This story tells of a young girl who wants to be a soldier. I find Sulphur to be an interesting character. She is fierce and wants to protect those she loves. The story is very well-written. I thought the author did an excellent job in making the medieval world come alive! I recommend this for novel for fans of Mulan! This novel is also perfect for fans of Melanie Dickerson, Tamora Pierce, and Rachel Hartman!

This was a great breif glismpse into Sulphur's life. It had great bisexual representation, and a rich world full of things that make it unique. I love the little wheel we get at the beginning of each chapter to clue you in when this is taking place because the books spans a good amount of time for such short book. I also really liked the idea of breakfast wine, and that they all seemed to have a drink for everything. It was little details like that which made the world feel real and kept me wanting to read more. I thought Sulphur's rise to the top rank happened too fast to be believable, especially after such a breif scrimmage. Also some of Sulphur's total lack of knowledge about what her sister's can do and such seems off. Other than that, it was an intriguing set up, and I can't wait to see where all of this goes.
Thank you to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
