It’s August, a group of teens go camping, there’s drinking and more, it gets a bit out of hand and the following morning one of them is found dead. Who is to blame? Is it one of them or does the net spread a bit wider? DI Gina Harte and DS Jacob Driscoll are the prime investigators with DCI Chris Briggs in support which Gina needs in more ways than one. The story is told principally by Gina with several other points of view interspersed.
There’s a lot going on in this one with multiple layers in the plot line. I like that part of this takes us into Gina’s past as things come back to haunt her and this is a strong part of the storyline. The novel is dark on several fronts, there’s one particularly shocking aspect of a very vulnerable character at the mercy of another and this is very powerful and raises a number of emotions. The portrayal of this is done well with anger/ sadness and love and hate along with the fear that goes with dependence. We have a certain amount of mob mentality, warp speed quick to judgement which is both physical and on social media, demonstrating its dark side presenting people with the opportunity to vent and make unsubstantiated and dangerous statements. This grows thus ramping up tension significantly. In addition there is a tinder box situation with the teenagers with jealousy, stupidity, thoughtless and dangerous actions that spiral out of control with threats arising as a consequence. The teenagers are well portrayed with their fears coming across well along with an increasing sense of claustrophobia. In all the storylines there are some major secrets, lies and potential blackmail. The pace is fast and there’s plenty going on to keep you immersed in the storyline.
My only negatives are that some threats feel a bit weak but maybe that’s intentional when the perpetrator is revealed though I can’t help but feel this person feels a bit like a stereotypical villain complete with cackle!
However, reservations aside, I enjoyed this ninth instalment. The plot packs a punch, there’s plenty going on to make you think and I like the character of Gina very much.
With thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.
I was so excited to read another instalment of the Gina hart series and this one certainly didn’t disappoint. These books are part of a series for which this is book number 9 although could easily be read as a standalone. I liked that this one explored a bit more of Gina’s back story and also her developing relationship with Briggs. If you like edge of the seat murder and crime stories with lots of twists and turns then I highly recommend This series. This was a brilliant plot that kept me on my toes throughout and had me guessing until the end. I am now eagerly awaiting the next instalment.
Another great read from this author who I have been an admirer of from Book 1 in this series. It was well written as usual, an interesting and unusual topic which kept me on the edge of my seat from the beginning until the end, and I just loved every word on every page.
I cannot speak highly enough about this book, a very worthy five stars from me and I am glad the reference to the abusive husband looks to be coming to an end and I hope Gina and Briggs will settle down and be happy together.
Thank you to Netgalley, Bookouture for giving me the opportunity to read this book and well done Carla I look forward to number 10.
These books never disappoint! I’ve read the entire series as advanced copies - I feel so lucky - and can’t recommend this series enough. This is book 9 in the series and to see how the characters have evolved and the arcs they’ve made over time just keeps me wanting more. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for Gina next.
This is a must read and most definitely recommend reading them in order.
Thank you again #netgalley and #bookouture for another fantastic eARC.
A particularly was and messed up case faces Gina and her team this time; teenagers are being murdered and a local is a peeping Tom.
This is a well written series with interesting characters but I do wish Gina's past didn't have to be mentioned in what feels like every chapter.
I love Carla Kovach and the Gina Harte series . Whilst this was still brilliant , I did feel that it wasn't one of the better ones . I did like that the crimes that were being investigated were against teenagers who were the victims but is it possible they could also be the perpetrators . ? Gina is called when the body of a teenage girl is found in the woods near to where she had been camping out and partying with all her friends , Gina obviously looks closely at those who were there but also the nearby neighbours who were tired of the constant party's and the noise , litter and vandalism .
I love Gina , and the relationship she has with her team and it makes for great reading ,
If I could give 4.5 stars I would as it just fell a tiny bit short for me , still a great read though
When you're a teenager and part of a group of close friends life is good: until it isn't. Five of them were alive last night, laughing, joking and enjoying their school holidays, but now they're devastated, scared and over-protected by shell-shocked parents while the police try to find a murderer.
DI Gina Harte has a secret so big it could change everything. Her boss, and sometime lover, is the only one who knows or so she thinks until the anonymous messages start arriving. The local press are as desperate to find the killer as the police and Gina has to put her own problems aside, however hard, to concentrate on a case where everyone has something to hide and no desire to be the first to break. Will anyone else discover what happened or is time running out for everyone?
