I’ve read several of the books in this series, so I thought I knew what to expect in this one (book #9). I was partially right about some of it, totally wrong in my expectations in other ways.
I like how the author picks right up where the action left off from the previous book, but also doesn’t dwell too much on detailing past plot points. There are enough references that somebody new to the series wouldn’t be too lost. Usually.
In this case, however, there are some things from Gina’s past that make reappearances and take more of a central focus. In fact, pretty much most of Gina’s personal life is wrapped up in these points in this book.
In some ways, it felt a little bit long in the tooth, because the event in question has been examined at length in past books. And Gina is still dealing with it.
I think I understand the reasons that the author brought it back into focus in the particular manner, because there were similarities with the police case Gina was working on. The things that kept occurring made for blurred lines between professional and personal, and caused Gina to steer her investigation in several directions.
The case itself was okay. I don’t know if it was because teenagers were the main characters or if the story just didn’t grab me, but I didn’t feel the pop that I have felt from past cases with Gina.
Maybe because teenagers always seem to have so many secrets from adults to begin with, it was difficult to understand and get behind the lies and secrets from this group? I’m not sure. Maybe it would have been better if they were adults.
I did like how the characters were human. For example, PC Kapoor still has scars from the last story, but is working through them, and the visual scars are lasting longer than the mental ones (supposedly). There is great continuity to be found in these characters and their work.
All in all, I suppose this a good entry in the series, but not the best of stories. I’ll still look forward to the next outing by Gina Harte, though, because I want to see where her relationship goes with her daughter, and I have become invested in the characters.
This is the ninth instalment with Detective Gina Harte and her team investigating the death of a schoolgirl who was out camping with friends. Whilst investigating Gina is also dealing with anonymous messages threatening to reveal her secret past.
This was a great read and I can’t wait for book ten.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I can’t believe that this is the ninth book in this series featuring Detective Gina Harte. The book opens with five teenage close friends enjoying a wild party and camping in the woods. Next morning one of the girls is found strangled. The friends all saw nothing and are reluctant to speak to the police as they had been drinking and using drugs. It soon becomes apparent that they all have secrets to keep. Gina and her team have few leads and sense that the teenagers are keeping secrets but unless they are persuaded to talk another one of them could become the next victim. Gina, as well as struggling with this case, starts to receive text messages that leave her frantic with worry . Someone seems to know what really did happen to her husband when he fell and died and threaten her career. The only other person who knows the truth is her boss and on and off lover, DCI Chris’s Briggs and he is also being threatened. The murder storyline is gripping, along with the other storylines you wonder how they will all link up. This is another powerful and gripping read, full of drama, suspense and tension. A compelling read and I can’t wait for the next book in the series.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
This is one of my favourite detective series of all time. Detective Gins Harte is back. This time, she is working on a case involving teenagers. A group of friends went out for a night of partying at a campsite. One of them didn’t survive the night.
Right from the start, I had questions. Did someone sneak into the camp and attack the teen? Was it someone already at the camp? I had so many suspects just like the police. Together, we hit so many dead ends as this was a complex, twisty case.
I liked the narrative style used in this case. As always, we get to follow the case through Gina’s perspective. I have grown to enjoy her character more and more with each new installment. I was so invested in her investigation and a bit of drama in her personal life. Luckily, the drama didn’t overshadow the case. Other narrators include one of the teens who missed the tragic party. I liked Caro and sympathised with her. She reminded me of a typical teen with flawed thinking. I kept questioning her judgement and decision making before reminding myself that teen logic is different. Another narrator that I enjoyed is a wheel-chair, home-bound woman, Sandy, who was caught up in the case. Hers was an intriguing but sad story.
As I’ve mentioned, this was a twisty, unpredictable read. I had my detective hat on and list of suspects but the one person not on my radar ended up being the culprit. My jaw literally dropped at the reveal. Motives and events made sense but wow, I didn’t see that coming.
This is yet another brilliant addition to the DI Gina Harte series. I’m excited to find out what happens next to this fab detective. I recommend the entire series to fans of this genre.
Great story about the effects of bullying. And thumbs up for Gina standing up to her own bullies! Recommended!
I really enjoyed this book. It was a great storyline with excellent characters. I would highly recommend this book as it was a great read.
This just didn’t end up being a book that interested me. When I first read the premise, I was very excited and invested, but getting into it made it clear that it just wasn’t for me. Hopefully it works for others out there!
This is another great read in this series. It had me gripped from page one and I couldn't put it down. It is a story with many twists. I looking forward to reading more
Detective Gina Harte races to solve the murder of a teenager while battling her own demons. Lots of suspects, lots of twists, a good addition to this series.
