uncle nearly for a decade. Ezra doesn’t want him in the family mansion and he watches her every move carefully. But what if the relationship between them slowly turn into something unexpected as they learn more about each other’s pasts. Could they be ally against the cruelty of Roth clan?
And now his uncle wants to have merchant’s ring for Unnamed Sea. With the power of ring Henrik would be allowed to trade as a merchant, building his inventory outside of Ceros.
And he’s adamant to use Bryn as a pawn to allure his possible ally Simon’s son Coen and spy around their study to learn more secret about their trades to use it as his leverage. But he made a mistake to underestimate Bryn. She’s not frilly, pampered girl her aunt Sariah raised, she carries Roth blood and she has threatening temper which makes her more unpredictable. Could she outsmart her own family to get benefited from this situation to earn her own freedom?
Well, this book is action packed, intelligent, riveting, unputdownable journey!
I’m giving my five ship ahoy, brave heroine, reserved- talented hero, a family reminding you of Succession’s Roys and GOT’s Lannisters stars!
Special thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press/ Wednesday Books for sharing this digital reviewer copy with me in exchange my honest opinions.
The Last Legacy by Adrienne Young is an excellent, action-packed, thrilling, and wonderful fictional novel that takes us back to the world of Bastian and all of the treacherous and high-stakes plays that go right along with it. I loved it!
This book is tied to the trilogy of Fable and Namesake, however it is a stand alone novel that focusses on a few side characters from the previous books, mostly the Roth family. This is a complicated, deceptive, dark, and cutthroat family that deals with illegal trades, gems, and has power and persuasion that holds over so many in Bastian. They remind me almost of a mafia family. We have been introduced to them before, and this time Bryn Roth is the main character. Not part of the typical Roth persona, Bryn has been summoned back by her Uncle to town and here we see things get going.
I will save the twists, turns, suspense, surprises, and plot for the reader to enjoy, but what plays out is a cat and mouse game where the stakes are high, the backhanded actions are aplenty, and Bryn learns who she can trust, and what really defines family.
I enjoyed Bryn. In the same mold as Fable, she is a quazi-outcast, but for good reasons. She has fire, intelligence, passion, a moral compass, and finds her sense of self and purpose during this book. I enjoyed her interactions with Ezra and the progression of their relationship as the book continues. I loved learning more about the “business” and how the Roth family has integrated themselves into so many aspects of so many entities. It gave a wonderful new perspective and angle that I feel really adds depth to the Fable trilogy itself.
I highly recommend.
5/5 stars
