Thank you to William Morrow and the Book Club Girls for making this available on NetGalley, in advance of Wiley Cash's September release, When Ghosts Come Home. I have had my eye on this book for a while because of how beautiful the cover is and am glad to have had the opportunity to read it.
I loved this book and devoured it! Cash does a beautiful job transporting his readers to such a specific setting, which elevates the whole plot to another level. Because of the specificity of the detail, it felt much more cinematic than other books I have read recently.
I loved that this felt like a thriller and yet was about the little things in life that we do not connect to a typical thriller, like faith, history and family. I also appreciated that each of the characters points of view were so distinct and that while there are so many character to choose from, the author kept the narrative focused on only 3.
Can't wait to read more of Cash's work.
3.5 stars rounded up...A Land More Kind Than Home was hard to put down but left me with mixed feelings. Heartbreaking yet predictable, the end felt to obvious and left me disappointed. A charlatan of a preacher moves into a small town and takes over the local church. Next comes a series of events that are as appalling and sad while not shocking in anyway. Told in alternating view points, the story of a young boys death at church is uncovered a little at a time but with no big surprises just leaving you with a bitter taste for humanity at its darkest points. The writing flows smoothly and the pages turn quickly but there was no real highs or lows for me in this book just a sad middle ground. My voluntary, unbiased review is based upon a review copy from Netgalley.
A beautifully written story.
When two boys break their mother’s rule not to spot, they see something through the window of her bedroom that opens their lives. Jess and his older brother, Christopher (nicknamed Stump) see their mother through the window, but she is not with their father.
This is a story of children and a town with a church that is a danger vs. a place of love.
I enjoyed this book. A wonderfully written mystery/thriller centering around a minister and his impact on a church community. His effects on one family are heart wrenching and you read in disbelief. One woman saw it coming and the sheriff was aware of the minister.
Beautifully written. This is one of those books you feel in your soul.
A Land More Kind Than Home tells the story of two brothers through alternating viewpoints - One of the brothers, a church lady, and the sheriff.
It's a story of tragedy that turns into healing but at a heavy cost.
This book took me back to my childhood, from the expressive and beautifully written words to the holy-rollers that I grew up with!! This really pulled me in and got me completely engrossed in the family and church drama. Though Ben seems to be in the background and the pastor and Sheriff Clem more involved, I loved how the author switched focus without losing a beat. This was an exciting and emotional read, an excellent book!#ALandMoreKindthanHome#NetGalley