Another great book by Carla.
D.I. Gina Harte and her team have to solve the murder of a young girl found dead in the woods after a night camping with friends
Will they find the culprit before they strike again
Also Gina is having problems of the personal nature.
Can’t wait for the next in this series
Brilliant
Thanks NetGalley
WOW! What an amazing addition to this enthralling series! Detective Gina Harte is called to investigate just what happened to a sixteen year old who was found murdered after going on a camping trip with her friends. Is the killer one of the other teens, or someone else?
As Gina and her team endeavour to identify and bring the perpetrator to justice she has other worries as texts threaten to reveal her past and she needs to talk to her daughter. Can Gina stay focussed to enable her to identify and capture the killer before there are more fatalities or will her personal history and fears prove too distracting? You’ll just have to read this fantastic addition to this series to find out for yourself. The friends may claim not to know anything but there are secrets, surprises, lies, death and danger in this riveting read.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for my copy of this book which I have voluntarily read and honestly reviewed.
A bunch of teenagers and a lot that went wrong. Trauma, misunderstandings and death - emotions that run high and cause so much havoc in lives!
An absolutely gripping tale!
Another Gina Harte book! What a treat. This character just gets better and better! Carla is the Queen of crime thrillers with a highly likeable female protagonist.
Full review to come on Instagram and Amazon. Thank you to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for a review copy.
Wow what a book. This author consistently delivers fast paced, engrossing, engaging, addictive stories that ypu cannot put down. And every book is better than her last. This one was just perfection.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publishing house and the author for the opportunity to read an advance reader copy of this book in return for a review based upon my honest opinion.
I love this series and was so excited to get the opportunity to read the newest book in the Detective Gina Harte series. Gina is such an interesting character, she is a kickass detective but underneath scared and traumatized from her past, her now deceased husband who used to abuse her daily, that left her acted to trust others.
In this case she is called to the scene of a deceased teen, found after a drunken camp out in the woods behind a housing area. The four remaining teens all have very similar stories, they claim she left and went home. Who in this small community could have killed the teen, they start with more suspects than they thought. The man at the local store, the trucker who stayed in the lot all night, the neighbourhood creep; all could easily be their man. The teens keep to themselves and stick to their story but when another of them is found dead the next day, they get shaken. Now, in a race against time, Gina and her team must find out the identity of the guilty party before more of the group goes missing or is found dead.
This story had me on the edge of my seat, As Gina and her team tried to solve the crime, someone starts sending threatening texts to Gina and DI Briggs, whom she cares about way more than she will admit to herself. Love this series! Can’t wait for the next book!
Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and Carla Kovach for an ARC in return for an honest review.
Carla Kovach does it again. I don’t think I’ve read another series where the 9th book is just as good as the first and continues to get better. This is a nail-bitter of a thriller and full of twists and turns. A thoroughly enjoyable read. Carla is quickly turning into one of my favourite authors.
This is the 9th Gina Harte book in the series and I hadn't realised until I'd already requested it. I thought I would need to have read the previous 8 but I felt once reading it that like good detective style TV programmes (Vera for example), it's good to know the background but each case is individual. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and think Gina is a brilliant character.
I will definitely be going back and reading the previous 8 books in the Gina Harte series, I liked her character so much, she's sassy, intelligent and brilliant at her job and I always like a strong female character who has had some past issues because that's life really, I can really relate to her strength and feel empowered by her.
I was surprised by who the murderer was and I love it when I think it's one person and I end up completely wrong. I think that's great writing.
I would recommend this book to anyone it's brilliant and can't wait to read the rest of the books.
One Left Behind by Carla Kovach is the ninth book of the popular Detective Gina Harte series, but it can be easily enjoyed as a standalone read.
A group of five teenagers spend a night camping in the woods behind a nearby truck stop. But as the sun rises, only four will emerge alive, and it is up to DI Gina Harte and her team to separate the facts and the fiction from some hazy and unreliable accounts. With plenty of suspects, Gina has her work cut out for her, and must work quickly to solve the case, while at the same time dealing with some personal messages that threaten to expose her secrets. Ms Kovach's writing flows beautifully and, once again, I was gripped from beginning to end. You do not want to leave this one behind. I highly recommend this brilliant series, and hope to see it long continue.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for an ARC.
Thanks for the opportunity to read book 9 of this series and while some may say 9 gosh must n repetitive I assure you they are all equally fresh and gripping, i cant wait for book 10 i sense gina series is nearing the end, would like a happy ending xx