Carla Kovach is brilliant at taking a simple, if dark, storyline and making it so much more. The tale woven here is complex but never difficult to follow and satisfies on all levels. I love Gina, damaged but resilient, driven but compassionate, a leader but approachable and sympathetic when necessary.
Her private life is just complicated enough to impinge on every aspect of her day if she lets it which she definitely does here and I do like her with Briggs, they are so right for each other. This is the ninth in this series; I do hope there will be a tenth.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the opinions expressed are my own. I loved this and highly recommend it.
Nope, nope, nope! I did not see that coming!
One Left Behind is that kind of can’t-put-down thrill ride that you’ll keep reading all night long. There were so many wrong people in this book – but the most wrong one of all simply shocked me. Every theory I had was wrong.
Also, my teenager is now banned from all parties and outings until she’s 45. And maybe longer.
I loved this one. The author completely surprised me again and again. Would definitely read the author in the future!

This is possibly my favourite in the series so far. Previously I have found Gina a bit irritating but as this book was mostly focused on the investigation, I liked it better.
I found the case really fascinating and the resolution came as a genuine surprise. I loved Sandy's story and really wanted things to work out well for her.
Five teenage friends party in a small woodland on the outskirts of town, but by the morning only four of them have survived... who could have killed Leah? The other teens insist that they don't know what happened, but as DI Gina Harte and her team investigate, it soon becomes clear that the group of friends are keeping secrets. A few other people in the area come up as suspects and Gina must race against time to find out who the killer really is, before more of the teens are murdered...
Another brilliant entry to the Detective Gina Harte series. This book was thrilling, tense and exciting and you are constantly kept guessing who the guilty person is. As well as the main story we had events going on in Gina's life threatening her career and personal life, and so we are kept in suspense wondering how all that will turn out too. The book was fantastic and full of surprises and shocks - recommended!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy of the book in return for my honest feedback.
I normally read my Netgalley titles in date order, but I couldn't wait to get started on this one. I have loved all of the DI Gina Harte series and this is superbly good. I loved the theme of being persecuted for something that a member of your family has done, the scene where Sandy is trapped in the bedroom scared witless by the angry mob outside is really powerful. The police characters in this series are so believable, I especially love the mentions of Mrs O and her baking. The cast of suspects is also well characterised; we can all remember the peer pressure of our teenage years. I must admit that I didn't guess the culprit, so the ending was beautifully shocking. The final chapters with Gina's mother in law and daughter give hope that her life will settle down. It could also be a series conclusion though, and I very much hope this is not the case? If anyone has yet to read Carla Covach's books, I suggest that you remedy this, but start at the beginning.
Great book! Wow so many twists and turns! This book had intrigue, suspense, action and lots of crazy plot twists! I definitely enjoyed reading this book! I highly recommend reading it! Its well worth reading! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
This is book 9 in the detective Gina Harte series. Wow! What can I say about this book in one word! Tremendous!!! Although I would recommend all books from this author, this book was definitely on another level! I can not recommend this book enough to anyone that enjoys a psychological mystery/thriller!!’ Lots of twists and turns I never saw coming! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

An ok read.
Someone is dead. Someone is lying.
Leah’s friends all swear they didn’t see or hear anything. Her best friend sobs as she recounts what she remembers from that night – dancing, roasting marshmallows, sipping warm cans of beer by the fire – but is it grief, or is she hiding something? What happened to Naomi in the hour that no one can account for? And what troubled past lies behind the perfect manners of the boy who organised the trip, and who is prepared to lie to keep it buried?
As the cracks in their stories grow, it’s clear one of them is lying, and one of them is next…
It's a one time read.
Characters were so so and narration was ok.
I'm doing more promotion on its release date among my fellow Authors Bloggers Family Friends and followers.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for giving me an advanced copy of this book.
Another fantastic read from Carla Kovach and the timeline between this and the last one isn’t that long. Not only does Gina have to figure out who’s behind the latest murders but is dealing with the fact that her life could change dramatically and could ruin the lives of more than one . The only downside is now having to wait for the next book. I just wish I could give it more than five stars.
